SUSTAINABILITY AWARENESS
Massport is committed to incorporating sustainability principles into ongoing construction of new facilities, terminals, and amenities. Four buildings at Boston Logan International Airport have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification: the Green Bus Depot, Terminal A, the Rental Car Center, and the Terminal E New Large Aircraft Wing. These LEED-certified buildings meet a set of high standards for design and construction that aim to improve environmental performance across metrics such as energy conservation, water efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and more. Massport is also currently seeking LEED certifications for several capital projects.
The Terminal E New Large Aircraft (NLA) Wing at Logan Airport is LEED-Gold certified.
On average, Massport’s LEED-certified buildings are 28% more energy-efficient than conventional buildings of the same type and perform 9% better than designed. The Terminal E New Large Aircraft Wing, a LEED -Gold certified project, improved water efficiency by 38% using low flow water fixtures.

Sustainability Tip
Massport encourages arriving and departing passengers to use high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) modes, such as public transit or Logan Express services, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with travel to-and-from the Airport. Eight Silver Line buses connecting the Airport to South Station are currently owned by Massport and operated by the MBTA, with Massport paying operating costs for the SL1 route. In 2016, Massport funded an approximate $6 million mid-life rebuild of these eight buses. The mid-life rebuild will extend the useful life of each vehicle by approximately eight years.
Massport provides free Silver Line rides from Logan Airport to South Station.
SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION
Every commute counts! The average commuter can save 20 pounds of CO2 emissions per day by taking public transit to work, rather than a private vehicle.* Massport provides subsidized MBTA passes to all employees. If you drive, try taking public transit at least one day this month.

WATER RESOURCES
Massport promotes environmental practices to improve water quality and protect Boston Harbor’s natural resources. Massport’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is implemented with the cooperation of Massport Facilities, its tenants, and contractors in order to minimize the potential for the release of de-icing and anti-icing chemicals, potential bacteria, fuel and oil, and other pollutants directly or indirectly into the storm drainage system. Stormwater samples are collected from the major Logan Airport outfall structures each month to document compliance. In 2017, 100% of stormwater samples were in compliance with permit standards. As part of these efforts, Massport also conducts routine SWPPP facility inspections and verifies employee trainings to continuously support efforts to protect water quality and minimize pollutant discharge into stormwater.
Logan Airport is surrounded on three sides by Boston Harbor.
A stormwater infiltration system was installed in the new taxi pool lot at Logan Airport. Rainwater collected on the gate canopy is diverted to a recharge system under the parking lot to keep rainwater in the ground and reduce the amount of surface runoff flowing into Boston Harbor. This initiative reduces stormwater pollutant entering into Boston Harbor and protects water quality.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Diversity and inclusion (D&I) are at the forefront of Massport property development. Massport required bidders for project development at Parcel D-2 in South Boston to produce D&I plans, which were treated as one of four equally weighted criteria in the selection process. As a result, the winning developers, Omni Hotels and Resorts and The Davis Companies, address D&I throughout the new project’s development. The Omni team is seeking to maximize the use of minority and women businesses in subcontracting roles in the construction process. Both the primary architect and the primary construction contractor have entered into joint venture or sub-contracting agreements with minority firms as 30% participants in the work. Additionally, a group of minority and women investors invested more than $7 million in project equity and will participate in project returns.

In June 2018, the Women’s Transportation Seminar – Boston Chapter (WTS-Boston) recognized Massport with the 2018 Employer of the Year Award. Women are a growing presence in our skilled workforce and we proudly support the advancement of professional women in the transportation industry.

PARKS AND OPEN SPACE
Massport recently completed the Thomas J. Butler Memorial Park in South Boston, which is named in memory of Massport’s former Director of External Affairs. This park is part of a project to replace the Conley Container Terminal truck traffic with paths, green space, and a dog park for the community. The 4.5-acre park also features a sound insulation barrier to support noise abatement. The park benefits the surrounding community as well as the surrounding environment by providing additional green space in a built-out urban environment.

NATURAL RESOURCES
Massport is committed to protecting natural resources. An ongoing initiative is to clean up the waste materials that wash up along its miles of shoreline. In June 2018, Massport conducted a cleanup at the Logan Airport Harborwalk at Jeffries Cove. Over the course of a week, the team was able to collect enough marine debris to fill up approximately 10 front loader buckets. Massport conducts routine cleanups of the Harborwalk and surrounding areas to help protect Boston Harbor’s important natural resources.
Massport staff dispose of debris in a front loader bucket. The debris washes up along Logan Airport’s Harborwalk at Jeffries Cove.
In 2016, Massport completed a successful project to restore Rumney Marsh in Saugus. Efforts included removing over 70,000 cubic yards of fill-sand and planting nearly 100,000 cordgrass plants. Massport continues to monitor the success of the initiative.

AIR QUALITY + GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS REDUCTION
The Terminal B Optimization Project at Logan Airport incorporates sustainability with View Dynamic Glass.
View Dynamic Glass, installed as part of the Logan Airport Terminal B Optimization Project that opened in November 2018, is an electrochromic window material that automatically tints to maximize natural light, reduce heat and glare, and provide unobstructed views throughout the day. In addition to improved comfort for passengers, the dynamic glass will reduce both cooling loads and lighting needs by 5%. This initiative helps reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
Conley Container Terminal has completed the replacement of five rubber-tired gantry crane engines with engines that meet Tier 4 pollution controls. These new engines will reduce air pollution by 290 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 29 tons of particulate matter (PM) and reduce fuel use by up to 30% over their lifetimes.

CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCY
In March 2018, a nor’easter heavily impacted the Boston region. In preparation, Massport carried out the first “real-life” emergency deployment of temporary flood barriers at Maritime properties, successfully protecting assets from surrounding floodwaters. This event provides one example of Massport’s ongoing efforts to develop strategies to improve its resiliency program. The team continues to enhance critical infrastructure through permanent and temporary flood-proofing. Additionally, to address communication and logistical challenges encountered during the March storm, Massport developed a Flood Resiliency Application. This tool informs decision-making, facilitates management oversight, and enables real-time field updates via mobile devices before, during, and after storm events.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Massport continues to give back through community engagement and volunteer efforts. In the spring, Massport employees participate in the City of Boston’s annual neighborhood Love Your Block clean-up (formerly Boston Shines). At the start of the school year, children ages 4 to 17 are provided with a new backpack filled with school supplies and new clothes. At Thanksgiving, Massport employees provide food donations to three community programs, which serve more than 500 families and individuals each month. For a full list of Massport’s partnership efforts, go to: www.massport.com/massport/community/community-partners
As part of the Love Your Block program, Massport employees volunteered time to help beautify neighboring communities, including East Boston and South Boston.
Each fall, Massport coordinates a food drive to help local families and alleviate hunger in the community. In 2018, Massport assisted three local organizations: The Crossroads Family Center, The Winthrop Food Pantry, and The South Boston Community Health Center.

In July 2018, two new chillers were installed at the Central Heating and Cooling Plant at Logan Airport that are 30% more efficient than the chillers they replaced. New cooling tower extensions were also installed at the plant, increasing cooling capacity by 15% and enabling servicing to take place at a more central location. Both installations help to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining a high level of service for Logan Airport passengers and staff. Massport is committing to its energy conservation goal by investing in energy efficiency measures, including high efficiency lighting and automated building energy management systems.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
New chillers at Logan Airport’s Central Heating and Cooling Plant help Massport save energy.
Massport recently retrofitted the Conley Container Terminal high mast yard lighting with LEDs, reducing its energy use by half and resulting in over 175,000 kWh of annual energy savings.

Sustainability Tip
WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING
Massport has been developing solutions to encourage waste reduction, reduce the level of contamination in the recycling stream, and increase the amount of materials properly recycled, despite industry-wide challenges. Massport conducted a comprehensive waste assessment of Logan Airport to better understand its waste streams, identify challenges, and develop recommendations for improving the waste management and recycling program. The waste assessment team conducted 72 total sorts (55 trash and 17 recycling), categorizing more than 5.5 tons of material. A robust plan is being developed, which will identify multi-pronged strategies to implement recommended initiatives and promote continuous improvement of the waste management and diversion system.
The waste assessment team sorts through trash as part of the 2018 waste audit at Logan Airport.
Recycling contamination happens when incorrect items are placed into single-stream recycling bins. Common recycling contaminants that should not be placed into recycling bins include: food and liquid waste, plastic bags and wraps, Styrofoam, textiles, and plastic straws. Check out MassDEP’s Recycle Smart Guide for a full list of what can and cannot be recycled: www.recyclesmartma.org

TENANTS
Hilton Hotel at Logan Airport began a large-scale composting program, diverting over 95,000 lbs. of organic waste in the first six months. This equals 47.5 tons or almost 10 elephants. Compost created from the Hilton Hotel program is being used at area schools to grow vegetables in raised bed gardens. In addition to these efforts, Hilton minimized its use of disposable plastics by switching to compostable alternatives for straws and cups.
The Hilton Hotel at Logan Airport began composting in March 2018.
Massport tenants Pappas Enterprises and WB Mason have partnered to cover their South Boston warehouse in solar power. The 2,700-kilowatt solar array, comprised of 7,800 solar panels, is the largest solar project in Boston.
