Season RecapThe 2011-12 Queen’s Gaels have been one of the most dominant teams in the country since they began their season with the number one rank in the CIS in September. The Gaels had the best record in the OUA with a 13-1-2 record which earned them 41 points. The season began with a high note for the Gaels as they kicked off their campaign with a 10 game unbeaten streak in which they outscored their oppostion by a 31-7 margin. The Gaels only loss on the season came on the road to Toronto by a slim 1-0 scoreline in which former Gaels All-Canadian Eilish McConville scored the winner for her new team, the Varsity Blues. Toronto played the Gaels tough all season and held the Gaels to one of their two draws, the other coming against the Laurentian Voyageurs in the regular season finale. In the playoffs the Gaels looked strong in a 3-0 quarter-final victory over the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels received solid performances from their stars in the win as OUA scoring champion Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg led the team with two goals and OUA East MVP Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. chipped in with the clincher to put the team into the final four. In their OUA semifinal game the Gaels took on the McMaster Marauders. The Gaels had their stars elevate their level of play as Tessier scored two goals in the game to give the Gaels the lead before Riley Filion scored the clincher off of a free kick. The Gaels advanced to the OUA finals with the 3-0 win, where they took on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The two teams were evenly matched for the third time in two seasons, and despite an intense battle in regulation penalty kicks were needed to determine a winner. The Gaels converted all five of their kicks as Melissa Jung of Mississauga, Ont. scored the game winning fifth penalty while Chantel Marson stopped the second Laurier shooter to give the Gaels a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks. The win captured the Gaels first OUA championship since 2002. The Gaels are led by OUA East MVP Riley Filion, who anchored the Gaels midfield this season. In 2010 Filion was named to her second consecutive CIS Championship All-Star team after scoring the national championship winning goal for the Gaels. She also played for the Canadian universiade team this past summer. Filion is equally adept at being a playmaker or a finisher for the Gaels. Up front the Gaels rely on two-time OUA scoring champion Jacqueline Tessier who scored 12 goals in 16 games this season to lead the Gaels. Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. was close behind with eight goals for the Gaels. In the backend, the Gaels count on Brienna Shaw of Vancouver who was named a first-team all-star for the fourth time in her career after captaining Canada at the summer universiade. Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C. was named the OUA Rookie of the Year for 2011. She recorded five goals from the defence in her first season as a member of the Gaels. In goal, Chantel Marson of London, Ont. handles most of the backstopping duties for the team. She recorded seven clean sheets over the course of the regular season for the Gaels.

Head CoachDave McDowellMcDowell is entering his 24th season as head coach of the Queen’s Gaels women’s soccer team. A two-time CIS Coach of the Year, McDowell has guided the Gaels to two national championship titles, in 1988 and 2010, as well as four provincial titles, in 1988, 2001, 2002 and 2011.

Under his guidance, Queen’s has posted a combined record of 247-70-61, including OUA and CIS playoffs, for an impressive 0.734 winning percentage. During his tenure, the Gaels have posted 10 or more wins in the regular season five times, including a team record 14 during the 2010 season.

A coach who blends both solid offensive and defensive tactics, the Gaels have allowed only 10 or more goals three times during the regular season in his 23 years at the helm. Offensively, McDowell’s squads are consistently among the league leaders in the nation, highlighted by a team record 50 goals in 2010.

McDowell has been recognized as the OUA Coach of the Year seven times during his career at Queen’s, winning 17 provincial medals (4 gold, 9 silver, 4 bronze) and 4 national medals (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).

2011-12 OPPONENTS - BRIEF LOOKCarleton Ravens (@ Carleton Sept. 7, vs. Carleton Oct. 1) The Gaels opened their season vs. Carleton with Jacqueline Tessier scoring two goals as the No. 1 Queen’s Gaels beat the Carleton Ravens by a 4-0 score. The Gaels also received goals from Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. and Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. which put the match beyond doubt. Chantel Marson of London, Ont. recorded her first shutout of the season. The Gaels followed the first win up with a second as they defeated Carleton 2-0 in the Kingston leg of the season series. Kelli Chamberlain scored the game winner for the Gaels.Ottawa Gee Gees (vs. Ottawa Sept. 10, @ Ottawa Oct. 5) The Gaels earned some redemption from 2010 against the Gee-Gees as they won both regular season games against the team that handed them two losses one season ago. The Gaels won their first game against Ottawa by a 1-0 score as Jacqueline Tessier scored the Gaels lone goal and Chantel Marson recorded the clean sheet. The Ottawa leg of the series was also equally close as the Gaels edged out a 3-2 win on the road. Tessier recorded two more goals for the Gaels while Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C. scored the winner. Trent Excalibur (vs. Trent Sept. 11, @ Trent Oct. 17) The Gaels struggled to find the back of the net in their first game against the Excalibur as the team controlled play for the vast majority of the game before finally breaking through. Two unanswered goals by Breanna Burton of Ottawa and Jessie De Boer gave the Gaels a lead they didn’t relinquish. In the second game against Trent, the Gaels were dominant as a hat trick from Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. led the team to a 6-0 win. The Gaels also got goals from Riley Filion and Jackie Tessier in the win. Royal Military College of Canada Paladins (vs RMC Sept. 16, @ RMC Sept. 29)The Paladins were in tough against their Kingston rivals in both meetings between the two teams. In the first leg at Richardson Stadium, the Gaels surrendered a 1-0 lead to the Paladins after the first half. However, unanswered second half markers from Kelli Chamberlain, Riley Filion and Breanna Burton gave the Gaels a 3-1 lead which held up as the final score. Alexis McKinty, Jackie Tessier, Kelli Chamberlain and Breanna Burton scored goals for the Gaels in the second leg of the series as Queen’s dominated RMC by a 5-0 score in a game which didn’t see the ball in the Gaels half of the field. Ryerson Rams (vs. Ryerson Sept. 24, @ Ryerson Oct. 9) The Gaels opened up the first game between the two teams on the offensive. In the 12th minute, Fillion scored to put the Gaels on top. The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half. In the second half Kelli Chamberlain kicked in another goal for the Gaels. Chantel Marson recorded her fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win. The second game finished with an identical scoreline. Chamberlain kicked things off for the Gaels with a goal. Chantel Marson made multiple key saves to keep Ryerson scoreless entering the half. In the 79th minute of play Tessier scored, puting the Gaels ahead 2-0 .Toronto Varsity Blues (vs. Toronto Sept. 25, @ Toronto Oct. 8) The Varisty Blues were the lone team to give the Gaels trouble this season as the Varsity Blues held the Gaels to a draw and a loss. Toronto was the only team to hold the Gaels winless this season. In the first game the two teams battled to a 3-3 draw at Richardson Stadium in Kingston. In Toronto, the Gaels dropped a 1-0 decision despite many solid opportunities on goal, former Gael Eilish McConville scored the winner for Toronto.Laurentian Lady Vees (@ Laurentian Oct. 15, vs. Laurentian Oct. 23) The Gaels’ road victory over the Lady Vees came in crunch time as a resilient Laurentian team gave the Gaels difficulty. The Gaels jumped ahead before halftime on a Breanna Burton goal. After the half, Laurentian responded with a goal of their own in the 69th minute. Riley Filion scored one minute later to give the Gaels a win. In their season finale, the two teams met again and battled to a 2-2 tie in Kingston. Riley Filion scored a goal four minutes after kickoff and Jessie De Boer added a second for the Gaels. Nipissing Lakers (@ Nipissing Oct. 16, vs. Nipissing Oct. 22) The Gaels were dominant in their two games against the Lakers, outscoring Nipissing by a 9-1 margin. In the first leg, the Gaels won a 3-0 game on the strength of two goals by Kelli Chamberlain and a goal by Jackie Tessier in the span of five minutes. Chantel Marson and Sabrina Carew combined for the Gaels clean sheet in goal. No. 4 Gaels Advance To OUA Final Four With Win Over CarletonKINGSTON, Ont. (October 20, 2011) – The No. 4 Gaels move on to the OUA final four next weekend after they defeated the Carleton Ravens 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.OUA east first team all-star Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg opened the scoring for the Gaels as she made an inside out move past a defender and fired a shot towards the top corner for the goal.The Gaels controlled much of the flow early on in the game keeping possession deep in the Ravens end for most of the first half. OUA second team all-star Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. found some open space and fired a shot from just outside the box late in the first half. The shot was grabbed by Ravens goalkeeper Rachel Bedek of St. Thomas, Ont.In the second half Chamberlain came streaking down the left sideline and managed to chip a ball towards the net

that Tessier was easily able to tip past the keeper. The goal put the Gaels up 2-0 as they continued to get the ball in the Ravens zone.With their season inching closer to an end the Ravens started to take more chances to get back in the game. Gaels starting keeper Chantel Marson of London, Ont. held the Ravens at bay, pouncing on anything close.Bedek grabbed a quick shot midway through the second half fired by Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. McKinty took a pass off a corner kick but was unable to beat the keeper who caught the ball straight out of the air for the save.The Gaels closed out the game in the 40th minute of the second half when Breanna Burton of Ottawa brought the ball along the end line and fed OUA east MVP Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. who then directed the ball into the net giving the Gaels a 3-0 advantage. The score would hold up as the final on the day. Marson got the shutout for the Gaels while stopping all shots faced.

With the win the Gaels now move on to the OUA final four next weekend that will be hosted by the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gaels will play the winner of Windsor vs. McMaster. (November 5, 2011) - The Gaels women’s soccer team secured a spot in the CIS Championships and now move on to the OUA finals as they beat the McMaster Marauders 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. They will now take on the Laurier Golden Hawks in a rematch of the 2010 OUA Championship. With a spot in the OUA finals and a trip to the CIS Championships on the line the Gaels best players stepped up. (November 6, 2011) - The No. 4 Gaels and No. 5 Golden Hawks decided the OUA women’s soccer championship in penalty kicks after no goals were scored in regulation or extra time. The Gaels would convert on all five penalty kick attempts to take the 2011 OUA women’s soccer championship. This is the Gaels fifth OUA championship and first since 2002.Early on in the match Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg got the first chance of the game as she split two defenders and managed a quick shot on net. Laurier starting keeper Mallory Woeller of Kinburn, Ont. handled the ball easily for the save. Minutes later OUA East MVP RIley Filion of Alexandria, Ont. deflected a shot on goal that was again stopped by Woeller.Tessier broke in alone after a bounce off of a Laurier defender and attempted to chip the ball past the keeper, the ball just slid wide to the right of the goal. The Gaels

would continue to push for the opening score as OUA East Rookie of the Year Jessie De Boer of North Vancouver, B.C. headed a shot over just over the bar in her first attempt on goal in the game.Laurier came right back with a breakaway from Alyssa Lagonia of Kitchener, Ont. who fired a shot right at Gaels starting keeper Chantel Marson of London, Ont. who grabbed and held on for the save giving up no extra chance on the play.The Golden Hawks continued to keep the pressure coming on a mad fury of chances, Marson made one save before the Golden Hawks rattled a shot off the post on a second chance. The Gaels would clear and the score remained 0-0.Tessier and Jessica Carter of Waterloo, Ont. started to showing the physicality of the match when after getting tangled up Tessier was given a yellow card.Soon after Nicole Currie of Aurora, Ont. was given a yellow for Laurier and the Gaels were awarded free kick just outside the box, however the Gaels were unable to

capitalize.In the second half, the Golden Hawks thought they took a 1-0 lead but the play was ruled offside on the deflection off of a free kick.Off of a hand ball on Laurier the Gaels were awarded a free kick from the right side of the goal outside the box but De Boer’s shot went sailing wide as no Gael or Golden Hawk could track it down. Minutes later Chantal McFetridge of Kelowna, B.C. came up with the ball in front of the Laurier goal making a slick drop to an open Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. who fired the shot on goal. Woeller made the save for Laurier keeping the game scoreless.A through ball was led to Tessier who brought the ball in down the left side and chipped it out in front but Woeller took it out of harm’s way. Tessier would leave the field just before the final minute in regulation due to injury.

After a scoreless regulation the game then headed to extra time.In extra time the two teams tightened up their defensive games limiting chances. The Gaels closest chance for a goal came on a free kick from Mikyla Kay of Vancouver that sailed wide.In the second half of extra time the Golden Hawks had the ball in close but were called for a collision with Gaels keeper Marson. The Gaels took one final shot with a free kick from centre but were unable to break the scoreless game.The game went to penalty kicks and after Marson stopped the second Laurier shooter the Gaels held the advantage with one shooter remaining. Melissa Jung of Mississauga, Ont. converted and secured the Gaels fifth provincial championship and first since 2002. “My keeper made it a lot easier for me and

put less pressure on me” said defender Jung. “I just had to concentrate focus on my technique and just slot it.”The Gaels received penalty kick goals from Summer Rybicki, Mikyla Kay, Brienna Shaw, and Alexis McKinty in addition to Jung’s winner. Joining the Gaels and Golden Hawks in the CIS Championships at McGill will be the third place Ottawa Gee Gees who beat McMaster 4-0 earlier in the day.

RICHARDSON STADIUM

Did You Know?• The stadium is named after Captain George Taylor Richardson who

was a member of the Gaels football and hockey teams between 1902 and 1909

• Captain Richardson was an officer of the 14th Regiment P.O.W.R. of Kingston at the outbreak of World War I

• While leading a raid on positions held by the Germans outside Dranoutre, France on February 10, 1916, Captain Richardson was mortally wounded.

• James Armstrong Richardson, Captain Richardson’s brother, had the first Richardson Stadium built in memory of his brother.

• It was located immediately east of the current Tindall Field and had seating for 3,500 spectators.

• The first football game played at Richardson Stadium was on October 8, 1921 where Queen’s defeated the University of Toronto by a score of 9-5.

• After being the home of Queen’s football for 49 years, the old Richardson Stadium was closed in fitting fashion as Queen’s defeated the Waterloo Warriors 20-6 on November 7, 1970.

• The new Richardson Stadium was opened the following season, bosting seating for 10,258 spectators.

• Much of the current Richardson Stadium was constructed using pieces of the old Richardson Stadium, including the upper portion of the east bleachers.

Fun Facts• Home field for Gaels football and soccer.• Richardson Stadium is currently the second-largest natural grass

stadium in Canada, behind only BMO Field (21,800) in Toronto.• Hosted the 1922 Grey Cup between Queen’s and Edmonton.• Played host to the 2008 Churchill Cup (Rugby).• Canada defeated the USA by a score of 4-0 at Richardson Stadium in

an International Friendly prior to the U20 Men’s World Cup in 2007.• Hosted World Cup Qualifying in 2004 where Canada defeated Belize

twice by identical 4-0 scores.• In 2008, Richardson Stadium was ranked as the toughest football

stadium to play in the Ontario University Athletics.
