School vision statement School context School planning process

Cardiff High School strives to be the school of choice forfamilies in the Cardiff, Garden Suburb, Hillsborough, andMacquarie Hills areas. In its preparation of students as 21stcentury learners and citizens, the school provides a caring,safe and supportive environment.

Our students graduate with the skills and knowledge to besuccessful in the next stage of their lives. The schoolculture is built on positive relationships between staff andstudents and high standards and expectations for studentsto reach their potential.

 

A balanced education, supporting students’ academic,sporting and cultural development provides students with awide range of opportunities to excel. The schoolacknowledges and celebrates the success of our studentsand staff, valuing the contributions they provide each andevery day.

 

Cardiff High School is strongly connected to our localcommunity, fostering partnerships in education, vocationalpathways and cultural and commemorative events. Theschool actively supports our families to be engaged in thelife of the school, valuing education and working together tofoster students’ learning and development.  

Cardiff High School is a comprehensive, co–educationalsecondary school located in the City of Lake Macquarie.The school draws its enrolments from the Cardiff, GardenSuburb, Hillsborough and Macquarie Hills Communities.The school has a culture of academic achievement,success in sport and creative and performing arts.

In 2018, Cardiff High School recorded 706 studentenrolments, including 67 Aboriginal students. The schoolcurriculum caters for a wide variety of interests and needs,with a growing number of students accessing tertiary studyand local–industry post–school pathways. The school isfocused on improving student academic outcomes throughkey programs including the Enrichment Class, QuickSmartLiteracy and Numeracy, MultiLit, High Achievers, and theBump it Up strategy. 

 

Aboriginal students are encouraged to excel through theirinvolvement in academic and cultural support programs.Special Education Facilities cater for students with mild,moderate and severe physical and intellectual disabilities.Cardiff High School’s Japanese language program isfostered by a long–standing sister–school relationship withTanagura Junior High School, Japan.

The school Executive reviewed the 2015–2017 Schoolplan, evaluating key strategies and analysing the successof the plan based on improvement measures and externaldata.

Successful strategies to be maintained and continued inthe new plan were identified and three broad areas weredeveloped to form strategic directions.

 

Head Teachers nominated to work within three groups,each led by a member of the Senior Executive. As theStrategic Directions were developed, feedback and inputwas sought from staff through Staff and Faculty Meetings.

 

The school context and vision statement was developed forthe previous plan and was thought to continue to reflect thedirection and context of the school leading into the nextthree years.

Purpose:

High expectations for achievement through theimplementation of programs and teaching practices thatchallenge and extend students and support them toachieve at or above expected growth and top band resultsin NAPLAN testing.

Purpose:

High achievement in the HSC through the implementationof personalised mentoring, study skills programs andteaching practices that challenge and extend seniorstudents and support them to achieve at or above historicalresults in the HSC.

Purpose:

Emphasis on core skills and competencies such ascollaboration, communication, digital literacy, criticalthinking and problem solving supported through access totechnology, resources and technological support toenhance learning and engagement in a 21st Centuryenvironment.

Strategic Direction 1: Bump it Up

Purpose

High expectations for achievement throughthe implementation of programs andteaching practices that challenge andextend students and support them toachieve at or above expected growth andtop band results in NAPLAN testing.

Improvement Measures

• Bump it Up(BiU) program target –Increase the proportion of students inthe top 2 NAPLAN bands to 16% (Year9 2019)

• Greater than60% of students achieveexpected growth in Year 9 NAPLANtesting in Reading and Numeracy

• Greater than55% of students achieveexpected growth in Year 9 NAPLANtesting in Writing, Grammar andPunctuation, and Spelling

Students are actively supported throughwhole–school teaching programs andpractices to challenge and extend theirlevel of achievement.

Teachers will be supported in developingtheir knowledge, skills and capacity toeffectively challenge and extend students,including teacher professional learning andcollaborative sharing.

High expectations, awareness and supportare fostered through schoolcommunication, the delivery of ParentInformation Evenings and involvement inthe development of BiU ILPs. Parents areprovided with skills, strategies andresources that they can use to support theongoing development of their children’sLiteracy and Numeracy.

Relevant personnel and program providersare identified to support ongoing teacherdevelopment and facilitation of programsincluding guest presenters and DistrictOffice personnel.
