SHELTON JOINS 2018 BLUE DEVILSSetter/outside hitter Andie Shelton joined the 2018 Blue Devil roster

as a graduate student transfer from the University of Pacifi c with one

year of eligibilty remaining. After earning 2014 West Coast Conference

Freshman Team honors, Shelton did not see game action during the 2015

season. She returned to the fl oor as a redshirt sophomore in 2016 and

was the Tigers’ best setter, averaging a team-best 7.48 assists per set.

As one of only two two-position players in the WCC in 2017, Shelton

garnered All-WCC Honorable Mentions accolades. In addition to seeing

time at setter, Shelton also saw action at outside hitter and averaged

5.12 assists, 2.73 digs, 2.30 kills and 0.82 blocks per set in conference

play while also totaling 21 service aces.

OWOKONIRAN NAMED TOU.S. JUNIOR NATIONALVOLLEYBALL TEAMBlue Devil freshman Ade Owokoniran was named to the 12-member U.S.

Women’s Junior National Team that captured the NORCECA Women’s

U20 Continental Championship this past June in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

With a championship game victory over the Dominican Republic, the

U.S. also earned qualifi cation into the 2019 FIVB Women’s U20 World

Championship. The Americans fi nished the tournament with a 5-0

record. Team USA has now won the biennial NORCECA Women’s U20

Championship seven times out of 11 tournaments. Owokoniran was one

of two players on the roster from ACC schools, joining North Carolina’s

Destiny Cox. Other programs represented included Long Beach State,

Oregon, Auburn, Nebraska, Stanford, Texas and Southern California.

BALANCED OFFENSEDuke ran a 6-2 system in 2017 and ranked fourth in the ACC in

assists per set (12.89) and fi fth in kills per set (13.60). Duke was the

only school to rank in the top fi ve in the ACC in kills per set without

an individual hitter in the league’s top 10 in kills. The Blue Devils are

without 2017 kills leader Cadie Bates, who turned in a career year

her senior season. But Duke does return sophomore outside hitter

and 2017 ACC All-Freshman Team selection Payton Schwantz. Ju-

nior rightside hitter Samantha Amos -- a 2016 ACC All-Freshman

Team pick -- totaled 268 kills on a .252 hitting percentage a year

ago, totaling 10 matches of 10-plus kills. Senior Jessi Bartholomew

fi lled a key spot at rightside hitter, recording eight-straight matches

of 10 or more kills from October 15 - November 8. Overall, seven

Blue Devils put down 100 or more kills in 2017, while four surpassed

the 200-kill threshold.

NAGEL ANNOUNCES STAFFCHANGESThis summer, head coach Jolene Nagel made two staff changes, start-

ing with the promotion of Fred Chao to associate head coach. Chao

joined the Blue Devil coaching staff in March 2017 as an assistant

coach with responsibilities including student-athlete development,

practice planning, scouting, game analysis and recruiting. In Chao’s

fi rst season at Duke, four newcomers joined a corps of nine returning

letterwinners to lead the Blue Devils to a 19-12 (11-9 ACC) campaign in

2017. Senior outside hitter Cadie Bates secured All-ACC honors, while

freshmen Payton Schwantz and Summer Brown were both tabbed to

the All-ACC Freshman Team. Chao’s resume includes over 20 years of

coaching experience. He served as the head men’s volleyball coach at

George Mason (1998-2015) while simultaneously working as an assistant

coach with the Patriots’ women’s volleyball team (1998-2004). Prior to

joining the Blue Devils, Chao spent two seasons as an assistant coach

at Virginia Tech. Chao’s promotion is the second Blue Devil coaching

staff change this offseason. After longtime assistant coach Cristina

Robertson accepted the head coaching job at UMBC, Nagel brought

on Tara Hittle from Portland State in April to complete Duke’s staff

for the 2018 season. Hittle serves as an assistant coach, aiding in all

aspects of the program including recruiting, practice planning, match

preparation, scheduling and team travel. A former NCAA Division I

student-athlete and professional volleyball player, Hittle also brings

ample experience as a both a coach and a recruiter. She spent the past

season as an assistant coach at Portland State, helping the Vikings to

their fi rst 20-win season since 2013 while helping guide four Vikings to

All-Big Sky Conference honors.
