For Staff, Residents,
Family & Friends
Hello Everyone!
I wanted to take this opportunity to let everyone
know that this is the time of year that a lot of our
employees take vacation time. Secondary to this,
you might have noticed, or will notice some
changes in assignments for our nurses and CNA’s.
All of our staff is trained on all units so we are
able to make changes if necessary. We make every
effort to make minimal changes, and your
understanding is very much appreciated!
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome
our new staff: Kerri-Lynn Fied, RN,
Elisha Rondon, CNA, and Kathleen Blais, CNA.
Welcome to the Heritage Hills team! We are very
happy to have you!
I hope everyone is having a great summer!
Remember the importance of staying hydrated
during this time of year!!!
Brenda Blair, RN
Many of our resident enjoy having their
favorite “snacks” kept at their bedside, or in
a drawer in their room. We all look for our
favorite snacks at one time or another…
candy, potato chips, crackers, cookies, etc.
However, with summertime, comes BUGS,
namely ants. If you choose to keep snacks in
your room, please keep them stored in air-
tight containers such as Tupperware or
tins. We certainly want you to keep your
snacks for your enjoyment, but we do not
want the summertime “friends” that may
come in from the outside looking for goodies
too!!
When visiting during these very warm
summer months, please consider bringing
your resident something cool they like to
drink. Perhaps something that is not offered
here.. iced coffee, frozen lemonade, Ga-
torade, iced tea or smoothies. It is so
important that residents consume lots of
liquids and if it is brought
in by family and shared,
they will enjoy it!!

Why Are They
Called The “Dog
Days” of Summer?
We often hear about the “dog days” of summer
but few know what the expression means. Some
say that it signifies hot sultry days “not fit for a
dog,” others suggest it’s the weather in which
dogs go mad. The Dog Days of Summer
describes the most oppressive period of summer,
between July 3rd and August 11th each year. But
where did the term come from? And what does it
have to do with dogs?
The phrase is actually a reference to the fact that,
during this time, the Sun occupies the same
region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visi-
ble from any part of Earth and part of the
constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This
is why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.
In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the Sun.
On July 23rd, specifically, it is in conjunction
with the Sun, and because the star is so bright,
the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off
heat and added to the Sun’s warmth, accounting
for the long stretch of sultry weather. They
referred to this time as diēs caniculārēs, or “dog
days.”
Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to
mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this
alignment of Sirius with the Sun—
July 3 to Aug. 11.
Fried green tomatoes are a side dish
usually found in the
Southern United States,
made from unripe
(green) tomatoes coated
with cornmeal and fried.

Where is your family from?
My parents were from Italy. My family is from Providence. Do you like your name?
Oh yes, I wouldn’t change anything What was your favorite subject in school?
Reading. It’s interesting. I got to learn a lot!!! Do you hold a special skill?
I took piano lessons for a short time but I wouldn’t say that’s special. I like coloring though! What did you spend the most time doing
growing up?
My brother owned a supermarket so after school I would go there to help out. What is your favorite thing to eat?
I have to say, cake. What was your most exciting trip?
Going to Miami, Florida to visit my closest friends. They send me packages every now and then.
Roberta remembers going to the beach and going
on vacation. “I’m not a fan of the heat but family
and friends made it bearable.”
Coco considered herself a bathing beauty!!!
Specifically in 1956 where she spent more time
sunbathing and getting the guys attention than
swimming. “I had a beautiful black “Esher
Williams” bathing suit.”
As for Danny, he spent summertime at his New
Hampshire house. “Plantation Beach is right at the
edge of the property on Lake Winnipesauke.”
Per Barbara’s husband, Dick, summers were spent
down the Cape with their girls. Swimming,
cook-outs, and outside games. Good times with the
family. “The Cape is the place to be.”
Darlene fondly remembers many birthdays in the
month of August. Her son, granddaughte4r, and
niece. ”Wonderful blessing for our entire family.
We gather at the beach in Little Compton for the
birthday celebrations. South Shore Beach
Campground of Round Meadows holds a parade,
games, activities and a pig roast. We all dressed up
in Halloween costumes. Everyone enjoys
swimming, crabbing and fishing.”
