I fell in love again in April…with 9Health Fairs.  After my first couple of years, I realize that this love affair happens each season as I travel around the state and meet people who share their experience, stories and deep commitment to their communities. The sense of caring, the gift of giving, the health awareness absorbed, and the trusting community, now that’s the heart and soul of the health fairs as only you, Coloradans, can make happen. It’s a remarkable feat, really.

What you—our partners, volunteers, sponsors, partici-pants—made possible this season was screening over 43,000 lives, providing each with more valuable health information during and after the Fairs, and a safe, professional and respected community. Our staff and volunteer providers contacted over 2,000 indi-viduals post-Fair to let them know of critical or alert values needing attention immediately. You made this possible—the actual saving of lives and livelihoods.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the 68% of participants who get out-of-range 9Health Fair result(s), which means they have the opportunity to improve their health status. This group is significant because now more than ever poor health is not only costly to our quality of life, it can lead us to dire financial straits. Many of us simply cannot afford to wait for a seminal health event to inspire a healthier mindset—that might just be too late.

So, what if we could engage and empower folks to act on their screening results in the early stages and potentially avoid a serious health event or chronic disease? In fact, the CDC says over 80% of chronic disease is preventable. We believe that prevention is at the heart of well-being for all Coloradans and have set about evolving into a year-round health screening

and prevention service, still volunteer-run, unbiased and safe in order to make prevention available to everyone. Our personal health data can not only alert, but teach, inspire and motivate, and now with 9Health eTools and Education media (e.g. Health Happens series), the power to live healthier and make connections to care is within reach.

2018 was an impactful year for 9Health, the organiza-tion, but priceless for thousands of Coloradans invest-ed in their own health. And now, as 9Health invests in its own capabilities and services, we hope that you will join us in our preventive health quest. 9Health thrives when you participate—it’s like a co-op—you receive as you give. Thank you for your generosity of time, expertise and spirit—you are 9Health!

9Health—9 Impactful Free Screenings

Each 9Health Fair site can offer up to 22 free screenings approved by the 9Health Medical Advisory Committee. Thousands received the free screenings and many participants were recommended for follow-up evaluation with their primary care physician. Below are some of the screenings offered, with the percentage of people advised to follow-up with their doctor.

I am self-insured and have been attending 9Health Fairs for over10 years. While I enjoy the low-cost blood work and always take the results to my doctor, I attend 9Health Fairs for the free screenings. Instead of making individual appointments with all these specialists, I can get it all done at the 9Health Fair. —9Health Fair participant

Rheumatoid Arthritis Study/Stop RA 9Health is proud to partner with Dr. Kevin Deane, Associate Professor of Medicine, CU Denver School of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology. This National Institute of Health clinical prevention trial has been able to screen the highest number in the nation because of their participation in 9Health Fairs.

In 2018, Stop-RA had screeners at 47 9Health Fairs. Over 5,000 people were tested and 215 people identified as having the positive RA marker CCP. 54 of those people enrolled in the research studies.

New in 2018—Food Bank of the RockiesThrough a new partnership with the Food Bank of the Rockies, 9Health was able to distribute vouchers for blood screenings at three mobile pantry sites, and teach partic-ipants about the VeggieBook App. The VeggieBook App, developed by USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, educates people about healthy eating and provides easy recipes for families. Partners in this program include: LiveWell Colorado (Double Up Food Bucks), representatives from Medicaid, and Federally Qualified Health Centers. Efforts also included support from CREA Results Staff.

YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program: In 2018, 9Health volunteer medical professionals made critical and alert calls to 139 people with dangerous levels of glucose, and to 156 people with critical out-of-range A1c. Our YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program partners also stepped in to alert many other participants with high levels to follow-up with their health care providers. They have been a presence at many spring and fall fairs, and as a result of this partnership, we are able to educate more people about diabetes prevention, and help them connect with resources in their communities.

The Colorado National Guard and 9Health have been partners in readiness since 1980. The Colorado National Guard delivers thousands of needed 9Health Fair supplies across Colorado, which in turn, helps them practice readiness training before deployment overseas or in case of a State emergency. National Guard members log over 4,000 miles each year to make sure each health fair has the supplies it needs to serve their community.

The Lions Club and Rotary Clubs have been partners with 9Health from the very first 9Health Fairs in 1980. Lions and Rotary Club members served as cashiers at 45 Spring Fairs and 3 Fall Fairs. Cashiers are responsible for processing onsite registration payments by cash, check or credit cards, processing blood screening vouchers and volunteer discounts, and recon-ciling fair paperwork.

Interactive Educational Centers (IECs) play an integral role at 9Health Fair. Comprised of local and statewide organizations, IECs provide accurate, credible health, wellness, and safety information and education for the community. The IECs share information and do hands-on demonstrations to help participants understand the relationship between positive lifestyles and their overall health.

Dr. Ben Ferree was born in the small rural community of Limon, Colorado, population of around 2,000. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Wyoming in 2006 and was eager to return to Limon to help fill a great need for medical professionals in rural Colorado communities. Ben and his wife, Susan, who is also a pharmacist, are co-owners of Ben’s Family Pharmacy on the edge of town near I-70.

Their commitment to providing the highest quality of pharmaceutical care is clear, but so is their passion for supporting their community. As Ben explains, “Every dollar we can save the people in Limon on medications is a dollar that goes back into our local economy.”

This hits home in Lincoln County, where Limon is centrally located. As one of the poorest per capita counties in the state, cost savings is on everyone’s mind. And, that’s just one of the health care challenges for many of those living in small rural Colorado communities like Limon. Access to providers, the high cost of insurance and limited plan options, and access to credible medical advice and information are other barriers that keep patients from getting the care they need. As a result, many go without.

So, in 2018, Ben and Susan saw an opportunity to “up the ante” on their commitment to their frontier community, becom-ing site leaders for the Limon 9Health Fair. They realized the incredible value of coordinating with local organizations and healthcare professionals to provide as many meaningful, low-cost health screenings as possible, and credible healthcare education for all age groups.

From Ben and Susan’s perspective, you cannot beat the value patients get by utilizing the screenings offered through the 9Health Fair. And, their experience as site leaders will hopefully inspire others to get involved at a deeper level in their own communities.

Meet Billie Hendry. Billie is one of our beloved phlebotomists. A what?

Phlebotomists or “phlebs” are the friendly volunteers who draw blood at our popular blood screenings. Without them, we could not have our 9Health Fairs. Very rarely do we have more of these vital volunteers than needed, which is why we are so grateful for Billie’s dedication.

Billie began volunteering at 9Health Fair in 2004 when she went back to school for nursing. She needed the clinical hours and school agreed to let her use volunteer time at the 9Health Fairs as credit for those hours. It was a great way to learn and apply her training! Her first fair was in Longmont where she helped with the HW/BMI and blood glucose screening.

Three years later, Billie stepped into the phlebotomist role, a role she loves and continues to do at health fairs across Northern Colorado. She is not only great at drawing blood and working with the participants, she is known in her district as a “Go-To.” She’s that person who answers the call the night before a fair to fill-in for a sick volunteer, and shows up at 7am the next morning ready to go.

Her favorite part about volunteering is the sense of appreciation she gets from serving the community, and her example is the very best kind of contagious! She recently recruited her youngest son and husband to volunteer with her at 9Health Fairs.

Every year, 9Health Fair depends on more than 10,000 medical and non-medical volunteers across Colorado to promote health awareness while offering affordable screenings.

Each fair needs an average of 100 volunteers, and over the course of a year, that adds up to almost $3 million of invested volunteer time! In addition, we have year-round office volunteers, special event volunteers and packing supply volunteers.

9Health thanks the volunteer Board of Trustees and Medical Advisory Committee for their time and commitment.

Outreach

Our Voucher Program 9Health Fairs offer low-cost blood screenings to everyone, and for those that still need extra help, we have our blood screening voucher program. 9Health Fair site leaders are provided with Blood Chemistry Screening vouchers to dis-tribute at their discretion. These are a few of the people that benefited from this program.

9Health also partners with other non-profit agencies to distribute vouchers, including:

Denver Health referred an older adult man to 9Health Fair for Blood Chemistry Screening voucher because he is low income.

An injured, unemployed person who had no income for more than a year, and was on the verge of becoming homeless.

A middle-aged man needed help for himself and his elderly parents.

A woman with a sick husband and no insurance struggling to make ends meet needed her blood screened.

A year and a half ago I went to the Fair as I had done many times in the past and received a huge “blow” from the blood report only

to find that I was seriously diabetic with a blood sugar level that could become fatal. After

showing the report to my doctor he immediately prescribed a lifestyle change. I have since

lost 80 lbs and blood sugar levels today are normal—no signs of diabetic concerns. There

is no doubt that going to the 9Health Fair probably saved my life and helped me to make a

serious change in my lifestyle. —9Health Fair participant

Our Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) is comprised of many of Colorado’s top healthcare professionals. These professionals meet quarterly to review and approve all 9Health Fair free and low-cost screenings and protocols.

The MAC works diligently to involve healthcare providers as active 9Health Fair volunteers, ensuring that quality screenings, education, and follow-up are provided to all members of the community.

Through evaluation and follow-up of statistical data and screening results, the MAC ensures that all 9Health Fair screenings and education centers meet the following criteria:

• Have a sound scientific and medical basis

• Are useful in terms of identifying at-risk individuals or disease in a large population

• Screenings and materials promote good health and health education—free of commercial or self-promotional interest

• Screenings can be implemented efficiently

• The information provided to participants can be presented to healthcare professionals for appropriate follow-up

9Health Fair screening protocols comply with these stringent criteria and undergo periodic evaluation to ensure practical implementation.

It is by the diligence of this committee that 9Health Fair is uniquely endorsed by The Colorado Medical Society, The Colorado Nurses Association and The Colorado Hospital Association. We are accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) for our commitment to the highest ethical standards, transparency and accountability.

Emerging LeadersWe promote health advocacy for young people in Colorado through community engagement and education.

Our Purpose:The 9Health Fair Young Professionals Board strives to make an impact in the Denver area by working side by side with the established 9Health Fair. As passionate emerging leaders on the board, we seek out oppor-tunities to engage our local community in regards to healthy lifestyle habits and health awareness. The existing 9Health Fair provides people with screenings and tools to encourage members of the community to take responsibility for their own health. As the fairs are only offered in the spring and fall, our purpose is to create innovative ways to maintain the goals of the 9Health Fair year-round.
