A carbide solution for every wear partNail making machines that use the ‘single stroke method’ have a feeding device that automatically transports the wire from the coil to the straightening rolls and then into the tool holders (KBE, GKB). The gripper forms are integrated into the nail making tools, which close tightly around the wire before the header punch (DOP) hits on the projecting end of the wire to form the nail head with a single stroke.When the header punch moves backwards, the

nail making tools open and the feeder (EKL) moves the wire forward before the tool closes again and the knife inserts (ZBE, ZBE PRO) come together from both sides to point and cut the wire nail or rivet, leaving sufficient wire overhang to form the head of the next nail. In the last step, the knives move backwards and the finished nail is discharged before the header punch forms the next head.

KnivesZBE PRO and ZBH PRO

ZBE PRO is our latest generation of knives for Wafios machines (any model from N31 to N61) and similar machines from vendors like Vitari, Kovopol, Moroni and Ticho. Improved product characteristics further increase the stability and robustness of the system. The ZBE PRO knives are combined with a dedicated tool holder, the ZBH PRO, which accommodates the larger dimensions compared to our standard ZBE knives.

The most common geometries (diamond points with angles of 35°, 40° and 50°, see page 12) are available from stock. Other profiles like clinch points, blunt points, ballistic points and conical points can be produced on demand.In addition to different geometries there are two

different sizes of ZBE PRO knives available: a smaller one, called ZBE PRO N3, and a larger one, called ZBE PRO N4.

Whenever possible, the larger ZBE PRO N4 should be used. However, the decision which knife size should be used depends on the cross section of the tool holder in which the knife will be mounted. The knife must be completely embedded and the tool holder must provide the necessary mechanical resistance.

The ZBE knives are our proven standard solution for nail making machines. Common geometries are available from stock (see page 12). Special shapes like knives for clinch points, blunt points or ballistic points, which are specifically adapted to your needs, are available in the form of semi-finished products (ground, eroded).

The dedicated knife holder ZBH is made of steel. A screw fixes the insert on the holder. ZBH units with standard dimensions are available from stock (see page 12).

KBE and KBH

Clamping toolsGKB (brazed)The GKB is a tool with a robust design. The carbide wear part is brazed onto the steel body of the tool holder.

Tool insert KBEOur two-part clamping tool is an economical solution. When the tool is worn out, only the carbide insert (KBE) needs to be replaced, which is mounted on the tool holder (KBH) with a screw. Normally the insert is a parallelepiped part (see page 12).

The inserts KBE 20 MRF, KBE 16 MRF, KBE 20 ND and KBE 16 ND are also available in POWER DIE 2000 split version.

The two-piece design of the insert provides unique breakage protection for clamping inserts and helps nail producers improve the tool life, thus keeping machine downtime to a minimum and optimising capacity utilisation.

Tool holder KBHThe tool holder KBH is made of steel and holds the carbide insert (KBE), which is safely locked into the tool holder with a screw that clamps the insert on the lateral surfaces.

Planetary dies for thread rolling machinesProfiled nails are the best option when you need a nail with greater extraction strength.Compared to standard nails, the profiled shank increases the grip of the nail in the material and consequently its extraction force. Profiled nails are produced in thread rolling machines, which use planetary dies to cold-form the desired profile into the shank.

Planetary dies are composed of a roll and a segment, between which the nails are rolled. The roll is mounted on the thread rolling machine and rotates around its central axis. One segment is mounted next to it and fixed to the machine. The nails (with both the head and the

point already made) are fed into the system from one side. When they come in contact with the moving roll they start to rotate and are transported in this way between roll and segment.

There are two main types of rolled nails: ring nails, which have a saw tooth profile, and screw nails, which have a fluted helical profile.

Planetary die geometriesMachines for the nail rolling process are available from different companies, such as for example Enkotec, Wafios, Saspi, Prutton and Zeus. The dimensions of the roll and the geometry of the segments must be adapted in accordance with the machine.

The drawing on the next page illustrates some of the possible shapes for planetary dies. All the tools in the picture have a thickness of 3’’ (76.2 mm). TYPE 75 is the most commonly used planetary die and can be mounted on Enkotec and Zeus machines. The dies used on Wafios machines are similar but have a different thickness (82 mm) and internal diameter of the roll (5’’, 127 mm).

Based on the design of a machine’s feeding system, we can add additional features such as feeding slots or holes on the sides of the segments.

An important aspect that needs to be considered for carbide tools is the mounting system for the roll inside the machine.▲ On some machines the roll is mounted with

three wedges that press against its inside diameter. For carbide tools this solution is not recommended since it exposes the material to tensile stresses which are critical for hard metal. To avoid this kind of problem, a steel interface ring must be mounted between the roll and the wedges of the machine to distribute the stress. The mounting systems on newer machines already comprise this kind of solution so carbide tools can be mounted directly without any problems.

▲ The most common machines like those made by Zeus & Enkotec for instance already have a mounting system that is suitable for using carbide rolls.
