My first words are to thank Tarik Möröy for his unwavering commitment, which has solidified the IRCM even more as a leader in medical research in Quebec and Canada. It was a great pleasure to work with him, and I am delighted that this leading scientist has decided to remain with us as a researcher.

I would also like to welcome Max Fehlmann to the Institute’s great community. The IRCM is pleased to benefit from his impressive experience as a seasoned manager and his in-depth professional research knowledge. Dr. Fehlmann can count on our unconditional support as the new President and Scientific Director.

In closing, I wish to express my deep appreciation to my colleagues on the IRCM Board of Directors as well as to those on the Institute’s Foundation Board for their unwavering efforts and indispensable support. I would also like to pay tribute to the researchers, students, staff and partners who contribute, day after day, to furthering the mission of our institute.

As you can see from this report, 2018-2019 marked another year of many achievements for the Institute, and I could not have asked for a better way to complete my mandate as its President and Scientific Director.

On March 1, 2006, I was entrusted with the leadership of the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) and 13 years later to the day on March 1, 2019, it was with a sense of accomplishment that I passed the reins of the IRCM to Max Fehlmann. I wish him the best of success in leading the institute to new frontiers of science and medical research. I took on the duties of the Institute’s leadership with a great deal of respect and pride. There is no doubt that the IRCM will continue its pursuit of excellence with Dr. Fehlmann at its helm.

I would like to thank all members of the IRCM community who have crossed my path since I started at the Institute. It was a privilege to work with you and support your research, your ideas and innovations. It will be a pleasure for me to maintain and deepen these ties since I remain at the IRCM as a researcher to continue my work on blood cell differentiation and blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.

Thanks to them, the Institute has carved out a solid reputation in the medical and scientific world. I aim to contribute to the IRCM’s breadth and enviable reputation.

For more than 50 years, the success of the IRCM has relied on hundreds of talented people. Day after day, researchers, doctors, students, employees and volunteers dedicate themselves to medical research. I look forward to working with such admirably committed people. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank them for their enthusiastic welcome.

TREATING

The IRCM Clinic is a reference centre for clinical care, research and prevention. Clinical research protocols are conducted there and have contributed, among other things, to identifying new biomarkers of cardiovascular risk and evaluating new therapeutic avenues. Through a unique multidisciplinary approach, the clinic provides innovative and personalized care to its patients.

RESEARCH CENTRE ON RARE AND GENETIC DISEASES IN ADULTSThe IRCM’s Research Centre on Rare and Genetic Diseases in Adults aims to better understand rare and genetic diseases, and develop new treatments adapted to adult patients through advanced medical research.

Its ultimate goal is to provide an environment where patients will be supported by a multidisciplinary team and enjoy a better quality of life through the benefits of research.

It is with great sadness that the IRCM community learned of the death of Dr. Robert Dufour, which happened on November 7, 2018.

He was a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemias and was, until recently, Director

of the IRCM Clinic for Nutrition, Metabolism and Atherosclerosis, now known as the Lipids Clinic. Not

only was he a renowned expert and an outstanding collaborator, but he was also deeply dedicated to

his patients and committed to their well-being. Dr. Dufour will be missed by the Institute’s community,

including his patients, who cherished him.

The IRCM Student Association brings together the Institute’s students and postdoctoral fellows. It also fosters their relationships with other members of the internal community and represents them in dealings with governing bodies.

Through the Association, students have the opportunity to develop and establish their leadership and organizational skills. The Association acts as a liaison between students and postdoctoral fellows and scientific management to facilitate interaction and co-operation, thereby positively contributing to the IRCM’s development. Moreover, it maintains ties with other student bodies at Université de Montréal and McGill University.

Valorizing

The IRCM’s contribution to Québec’s socioeconomic development constitutes an important element of its mission. In collaboration with Univalor, a university technology transfer organization, the Institute’s Technology Transfer Office carries out the Institute’s mission by facilitating the commercial development of new discoveries. More specifically, the Office helps set up and assists partnerships between IRCM researchers and the industry, whether it be for a research collaboration, a licence, a research contract or material transfer.

Research Infrastructure

In the field of biomedical and clinical research, scientific equipment plays a major role. However, since it advances at high speed, researchers must constantly adapt to stay on the cutting edge.

That’s why the IRCM has made research infrastructure a key component of its operations through its core facilities, which include dozens of scientific instruments for the entire IRCM community. Today, 20 years after their creation, researchers, doctors, professionals and students are unanimous: the Institute’s core facilities give them a head start, have become the envy of many and help recruit outstanding researchers.


ANIMAL FACILITIES AND ANIMAL HEALTHPromote and ensure the application of animal care and protection principles in accordance with the Canadian Council on Animal Care’s standards and guidelines and provides technical assistance to researchers for experimental research programs.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY

BIOINFORMATICS Supports researchers in the analysis of biological data, particularly high-throughput genomic data.

RESEARCH PLATFORM ON OBESITY, METABOLISM AND DIABETES

NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS Provides a range of services combining advice and access to state-of-the-art technology to meet the needs of genetic analysis and gene expression, with new high-throughput sequencing technique, which is now a standard technique in biomedical and enables a large amount of data acquisition in one experiment.

SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT

FLOW CYTOMETRYProvides characterization services of a large number of cells simultaneously as well as cell sorting using flow cytometry as a multiparametric analysis tool.

HISTOLOGY Provides expertise in tissue sections and staining for optical microscopy and analysis.

MICROINJECTION AND TRANSGENESIS Allows the production of experimental models of human diseases to accelerate the understanding of their causes and progression.

MICROSCOPY AND IMAGING Provides state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopes for observation of cells and tissues at different magnification and accuracy, as well as equipment for high-throughput microscopy and videomicroscopy.

MASS SPECTROMETRY AND PROTEOMICSOffers state-of-the-art mass spectrometry services for the identification, characterization and quantification of proteins and small molecules.

MEDIA COVERAGE A NEW WEBSITE FOR THE IRCM

In June 2018, the IRCM unveiled its new web platform. Focusing on a user-friendly platform, a dynamic content as well as a modern and sleek visual, the new website has been designed to facilitate the dissemination and sharing of information.

This new website is a showcase for the Institute’s scientific research and our clinical services as well as a promotion tool for our researchers and the university curricula for students. The IRCM Foundation has also been promoted at the forefront throughout the site.

IRCM Foundation

Research generates social and economic growth; its funding is an important issue for a society’s development. The IRCM Foundation is thus an essential partner for the Institute. Thanks to generous donors who value research, the Foundation is able to fulfill its mission and support scientific projects, technological development and training activities at the IRCM, thereby contributing to the Institute’s growth and success.


The year 2018-2019 marked the arrival of three new directors: Isabelle Cantin, Maya Raic and Guy Saint-Jacques. We would like to wish them the warmest of welcomes. We would also like to pay tribute to Jacques Gauthier and Marie-Line Beauchamp, whose tenures as directors ended this year, for their invaluable support over the past few years.

However, we sadly lost a long-time partner, J.-Robert Ouimet, who died in July 2018.

In addition to sitting on the IRCM Foundation’s Board for nearly 14 years, he was a member of the IRCM Board from 1994 to 2004. A man of conviction, he was deeply committed to medical research. We will be eternally grateful to him.

It has been a delight to retrace the IRCM Foundation’s latest achievements. Once again, thanks to your generosity, the Foundation has helped IRCM researchers reach their full potential.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Max Fehlmann, who recently stepped into the role of President and Scientific Director. For the Foundation, his vision as the Institute’s leader will be a tremendous asset as we prepare for a major fundraising campaign. We would also like to thank Tarik Möröy, the IRCM’s outgoing President and Scientific Director, for his leadership. It has been a pleasure for us to collaborate with him for many successful years.
