It seems eons ago that we were running the largest summer camp in DVSA’s history, watching registrations climb while growing the scope of our program to meet identified needs from our students and community.

We had a record-breaking fall for registrations, all the more exciting given it all launched with our Little Black Frame fundraiser selling out in a matter of 5 hours. The free family open houses just kept getting larger and more popular. Our community partnerships were expanding to include more social service organizations and we were particularly delighted when our Eva Rothwell Centre after school art program received some much-needed funding so it could be stabilized and confirmed. In January, Winterblooms, broke all attendance records in its fifth year. 2019-20 appeared to be a great year, on track as one to be remembered.

Little did we know.

We shuttered on March 13th, not knowing when we would be back, but determined we would be ready to reopen, pandemic or not, as soon as it was safe to do so. For three months, staff worked from home, day-by-day

watching to see what would be next in terms of cancellations and postponements. And in the process, they began working steadily through the requirements to have a school open if not for the Annual Art Auction, then for the Spring term, and if not for the Spring term, then for the summer camp.

During this period, new initiatives emerged, starting with a series of “Artists’ Care Packages”, curated resources that encompassed everything from museum visits and how-to videos to children’s activities and artist profiles. If people could stay home and have enriching experiences, such as they were used to at DVSA, it might make the sequestering a little easier. We would learn these packages were shared internationally as creatives of all ages engaged with the materials.

We put programs online for adults and children. We started with pop-up auctions to see what moving our annual fundraiser would entail and if these would be supported. We worked to clean and reset the studios and public spaces so students could return. And it worked.

Message From The Executive Director and Chair of the Board of Governors

Page 3: 2019 – 2020 Annual Report - DVSA

Course registrations continued, artworks sold and in early June we had defined standards under which we could re-open.

It would be three months before we were back in the building and ready for a much-diminished summer art camp program with no adults and no 4-6-year-olds. Re-opening was possible with the help of many supporters who responded generously to our emergency fundraising campaign, providing support and ensuring we could meet our overhead. In the meantime, we got on with applying for and receiving a small business loan and the federal payroll subsidy.

Without the support of the community, this simply would not have been possible.

Claire Loughheed Executive Director

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all our supporters: the many students who donated their course fees, the many donors who stepped up with funds when we needed them most. This also includes our hard-working staff team and our board members who rolled up their sleeves and set about learning about the operations in the midst of a pandemic to understand what would get the school safely re-opened.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a community–an extended community at that–to ensure the success of an art school. Thank you for being a part of our journey and helping ensure the lights are on, the doors are open, and the learning continues.

In The Studios

The artwork produced by students in our classes, workshops and children & teen art camps continued to inspire and impress. The Greater Hamilton community once more responded to our efforts to provide accessible and high-quality art education and we were thrilled to witness the ongoing creative growth by our artists.

The Summer and Fall terms brought a record number of registrations for art classes, with this growth projected to continue had business operations not been disrupted in March by the COVID-19 pandemic. Even when the school was closed during the provincial lockdown, our students continued to make art at home, using digital technology to stay in touch with instructors and fellow artists in an effort to remain inspired and motivated – a clear indication of the commitment that

forms the foundation of our strong DVSA community.

Representations of new student work could be seen during our Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night, Dundas Winterblooms, Advanced Studio exhibitions and our Pop-Up Online Art Auctions. Student artwork posted to our social media channels generated enthusiastic responses and positive encouragement from fellow artists, regionally and even internationally. In undertaking the pivot to work and create online, instructors and students are to be congratulated for their efforts.     COVID-19 Closure    The mandatory closure of DVSA commencing on March 16/2020 caused significant disruption, forcing the cancellation of our March Break Art Camps and the Spring term, along with the postponement of April’s 50th Annual Art Auction. With the safety of our students, faculty and staff of paramount concern, the facility was closed and cleaned, and the entire administrative team moved to working off-site.    The loss of classes and events put the school in serious financial jeopardy. We are deeply grateful for the support of our students and the community for stepping forward and helping, by any means possible, to ensure the school’s survival and sustainability. The uncertainty created by the disruption to operations conversely provided a great opportunity

Events

for change and growth of the business model, forcing us to pivot, innovate and explore alternative approaches for continuing to fulfill the school’s mission.

Online Classes   We believe an in-studio experience is the best environment for providing art instruction. However, with the school forced to close, we recognized a desire by students to continue receiving weekly art instruction and a number of faculty members willing to blaze a trail forward and develop a practical format for offering online classes. After some experimentation and coordination, six online classes were successfully launched during the spring term. Students enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with fellow artists, create together (albeit from home) and receive guidance from our instructors. We continue to experiment with the online class format, aiming to strike a balance between providing real value in a virtual environment while supporting and advocating for the superior experience of an in-person, in-studio art education.

Art Care Packages   Recognizing our student body was stuck at home and with many struggling to remain motivated and connected during the provincial lockdown, DVSA developed a series of digital “Art Care Packages.” Delivered via email, the packages were designed to provide a curated array of digital resources to inspire and delight, amuse and reassure our community that what they valued culturally was alive and well and “we are all in this together.”

Four packages were created and sent bi-weekly over the course of the spring

term. The response was extremely enthusiastic, with the digital packages being shared extensively beyond the DVSA community, generating significant goodwill for the school and continuing our mission of building community through the visual arts.

Pop-Up Online Art Auctions   With the postponement of our 50th Annual Art Auction, the ensuing disappointment led us to experiment with the notion of offering an online alternative. The first DVSA Pop-Up Online Art Auction in April consisted of just five artworks and proved to be so popular we moved forward with more pop-up auction events, increasing the number of pieces each time and consequently, the level of excitement. Artists were thrilled to see their work online, watch bids being placed and gain exposure to a wider audience. Not only did these Pop-Up's bring in much needed revenue for the school, but they also provided financial support for the region’s working artists. The online format increased DVSA’s profile and brought new art patrons into our auction fold.

In the end, seven Pop-Up Auctions were held throughout the spring and into the summer months. The new format proved so successful, it delivered the confidence

and knowledge required to offer a modified online version of our Art Auction later in September, this time featuring over 1,000 artworks. This, too, was a great success.

Making Art Accessible – DVSA Outreach Initiatives

At DVSA, we believe developing creativity and creative thinking is integral to positive personal growth. In 2019-2020, we continued to place an emphasis on providing specialized programming for participants of all ages and backgrounds where opportunities to engage in hands-on art experiences are not always accessible. Below is a summary of our outreach initiatives.   Continuing Ties with Eva Rothwell DVSA resumed its partnership with Eva Rothwell Centre to run after school art programs for young artists, ages 4-10.  Located in north-east Hamilton, this busy community centre provides a range of programs for the underserved families in the neighbourhood, including a food and clothing bank, job training and after school snack and tutoring programs.

Funded in part by the Hamilton Community Foundation, Bertram Foundation and the CIBC Wood Gundy Burlington, the after-school art programs are an opportunity for DVSA to bring art education to children living in the neighbourhood and engage them in projects that develop creative literacy. The art workshops, run by DVSA instructor, Sandra Greenblatt, challenged the children with projects that involved drawing, painting and sculpture.

Good Neighbours New this year, DVSA extended its community art experience program and partnered with the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre to offer eight weeks of art workshops to children ranging in ages 5-12 at N2N’s Hamilton Mountain location. Coordinated by DVSA instructor, Sandra Greenblatt, the programs engaged the children in drawing, painting and sculpture projects and took place prior to the community family dinners.

Neighbour to Neighbour Centre of  Hamilton offers an emergency food bank, educational and family supports

and a Community Food Centre, using preventative measures and strategies to alleviate the burden of poverty.

Funded by The HG Bertram Foundation, this creative partnership is expected to resume when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.     Growing The Artist Connection  Our four travelling Artists' Connection programs – AC3, 4, 5 & 6 – were in high demand this year with the full roster booked throughout 2019-20. This year,  DVSA was only able to offer the programs to 24 schools due to COVID-19 restrictions. Under normal circumstances, this program would visit 36 schools in the Hamilton-Wentworth and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Boards and offer over 37,800 students in Grades JK-12 the opportunity to participate in quality visual arts programming.

Over the past 15 years, over 261 schools have participated in DVSA’s Artist Connection program, engaging 252,000 students in visual arts education.

DVSA’s Artists’ Connection Programs consist of an art exhibition and artist talks and workshops, designed to give students the opportunity to participate in visual art exhibitions and art workshops that share an artist’s work and artistic practice.

The program continues to grow – Artists’ Connection 7 which focusses on the theme of self identity is currently in development.

Funding for the Artists’ Connection Programs was provided by Hamilton Community Foundation, The Edith H. Turner Foundation Fund, The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, OTIP Community Fund and the Henry White Kinnear Foundation    Aging Artfully  Now in its fourth year, our Aging Artfully outreach program expanded its offerings and continued to engage the senior community in visual art activities taught by professional artists. The goal is to promote accessibility to the visual arts while offering opportunities for seniors to express their individual creativity. DVSA continued its offerings at St. Joseph’s Villa (for both the Residents and Day Program) and Wentworth Lodge and added programs at Wesley Urban Ministries and St. Matthew’s House.

Funding for Aging Artfully was generously provided by The John & Esther Marshall Memorial Fund and the Senior Fund at the Hamilton Community Foundation.

Foster the Ability  With combined funding from The Martin Family Foundation and Everald Hambro Fund at Hamilton Community Foundation, Greygates Foundation, and in partnership with the Children`s Aid Society of Hamilton (CAS) and Catholic Children`s Aid Society of Hamilton (CCAS), DVSA was able to offer a series of free visual art workshops, weekly classes and bursaries for youth who are part of the Foster and Kin Family Program at CAS and CCAS. This was another unique opportunity for families supported by these social service agencies to explore and make art together – and in the process, promote visual arts in the community and emphasize the importance of individual creativity for everyone.

Family Art Open Houses  Designed for art lovers and creatives of all ages, DVSA welcomed hundreds of children and parents into the studios for our free Family Art Day Open Houses. Featuring art activities based on the themes of Halloween, the winter holidays

and Valentine’s Day, these afternoons were all about family art making and having fun as participants created alongside one another in a variety of disciplines from painting to pottery. Funding for this project was generously provided by the Dougher Community Fund at Hamilton Community Foundation, CIBC Wood Gundy Burlington, Y108 Children’s Fund and Walmart Ancaster.

Says Max age 8 and a Hallowbaloo regular, “It’s so much spooky fun! I come with my family and we go to all the studios. My favourite is making jack o’ lantern pottery!”

Winterblooms Celebrates Its 5th Anniversary

Dundas Valley School of Art, Carnegie Gallery, Mohawk College Continuing Education and Dundas Museum & Archives continued their strong community collaboration by joining forces for a 5th edition of Winterblooms.

“Five years in and the demand for this event just keeps growing,” said our Executive Director, Claire Loughheed. “Friends tell friends how much fun this exhibition is and make an outing of it. It’s truly an original event and it brings a much welcome burst of colour mid-winter.”

Held in January, the event featured inspired new art and artifacts and a team of florists ready to show off their creativity. This year’s exhibits once again drew hundreds of art and floral lovers to all three Dundas locations. The four day event features free exhibitions of original artworks and precious museum artifacts, accompanied by fresh floral arrangements that take their inspiration from their paired work of art.

Attendance continues to grow for this community building event, bringing new visitors into all three locations.

Thank you to Edna Miller Flowers for their ongoing support.

It’s the end of an era – Maria Ferretti-Perrins closed her Art Shop at DVSA at the end of January, desiring more time to focus on her art practice and family. Many long-time customers dropped by in the final days to reminisce and wish her well with her artistic adventures. It won't be the same without her shop, but we're just glad to know Maria will still be in the school to keep us on our toes...

Hosted in November, the 5th edition of our Little Black Frame Mystery Art Night sold out, ironically, in just 5 hours as art lovers across the city clamoured to be part of the evening’s fun. There were more outstanding pieces from our participating artists, and most importantly, much needed funds raised to support DVSA programs.

The Little Black Frame event is a unique twist on the art lottery. Featuring over 175 stunning art pieces showcased in a little black frame, each artwork is created by an established or emerging local artist. When attendees hear their ticket number drawn, they can choose a favourite piece – not knowing who made the masterpiece until it’s in their hands. With music, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres to add to the atmosphere, Little Black Frame is Hamilton’s hottest art party and a great showcase for our DVSA and local artists.

For the fifth straight year, we exceeded our expectations, grossing $35,127 and $10,500 in kind for a total gross of $45,627.

The net income for the event was $27,883 with attendance figures estimated at over 375 people.

Event sponsors at different levels offset costs with sponsorship opportunities ranging from $250 to $5,000. There were 180 works of art produced by the 150 artists committed to supporting this event and consisting of local artists, school faculty and up and coming student artists.

2019-20 Faculty

A generous capital grant from Ontario Trillium Foundation brought some major changes to our photo media lab, including the purchase of 12 new iMacs and much needed software upgrades.
