PLENARYWHATABOUTNDE4.0,ASWEENTERTHE4THINDUSTRIALREVOLUTION Ripi Singh | Plus4Pi LLC “Industry 4.0” is a name for the current trend of automation & data exchange in manufacturing technologies. It primarily includes cyber-physical systems, the Internet of things, cloud computing and cognitive computing.  Different thought leaders have included other disruptive technologies. The case as it may be, the 4th Industrial Revolution is upon us.  Just like the previous revolution, only the adaptive will survive this one.  During the ASNT Spring 2018 conference, there was a conversation around NDE for Industry 4.0. Ripi would prefer to call upon his NDE industry colleagues to think about NDE 4.0 as we enter Industry 4.0.About the SpeakerRipi Singh began his career in early 90s as an Assistant Prof with fundamental research on Structural Integrity after a Post Doc from Georgia Tech.  Since moving to industry in late 90s, he has enjoyed developing valuable technologies, and approaches for aviation safety. He contributed actively to the NDE community through his Research and formation of the ASNT committee on inspection reliability (POD). With MS in Business Strategy in 2006 and a decade of Leadership roles in fortune 500, he developed strong competency in driving change through innovation.  He has contributed to over 25 defense & commercial entities in USA, EU, and Asia. Now, he routinely serves as technology and business advisor to individuals, incubators, universities, corporations, and the state as Council Member of CT Academy of Science and Engineering. Over the years, he extended the traditional practices such as lean and 6-sigma to a much more versatile and powerful innovation & productivity framework

AMS Store and Shred LLCLake in the Hills, Illinois | ĝ 808AMS Store and Shred is a leader in providing key digitizing services to the NDT industry. Today the NDT industry is moving through a technological evolution blending both digital and traditional radiographic methodologies. AMS is your partner in managing both radiographic libraries along with newly created images. Extended storage of radiographic film takes up space and presents multiple challenges including security and storage costs. Less-than-ideal storage environments can accelerate deteriorating image quality. AMS will work to implement a radiographic digitizing process that turns archived films into high-quality Blu-ray discs or data for cloud storage. This allows instant access to files as needed and without the inefficiencies and costs associated with searching through outdated file rooms. Digitized radiographs do not suffer image degradation but are stored on 50- to 100-

year Blu-ray discs. AMS provides two original Blu-ray discs to allow for disaster recovery planning. Blu-ray discs and data for cloud storage are indexed and feature DICONDE search and retrieval capability. AMS digitized radiographs are easily shared globally. Digitize new radiographs to easily access and store images. AMS has been approved by the US Air Force as a provider of quality digitizing services. AMS can provide NAID AAA-certified secure storage for your files prior to digitizing and can also digitize selected films on demand. Most importantly, our secure recycling process for digitized radiographs and those radiographs that have passed their required retention period will often yield a rebate based upon the silver reclaimed in the recycling process. Visit our website at AMSstoreandshred.com or contact us at (800) 262-2344.

It further provides improved contrast-to-noise, computer-assisted reading of image quality indicators, and higher contrast-to-noise for 2T-hole visibility. Lickenbrock Technologies has also released Altux CT, a new software designed to reconstruct computed tomography (CT) images. Altux CT incorporates nonlinear operations and is iterative, resulting in notable improvements in image quality. It is based on a proprietary algorithm called fast expectation maximization ordered subsets (FEMOS), which was initially designed for NDT of aerospace system parts. This software uses iterative image reconstruction to correct beam hardening and remove scatter effects from CT images. There are other built-in functionalities as well. Massachusetts Materials TechnologiesWaltham, Massachusetts | ĝ 229Massachusetts Materials Technologies (MMT) was founded in 2014 based on innovative concepts initiated though graduate research at MIT by our CEO Simon Bellemare and CTO Steve Palkovic. Their research created the opportunity to transform the way material properties are measured by implementing a contact mechanics method known as frictional sliding in portable, accurate, and reliable testing instruments. With these instruments, MMT delivers practical nondestructive solutions for the mechanical evaluation of metallic materials. With the hardness, strength, and ductility (HSD) tester, MMT can accurately and reliably measure mechanical strength properties and mechanical variations throughout samples without the need for destructive testing. MMT’s second technology, the nondestructive toughness tester (NDTT), is a nondestructive tool able to replicate the crack-tip-opening-displacement (CTOD) used in traditional lab testing to accurately measure an index of fracture toughness.

TORAY Industries America Inc.New York, New York | ĝ 332TORAY showcases carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), which offer high X-ray transmission and strength, plus a scintillator with increased resolution. TORAY has been a leading supplier of carbon fibers in the world for nearly 50 years, as well as a manufacturer of other fibers and textiles, plastics and films, IT-related products, and environmental engineering and life science technologies. In the 1980s, TORAY began offering CFRP composite parts for X-ray products. TORAY is an optimum partner who can help achieve customer requirements in CFRP composite parts for various X-ray products while also offering a variety of new molding and processing methods. Because modern X-ray equipment requires a reduction in both weight and thickness, TORAY has vertically integrated R&D and its manufacturing chain, from fibers to finished products, to meet the industry’s ever advancing needs. TORAY proprietary technology has also led to an innovative scintillator panel. Indirect conversion flat panel detectors (FPDs) are used in many fields, but a common complaint has been that light spreading inside the scintillator causes crosstalk to adjacent a-Si photodiode pixels. For traditional models, that meant resolution was often degraded compared with direct-conversion FPDs. TORAY succeeded in improving the detectors’ spatial resolution—and resolved the challenge. In order to improve spatial resolution, scintillating material was pixelated to limit light spreading while allowing for

enlarged detector sizes. Today, TORAY continues to meet new challenges, solving problems and providing solutions for modern needs—and we will keep developing more innovative and high-quality materials, because we believe “Materials can change our lives.”

XARION Laser Acoustics GmbHVienna, Austria | ĝ 446The story of XARION Laser Acoustics starts with a unique approach to detecting sound waves: by measuring how they affect the speed of light! The membrane-free optical microphone technology is being used commercially in two fields of application today: industrial process control and NDT of materials. In both applications, the extremely broad air-coupled acoustic sensing range of 1 MHz is key. In the nondestructive material testing setup, a short laser pulse is directed on the specimen, which for example could be a welded steel plate or a carbon fiber composite component. The optical microphone can pick up the acoustic emission radiated into the adjacent air and create an ultrasound

image of the internal defects in the sample. Opposed to other ultrasound technologies, no contact fluid is required for this measurement. Both the XARION sensor and LUS-setup will be exhibited at Booth 446 at the ASNT Annual Conference.
