President’s Report – Respectfully submitted by Wilma Oliver
I hope you all are enjoying the summer. Mother nature has been good to us. July has been a very busy month here at the Branch. The restructuring committee has met three times. There is not a lot to report yet, but there is movement. We now have permission from Provincial Command to put our property up for sale, but as yet have not found suitable accommodations for the Branch. More on this front as it happens. On Saturday the 7th, the very successful Annual Car show and BBQ kicked off a very busy July. The fundraiser BBQ, an initiative of Peter DiSisto and Metro Churchill Plaza, was quite a success and we want to thank them again for this effort to raise funds for the Branch.I also want to thank Marg and Joe Swystun, Carol Piper, Keith Piper, Helen Stewart, and Debbie Rouleau for spending their Saturday helping out at Churchill Plaza. Helen and Debbie had just returned from participating in the Goulais River Community Day Parade that same daywhere our band and colour party were again a welcome presence. Hats off to you all!!!

Your Legion Branch played a small part in a wonderful day of fishing. The Algoma Fish and Game club held their first “Take a Vet Fishing”. It was a really great day for the Veterans and organizers alike. We held a pasta supper for them at days end. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie and joy they all had experienced. They are already making plans for next year. (There is a mini-album available in the lounge for those wishing to see the fun). More information below.Last Saturday, the Branch put together a float for the Community day Parade and thanks go to Norm Hopkins, Art Denning, Bill Stewart and Don Oliver for getting this project off the ground.
Our Float – a great picture of our President Wilma J. Oliver and L.A. President Gail Carter-Hill joined by Veterans Norm Hopkins (right 2nd
row) Ray Smith (left 2nd row) Behind Norm is Veteran Jordan Ambeault and to his right Veteran Laurie MacKenzie. Also on the float were: Veteran Tammy Guay, Comrades Norma and Norm Cardiff.
Carrying our banner “Pride in our Past – Faith in our Future” were 2310 Army Cadets: Cpl.
3
Wayatt Montpetit, Sgt. Jerik Lott (Herbert), Cpl Michael Chevrierm Oreston Morrar, and BDR Julian Wilson. Also a huge thank-you to the Algoma Veteran Association members who were with us. Tammy Guay was on the float, President AVA Frank Iezzi, with John Dias and Troy Bailey who passed out water to our marchers. Also in the parade was the float for the Veterans Commemorative Monument. Buy a brick ($150) to honour those serving or who have served, or simply make a donation. You may contact Clyde Healey or Bill Bennett through the office for more information. 705-945-8721
Saturday the 28th, the Branch held a large yard sale outside which was also very successful. All said and done, a busy July!
Our condolences to Mary Anne Martin on the loss of her son Gordon this month. A celebration of life was held at the Branch on Monday July 30th.

We still have another month of summer to enjoy. Please consider visiting the Branch with your friends for a cool one.

The July 14th Fish for a Vet function – what an amazing day!!
Below is a picture of most of the fishermen with their catch. Thank-you Marnee for sending this along.
Once the thick fog rolled off all 40+ fishermen caught something. Joe and Marnee Giuliani from Algoma Fish and Game need to be commended for their excellent organizational skills. Don’t they look like a happy bunch?
5
This picture is of one of our members – 90 year old Bill Huckson – who stayed all day and was rewarded with his catch. Nobody has ever seen Bill smile like that before.
July 14th – Goulais River Community Days – the Colour Party and Branch were well represented at this parade. It
was an honour to march for such a great community event. I was Absent With Leave for family gatherings, but Ron Rouleau was a great substitute. The band played a concert under the rink roof – a real hit.
Givver, givver Goulais River!
6
Sgt@Arms – The colour party marched without a band this year at the Community Day Parade. It was difficult, but we made it. Here’s hoping band membership grows so it doesn’t happen again.
If there is anyone out there interested in and willing to march with the colour party this season, please contact myself (Ernie) at the office 705-945-8721.
2 nd V-P/Museum/Service Officer Reports Respectfully submitted by Ron Rouleau
I am away on holiday in Ireland with Debbie, but this came to our attention and thought it was important.UNMARKED GRAVE PROGRAM (The Last Post Fund)
‘No Veteran should lie in an unmarked grave. The Last Post Fund’s Unmarked Grave Program ensures that all Veterans are properly commemorated by providing military-style grave marking when no other marking is in place. The Program is available to all those who served for the Canadian Forces (buried in Canada and around the world) who have been without permanent grave marking for five years or more. Allied Veterans who are buried in Canada may also be assisted under the Program.Your Help is NeededWe are appealing to members of the Royal Canadian Legion to help us research and identify unmarked graves. Please visit your local cemetery to let them know
7
about the Unmarked Grave Proram and ask if they are are of any Veteran who lies in an unmarked grave. Once informed, the Last Post Fund will help to research service particulars and arrange for military-style grave marking at no cost to the family, municipality or cemetery.’For more information, visit: www.lastpostfund.ca or call 1-800-465-7113

If you hear of anyone, please let me know. If you know of anyone in the nursing homes or hospital who may qualify for a visit, please let me know. Thanks. The nursing homes have called and their Remembrance Day services are booked.
Seniors – Monday Carpet Bowling will continue throughout the summer, unless the hall is rented or there’s a statutory holiday.
Plans are underway for the Harvest Moon and Christmas Dinner dances. The dinner dances are open to all. These dinner dances are fundraisers for the Branch. The bands hired for the dances are paid through the Lottery Accounts, that’s why they are scheduled as a Seniors’ event. The dinner portion is paid for through the sale of tickets; decorations and door prizes are paid by the Seniors’ slush fund. These dinner dances are set so that they do not cost money except for overhead expenses, so please think about coming out to the dinner dances and help raise funds for the Branch.

It isn’t enough just to join – we need you to help with some of our endeavours. If you are willing to give a few hours/week or per month that would be a tremendous burden off the shoulders of your Executive – come on in and offer your services. Or, come in and enjoy a cold beverage, some chit-chat, and a few laughs. Remember, September brings the Early Bird Campaign. I know some of you have had troubled either getting your cards or something is ‘off’ with them and we have had to get new ones, but this is a new system, and we need to work together to make it successful.Have your celebrations here (diaper parties, stag & doe, wedding, celebration of life). You will find the food delicious and the camaraderie outstanding. The Branch yard sale was on Saturday July 28th. We had over 16 tables and spots sold and everything from golf to Army Surplus. We also had muffins and coffee for sale. Since everything was donated to us, our profit for the day was over $500.Thank-you so much to those who donated items for our table and to those vendors for supporting us. Many thanks to President Wilma and Comrades Don Oliver, and Pat Vardy for their help.
Also need to thank Gary our caretaker for bringing all those tables downstairs and for Pat taking them back up. Many hands make less work.
***LET’S GET SAUCED***

One of our new members, Margaret Ann Pettalia has agreed to hold a preserving/canning night here at the Branch. We will make her famous ‘steak sauce’ that can be used on any meat, eggs, quiche, or pasta. There is a sample in the office, if you’d like to try it out first. If you would like to learn how to make this, or if you would just like a fun night out – check out the poster attached. We are limited to space in the kitchen and if this is popular enough, we will host two events. We will also look into the possibility of making hot, pickled vegetables. Let us know!! Be safe, and we will see you back here September 5th., 2018.
Track & Field and Cadet Report – Respectfully submitted by Pierre Breckenridge
Cadets – The Sr. Corps are still on stand down for the summer so very little to report.
2310 Army Cadet Corps was able to supply 5 cadets to support the Legion’s participation in this year’s community day parade. They carried the banner and assisted with other routine duties. Thank-you.
The three local Sr. Corps had their two-week course cadets return home from training this past Saturday July 21st. From the smiles on their faces and hugs to the family it is fair to say they were missed, but enjoyed their training.

We are in the planning phase for our Small Business Christmas Party.
If you know any small business who would like to join us for this, we would be most appreciative. It will be Saturday November 24th and the menu has been planned but there are details to work out and we will get them out to everyone as soon as possible.
As we all know, the best advertising is ‘word of mouth’ – please help us promote the events in the Dispatch by telling your friends and family.
Let your people know about upcoming events so they can come and participate, and also let them know what a good time you’ve had after being at a Legion dance, pancake breakfast, pasta supper, Friday night Karaoke.
For course you could play pool or darts. Our Legion can only help support our veterans if we can bring in income from these fun activities.
Do you live in an apartment building? If your landlord allows posting information on a community bulletin board in your building, we would appreciate being able to put posters up regarding upcoming Legion events. We would be willing to e-mail you a poster, if you can post it for us. Please e-mail us at [email protected] if you can participate in this.
LAST POST – WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Band and Colour Party
The Royal Canadian Legion Band is looking for band members. Horns, drums, bells, cymbals – if you can play any of these instruments, please contact Debbie Rouleau through the Branch. 705-945-8721We would also like to see more people march with the Colour Party at special events like our parades. NUTS - A doctor in an asylum decided to take his clients to a baseball game.
16
For weeks in advance, he coached his nutty patients to respond to his commands.
When the day of the game arrived, everything seemed to be going well. As the national anthem started, the doctor yelled: “Up Nuts!” And the group complied by standing up.After the anthem he yelled: “Down Nuts!: and they all sat. After a home run, he yelled: “Cheer nuts!” and they all broke into applause and cheers.Thinking things were going very well, he decided to go get a beer and a hot dog, leaving his assistant in charge. When he returned, there was a riot in progress. Finding his assisted, he asked what happened. The assistant replied: “Well……….everything was fine until some vendor walked by and yelled “Peanuts”.
Joke was copied from the WAWA flyer.
