O Prêmio Laureate Brasil – Jovem Empreendedor Social

We welcome these exceptional young leaders to YouthActionNet’s growing network of 1,970 social entrepreneurs in 94 countries. Through connecting them to their peers across

the globe and providing continuing education opportunities, we aim to support their journeys for a lifetime.

É com imenso orgulho que promovemos mais uma edição do Prêmio Laureate Brasil – Jovem Empreendedor Social, uma iniciativa que há 11 anos reconhece o esforço, a dedicação e a criatividade de jovens de todas as regiões do País. Considero uma excelente conquista para os vencedores figurar nesta lista, afinal recebemos anualmente inscrições de diversos projetos, todos dignos de uma menção honrosa, tendo em vista as histórias comoventes envolvendo cada proposta.

Vivemos em um novo cenário mundial, onde o empreendedorismo social merece atenção redobrada. A contribuição e o apoio que oferecemos para ações dessa magnitude trazem perspectivas de um futuro melhor no longo prazo, principalmente quando os programas estão alinhados com uma causa maior e de bem-estar coletivo: os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU).

Nesse período, também começamos a quantificar o impacto que causamos em nossos estudantes, colaboradores, comunidade, governança e meio ambiente por meio da avaliação B CorpTM, administrada pela B Lab , organização independente sem fins lucrativos, que utiliza os negócios como uma força para o bem. Desde então, a nossa rede de instituições de ensino superior auferiu a categoria de Empresa B Certificada .

Assim como fazemos na Laureate, esses jovens também buscam o equilíbrio em cada atitude tomada para que todos na cadeia sejam beneficiados. Eles transformam ideias em soluções viáveis e inovadoras, capazes de equacionar problemas sociais, ambientais e econômicos da nossa realidade. E os resultados mostram que é possível fazer a diferença na vida das pessoas. Portanto, com a sensação de dever cumprido, apresentamos os selecionados da edição 2018 do Prêmio Laureate Brasil – Jovem Empreendedor Social e acreditamos na multiplicação desses exemplos inspiradores para a posteridade.

We are immensely proud to announce one more edition of the Laureate Brazil Award – Young Social Entrepreneurs, a venture that for 11 years has acknowledged the effort, dedication and creativity of young people from all over the country. I believe it is an outstanding achievement for the winners to be shortlisted. After all, we receive applications of several projects, all of them worthy of an honorable mention bearing in mind the moving stories involving each application.

We live in a new global scenario where social entrepreneurship deserves increased attention. The contribution and support we offer to actions of this magnitude bring better future prospects in the long run, especially when the programs are aligned with a major and collective well-being cause: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.

Those who act on this front have the opportunity to make positive and long-lasting changes in their communities proactively, just as our network, Laureate International Universities, does by increasing access to a quality education. We know that schooling educates citizens more conscious to face the challenges of our reality, that is why we have the mission Here for Good in our DNA, that means being here for good and forever.

In addition to that, Laureate has become a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) in the US since 2015, joining a global movement that is redefining business success to aggregate more value to society. During this period, we also started to assess the impact we had on our students, collaborators, community, governance and the environment through the B CorpTM, conducted by the B Lab®, an independent non-profit organization that deals with business as a force for good. Since then our network of higher education institutions has been certified as a Certified B Corporation®.

Just as we do in Laureate, these young people search for balance in every attitude adopted to benefit everyone in the chain. They transform ideas into feasible and innovative solutions capable of solving social, environmental and economic problems of our reality. And the results reveal that it is possible to make a difference in people’s lives. Therefore, with a sense of achievement, we present the young people selected in the 2018 Laureate Brazil Award – Young Social Entrepreneurs edition and believe in the dissemination of these inspiring examples for posterity.

Desde 2005, a Laureate International Universities, maior rede global de instituições de ensino superior, presente em diversos países, possui parceria com o programa YouthActionNet®, por meio da International Youth Foundation, com o intuito de estimular a criação de programas locais incentivadores do empreendedorismo social, a partir da articulação das universidades de sua rede.

Since 2005, Laureate International Universities, considered the largest global network of higher education institutions in several countries, has a partnership with the YouthActionNet® program, through the International Youth Foundation, with the aim of stimulating the creation of local programs promoting social entrepreneurship as a result of the articulation of the universities of its network.

The Laureate Brazil Award – Young Social Entrepreneurs was founded with the mission of supporting young social entrepreneurs aged 18 to 29 who, as leaders in their communities, contribute to positive social impact in the country.

Currently, the Laureate Brazil Award – Young Social Entrepreneurs unites four initiatives: Young Social Entrepreneur – Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, Young Social Entrepreneur – Universidade Potiguar, Young Social Entrepreneur – Centro Universitário do Norte and Young Social Entrepreneur – Universidade Salvador.

Each of these programs articulate actions and regional support for local initiatives by means of the structure and

academic excellence at the Universidade Anhembi Morumbi in the Southeast, the Potiguar University in the Northeast, and Uninorte in the North. In addition to these four educational institutions, the programs also work in close partnership with the International Youth Foundation.

Annually, the Award selects young candidates from the local programs to participate in a Social Entrepreneurship course and join an international network of social entrepreneurs, the global program YouthActionNet®. Created in 2001 by the International Youth Foundation, this global program aims to recognize, support and lend visibility to youth leadership that dedicate themselves to Social Entrepreneurship.

The 11 students selected in this edition will join this global network that unites 1,970 young social entrepreneurs in 94 countries that promote a positive impact on more than 2 million lives annually.

Com a virada do milênio, houve uma crescente conscientização sobre assuntos ligados à sustentabilidade e ao consumo responsável, além de questões associadas à inclusão

social, à cidadania e à cultura.

Por outro lado, jovens lideranças surgem como agentes promotores, que por meio de soluções inovadoras atenuam algumas das necessidades identificadas nas comunidades a qual estão inseridos, vinculadas a ações ligadas a temas

como educação, arte e cultura, saúde, inclusão social, meio ambiente, desenvolvimento local e geração de renda.

Neste contexto, o Prêmio Laureate Brasil – Jovem Empreendedor Social tem como intuito reconhecer,

capacitar e apoiar as boas ações desenvolvidas pelos jovens empreendedores sociais, para que estes continuem a se

dedicar e a auxiliar no progresso social de suas comunidades, contribuindo assim para o desenvolvimento sustentável do

País.

Desde a primeira edição do Prêmio Laureate Brasil – Jovem Empreendedor Social foram registradas 1.087

inscrições de jovens empreendedores sociais. Deste montante foram selecionados e premiados 156 jovens que,

em conjunto, receberam 1.300 horas de capacitação em empreendedorismo social com o propósito de alavancar os benefícios gerados pelas respectivas ações e impactando

159.931 pessoas positivamente.

With the turn of the millennium, there has been a growing awareness of issues related to sustainability and responsible consumption, as well as issues related to social inclusion, citizenship and culture.

At the same time, young leaders are increasingly taking on new roles as social actors, creating innovative solutions to mitigate some of the needs of their communities, and acting in areas such as education, arts and culture, health, social inclusion, environment, local development and income generation.

In this context, the Laureate Brazil Award – Young Social Entrepreneurs aims to recognize, empower and support the good deeds performed by young social entrepreneurs so that they continue to contribute to the social development of their communities, and the sustainable development of the country.

Since the first edition of the Award, we have evaluated 1,087 applications of young social entrepreneurs. From this pool we have selected and awarded 156 young people who together have received 1,300 hours of training in social entrepreneurship, strengthening the impact of their work, and positively impacting the lives of 159,931 individuals.

Promoted since 2008 the program aims at recognizing and supporting projects of young social entrepreneurs who develop initiatives that impact communities and achieve positive changes that contribute to social welfare. Its mission is to recognize and support young people with a potential for social entrepreneurship that have developed innovative social projects, providing them with the additional training, support and encouragement needed to achieve positive change in the Southeastern and South communities in Brazil. The projects can focus on any area, provided that their young founders have achieved results that demonstrate significant impact in the communities where they work.

This program is designed to be an opportunity for the youth of Rio Grande do Norte and the Northeastern region of Brazil to develop entrepreneurial activities with positive social impact. JOVEM EMPREENDEDOR SOCIALCENTRO UNIVERSITÁRIO DO NORTE

Lançado pelo Centro Universitário do Norte (UniNorte), em 2014, o programa busca reconhecer os jovens empreendedores sociais que estão empenhados em promover mudanças significativas nas comunidades em que atuam em toda a região Norte do País. Para a UniNorte, é uma honra premiar projetos que vislumbraram oportunidades na dificuldade e tiveram a habilidade de ver potencial em projetos que outros não conseguiam ver. Uma vez selecionado e premiado, o candidato passa a integrar a comunidade de jovens empreendedores sociais e participar das atividades e oportunidades geradas por essa iniciativa.

YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURCENTRO UNIVERSITÁRIO DO NORTE

Launched by the Centro Universitário do Norte (UniNorte) in 2014, the program seeks to recognize young social entrepreneurs who are committed to promoting meaningful changes in the communities where they work across the Northern region of the country. For UniNorte, it is an honor to reward projects that see opportunities in difficult circumstances and have the ability to see potential in projects that others could not see. Once selected and awarded, the candidate joins the community of young social entrepreneurs and participates in activities and opportunities generated by this initiative.

Promovido na região Nordeste (Bahia e Sergipe), o programa nasceu em 2015 com a proposta de identificar e apoiar projetos de jovens empreendedores sociais que desenvolvem ações de impacto em comunidades, a fim de promover intervenções e transformações locais. A iniciativa visa apoiar jovens visionários, com ações empreendedoras de responsabilidade social e ambiental, capazes de realizar intervenções com as realidades e mobilizar as comunidades para a solução de problemas locais. O compromisso está no desenvolvimento integral dos jovens, como profissionais, pessoas e cidadãos, apoiando-os na realização de sua vocação empreendedora, para o desenvolvimento de projetos sociais inovadores, que gerem mudanças positivas em comunidades.

Promoted in the Northeast region (Bahia and Sergipe), the program was founded in 2015 with the objective of identifying and supporting young social entrepreneurs who develop actions that positively impact their communities. The initiative aims to support young visionaries with entrepreneurial initiatives of social and environmental responsibility who can carry out interventions and mobilize communities for the solution of their local problems. The program is committed to the full development of young people as professionals, individuals and citizens, supporting them in achieving their entrepreneurial vocation, and helping them develop innovative social projects that generate positive change in communities.

The initiative aims to reduce the Brazilian economic and social inequality

by offering job opportunities to people in situations of vulnerability. Among the actions are planting, replanting

and harvesting of food in large urban centers and poor areas with a view to taking agriculture into cities by using

idle corporate spaces and develop a sustainable production of food that

absorbs waste transformed into manure after the composting process, thus avoiding the incorrect disposal and

contamination of the environment. The production is 100% organic. Every

urban garden is replicated by means of a donation of a new one in a social risk

area. It received honorable mention and seal of the United Nations Sustainable

Development Program (UNDP) for considering 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals interdisciplinarity.

A iniciativa tem como objetivo reduzir a desigualdade econômica e social brasileira oferecendo oportunidades de trabalho a pessoas em situação de vulnerabilidade. Entre as ações estão o plantio, o replantio e a colheita de alimentos nos grandes centros e em áreas pobres, com intuito de levar a agricultura para dentro das cidades ao usar espaços corporativos ociosos e desenvolver uma produção sustentável de alimentos, que absorva resíduos transformados em adubo após processo de compostagem, evitando assim a destinação incorreta e a contaminação do meio ambiente. A produção é 100% orgânica e a cada horta urbana construída é feita uma replicação, com doação de outra para um local de risco social. Por contemplar 14 dos 17 ODS de forma transversal, recebeu menção honrosa e chancela do Programa das Nações Unidas para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (PNUD).

Psychologist Jeniffer Tavares came up with the idea when she was a

student and started assisting victims of child sexual abuse. That’s when she

felt like writing texts about the issue in order to comfort patients. The initiative develops lectures in companies, trades,

professional training programs, school training courses besides therapeutic care. Her belief is that working with education,

prevention and treatment enables the reduction and mitigates the impacts of this type of violence or even prevents it

from happening.

A ideia foi concebida pela psicóloga Jeniffer Tavares quando ela ainda era estudante e começou a atender a pessoas vítimas de abuso sexual na infância. Nesse momento surgiu a vontade de escrever textos sobre o assunto como forma de transmitir conforto aos pacientes. A iniciativa desenvolve palestras em empresas, comércios, cursos para profissionais, capacitações para escolas, além de atendimentos terapêuticos. Sempre com a crença de que o trabalho nos âmbitos da educação, prevenção e tratamento possibilitam diminuir ou minimizar os impactos dessa forma de violência ou até mesmo evitar que essa situação aconteça.

Focused on insanitary dwelling, the initiative was a result of Matheus Cardoso’s personal experience. He noticed low-quality housing in the far east region of the city of

São Paulo, where he lived. As a building technician student, he believed he could be an entrepreneur and solve a situation that impacted not only his condition but

also the condition of 40 million Brazilian people. Currently, after two years in

operation, the project has done over 400 home improvements, impacted approximately

1,700 people directly and has the social entrepreneur as responsible for workforce and implementation teams. The purpose

is not just to offer a beautiful house, but a healthy environment free from adversities.

Focado na questão das residências insalubres, a iniciativa nasceu da experiência pessoal de Matheus Cardoso, que sempre via problemas na qualidade das habitações na região em que morava, extremo leste da cidade de São Paulo. Cursando técnico em Edificações, o jovem percebeu que podia empreender e, ao mesmo tempo, resolver uma situação que assolava não apenas ele, mas também outros 40 milhões de brasileiros. Atualmente, em dois anos de operação, o projeto já realizou mais de 400 reformas, impactou aproximadamente 1.700 pessoas diretamente e tem o empreendedor social como responsável pelas equipes de mão de obra e de execução dos serviços. O intuito é oferecer mais do que opção de ter uma casa bonita, mas sim um ambiente saudável e livre de mazelas.

The conception of this entrepreneurial education project focused on young people

aged 14 to 19 in social vulnerability living in Brazil’s countryside. They come from families who benefit from the Bolsa Família Program.

The project enables them to have access to knowledge, networking and tools that help

them think and build a new way towards the future. It aims to stimulate these youth to be

protagonists of their lives so that they promote the necessary changes. The project offers

events, lectures, workshops, debates, technical visits and other complementary experiences

based on the pillars that guide the work. After three years of operation, there have been

conducted lectures to over six thousand young people and obtained over 450 graduates from

15 different cities from the South of Minas Gerais and East of São Paulo State.

Projeto de educação empreendedora concebido com foco em jovens de 14 a 19 anos em estado de vulnerabilidade social de cidades no interior do País, em especial oriundos de famílias beneficiadas pelo Programa Bolsa Família do governo federal, proporcionando o acesso ao conhecimento, networking e ferramentas que ajudam a pensar e construir um novo caminho ao futuro. O objetivo é estimular que esse público seja protagonista de sua vida e promova as mudanças necessárias. A partir dos pilares que norteiam o trabalho são oferecidos eventos, palestras, oficinas, debates, visitas técnicas e outras experiências complementares. Em três anos de atuação, já foram realizadas palestras para mais de seis mil jovens e obtidos mais de 450 formados, de 15 cidades diferentes do sul de minas e leste paulista.

Founded in 2015, the project is a socioenvironmental startup that develops

technologies for treatment, monitoring, evaluation and distribution of water

recognized by the United Nations (UN). Anna Luísa created the Aqualuz, a low-

cost device for cleaning water from cisterns in semiarid regions. It uses solar

radiation that promotes independence to families to have access to potable

water for 15 years without the need for maintenance. The focus is searching accessible tools based on innovation

and cost-benefit to solve the issue. The participants are young people that have

a multidisciplinary profile containing three approaches: product improvement,

management and commercial.

Fundado em 2015, o projeto é uma startup de impacto socioambiental que desenvolve tecnologias hídricas para tratamento, monitoramento, avaliação ou distribuição de água, reconhecido pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). Anna Luísa criou o Aqualuz, dispositivo de baixo custo para potabilização de água de cisterna do semiárido, usando radiação solar que promove a independência das famílias ao acesso à água potável pela durabilidade de 15 anos sem necessitar de manutenção. O foco é buscar ferramentas acessíveis com base em inovação e custo-benefício para solucionar essa questão. A equipe que atua na iniciativa é formada por jovens de perfil multidisciplinar com três enfoques: aperfeiçoamento do produto, gestão e comercial.

The startup from Bahia develops socioenvironmental products. Created

in 2015, the project has in its portfolio three educational games related to

Environmental Adventure that unite values of sustainability, respect to culture

and historic heritage, regionalization, handmade artwork, income generation

for cooperatives and incentive to reading – as well as a range of personalized

decorative cushions made of PET fiber. In the first two years, the focus was to act as a personal initiative of itinerant volunteer consulting working together

with Latin America’s NGOs on behalf of their needs. Today, it is a social business with a sustainable production cycle that

follows a new consumption model as part of creative economy in order to generate socioenvironmental impact experiences

that transform waste into products.

A startup baiana desenvolve produtos socioambientais. Criado em 2015, o projeto possui no portfólio três jogos educativos na linha Aventura Ambiental – que reúne os valores de sustentabilidade, respeito à cultura e patrimônio histórico, regionalização, confecção artesanal, geração de renda para cooperativas e estímulo à leitura – e uma linha de almofadas decorativas personalizáveis feita de fibra pet. Nos dois primeiros anos, o foco era atuar como uma iniciativa pessoal de consultoria voluntária itinerante, que trabalhava junto a ONGs da América Latina em prol de suas necessidades. Hoje é um negócio social com ciclo produtivo sustentável, que trabalha em um novo modelo de consumo como parte da economia criativa, com propósito de gerar experiências de impacto socioambiental, transformando resíduos em produtos.

As a child, Ana Géssica was benefited with recorder lessons. This opportunity

transformed her life perspective bringing along the desire to multiply the action that

did her so well. The project Let’s do Art was created thanks to the desire to offer

people the same feeling. It assists children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 in situation

of vulnerability and social risk. They are offered music lessons, musical practice

as well as socio educational activities. So far, the initiative, that has been acting for 12 years, has already benefited over 230 families, generating jobs and income for

20 music professionals.

Na infância, Ana Géssica foi beneficiada com aulas de flauta doce. A oportunidade transformou a sua perspectiva de vida e trouxe o desejo de multiplicar essa ação que a fazia tão bem. Dessa vontade de proporcionar às pessoas a mesma sensação, nasceu em 2006 o projeto Vamos Fazer Arte, que atende a crianças e a adolescentes de 6 a 17 anos em situação de vulnerabilidade e de risco social, oferecendo-lhes aulas de musicalização e prática musical, além de atividades socioeducativas. Até o momento, a iniciativa que possui 12 anos de atuação já beneficiou mais de 230 famílias, gerando emprego e renda para 20 profissionais da música.

Motivated by the wish to stimulate scientific production among young people,

student Francisco Aquino co-founded MOLTICULT’S Incentive to Youth Science,

a program that encourages the development of research projects starting in primary education, going on to technical level,

reaching higher education, through training courses aimed at students and teachers of the region. Its main aim is to instigate the pleasure of discovery and the search for a

better collective life. Due to partnerships set up with local and international fairs, at the

end of the process, the people involved have the opportunity to go on a cultural exchange program and intensify the relationship with

young scientists from all over the world.

Movido pelo desejo de impulsionar a produção científica entre jovens, o estudante Francisco Aquino cofundou o Incentivo a Ciência Jovem da MOCICULT, um programa que consiste no estímulo ao desenvolvimento de projetos de pesquisa efetuados desde a educação básica, passando pelo nível técnico e chegando até o ensino superior por meio de capacitações a alunos e professores da região. O objetivo é instigar o prazer da descoberta e a busca pela melhoria de vida coletiva. Em razão de algumas parcerias estabelecidas com feiras nacionais e internacionais, ao final do processo os envolvidos têm a oportunidade de fazer um intercâmbio cultural e intensificar o relacionamento com jovens cientistas do mundo inteiro.

Born in Garanhuns (PE), Mariana Gueiros founded Wonders of

Pernambuco, an education initiative aimed at the dissemination and the

social, cultural and environmental promotion of the State. The project has resulted in a tourist destination

guide – 101 Wonders of Pernambuco – and three e-books about the region’s

attractions. In addition, it operates in the media coverage of local events

related to dance, music, crafts and popular culture that are spread in social

networks, mobile apps, lectures and participation in radio and TV programs.

Natural de Garanhuns (PE), Mariana Gueiros é idealizadora do Maravilhas de Pernambuco, iniciativa educacional voltada para a difusão e a valorização social, cultural e ambiental do Estado. O projeto resultou em um guia de destinos turísticos 101 Maravilhas de Pernambuco e três e-books sobre atrativos da região. Além disso, atua na cobertura jornalística de eventos locais, focados na dança, música, artesanato e cultura popular, que são divulgados em redes sociais, aplicativos móveis, palestras e participação em programas de rádio e TV.

As a result of an academic assignment, journalism student Vinícius

Sales created InfoLibras, a project whose aim is to provide informative

content to hearing impaired people. By means of audio description videos and

an interpreter that transcribes the text to the Brazilian Language of Signs (Libras),

several materials are made available in a digital platform and in an app that

work as a site of deaf culture news so as to socially include this community represented by millions of Brazilians.

A partir de um trabalho acadêmico, o estudante de Jornalismo Vinícius Sales criou o InfoLibras, projeto que visa fornecer conteúdos informativos para pessoas que possuem deficiência auditiva. Por meio de vídeos com audiodescrição e um intérprete que faz a transcrição dos textos para a Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras), diversos materiais são disponibilizados em uma plataforma digital e em um aplicativo, que funcionam como um site de notícias da cultura surda, de forma a incluir socialmente essa comunidade representada por milhões de brasileiros.

Social entrepreneurship founded in 2014 aimed at creating, coordinating,

executing and fostering cultural projects and artists of the Distrito Federal. Up to now, MUB Producer has already reached

over 200 thousand people through its actions. The initiative focuses on young

people aged 16 to 35, residents in the outskirts with a family income of up to three times the minimum wage

that search urban culture as a lifestyle and social manisfesto. In the past,

it promoted an event in partnership with a radical sports competition and

participated in debates about creative and collaborative entrepreneurship at the

United Nations (UN).

Empreendimento social fundado em 2014 com o objetivo de criar, coordenar, executar e fomentar projetos culturais e artistas do Distrito Federal. Até o presente momento, a MUB Produtora já alcançou mais de 200 mil pessoas em todas as suas ações. O foco da iniciativa são jovens entre 16 e 35 anos, moradores de periferias com renda familiar de até três salários mínimos, que buscam cultura urbana como estilo de vida e manifesto social. No passado realizou um evento em parceria com uma competição de esportes radicais, bem como participou de debates sobre empreendedorismo criativo e colaborativo junto à Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU).
