SCOUTING AIR FORCE Air Force was picked to win the Southern Conference title in a vote of the league’s eight coaches. The Falcons nabbed eight first-place votes and Chris Walsch, Andrew Tien and Brandon Jones all were voted to the preseason all-SoCon team. Walsch also was named a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse after his 64-point sophomore campaign. Air Force returns six starters, including its top scorer and top defenseman, and 39 letterwinners from last year’s squad. The Falcons also welcome back their faceoff specialist, but had to replace goaltender Doug Gouchoe. SoCon Rookie of the Year Brandon Jones is back to anchor the defense after posting 43 ground balls and 28 caused turnovers as a freshman. Overall, the Falcons welcome back three of their top four scorers and two of their top three defensemen in the stats from 2016.

HOME SWEET HOME FOR THE BLUE DEVILS Duke enters 2017 with a one-game home win streak. The Blue Devils went 5-3 in Durham last season and are 89-15 all-time at home under Danowski.

DUKE WELCOMES HERALDED ROOKIE CLASS Inside Lacrosse tabbed Duke’s rookie class as the best in the nation heading into 2017. The group features six players ranked in the top 36 of Inside Lacrosse’s Power 100 list. Attackman Joey Manown, after a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy, headlines the group at No. 7, while midfielders Reilly Walsh (Brunswick) and Terry Lindsay (Georgetown Prep) rounded out Duke in the top 15 at Nos. 12 and 13, respectively. Kevin Quigley (Ridge) was No. 17 and defenseman JT Giles-Harris (St. Joseph’s [N.J.]) was 25th. Brian Smyth (Westminster School), a faceoff specialist, was the final Blue Devil in the rankings at No. 36. Walsh, Smyth and Giles-Harris suited up for the North Team and Quigley wore the South Team jersey at the 2016 Under Armour All-America game.

NCAA ACTIVE LEADERS HEADING INTO 2017 A host of Blue Devils head into the 2017 season among the active leaders in points, faceoffs and goals, etc. Justin Guterding will begin his junior season fifth in points per game (3.81), 10th in career points (141), eighth in goals (95) and sixth in goals per game (2.57). Jack Bruckner is 13th among active players in career points (132) and seventh in goals (99). Kyle Rowe will begin his final season as the nation’s leader in ground balls (376), third in ground balls per game (8.00), second in faceoffs won (605), fifth in faceoff win percentage (.628) and fourth in faceoffs attempted (963).

SMITH, LINDSAY WIN GOLD Duke midfielders Brad Smith and Terry Lindsay helped lead the United States U19 squad to the FIL U19 World Championship this past summer. Smith played much of the tournament on the first midfield line, while Lindsay was crucial as a defensive midfielder. They are the latest Blue Devils to win gold with Team USA.

DANOWSKI PART OF 350-WIN CLUB With a 16-6 win over Mercer in 2015, John Danowski became the fourth lacrosse coach across all three divisions to win at least 350 games. He enters 2017 ranked third among all active coaches in career victories and tops among Division I leaders.

Coach, School W L 1. Jim Berkman, Salisbury 489 572. Hank Janczyk, Gettysburg 423 1333. John Danowski, Duke 370 1854. Bill Tierney, Denver 368 121

ETHAN POWLEY RETURNS TO LSM Senior captain Ethan Powley will return to his natural long stick middie position in 2017. The veteran pole is Duke’s top returning takeaway artist and a ground ball leader. He posted a career-best 21 caused turnovers and was third among defensive players with 36 ground balls. He needs 35 ground balls to reach 100 for his career.

CAPUTO JOINS THE DEFENSE The Duke coaching staff switched things up this season as assistant coach Ron Caputo moves from the offensive to the defensive side of the ball. Caputo has worked closely with the midfield and attack during his time with Duke. Head coach John Danowski recently had been with the defense for the past few seasons and now Caputo will take over the reins with volunteer assistant coach Alec Jernstedt, while John Danowski joins his son Matt on offense.

GUTERDING, BRUCKNER HEADLINE OFFENSE Justin Guterding and Jack Bruckner will headline the attack in 2017, returning with a combined 194 goals and 273 points overall in their careers. They are Duke’s top returning scorers from 2016. Guterding was the ACC’s top scorer from a year ago with 71 points. Bruckner needs just one goal and Guterding needs five to reach 100 for their careers. They will be the 17th and 18th Blue Devils to reach the century mark. Bruckner is 33rd on the Duke career points chart, while Guterding is 30th.

GUTERDING RETURNS AFTER MAKING HISTORY Sophomore Justin Guterding established a pair of records in 2016, becoming the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and the first player to score 70 points in each of his first two seasons. Guterding reached the 100-points mark in only 25 games, besting Matt Danowski’s record of 27. He has 141 career points in 37 games from 95 goals and 46 assists. His 3.81 points per game career average is fifth among active players.

BLUE DEVILS DUO RIDING POINT STREAKS Justin Guterding has scored a point in all 37 of his games as a Blue Devil, totaling 95 goals and 46 assists for 141 points. Jack Bruckner is riding a 38-game point streak, dating back to May 26, 2014. He has 120 points from 92 goals and 28 assists in that span.

AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS IN OPENER Since 2007, Duke has opened the season against a top 20 opponent four times. The Blue Devils are 3-1 in the four outings with the lone loss came against Denver, 14-12, in 2013.
