2019 ING-FINEX CFO of the Year Award
Augusto D. Bengzon of Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) was named 2019 ING-FINEX
CFO of the Year in a ceremony held on November 20, 2019 at New World Hotel,
Makati City.
“Every year, there a lot of challenges, as well as opportunities and risks that the
CFO faces. It is all about being prepared for both upside and downside. I think
that is the main challenge that the CFOs today face,” Bengzon said.
For the past 13 years, the longest-running CFO search has been jointly sponsored
by the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) and Dutch
financial giant ING Bank N.V. It shines a spotlight on the CFO’s role as co-
pilots” of their chief executive officers in driving and executing their company’s
overall strategy needs.

49th IAFEI World Congress
Last October 24 – 26, 2019, the Associazione Nazionale
Direttori Amministrativi e Finanziari (ANDAF) hosted the
49th World Congress, in conjunction with their 42nd ANDAF
National Congress in Matera, Italy. There were more than 400
delegates with 80 attendees coming from IAFEI member-
institutes. FINEX President Eusebio Tan, IAFEI Chairman
and 2008 FINEX President Eduardo Francisco, IAFEI
Advisory Council Chairman and 2003 FINEX President
Conchita Manabat, FINEX member Felix Sy and FINEX
Executive Director and IAFEI Head of Secretariat Michael
Vinluan attended the conference.
This year, FINEX invited speakers who discussed “Integrated
Reporting in Today’s Changing Environment” and “Strategic
Investing for the Future”. The first topic described how
companies need to provide complete transparency in the way
they are operating their businesses. Aside from the financial
numbers that are being achieved, companies need to describe
in detail how they intend to sustain growth well into the future
The topic on Strategic Investing was presented by Minette
Navarete of Kickstart Ventures, who described why it is
important for Ayala to look at new opportunities in the market
in order to survive. She also shared how they evaluate and
filter the various opportunities that are presented to them.
This year’s summit also covered the evolving role of the CFO.
This was presented by an Ernst and Young (EY) partner from
China, who based his report on numerous studies and surveys
that were conducted by EY. According to these studies, the
CFO plays a crucial role in strengthening the structure of the
company. In what was traditionally a role centred on
controllership, compliance and treasury, this has now
expanded to include strategy and visioning. The focus of
today’s CFO has shifted to the triple bottom line of profit,
planet and people which are the necessary components for
sustainable growth. CFOs are leading the charge to adapt
processes, pricing strategies, technologies and capital
expenditures to support evolving revenue drivers. The CFO is

… And All That Jazz
In the second canto of FINEX Research
and Development Foundation, Inc.’s The
Sound of the Market Series, the FINEX
Arts Committee staged another
successful affair last November 12th at
the Top of the Alpha, Alphaland
Corporate Tower, Makati.
Dubbed “All That Jazz”, the mini-concert
was bannered by a trio of ladies called
Baihana – Cebuano term for woman.
Baihana is composed of talented and
multi-faceted singers who first met in the
UP College of Music (UPCM). Anna
Achacoso-Graham, the group’s Soprano
2 and special events planner is a UPCM
graduate with a diploma in Creative and
Performing Musical Arts in Asian music.
Anna’s musical roots can be traced to her
lola - Armida Siguion Reyna of Aawitan
Kita fame. Mel Torre is Baihana’s Alto
and gig coordinator. Aside from jazz,
Mel is also an accomplished blues singer
as a substitute vocalist of the Blue Rats –
the country’s longest-running blues band.
Just to polish up her resume, this cum
laude graduate of Molecular Biology and
Biotechnology from UP is also a licensed
yoga teacher, a barre3 instructor and a
certified instructor for the Lagree
Method. Rounding up the group is
Soprano 1 Krina Cayabyab – a royal blue
blood in the local music world. A summa
cum laude graduate from UPCM with a
degree of Bachelor in Music major in
Choral Conducting, Krina is the daughter
of National Artist for Music Ryan
Cayabyab and Emmy Punsalan, herself a
noted soprano and theater artist. With her
pedigree and training, Krina naturally
handles most of the vocal and musical
arrangements of the group. The Baihana
troika is bonded by their interest in swing
jazz music and vocal harmonies that were
quite popular in the 50s and 60s. Their
highly entertaining repertoire consisted
of refreshing jazzed-up takes on hit songs
by the Chordettes, Supremes, Beatles,
Michael Jackson and even some Original
Pilipino Music.
Adding spice to the evening was the
sultry Nicole Tejedor, the Saxophone
Diva of Manila and also a UPCM
alumna. Nicole rendered a soulful
Finally, accomplished singer, theater actor and Philippine
Idol runner-up Gian Magdangal took the stage and delighted
the crowd with a lively medley of songs from the musicals La
la Land and The Greatest Showman.
Amidst the chaos of city traffic and the rush to meet year-end
targets, the Top of the Alpha was a virtual oasis for Finex
members and guests who all enjoyed the performances of a
genuinely gifted set of musicians as they savored their drinks
and dined on the scrumptious dinner spread.
The sold-out event was also graced by the Japanese
Ambassador to the Philippines H. E. Koji Haneda and his
charming wife Madame Ihoko Haneda as well as Consul (of
Japan) Masayuki & Mrs. Udagawa.
Unlike most of today’s concerts, the well-curated line-up of
artists and songs proves that singers do not just have to reach
the highest notes to display true talent and come up with a
totally entertaining show. Bravo!
We are already looking forward to the 3rd part of the Sound of
the Market Series by the FINEX Arts Committee.
