WelcomeIt gives me great pleasure to present our Annual Review for 2018/19 which

provides a round-up of the many successes of our students, and the College as a whole, during the last academic year.

Throughout the year we continued to focus on improving quality and the overall attainment of our learners. In the summer of 2019 we were pleased to announce an overall pass rate of 99% for A-levels and an A*-C success rate of 82% (six percentage points above the national comparator). We saw similar successes in vocational courses with 35% of students achieving D*/D grades, equivalent to A*/A grades at A-level. It gave us great pleasure to see our first student for a number of years progress to Oxbridge while engineering student Hywel Jackson became the only student in the UK to secure an apprenticeship with Mercedes F1. These are just two out of many student successes throughout the year.

In Work-based Learning we are expecting results for both the College and its B-wbl consortium to be strong and above the last available national comparator. These results are a testament to the hard work of staff in all areas of College activity. During 2019, the College was also awarded a £7.4 million capital development funding envelope from Welsh Government’s 21st Century Band B Fund, for investing into the main campus site and plans are in place to further develop the courtyard area.

I would like to express my personal gratitude to an outstanding academic staff and business support team, whose commitment and dedication ensures that all our students have the best possible learning experience here at Pembrokeshire College. As a College, we are indeed privileged to have such a strong staff team and governing body and I thank them all for their contributions.

O U R D E D I C AT E DE M P LOY E E S Our mission: “To inspire excellence, empower individuals and develop the future workforce.”

Our dedicated team of lecturers, tutors and business support staff are what make the College such a great place to work and to study.

Each year this dedicated team go above and beyond to ensure that our mission is fulfilled and that each learner is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Ready for Work. We are committed to preparing our learners for the workplace. This commitment is backed by the Employment Bureau which, during 2018/19, ensured over 600 learners accessed work placements and placed over 200 learners into part-time and full-time employment.

Fit & Healthy. During the summer term 2019, work started on IMPACT, a programme of activities and support designed to help learners to build more skills and resilience across five main areas: Getting Active | Healthy Lifestyle | Anxiety & Resilience | Healthy Relationships | Communication & Life Skills. IMPACT will be rolled out to all learners during 2019/20.

Community Minded. Across the curriculum, learners have been aided by their tutors and lecturers to take part in community projects aimed at improving the local environment and the lives of people who live in rural communities across the county. Projects have included clearing pathways and providing health and wellbeing treatments to community groups.

Full of Ideas. In a county dominated by micro-businesses, self-employment is a real option. We recognise this and encourage all learners to develop entrepreneurial skills and innovative thinking. During 2018/19, 1,720 learners engaged in enterprise sessions, 27 received support to start a business and four launched their own businesses.

PUTTING OUR LEARNERS FIRST...

O U R E S TAT E A N D FA C I L IT I E S

Over the last five years the College has invested approximately £11 million in capital schemes and continues to invest a high level of expenditure in maintenance programmes to provide an environment conducive to learning.

PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT Throughout 2018/19 the environment was one of our top priorities with environmental committees being formed and action being taken to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in the College.

Within the curriculum, the importance of the environment, sustainable development and global citizenship remained important themes with our learners contributing to the wider environment in many ways, from direct project assistance to fundraising.

On campus, Independent Living Skills learners planted borders around the College and saved over 20,000 crisp packets from going to landfill as part of the Walkers Crisp Packets Recycling Scheme. Learners are using the money they receive from the scheme to buy gardening tools and equipment.

Our unique set of facilities is why so many young people choose to study with us each year; whether their interest lies in fashion or electronics, catering or welding, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer our learners some of the best facilities of any college in Wales across a broad range of employment sectors.

Capital Investment. Our campus is what sets us apart; being able to offer our learners industry standard workshops, studios and training environments in which to train. During 2018/19 we invested £774,000 into maintaining our campus for the benefit of our learners.

Investing in IT. During the 2017 inspection the College was proud to be recognised by Estyn for the quality of it’s IT infrastructure. To maintain the facilities available to learners, during 2018/19, the College invested £394,000 into IT equipment.

Going Green. The College is committed to going green and reducing its carbon footprint. Since November 2018 the College has procured all of its energy for the main campus from a renewable energy source.

Recycling. The College set itself a target to recycle 70% of the waste it generated by 2014 and to maintain this every year. In 2018/19 74% of waste was recycled.
