AP Human Geography Williams
Summer 2019
2019-2020 AP Human Geography Summer Assignments
Thank you for choosing to be a part of AP Human Geography for the 2019-2020 school year. The curriculum for this
two-semester course consists of topics drawn from seven interrelated units of study outlined in the AP Human
Geography Course Description published by the College Board.
Upon of entering an AP class it is important have a certain level of background knowledge and skills. The following
tasks will start you on your journey toward success this year. Both assignments are due the first day of school.
Assignment I: Outline Maps
Directions: Label the world outline maps with the features listed below each map to build an understanding of both
the political and physical geography among the various world regions. Coloring each map is optional (except for
maps 13 and 14).
Map 1 – Map Basics Map 2 – Land Features
Map 3 – Rivers and Lakes Map 4 – Seas, Gulfs, and other Major Water Features
Map 5 – North America and the Caribbean Map 6 – South America
Map 7 – Europe Map 8 – Sub-Saharan Africa
Map 9 – North Africa & the Middle East Map 10 – E Asia, C Asia, S Asia, and SE Asia
Map 11 – Central and South Asia Map 12 – Oceania
Maps 13 – World Regions A Big Picture Maps 14 –World Regions A Closer Look
Each map has a list of countries, cities and/or regions to label. The list and corresponding numbers will serve as the
key. Label each element with the correct number in the correct location. Countries are listed in regular font and cities
are listed in italics.
Over the course of the year there will be series of map quizzes, so it will be important for you to keep your map
packet for review purposes. It is essential that you work throughout the year to maintain a mental map of the world
and the placement of states (countries), cities and natural phenomena.
Studying for map quizzes requires time and preparation. Prior to each map quiz I will hand out blank maps to assist in
your preparation. The first step is to find each feature and label blank outline maps. Taking the time to color the maps
is also an effective way to retain the necessary information.
