ATTENTION BOARD SECRETARY – ATTENTION TEACHING STAFF REPRESENTATIVE

________________________________________________________________________

It would be appreciated if School Boards and Teaching Staffs would consider each of the resolutions at their own meetings prior to the PCCE Membership Meeting and provide instruction to your Official Delegates to the PCCE Membership.

Delegates to the Meeting:

▪ Your school community must delegate one Board Representative AND one Educator Representative. For your school to be considered “present” at the meeting, both delegates must be in attendance, so please ensure that both groups appoint a representative. Your school may wish to have more than one Board member or Educator attend the meeting (which is great!), but each group (Board and Educator) must designate one person to be the official representative.

▪ It is encouraged that the Board Representative be a non-staff member

▪ Each Board Representative and each Educator Representative will have one equal vote each (only effective when consensus fails to achieve a decision).

How to deal with appointing delegates:

1. Both the School Society Board and Teaching Staff must appoint a PCCE Representative as explained above.

2. Prior to the AGM both the School Society Board and Teaching Staff should include the PCCE on their agenda to discuss items that will be dealt with at the AGM.

PCCE BOARD NOMINATIONS ________________________________________________________________________ To be distributed at meeting.

COMMUNITY MEMBER FROM ALBERTA NORTH CENTRAL The PCCE Board submits Jonathan Slomp as a nomination to fill this position. I live in Ponoka with my wife Candace and my five children. For the past 2 years, I have worked in Leduc as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Therapist for Alberta Health Services. Other Mental Health Clinics I have worked in as a Children’s Therapist over the past ten years include Rimbey, Wetaskiwin and Lacombe.

My children currently attend Ponoka Christian School and the Lord willing my oldest will be attending the Central Alberta Christian High School in the fall.

We attend the Parkland Reformed Church in Ponoka. I currently teach a catechism class for my church, as well as a member of the evangelism committee and I am part of group that offers a bible study to patients of the psychiatric hospital in Ponoka.

My wife received her high school diploma from Parkland Immanuel Christian School in Edmonton and I from the Covenant Canadian Reformed School in Neerlandia. We have personally experienced the blessing of a Christian education for ourselves and our children and strive to support and advocate for it when the opportunity presents itself.

My commitment to Christian education has provided me with the opportunity to serve on the school board for PCS in the past. I am currently a member of the policy committee for PCS as well. I am excited for this new opportunity to promote Christian education and, if elected, I will strive to serve in a way that is pleasing in God’s eyes.

COMMUNITY MEMBER FROM ALBERTA SOUTH CENTRAL The PCCE Board submits Lenny Houweling as a nomination to fill this position. My name is Lenny Houweling and I live in Calgary with my wife Krista and 4 kids, Alicia (14), Tayah (12), Jordie (10) and Landon (7). My children all attend Calgary Christian School. My wife is a Calgary Christian alumni, and I am an Immanuel Christian alumni (Lethbridge). I was born and raised on a farm in Southern Alberta where I learned the importance of family, hard work, and true commitment. I moved off the family farm to finish my Automotive Repair Technician Red Seal and worked in that field for 16 years. Almost 3 years ago I started my own business called Kaizen Initiatives Inc. I coach organizations on leadership development, process improvement, and building culture amongst their employees using the Servant Pyramid Model. My family and I attend Maranatha Christian Reformed Church where I serve in several areas. I serve dinner a few times a year for struggling Bowness community members and assist with a monthly Family Movie Night offered to the community. I am currently assisting our Church Leadership in restructuring the church council to help it run more efficiently and effectively. I am also currently serving on the Policy Committee for Calgary Christian School. I believe very strongly in educating our children in a Christian environment. Joining this board will help me both learn more about how I can serve in our community as well as assist in providing support to our leaders in Christian education. PCCE AGM APRIL 13, 2019 5

ADMINISTRATOR FROM MEMBER SCHOOL COMMUNITY

The PCCE Board submits Terri-Lynn Emms as a nomination to fill this position. Terri-Lynn is passionate about collecting and connecting ideas that propel transformative Christian learning at her school. Her sense of calling to education emerged at a young age. She wrote in her Grade 2 journal that she wanted to grow up and go to The King’s College and become a teacher. She completed a B.A. and B. Ed. at The King’s University and a Master of Education Degree at the University of Alberta. She currently serves as principal at Drayton Christian School. Terri-Lynn’s full life includes raising her four teenage children with her husband Kevin. Her deep hope is that thinking about being in someone else’s shoes (eg. students, parents, staff members) will enable her to leave footprints worth following.

COMMUNITY MEMBER FROM ALBERTA NORTH

The PCCE Board submits Tim Hoogland as a nomination to fill this position. Tim has finished his first term in this capacity and is willing to stand for a second term.

Tim has been involved in Christian education for nearly his whole life: first as a child attending Lacombe Christian School, then as a teen attending Central Alberta Christian High School (Lacombe, Alberta), then as a student at Dordt College (Sioux Center, IA) and currently as a parent of children attending Covenant Christian School (CCS) in Leduc, Alberta. As a believer in the Triune God of the Bible, he appreciates the integration of faith in the subjects and lessons his children learn at school. He and his wife appreciate that values taught at home are reinforced at school.

His passion for Christian education is evident in his prior participation on the School Executive at CCS and also the Transportation Committee. He has loved seeing Teaching for Transformation (TFT) flourish and be integrated into the classroom.

Tim is honoured to let his name stand for the PCCE board.

COMMUNITY MEMBER FROM OUTSIDE ALBERTA

The PCCE Board submits Rod Harder as a nomination to fill this position. Rod has finished his first term in this capacity and is willing to stand for a second term.

PCCE OPERATIONS REPORT ________________________________________________________________________

Our Goal: to be your essential partner in Christian Education

LEARNING EXPERIENCES

• Learning within environments that provide more than just content • The experience connected to the learning is key Update The 2018 PCCE Leadership Cohort Conference was held on May 10-11, 2018 at the Entheos Retreat Centre. Harold Roscher, Director and Chaplain of the Edmonton Native Healing Centre, served as the keynote and explored the topic of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) concepts in a Christian school context. Participants were challenged in their understanding of the historical context surrounding this topic, were able to candidly discuss some of the issues connected to FNMI in the Christian school context and experienced a call to reconciliation. Our 2019 Leadership Cohort Conference will be held on May 9-10, 2019. We are really excited about having Dr. Rod Wilson to lead our time together. We are incredibly grateful to the central Alberta schools, and the staff at Gateway Christian School for doing a phenomenal job hosting the 2018 PCCE Convention. The keynote speaker was Carlos Whittaker. Carlos Whittaker was very well-received as our keynote speaker and as a result, Taber Christian School is inviting him to speak at their first-ever Student Leadership event “Above All Else” on April 2. They have invited other PCCE schools and look to have between 350-500 attendees. PCCE is a sponsor of this event. The 2019 PCCE Convention will be held at Edmonton Christian Northeast School on October 24-25, 2019. The keynote speaker will be Brad Griffin, Director of the Fuller Youth Institute. PCCE is hosting a 4-day Teaching for Transformation (TFT) training session for new teachers or teachers wanting a “refresher.” Days 1 and 2 of TFT 101 were held in Red Deer prior to the Teachers Convention in October. Day 3 was held regionally and Day 4 is coming up on April 30 and May 1. This year’s cohort has 40 participants from 15 PCCE schools.

PCCE AGM APRIL 13, 2019 15

Page 20: 2019 Annual General Meeting Package - PCCE Documents... · Winnipeg and in 2017 graduated from the International Corporate Directors program. Rod is enjoying his second stint as a

One of our ongoing goals is to the increase the Teaching for Transformation capacity of PCCE Schools. To this end:

• We are providing intensive on-site Professional Development (PD) training for Westpark School in TFT practices. It is exciting to see our newest PCCE school become fully engaged in TFT!

• As well, we have led one or more TFT focused PD sessions at Edmonton Christian, Drayton Christian, Providence Christian, Rocky Christian, Fort McMurray Christian and Neerlandia Public Christian schools.

• In addition, we consulted with local leaders to plan TFT PD days at Trinity Christian,

Immanuel Christian, Medicine Hat Christian and Gateway Christian. • We created a “TFT Teacher Check-In” that 8 of our schools have used in a variety of ways

(i.e., instructional coaching sessions, planning for PD, etc.) to determine where they are on their TFT journey and figure out potential next steps. We encourage all our schools to make use of this tool to help guide their work in offering an integrally Christian education to their community.

• We have connected with the TFT lead teachers in most schools to support and

encourage them in their work. We have also started to discuss support plans for the 2019/2020 school year.

• We are looking to hold a learning event specifically for TFT lead teachers to continue to

equip them to lead well at their schools. Depending on schedules, this will either be held this spring or next fall.

• Jeremy, along with four PCCE leaders (TFT lead teachers or principals) attended a 2-day

TFT Instructional Coaching Intensive in Surrey, BC. This was a great learning experience and served to equip the participants in having focused coaching conversations. PCCE covered the costs of registration for the participants.

Recognizing that it can be challenging for our Manitoba schools to participate in some of our experiences, last spring we organized a one-day Teachers’ Convention in Winnipeg for Calvin Christian and Westpark Schools. Gayle delivered the keynote address, as well as led 2 workshops. Other workshops were led by teachers from Calvin and Westpark, along with other local speakers. Many of our schools are wanting to take a closer look at their Bible curriculum with a goal of facilitating faith formation in their students. As such, PCCE hired Rod Snaterse to develop the Bible Curriculum Redesign Journey; a program for schools to use to help shape their Bible Program. This project builds heavily on the work of Edmonton Christian Schools. School communities are encouraged to contact PCCE if they are interested in using this resource. Jeremy attended a meeting of the PCCE Southern Alberta principals and introduced this resource to them.

PCCE AGM APRIL 13, 2019 16

Since our last AGM, Board Governance workshops were held at Drayton Christian, Calvin Christian, Medicine Hat Christian, Fort McMurray Christian, Rocky Christian, Neerlandia Public Christian and Covenant Christian. In addition, a session was held in Lacombe for Central Alberta schools. We highly recommend that school boards host a Governance workshop every year or two. PCCE can offer both the “general” workshop (roles and responsibilities of the Board, governance vs management, organizational structure) as well as specific workshops based on local needs. Outside of the US, we continue to have discussions with schools that are interested in TFT. The Christian Academy of Japan is very serious about TFT and we are currently doing some remote work with them and are putting together a plan for 2019-2020. Gayle was a co-leader at the Christian Schools International sponsored Educational Leadership Development Institute (ELDI) which took place in July 2018. Two aspiring leaders from PCCE schools (Covenant Christian and Medicine Hat Christian) attended and were among the 25 participants from both Canadian and American Christian Schools. Interestingly, 3 of the 5 leaders were from the Canadian regional offices, and generally the percentage of Canadian participants is disproportionally high. Many of the current leaders in PCCE schools have attended ELDI in the past.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

• Learning together, as a group and within a group • Together moving toward expanding perspective and thought-patterns

Update In partnership with our Canadian colleagues, PCCE is investigating being involved in a Canada-wide research project on “Relational Schools” that would dive deeply into the importance of healthy relationships in student flourishing. Provided the project goes ahead and some PCCE schools participate, we have an external grant in place that will help subsidize costs. Gayle, along with several of our Central Alberta principals attended the second Global Christian School Leadership Summit in San Antonio in January. It was a large conference (over 1000 registrants), with a very diverse and international flavour. It was truly a “big tent” conference including speakers and participants representative of the wide spectrum of Christian education. While the conference itself was good, the networking opportunities were excellent. Gayle also participated in two pre-conference days that involved visiting local schools. These were excellent learning opportunities as well. Jeremy has been spending a significant amount of time previewing the proposed new Alberta K-4 Curriculum. At present it does not look like any PCCE schools will be fully engaged in the optional implementation, but if any do, PCCE will be coming alongside them to engage in learning around a Christian perspective on the curriculum in terms of both content and process. Assuming the curriculum roll-out schedule goes ahead, PCCE will be ready to provide schools with support in implementation within a Christian school context.

Jeremy will be attending the Christian Deeper Learning Conference in Frisco, Texas in March. Several PCCE members will also be participating. This conference has become THE gathering of Christian schools’ leaders who are thinking seriously and creatively about what it means to be an integrally Christian school in our current contexts. Hugo VanderHoek has been supporting our independent schools in their ongoing conflict with Alberta Education concerning the implementation of Bills 10 and 24. He has provided the school leaders with updated information about the actions of the ministry and assistance in understanding the impact and importance of those actions. In some cases that came in the form of template letters of reply. In others it was conversations to help communities communicate with the ministry and with its society members. While the schools relied on the Justice Center for Constitutional Freedoms for legal advice, Hugo’s role was to support principals and boards to have confidence that they were following a good path. In addition, the awareness that they were part of a community of schools that were dealing with the same issues was also important. This was particularly significant for one board that did not have a seasoned school leader to rely on.

Hugo is also working to support schools in determining their compensation packages for staff. For the current year, Hugo has gathered data from the independent schools and distributed that to schools for information purposes. In the future, the goal is to create a more comprehensive compensation report that would include recommendations for schools to follow.

RELATIONSHIPS

• Opportunities for flourishing relationships • Strengthening partnerships within and beyond PCCE

Update Relationships within and among PCCE An ongoing area of work for our staff is ensuring a strong sense of community among our school communities. We have a very diverse membership: multiple provinces, urban and rural, large and small, independent and alternative. It is important for all of us to maintain our sense of togetherness despite our differences, as ultimately there are way more we have in common than what differentiates us. We are encouraging our community to remain committed to each other when the tendency could be to drift apart at a time when Christian Educators increasingly need each other. To support our independent schools in the areas unique to them, PCCE hired Hugo VanderHoek as a part-time consultant/facilitator to support and provide leadership for the independent schools in Alberta.

• Hugo VanderHoek is also the principal at Providence Christian School in Monarch Alberta and has many years of experience as a leader in Christian schools in both Alberta and British Columbia.

• Hugo has been working hard with our independent schools; supporting them as they

continue to “navigate the (turbulent) waters” of the current educational landscape in our region.

PCCE Board Chair, Chris Weening and PCCE staff Gayle Monsma, Hugo VanderHoek and Jeremy Horlings, met in November with a group of representatives from our Alberta independent schools. They met to discuss current issues, concerns and frustrations and how to support each other going forward. Our PCCE office staff once again organized a special event for Administrative Professionals’ Day. In May, a handful of administrative assistants gathered in Lacombe, and participated in a workshop led by Gayle on “Communication in a School Setting.” There was lots of time for related conversations and questions. some Strategic Planning activities. While the “big picture” work is complete, the hard work of figuring out the details is now before them. Both Gayle and Jeremy along with delegates from most of our member schools, attended the CSC Conference in Ottawa in September. PCCE helped subsidize the registration costs for participants from our community. Many also participated in the Deeper Learning Conference prior to the CSC Conference. The next CSC Leadership Conference will be in September 2020 in Vancouver. 2022 will be the next time PCCE will host. Jeremy has also been involved in the re-establishment of the Standing Committee of Learning along with the Directors of Learning from SCSBC and Edvance. There is a renewed interest in the sharing of resources and towards possible future cross-Canada collaborative projects. Partner: EduDeo Ministries

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with EduDeo so that they can use TFT in the schools that they work with in developing countries, while ensuring the integrity of what is being offered. As part of the assurance of TFT integrity, a TFT Bootcamp for Leaders was held in June. Participants included EduDeo Walking Together Coordinators and Facilitators, as well as staff from the Education department at The King’s University and the Directors of Learning from the Society of Christian Schools in BC (SCSBC). The goal was to equip the participants to lead TFT well in their communities. Three guests from our partner organization in Zambia visited the PCCE region in September prior to the Christian Schools Canada Conference. It was great to be able to host them and visit several PCCE schools. They were very keen to learn more about TFT implementation. Gayle spent about ten days in Zambia working with our partner schools there. She and Karen Gerritsma led four full days of sessions on TFT and the new sexuality education curriculum in Zambia specifically how to approach it from a Christian perspective. In addition, they visited about eight school communities over two days. You can read more about this and see some pictures https://edudeo.com/walking-together/20190204/. Partner: Society of Christian Schools in British Columbia (SCSBC)

In October 2018, PCCE hosted a Senior Leadership Enrichment Seminar with senior leaders from within our community and with leaders from SCSBC. Melanie Humphreys, President of The King’s University, was the speaker at our first gathering and approximately 15 leaders participated in the session. This same group of leaders will be attending a similar session hosted by SCSBC in April, with author and pastor Mark Buchanan. The goal of these sessions is to gather the leaders of large and often multi-campus schools to encourage them in their work, to equip them in their tasks and to facilitate the development of a network of leaders.

Partner: Center for the Advancement of Christian Education (CACE)

Teaching for Transformation continues to be gathering interest beyond PCCE and to handle the growth in the United States, PCCE signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CACE to be our US partner. As such, our work in the US is winding down. Our TFT contracts with Lynden Christian and Bellevue Christian are in their final year and our work with the cohort of five schools in South Grand Rapids will wrap up next year. We are very excited about the continued growth of TFT in the US under the leadership of CACE. Partner: Christian Schools International (CSI)

Gayle is a member of the Board of Trustees of Christian Schools International and serves on the Membership Committee. The Board meets three times per year in person and since our last AGM; meetings were held in Chicago in June, Toronto in November and St Louis in March. At the meeting in Toronto, the CSI Board had joint sessions with the Canadian Pension and Benefits Trustees. It is believed that this is the first time this happened but as the CSI Board is the “plan sponsor” it was good to meet together. There are ongoing and continuing conversations about the relationship between CSI and the Canadian Christian Schools. Partner: The King’s University

Both Gayle and Jeremy have been guest speakers in a variety of classes in the Education program. In addition, Gayle is part of the Teacher Education Advisory Committee. Partner: Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta: (AISCA) Both Hugo and Gayle have had contact with John Jagersma, Executive Director, of the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta (AISCA) concerning various topics impacting independent (and other “schools of choice”). Most recently, Hugo spoke to him about the promotion of legislative changes regarding Independent Schools by our future government. John will share some ideas after he returns from a visit with independent school representatives in BC to learn whether some of BC’s law provisions would be of benefit in our Alberta context. Partner: Christian Education National (CEN)

In the past year, we have deepened our relationship with our Australian sister organization. We had the honour of hosting a team of 5 delegates from Australia in September. They visited several PCCE schools and connected with school leaders. We received permission to use their School Review resource at Calvin Collegiate in Winnipeg. It is a sound resource and we will be making arrangements to continue using it while further adapting it to fit our context. CEN is hosting an international conference in July and Gayle will be attending, and possibly presenting a workshop. Along with a couple of colleagues from SCSBC, we are also arranging for a study tour following the conference to visit several schools and learn from our innovative Australian colleagues.

GENERAL OPERATIONS Update Communications Profile Over the summer the PCCE Administrative Assistants (Marilyn Schulz and Ruth Pelech) worked on developing our new website using Wild Apricot. While the website continues to be informative for people interested in PCCE, the main focus is on supporting our membership through effective management of information, “members only” sections where collegial conversations can take place and other useful features. One still evolving aspect is the creation of functional online forums that could be used by all our membership groups to share information etc. We currently have our TFT 101 cohort piloting this function. The monthly distribution of The Prairie Update has continued with a new and updated look. The Update includes information for school board members, leaders and teachers. If you are NOT receiving it, please contact our office to be added to the distribution list. In addition, we have added Twitter to our “communications plan.” Follow us: @prairiecentre, #TFT. We use Twitter to both celebrate the PCCE community and to encourage professional learning among our members. Staffing Updates We hired two new employees this fall: Jeremy Horlings was employed as the Associate Executive Director. Jeremy comes to us from Gateway Christian School with experience as a teacher, administrator, and TFT leader.

Hugo VanderHoek was hired as our Independent School Consultant. Hugo is also the principal at Providence Christian School and has many years of experience as a leader in Christian schools in both Alberta and British Columbia. Brian Doornenbal’s employment with PCCE ended at the end of last year around the same time he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. You can follow his journey at this link: http://briandoornenbal.blogspot.com/ We continue to reflect on the life and legacy of Doug Monsma, former Director of Learning, who lost his battle with cancer in October. To read archives of his blog use this link: http://hisnextpage.blogspot.com/ Gail Van Eerden, former Administrative Assistant, who also served the PCCE community most recently as Bookkeeper retired. She continues to provide support and mentorship to Ruth Pelech who assumed the bookkeeping role this past year.

PCCE committed to convening a Task Force to investigate our current membership and fees structure. The Task Force is to report back to the PCCE Board at the April 2019 Board Meeting Members are representative of the diversity of the PCCE community: large/small schools, rural/urban and independent/alternative). The Task Force will analyze the current model (strengths and weaknesses), look at alternative models used by similar organizations (strengths and weaknesses) and make recommendations for PCCE. The Task Force met in January and includes the following members:

• Martin Folkerts - Principal at Lacombe Christian School • Lennard VanderShee - Board Chair at Central Alberta Christian High School (CACH) • Peter Buisman - Executive Director for the Edmonton Society for Christian Education • Gerrit Schooten- Teacher at Providence Christian School • Audra Chase - Admissions and Administrative Coordinator at Trinity Christian School • Gayle Monsma - Executive Director at PCCE

This meeting was used primarily to understand the tasks they were given, to share background information and to determine the information needed to make any recommendations. The Task Force is currently in the process of gathering data and will meet again in the spring to review and determine next steps. The understanding is that the Task Force will make an interim report to the PCCE Board in the spring, with a full report completed by the end of 2019. Any changes would come into effect for the 2020-21 school year.

LEADERSHIP COHORT REPORT ________________________________________________________________________ Since the last AGM for The Prairie Centre for Christian Education in April, 2018 the Leadership Cohort (LC) has, while continuing to provide outstanding Christian leadership in their respective communities, been involved in a number of things collectively. The LC, which is comprised of Principals, Vice and Assistant Principals, and Executive Directors from PCCE member schools have: Met collectively at the Spring LC Conference in May 2018 at the Entheos Retreat Centre near Bragg Creek, Alberta. The keynote for this conference was Harold Roscher, Director and Chaplain of the Edmonton Native Healing Centre. Sessions were centered around a Christian application of the new First Nations, Metis, and Inuit curriculum with an overview of historical and current issues in this community, a time of candid discussion, and then a call to reconciliation. In addition to this time of shared learning, leaders also came together for times of corporate worship and prayer and collegial connection. There is much anticipation for this year’s Spring LC Conference where Dr. Rod Wilson will be our keynote and will be exploring the topic of ‘Identity Theft: Are Your Roots Getting Rain?’ which will focus on our identities and spiritual rootedness. Participated in the 2018 Christian Schools Canada Conference that took place in Ottawa, Ontario in late September. The PCCE provided subsidies to offset the cost of attending and the vast majority of our schools ended up sending their school leaders to attend. The theme of the conference was ‘Faithful Presence’. The next CSC Conference will be in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2020. Attended alongside their staff the 2018 PCCE Educators’ Convention that was well-hosted by Gateway Christian School in Red Deer, Alberta in mid-October. Carlos Whittaker, author of Moment Maker and Kill the Spider served as an energetic, dynamic, and thought-provoking keynote. Overwhelming highlights included times of worship together, as well as attending a variety of workshops and also a Leaders’ Meeting. We look forward to the next Convention that will take place in Edmonton in October. Got together with colleagues from the Society of Christian Schools in BC (SCSBC) for a Senior Leadership Seminar that was hosted at The King’s University in Edmonton in late October. This meeting was specifically for Executive Directors or School Superintendents from the two organizations and had Melanie Humphreys, President of The King’s University, present materials and lead discussions particularly surrounding inclusion in schools. The next Senior Leadership Seminar will be hosted by SCSBC in May. Continued to pray for our fellow colleagues and their communities regarding the uncertainty created by Alberta’s Bill 24 and the legal challenge they are in against the government regarding this amendment to the School Act that makes it illegal for the parents to be notified about their child’s involvement in student organizations, including Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs). We look forward to another year of growth opportunities and encouragement as we continue to give life, vitality, rigour, and substance to Christian education in our respective communities that are rooted in a transformational world and life view.

NOTES ON THE 2019-2020 PROPOSED PCCE BUDGET

NOTES ON REVENUE

1.1 Membership Dues If the current system for collecting dues is maintained and if schools have similar attendance figures as they had this year, revenue from membership dues is projected to be around $490,000.

2 TFT Related As many of the American TFT contracts have expired or will be ending this current year, this figure now only includes the Michigan Cohort (final contract to be determined), funds received from CACE as per our Memorandum of Understanding, and funds received from EduDeo as per a Memorandum of Understanding.

NOTES ON EXPENSES

3 TFT Workshops and Expenses Given that the PCCE will have only one contract for TFT in the United States next year, the needs in terms of staffing will be lessened. This contract will be fulfilled internally so costs for staff time appear under Salaries and Benefits. The expense listed is largely for a training session that the PCCE will host for EduDeo as per our Memorandum of Understanding.

4.4 Leadership Development - ELDI Last year only two members from our community applied for and participated in the ELDI program. The cost for participants is $300 and PCCE pays this amount for our members. It is projected that no more than three people would apply for this program.

4.5 PCCE Workshops, Development, Training As per the PCCE Playbook there may be opportunities to partner with sister organizations (i.e. SCSBC) to deliver programs and training to our community. PCCE has in the past subsidized the cost for members to attend these events.

6 Salaries and Benefits This includes salaries and benefits for the Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, Independent Schools Consultant, and Administrative Assistants.

7 Specialized Services This figure has now been included in Salaries and Benefits (Line 6)

8 Travel Expenses This reflects the travel expenses incurred by the Executive Director, Associate Executive Director, and Independent Schools Consultant to meet the needs of schools in our community.

10 Board and Membership Meetings Aligning with the PCCE Playbook, there is a slight increase added to this budget category to reflect the upcoming Task Forces and Think Tanks that will be established and the costs associated with

their meetings.

Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta: Update to PCCE 2019 AGM AISCA membership: Alberta Education indicates that for the 2018-19 school year there are 31439 students in independent schools, and 6968 students in private ECS programs. AISCA seeks to be the voice for all these students, and also advocates for other schools of choice. This includes having 12 associate members within Alberta, and 2 associate members from among the Alberta Accredited International Schools. Government relations: Over the past year AISCA has had multiple meetings with Education Minister Eggen, senior bureaucrats, and with several other MLAs. The focus of these meetings was to ensure that MLAs understand the history and purpose of independent schools in Alberta, and to bring forward areas that are of concern to member schools. AISCA is an active participant in the development and implementation of programs supporting the new Teaching and Leadership standards. The association also spent considerable time on supporting schools with the requirements introduced in Bill 24 and Bill 28. This year, AISCA received a second grant to support schools seeking to work towards reconciliation; this work will continue in the coming year. Educational Stakeholder work: AISCA has representatives on a range of educational committees. These include the Deputy Minister’s System Excellence advisory committee, and a curriculum advisory committee. Work is also being done to support Teacher Growth, Supervision, and Evaluation, school leadership, Teacher certification, and support to individual member schools. AISCA Services; AISCA seeks to provide services to all its members. In the past year this has included:

- New Principals Conference

- Fall and Spring new teacher workshops

- ECS Sharing sessions

- Template policies

- AISCA website

- Teacher Certification program

- Energy Program

- Presentations to local school boards on school specific topics

- Presentations to education students at various universities

Christian schools Canada (CSC) is made up from three regions, each with a mandate for strengthening Christian schools. To further the cause of Christian education at a national level, these organizations partner together in a Canada-wide alliance.

To help facilitate this partnership, CSC has a board comprised of representatives from each of the three regions that meets regularly to collaborate and discuss important issues in Christian education. In addition to these important functions, the board also serves to encourage the leaders within these regions and provides opportunities for these leaders to meet and support each other.

PCCE is represented on this board by Gayle Monsma, Jeremy Horlings, Jay Visser and Sean Alaric.

Of note in this community:

• Ontario has restructured their region from 3 to 2 organizations. Edvance (edvance.ca) with Deani Van Pelt as Executive Director and Edvance (edvance.ca) with Jonathan Schat.

• The board spent considerable time creating a vision and strategic plan for CSC. The work is still in progress, although there is still a strong mandate to build capacity of the leaders in all three regions and also to explore opportunities that would allow for inter-region collaboration.

• The 9th CSC leadership conference was hosted September 26-28, 2018 in Ottawa. The theme of Faithful Presence was Presented well by Jennifer and Sylvia Keesmaat as keynotes as well as the many breakout sessions.

• Planning for the 10th CSC leadership conference is underway. It is scheduled for September 2020 in Vancouver.

Re: Highlighting the work of Christian Schools International

Date: February 2019

Who is Christian Schools International?

Christian Schools International is a global network of Christian schools unified by a biblical worldview

that penetrates all aspects of their schools’ programs and a passion for excellence in all areas of

operation. Our goal is to lead, equip, and unite a dynamic and growing Christian school community that

is fostering a new generation of young people to live God-glorifying lives committed and equipped to

influence cultures with the transformational message that this world belongs to God.

What do we do?

At CSI, we believe that our job is cultivating excellence in Christian education, and we are committed to

uniting, equipping, and supporting Christian schools across the globe, for the honor and glory of God!

We publish two curriculum products (Bible and Science), we train leaders, we offer employee benefit

programs, we consult with schools on numerous areas of organizational design and improvement.

Highlights:

I am pleased to report that over 400 CSI school associations are providing an excellent Christ-centered,

academically rigorous education to a growing population now numbered at over 100,000 students! The

key to the success of these member schools is their focus on the foundational truth of God’s Word, the

deep richness and doctrinal strength of our reformed world view and the quality of our leaders and

faculty as they partner with families to raise up this next generation of Christ following leaders.

• We are seeing a tremendous increase in US and International schools desiring our accreditation,

with new schools seeking accreditation this year. We continue to improve our accreditation process and

look to increase accreditation staff soon. We are pleased that we have created a partnership with

principals from Australia and Christian Educators National who are coming to observe our accreditation

process with the eye of using it to improve their schools in Australia.

• Our leadership programs continue to lead the way in professional development. For inquiring

leaders, our week-long Educational Leadership Development Institute (ELDI) has an enviable “success”

rate, and a waiting list! How do we measure success? In the 13 years ELDI has been in existence, over

70+% of our graduates are now in Christian School administration!

For established administrators we provide the week-long Principal Development Institute. This year,

sixteen participants from the US and Canada gathered together and we talked together about

sustainability, governance, Board development, personal development, leadership, and best practices.

We used Dr. Henry Cloud’s book “Necessary Endings” as a framework to begin the discussion about how

to make and act on difficult decisions that affect our schools and sometimes ourselves.

We had principals coming from Prince Edward Island to Alaska to form a cohort of peers and establish

lasting relationships and a network of “friends”. PDI is an awesome opportunity for Principals to

develop that network of colleagues and peers to carry through their career.

We’re just beginning to work on a series of year long programs with The Center for the Advancement of

Christian Education (CACE) addressing issues pertaining to financial sustainability, Christian Worldview,

and counseling, and other various policy and legal issues. Keep your ears open for more news on that in

the future.

• We held 45+ webinars with hundreds of attendees. Topics ranged from Inclusive education to

sustainability, digital learning to curriculum development, to name a few.

• CSI continues to provide Governance workshops for Boards at an ever-increasing rate. We are still

looking at creating a program with Christian Schools Canada to address together the Board

governance issues with a unique podcast professional development tool for ongoing board

development.

• We just finished our second Bible Symposium in Washington DC, held at the Museum of the Bible.

30 CSI bible teachers from the US and Canada came together to begin to share best practices for

faith integration in the classroom. Our third Science Academy was also a great success and we

appreciate your taking part in that event over the years.

• I’d encourage you to take a look at our new website!

CSI deeply appreciates the relationship we have with our schools and friends in the Prairie. We are

looking at ways to revamp and improve what we provide for you, and we appreciate your feedback!

CSI is committed to establishing that community in a more finite way, providing more opportunity for

schools to work together and network with each other to create a shared community of best practices.

Thanks for your service for the Kingdom! God Bless!

Mission Impossible – without God! Looking back on 2018, staff would often mention how busy we were. Now that we have added up the results, we can say it has been a good year! We have introduced new staff, we have served more clients, and the impact to kingdom causes has grown substantially. Had we come into this year with goals as lofty as our results, we would have said ‘mission impossible’, but when you set your sights on attaining goals that are in keeping with God’s will – the impossible happens. We are only a staff of 11, and yet we have closed 352 new agreements, all of which have a kingdom impact. This resulted in $17 Million dollars flowing as new donations, realized bequests, and fresh deposits. Our field staff preformed 22 Will Clinics and visited 326 clients for the first time in 2018! These visits produced $38 Million in brand new bequest allocations, of which the vast majority are destined for kingdom causes! CSS now has 77 Million under administration allowing us to place __ new mortgages, all to Christian ministries, churches and Christian Schools. On behalf of all our partners, and the charities supported by the funds that flow through CSS, we THANK YOU for your part in this wonderful work.

2018-2019 UPDATE FOR THE PRAIRIE CENTRE FOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION:

THE GLOBAL EDUCATION SUMMIT: This year, EduDeo Ministries hosted our first ever Global Education

Summit. From September 16 – 29, 2018, 18 key leaders from 8 EduDeo partners came together in

Canada to participate. Our partners visited Christian schools across Canada; met with board members,

staff, and friends of EduDeo; and attended the Christian Schools Canada conference in Ottawa, Ontario.

Yadira, a principal in Belize, shared these reflections with us: “As a young leader, I have found that this

[Summit] has challenged me to rethink and evaluate what I have been doing in my school. It has

challenged me and redirected me to remember our main purpose in education – transformation of the

whole life.”

WALKING TOGETHER: If you want to improve a child’s education, start with their leaders. This idea is key

to our Walking Together program. From Nicaragua to Burkina Faso, EduDeo has been blessed to

facilitate workshops, conferences, and trainings with leaders, principals, and teachers. We are grateful

for the Prairie Centre for Christian Education’s partnership with EduDeo in Zambia, and for schools who

have willingly shared their exceptional leaders with us. For more information on how to be involved in

this program, contact Elco Vandergrift at [email protected].

PRAYERS: In the last year, political tensions in Nicaragua and Haiti have caused our work to be paused or

lessened in these countries. Please join with us in prayer as we continue to pray for our brothers and

sisters in these countries – pray for positive responses to the crises and protests from the governments,

for the families of those who have lost their lives, and for principals, teachers, and students to be able to

attend their schools.

We are grateful for the continued partnership we have with PCCE schools – in particularly, we give

thanks for your continued support and prayers in our ministry. Thank you!

Dr. Hank Bestman – Vice President Academic and Research

Thank you for the opportunity to submit a brief update about The King’s University.

• The Winter term enrolment in the 2018/19 academic year reached a total of 812 students.

The combined total of number of course credits students are taking in the 2018/19

academic year is 21,660, which is only slightly below the number the budget was based

on.

• The spring graduation convocation will be held on Saturday May 4, 2019. We expect

about 170 students to graduate. The convocation speaker is Dr. Steven Timmermans,

Executive Director of the Christian Reformed Church in North America.

• The Administration is presenting a balanced budget for the 2019/20 academic year to the

Board of Governors, scheduled to meet on March 29 and 30, 2019. The budget includes a

significant investment in software to enhance our communication with prospective

students.

• The search for a new Vice President Academic and Research is in full swing.

• We expect to hear about the outcome of the university’s two nominations for Canada

Research Chairs some time in April 2019. If successful it will mean the university has

three federally founded Tier II Canada Research Chairs. A few months ago another Tier

II Canada Research Chair was allocated to the university. We are in the process of

nominating a suitable applicant.
