Welcome to vhf,

and thank you very much for your interest in our range of tools. This new catalogue issue shows our updated range of standard and special tools for the years 2008 and 2009.

Again, we are very pleased by the develop-ment of the vhf tool sector during the validity period of the last catalogue. For instance, the sales volume of our popular universal single tooth cutter Varius® has increased by more than 40% from 2005 to 2006.

In order to fully meet the increased demand, we have increased our workforce and in-vested considerably in our machinery. At the same time, we took this opportunity for a spin-off of an independent company, vhf tools GmbH, as a pure production site for vhf tools. Thus the vhf group has grown to four members in the meantime. However, please still contact vhf camfacture AG for all ques-tions and orders.

This new foundation comes along with good news for you: the increased efficiency in the tool production allows us to reduce the prices of tools which we sell in large quantities. Fur-thermore we could keep the prices of many other tools constant in spite the increased costs for carbide.

Please ask us any question concerning our catalogues or tools, our friendly vhf team will be glad to help you.

Frank Benzinger Manager

All prices exclude VAT, customs duties and transportation/packaging fees • Deliveries are always subject to our Terms of Sale; we would be glad to send them to you on request and you will find them on the internet at www.vhf-camfacture.de • All trade and product names mentioned in this catalogue belong to their owners • Technical modifications and errors excepted • February 2008.

Count on Carbide...

Due to its extraordinary features, tools made of carbide are far superior to those made of high speed steel (HSS). For high speed cutting, HSS tools can no longer be used. That’s why all tools in this cata-logue are carbide tools – either com-pletely or partly. Most of our tools are solid carbide tools, the diamond tools consist of a carbide shank with an attached diamond and the router bits have carbide cutting edges.

Carbide is an artificial product and con-sists mainly of the hard materials tungsten carbide and other finest grind powders. This mixture will be sintered under extreme pressure and high temperatures until it becomes a solid object. Therefore carbide cannot be compared to ferrous materials like steel. However, due to its extreme hardness and finest graining which en-sure a long endurance and clear edges of cut, it is also more brittle and fragile than steel.

... or onDiamond!

Diamond is even much harder than car-bide. Carbide tools with diamond attach-ment enable you to process even harder materials and have a multiple of the endurance of carbide tools.

We use two sorts of diamonds – mono-crystalline and polycrystalline diamonds. Our monocrystalline diamonds cor-respond in their structure to natural dia-monds although they have been produced artificially. They are excellent for polishing acrylic to a high gloss. Polycrystalline diamonds will be sintered from numer-ous unit crystals at high temperatures and pressures to a solid plate. This production process is comparable to that of carbide. Using these tools you can work on materi-als of all hardness grades.

Despite their higher cost price, diamond tools are the more economic alterna-tive for many processing tasks – last but not least due to the possibility that they can be regrind for several times.

Engraving Tools

GraversDescription:Gravers are conic tools (halved carbide rod) with one cutting edge. The deeper you dip into your workpiece, the broader becomes the engraving. The relationship be-tween dipping depth and engraving width is determined by the top angle of the tool. A smaller top angle enables a more constant engraving width, even if the surface is not absolutely plane. We recommend our special 15° grav-ers for spindles without workpiece levelling. On request, we can also produce special designs. Instead of the shown conical flattened gravers, there are also cy-lindrical rounded gravers available. Additionally, we offer a regrinding service at a price of 6.– € per tool.

FieldsofApplication:Optimal for plastics, non-ferrous metals and wood.

StopRing:3 mm gravers are equipped with a stop ring (white), dis-tance from tool tip to back of ring: 21 mm; stop rings for 4 and 6 mm gravers can be found on page 41.

Box GraversDescription:These special gravers with a top angle of 92° are very well suitable for bevelling. The material will be cut through nearly completely and bent up then. The oversize of 2° equals tolerances and offers space for glue. The name of the tool – box graver – results from this application: it can be used for producing boxes, or more generally, for cabinet making. We would be glad to manufacture on request also other special designs of gravers. For cal-culating the maximum material thickness which you can process with this tool, just subtract the engraving width (tip diameter of the graver) from the half cutting edge diameter.

FieldsofApplication:Universal tools for plastics, wood and aluminium.

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41.

Ideal for producing boxes and furniture

FieldsofApplication:The conic tip is very well suitable for engraving plastics, aluminium and non-ferrous metals. Due to the fact that this tool is a milling cutter, it is also possible to make deep engravings. If you dip so deep into the workpiece that the top profile vanishes completely in the run-out material, this single tooth cutter is perfectly suitable for milling softer synthetic materials like PVC, polyethyl-ene, softer acrylic, Teflon etc.

StopRing:All cutters are equipped with a stop ring (grey), distance from tool tip to back of ring: 21 mm; on request also avail-able without stop ring.

Single Tooth Cutters

Single Tooth Cutters with Left-Hand Twist

Description:Our universal single tooth cutter Varius® is also available with a left-hand twisted flute. So the chips won’t be transported to the top but be pressed downwards into the milled slot, although the tool is right-cutting – like all vhf tools. An advantage of the left-hand twist is that the workpiece will be pressed downwards, too.

FieldsofApplication:Especially when workpieces have to be milled on a vac-uum table with low holding force, the danger that the workpiece may loosen accidentally due to the “cork-screw effect” will be reduced considerably. The left-hand twist also shows advantages when working on thin ma-terials or such which tend to fray easily. However, the removal rate is reduced a little bit. This tool is good for milling aluminium, copper, zinc, brass, acrylic, plastics...

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41.The left-hand twist presses the workpiece downwards

Deburring ToolsDescription:Tools with a diameter of up to 8 mm have 4 cutting edg-es, tools with a diameter of 10 or more mm have 5 cutting edges. These tools always have a TiAlN special coating for a longer endurance and a top angle of 90 degrees. In contrast to conventional deburring tools, this type can also be used at high rotational speeds for deburring or chamfering all kinds of contours quickly.Especially when you use larger tool diameters with a high frequency spindle, it is recommended to use this special tool type due to its very little unbalance. The life of the spindle will be prolonged and your results will be im-proved.

FieldsofApplication:This tool is optimally suited for deburring and cham-fering plastics, non-ferrous metals and steel.

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41.

Circular Thread CuttersDescription:This tool with its special tip grinding is a multifunction-al thread cutter and a tapping drill at the same time. It cuts the thread in the same working cycle in which also the tap hole is being milled. These “two tools in one” save not only an extra tool, but also a lot of time because the tool change process after the hole has been milled becomes obsolete.

FieldsofApplication:The circular thread cutter with its patented technology is suitable for plastics and non-ferrous metals. It can be used for producing metric internal threads and high-strength cable glands (PG). Each thread cutter (except M6) can be used for producing several thread sizes, so this saves time for tool changes, too.

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41.

Diam. Double Tooth CuttersDescription:The carbide shank of this centre cutting tool is equipped with two cutting plates of polycrystalline diamond (PCD). Due to the extreme hardness and the low wear of the material, you can process non-ferrous metals like alu-minium without cooling. In spite of that you will achieve a fantastic endurance and best surface qualities. Tests in ceramics have shown a more than hundredfold endurance compared with a carbide tool.

FieldsofApplication:The double tooth cutter will be used – depending on its grinding – for aluminium, harder wood, reinforced plastics, ceramics, graphite, compound materials and other highly abrasive materials. Dry processing is cost-efficient and your work environment remains clean.

SpecialFeatures:High cutting speed, endurance and regrindable for sev-eral times.

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41. This diamond tool mills aluminium without cooling!

You can use a diamond single tooth cutter when you want to process the materials listed under “Fields of Application” with a smaller cutting edge diameter. For technical reasons, it is not possible to equip tools with smaller cutting edge diameters with more than one cutting edge. Please take care that you re-adjust the rotational speed and the feed rate accordingly while processing these materials.

Diamond Polishing CuttersDescription:The monocrystalline diamond (MCD) which is at-tached to a carbide shank consists of pure carbon and is extremely resistant to wear. Although it has been pro-duced synthetically, it has the same characteristics as a natural diamond. This ultra-hard material ensures glassy polishing edges. It is centre-cutting and cuts sidewards as well as downwards.

FieldsofApplication:This tool is used for polishing acrylic edges and pock-ets of any contour. A cutting edge or pocket that has been milled is a sufficient preparation. So all kinds of polished acrylic letters or logos can be produced quite easily.

SpecialFeatures:Very long endurance and regrindable for several times.

StopRing:Appropriate stop rings can be found on page 41.

Polishes your acrylic edges and pockets to a high gloss

You can polish your workpieces in several steps if a fine polishing step does not bother you. For instance you can polish your 10 mm thick material with a cutting edge length of 4 mm in three steps. So you do not have to use a polishing cutter with a cutting edge length of 10 mm which is much more expensive. To achieve best polishing results, do not remove more than 0.05 mm of the material per working cycle.

Inwhichcase it isbest thatamilling cutterhasas fewteethaspossible...

The main problem of milling slots is the agglomeration of chips on the cutting edge which may lead to a plugged mill-ing cutter. When a milling cutter is finally plugged, it can no longer transport the chips, and the feeding force of the milling machine will break it. Usually this happens – depend-ing on the material – long before the cutting edge is worn out. So, primarily the question whereto the chips should be discharged has to be solved. Usually this will be done up-wards or to the back. However, the flute should be as large as possible to transport the chips past the substance of the milling cutter. A comparison of the cross-sections of differ-ent types clearly shows that the single tooth cutter has the greatest open space (= size of the flute). This leads to the lowest risk of plugging. The more cutting edges a milling cutter has, the more the open space is being reduced. The less cutting edges a milling cutter has (and the more tapered they are), the easier it is to dip into the surface of the workpiece.

For working on materials which are mainly used for sign making like plastics (PVC, acrylic, foam plastic, etc.), derived timber products (e. g. press boards) and non-ferrous metals (soft aluminium, aluminium composite material, brass, ...), the single tooth cutter is usually better. The cutting edge ero-sion is less strong here than the risk of plugging.

Inwhichcaseitisbestthatamillingcutterhasasmanyteethaspossible...

The cutting edge is the wearing part of the milling cutter. The more cutting edges a milling cutter has, the more cutting edges share the wear. So the endurance, the life-time, if the tool will be prolonged. A milling cutter with more cutting edges has a better true running accuracy than with only one cutting edge. Due to the greater cross-sectional area of a multiple tooth cutter that is being covered by carbide, more heat will be dissipated to the collet chuck. This is especially useful if there is no other way of cooling. Another important factor is that the more cutting edges a tool has, the smaller become the chips. This leads to smoother surfaces.

A double tooth cutter is recommended when you are work-ing on thermosetting plastics or harder sorts of aluminium (short-chipping).

We recommend multiple tooth cutters for very hard non-fer-rous metals (very hard aluminium alloys, brass, ...) and for ferrous material.

Hints for the Right Number of Teeth

Cross-section of single tooth cutter:The single tooth cutter has a great open space

Cross-section of triple tooth cutter:Three cutting edges need much more space

Tips for the Proper Use of ToolsAlways choose a milling cutter which is suitable for the material which you process. Please notice our extensive descrip-tions of the tools and their fields of application. Withstand the temptation to use a tool which you have at your fingertips incidentally. The tool should be as short as possible and be clamped as deep as possible into the collet chuck.

Internal contours should be milled clockwise, external contours counter-clockwise; so the worse side which has been milled in same direction will always be waste. Please note also the paragraph Milling Same or Counter Direction.

You should mill deeper slots in several steps, if possible. Usually, it is more economic to mill a slot in several steps with less dipping depth and at higher rates of feed than at once and accordingly slower. General guidelines for the dipping depth:

foam plastic 5 – 10 fold cutting edge diameter plastic (acrylic, etc.) 0.2 – 2 fold cutting edge diameter aluminium 0.2 – 0.5 fold cutting edge diameter steel 0.1 – 0.3 fold cutting edge diameter stainless steel 0.05 – 0.1 fold cutting edge diameter

In any case, the tool should be cooled if possible. The best way of cooling is with a spray lubricant or – better than nothing – with compressed air. You will find further information on cooling on page 44.

Setting the Operational ParametersFor determining the operational parameters, we offer an interactive revolution and feed calculation tool on the in-ternet. Under www.carbide-tools.com you will find in the sector “Know How” the possibility to get an automatic calculation of these values. However, whether it is actually possible to work with these theoretically determined values depends on the interaction of a number of factors:

what material is the workpiece made of?

type of coolant/lubricant

power/maximum rotational speed of the spindle

minimum/maximum feed rate of the CAM system

stiffness of the machine.

As there is a large number of possible system configurations, these values can only serve as clues. They are maximum values which are calculated for optimum external circumstances for which we cannot assume liability due to the abovemen-tioned numerous configuration possibilities. You should approach these values from the safe side, i. e. you should choose at first for most materials a lower lowering speed, dipping depth and feed rate – but keep up the rotational speed. During the milling process, you can further optimise the results by carefully changing the parameters.

If the calculated feed rate should be faster than your CAM system can actually move, you should set the maximum speed of your system as feed rate instead. However, you should reduce in this case the rotational speed of the spindle a little bit.

The dipping depth depends on the power of your spindle, i. e. only if your spindle has a sufficient power reserve, you may actually set the maximum dipping depth. In case of doubt: It is better to remove in more steps less material than too much at once. If you are not sure about the correct dipping depth, you should also reduce the feed rate. Depending on the construc-tion of the machine, you should observe the following rule of thumb: when using lightweight construction machines (e. g. vhf CAM 100–CAM 2040), you should reduce the removal rate, when using heavy machine tools, you should rather reduce the feed rate.

Please observe also the load display of the spindle controller, especially when you are working with bigger tool diameters on difficult to machine (hard) materials like stainless steel. It should not exceed a load of 80%, if possible. So you should ap-proach the specified dipping depth only stepwise and watch always your spindle load.

Milling Same or Counter Direction

The quality of both milled edges of cut will never be exactly the same. While milling in the counter direc-tion, the tool moves – relatively regarded – against the material. The chip size becomes increasingly big-ger towards the middle. While milling in the same direction, the tool moves with the material; the chip size is reduced again until the exit of the cutting edge from the material. The cutting edge runs in the coun-ter direction as well as in most parts of the same direc-tion against massive material. However, immediately before the exit, there is not much material left. So the last bit will often be rather torn off instead of being cut cleanly. Therefore the counter direction becomes smoother than the same direction. However, this ef-fect varies strongly with the characteristics of the ma-terial, the geometry and sharpness of the milling cut-ter and the operational parameters.

Thus we recommend to mill internal contours clockwise and external contours counter-clock-wise.

What to Do in Case of Problems? If especially plastics should melt, the reason may be that the tool advances too slow and produces too much heat. Please reduce the rotational speed and increase the feed rate at the same time.

If a milling cutter should become plugged, usually the chips have not been discharged quick enough. In such a case, the dipping depth and/or the feed rate have to be reduced. It may also help to use a different tool. Please note the hints on the number of cutting edges of milling cutters on page 42.

When working on critical materials like extruded acrylic, milling cutters with polished flute have proven to be well suit-able. Here the chips can hardly stick to the cutting edge.

In case of a burr formation, you should increase the cooling. It could possibly become necessary to make also an ad-ditional finishing pass.

If a tool breaks rather frequently, the removal rate is too high or the true running of the spindle is not exact enough. Please reduce in such a case the feed rate and/or the dipping depth and exchange the collet chuck for test reasons.

If your material should not be listed, please classify it according to its machinability (hardness). When working on brass for instance, you should rather orient on the parameters of aluminium than on those of stainless steel, whereas when work-ing on construction steel, you should rather orient on stainless steel than on aluminium.

In case that your controller does not have a real look-ahead function (point-to-point or look-ahead of just one vector), you should stay below the calculated maximum feed rate, especially when performing fine engraving works. For instance, if you engrave small fonts which consist of numerous little vectors, the machine always has to accelerate and slow down strongly again. Even if the controller calculates one vector in advance (e. g. vhf CNC 450), it cannot accelerate in a curve to maximum speed because each next but one vector will be “in the dark”. You have a similar situation when you drive with your car in the fog, when you can only see from one guiding pole to the next. So an optimum velocity along the path (as is the case with CNC 550–980) can only be achieved with limitations. The bearings of the machine and the tool will be ex-posed to strong forces due to the strong acceleration and brake applications. On top of that, the machine can “overshoot” due to the mass inertia. This effect becomes obvious in a bucking of the machine which leads to results that are worse on the whole. The speed advantage can be neglected. Please interrupt the output process as soon as the machine starts buck-ing and restart it at reduced speed.

If a higher feed rate than your system permits would be possible according to tool and material data (please note also the abovementioned remarks concerning fine engraving works), you should reduce feed rate and rotational speed accord-ingly.

Cooling/LubricationFor working on most kinds of materials it is necessary – or at least recommended – to cool the cutting edge of the tool with air or lubricant. This improves the sur-face quality and prolongs the endurance of the tool.

If cooling is not possible, the recommended minimum values for rotational speed should be adhered to; the feed rate, however, should not be set too slow. In this case, the heat dissipation will be made by the chips, otherwise you will risk that the material scorches.

Recommendedcoolants/lubricants:

Plastics/Acrylic: dry processing with chip extrac-tion or cooling with compressed air

Aluminium: spray lubricant ALU-N or minimum quantity lubricant WST 20

Steel: emulsion of spray lubricant Emulgan-D and water (mixing ratio up to 1:10) or minimum quantity lubricant WST 20

Stainless steel V2A, V4A: spray lubricant Emulgan-D or minimum quantity lubricant WST 20
