ADDRESS FROM FOUNDER..................................................................................................

Ernest De-Graft EgyirFounder & CEO, Ghana CEO Summit..........................................................................................................................

......

....Ernest De-Graft Egyir is a strategic

operations management leader backed by over 10 years of combined experience in various executive and management functions.

As Founder and CEO of the Chief Executives Network Ghana Limited, Ernest has changed the face of thought leadership in the Ghanaian corporate set up with his flagship Ghana CEO Summit held annually

for the past three years.

He is also the CEO of the two leading business clubs for CEOs and Execu-tives – the CEO Network Ghana and Mastermind Social Capital Network.

Ernest holds an MBA in Project & Strategic Management, from the University of Ghana Business School and BSc. Operations Management, First Class Honours.

His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Presi-dent of the Republic of Ghana, Honourable Ministers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Distinguished CEOs and business leaders present, representatives of our Learning Partner, Deloitte, our esteemed Sponsoring companies and Media Partners, Ladies & Gentlemen, it is with great anticipa-tion that we look forward to host you to another edition of the CEO Summit.

As we gather around the tables to deliberate on lingering and headline issues, proffer solutions and learn from leaders and other industry experts, the expectation of the CEO Network is that we impact the larger circles of economic growth in Ghana and by extension the continent.

There are many avenues for beautiful talk on the private sector, the role of government in enhancing the growth of the private sector and related matters. The CEO Network’s annual CEO Summit seeks to challenge the government to create the enabling ecosystems to ensure a thriving private sector and a functioning public sector.

The purpose of this summit is to bring us all together in an atmosphere of learning, insight sharing, and above all, unearthing the most viable ways of making our economy work in the face of global trends in an atmosphere of cross-sectori-al network. The summit shall adopt panels, plenary sessions and open fora for lively and thought-provoking discussions. Attendees will have the opportunity to share insights, ask questions and draw on the knowledge and experience of the experts and panelists. This will be subsequently followed by a networking event.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Today, the world over, private sector invests goodwill in the state and in turn makes demands through the right levers such as the Ghana CEO Summit for environments that cultivate the right business outcomes. The Ghana CEO Summit is no different. The relevance of platforms such as this, have engineered economic directions in Asia, the Pacific and the Americas where outcomes of such summits have impacted governance, businesses and the corporate lives of leaders.

We seek through this platform to initiate and enhance existing transformation that seek to grow our economy.

Our 2018 edition of the CEO Summit is honored to host some world class facilitators to provide global insights into leader-ship, innovation and investment for business and economic transformation.

This year’s summit is throwing the spotlight on leadership [is it the cause and all else, effect]?

Mr. president, permit me to emphasize on the issue of leader-ship in Ghana and its impact on the growth of private sector development. The theme for the 3rd Ghana CEO Summit, “Leadership, Innovation and Investment for Business and Economic Transformation”. This year’s summit seeks to address the most important issues we face as corporate Ghana and public-sec-tor leaders.

The issues to be discussed bothers on economy, doing business, corporate governance, technology, innovation and investment. These are critical to the effort of the country’s private sector and those of state owned enterprises at a time new opportunities are evolving not just out of the accelerating pace of economic growth, but as a birthing of fundamental restructuring.

The summit shall adopt panels, plenary sessions, keynote expert insights and open forum for lively thought provoking discussions.

Ladies and gentlemen, the challenge of leadership persist and to a large extent, the project of nation building in Ghana and Africa remains much a work-in-progress.

This country cannot develop beyond the level of its leadership. One of the bearings of leadership in Ghana is that, there is heightened venerability of the country’s political economy.

Everyone wins when leadership is effectual. As our leadership effectiveness improves, our impact is multiplied in business, governance, in our police service, in schools, families, churches etc.

In the last summit, our ‘Doing business in Ghana’ panel discussion noted an improvement in the ranking of Ghana from 111 in 2016 to 108 in 2017 in the Global Ease of Doing Business index. It therefore ails my heart that our observation lenses picked up a dip in the 2018 report, placing Ghana at the 120th position, the worst since the establishment of this ranking. Electricity, resolving insolvency and cross border trading improved to see our gains from 2016 to 2017. Question is, what went awry?

A closer look at related parameters indicated declines as well. These include the Corruption index, Corruption rank, competi-tiveness rank, etc. The expected growth of Ghana will not materialize if the private sector is not enabled to drive that growth. We have long established that this economy can experience exponential growth if the right policies and

ADDRESS FROM FOUNDER..................................................................................................

enabling environment are provided for the private sector to thrive, of course under the right consequence management to protect the consumers of the goods and services that are provided.

Which enduring policies that can match those of international trade markets are in place to ensure that there are consistent improvements in Ghana’s position on these rankings? No matter how much innovation the business sector churns out, if there is no confidence in business processing and the perception of corruption, investment is stunted.

To move these beyond the talk and give the letter spirit to thrive, we must ensure that the value chain itself is viable.

Experiences shared in and out of these summits, the evidence of investors packing out of Ghana due to the hitches in services in the public-sector domain are evident that more work is required to move us from being an appeal-ing market to actually living it.

Ghana has been inked as the lead African county on prospec-tive growth at a raving 8.4%. This measure will draw attrac-tion from investors looking for the most returns for their capital. We run the risk of giving prospective investors the option of marginally low returns with a better ease of doing business.

We therefore count on all of you present to contribute in your unique capacities to have reason to meet here again for the 4th Ghana CEO Summit in 2019.

I take the opportunity to acknowledge our partners in this journey: Deloitte, our sponsors and partners, the CEO Network, our very busy Executives who have agreed to grace the occasion as distinguished panelists and moderators and our media partners.

On this note, I would like to welcome you all to the 3rd Ghana CEO Summit 2018.

We look forward to an amazing Two-day Summit. Enjoy!

Winning businesses are those focussed on the new fundamentals - linked to an innate ability to adapt and be fleet of foot facilitated by the ultilisation of the latest technology which is arriving at eye watering speeds.

Recent times have jolted organisations back to the fundamentals. Every business leader – whether they are running a small or large business, service or manufacturing, the professions, not-for-profit, government or NGO needs to understand and then focus mercilessly on the new basics of busi-ness, to ensure sustained success.

The role of the successful Leader today has also been redefined - with an ability to spend time in the helicopter whilst keeping it simple - at the core.

This speech explores those fundamentals of business - any business - and the new role of thebusiness leader whilst keeping it practical and not departing into the realms of complexity andbusiness school speak.

It is no coincidence that the Group’s dramatic improvement in performance over the past 18 months, follows directly from first hearing you speakIan McKernan, Chairman & CEO, Molecular Products Group plc.

You are a natural and highly accomplished business presenter, and the quality of your material forCEOs is unmatched. What makes you exceptional is that the content of your material providessubstantial learning for even the most experienced and accomplished CEO.Tim Anderson, Group Chairman, The Academy for Chief Executives

Increased Productivity ThroughBehavioural Waste™ Management

Mind Fit Ltd is a global leader in changing attitudes andbehaviours to create permanent paradigm shifts in organisational performance, which also transforms people’s lives.

Mind Fit programmes develops Can-Do attitudes and behaviours linked to the individual or groups. Our focus is helping people enable themselves and each other to be the best that they can.

It has been known for years that most of us inhibit our real potential by our internal thought process that often leads to a business disease called Behavioural Waste™.Our process is designed to eliminate BehaviouralWaste™, develop Reality-Driven Leaders and create a performance-focused culture for the benefit of the organisation.

Mind Fit Map® - we introduce you to a very simple map that has been developed and refined over many years. It is intuitively right and forms a base from which participants can identify where they consistently operate and choose to change. Part of our uniqueness is our inside-out process where people discover for themselves.

Scientically sound – One of the founding principles in the development of the Mind Fit Process™ was to ensure that it is scientifically sound so we combined science with reality, people’s attitudes and key components of top sports people. We looked at over 100 theories, concepts and con-structs to find the gems that we could put into the mix. Below are some of the big names whose research made a major contribution:• Martin Seligman – Learned Helplessness• Katherine Benziger – Thinking Preferences• S. C. Kobasa and I. Cockerill – Mental Toughness• Mihaly Csikzentmilhalyi – Flow• K. Anders Ericsson – Deliberate Practice• Donald Kirkpatrick – Learning Evaluation Theory• Bernard Haldane – Dependable Strengths• Albert Bandura – Self Ecacy• Matthew Syed – Black Box Thinking• Karl Albrecht – Social Intelligence

Mind Fit

Mind Fitness is choosing to perform to your optimum in dierent situations, through ‘can do’ attitudes and behaviours, and a ‘winning mind’. (Williams 2010)

Classical training courses will not help meet the challenges of today.

Attitudes are the key. We know that: • Knowledge is about learning, not doing. It is known as the ‘Knowing’-‘Doing’ Gap • Beliefs drive attitudes. • Attitudes drive behaviours – good or bad • Collectively, attitudes form our cultures and they aect our performance • A negative culture leads to a disengaged workforce

• Disengagement is between 66% - 90% of a workforce; particularly in large organisations • Disengagement causes ‘Behavioural Waste™’ which cost time, eort and money • Stopping Behavioural Waste™ and replacing it with focused actions increases perfor mance • Behaviours dictate the level of engagement, performance and business growth

Attitudes are the key - Can we change our attitudes? YES!

Williams James in 1892 said “Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their mind, can change the outer aspects of their lives.”

Understanding what makes all of us unique? • We are what we believe • What we believe, together with our experiences, form our attitudes • Our attitudes in action form our behaviours

• Thinking Brain – the ability to think flexibly and focus appropriately • Driving Brain – committed with a real sense of purpose • Feeling Brain – emotionally competent and resilient • Social Brain – the ability to connect meaningfully with others

Behavioural Waste™

Behavioural Waste™ involves forms of behaviour that can be usefully removed or reduced, which prevent us from achieving our purpose.

Behavioural Waste™:1. It can be personal, cultural and systemic2. It costs significant time, effort and money3. It impacts negatively on performance and productivity

Identify at least 3 examples of Behavioural Waste™ in your organisation (ideally one from each area – personal, cultural and systemic

What would you do if you had one extra hour a day?

Reality-Driven Leaders™

Reality has become a rare commodity in organisations as they continue to do what they have always done. No-one challenges the impact or the consequences of what is happening by checking their reality. Instead, the way we do things around here or what we know as the culture, develops a form of groupthink about how things are done and it is assumed it is working. If things go wrong then the blames lies elsewhere as we have all worked hard.

Reality-Driven Leaders™ check what is really going on, seek new ways of doing things and identify ways to navigate through a constantly changing world. They ensure that changes are formalised and stabilised into the organisation but not in such a way that it becomes a rigid process and removes the flexibility that is needed to survive and prosper.

How do you check reality?

There are four core roles for the Reality-Driven Leaders™:1. Investigator – to identify what is really going on and translate that into meaningful data and information in a simple and pragmatic way.2. Innovator – to generate new ideas and options that tackle Behavioural Waste™ and identify growth opportunities both internally and externally.3. Navigator – to provide clear routes through the complexity that the organisation operates within.4. Stabiliser – to engineer robust systems, methods and processes to stabilise performance at that moment in time, which can be evaluated and adapted to meet the new situations 5. Explorer - to explore potential scenarios that build organisational agility to meet constant and complex change

Mind Fit’s 4 x Global Strengths that leads to a winning mind: • Awareness – most people’s ‘map’ of themselves, others and how we operate is full of holes or may contain some fundamental errors which can be damaging.• Control – people with a positive and flexible mind have considerable internal and personal control. People who do not understand personal control may be dysfunctional.• Focus – to change and improve what you do requires focus on what is really important in the moment as well as the ability to be distracted less often. • Feedback – seek immediate feedback from yourself and whatever source is available.

“Performance is not simply how capable one is, but how capable one believes oneself to be” - Parjares (2002)

Action phase

• What are you going to stop doing that is not productive (Behavioural Waste™)?

• What are you going to start doing to improve performance (Growth Behaviour)?

• How might these changes reduce Behavioural Waste™, improve performance and give a return on investment?
