At CentraState, we are proud to be a community-based healthcare system, but

we also define that term differently than you might expect. We embrace the advantages of a community-based hospital, nurturing close connections with people throughout our region and maintaining the flexibility to identify issues and provide solutions that meet the precise needs of our service area. Yet we pair that personal approach to care with some of the most advanced technologies, treatment options, and programs in the region and even the state—all aimed at providing value for our community.

For example, we’re one of a few facilities in the region to provide unique programs to slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease, like dance and boxing programs. Our neurosurgeons were the first in New Jersey to be trained and certified in new cervical artificial disc replacement to provide a more natural return to mobility. And through our solar initiatives intended to reduce our carbon footprint and impact on the surrounding environment, we now produce the largest percentage of solar power of any hospital in New Jersey.

In addition, in collaboration with the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Health Group, VNACJ Community Health Center, and Rutgers Rober t Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), we recently opened the only community health center of its kind in western Monmouth County. The Freehold Family Health Center is a state-of-the-art, 25,000-square-foot facility that will serve thousands of patients each year with coordinated and efficient access to primary, preventive, and specialty health care. This Federally Qualified Health Center also will serve as a teaching facility for our Rutgers RWJMS Family Medicine Residency Program, and our residents will care for patients there throughout their three-year residency training.

We are not only working to improve the health and well-being of the community with a spectrum of resources and advanced technologies that meet the needs of individuals and families throughout their lives, but we also are committed to being a good neighbor in every way possible. To us, that means continuing to design initiatives, provide services, and build relationships that will benefit our community for generations to come.

“ The well-being of our community is at the heart of everything we do, even extending to our efforts to decrease our carbon footprint and reduce the impact on Freehold

Township’s electrical grid through solar initiatives. Our solar farm and recently installed solar carports now generate 61 percent of our total electric consumption.”

“Even though there are plenty of hospitals near our home, we travel 45 minutes for the level of care my dad and I receive from Family Practice of CentraState. Dr. Pedowitz is so giving of his time and knowledge in helping my dad with his chronic health conditions, while being proactive and perceptive to my needs as both a patient and a caregiver. We have a comfort level here that I don’t think you could find anywhere else.”

New Center Opens for Family-Focused Care

In collaboration with the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Health Group, VNACJ Community Health Center, and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS), CentraState played a key role in the opening of the Freehold Family Health Center at 597 Park Avenue in Freehold. Designed around community needs and input, this center provides area residents—including underserved populations—with a convenient new option for receiving coordinated, family-centered health care. The center now houses the Rutgers RWJMS Family Medicine Residency Program at CentraState while providing people of every age with primary and specialty care services, as well as health navigation and support resources designed to keep families healthy.

Family Medicine

CentraState’s family medicine resources are designed to improve

access to care, promote well-being across the lifespan, and

enhance the health of the community as a whole.

Training the Physicians of the Future in a New Setting

In their new location at Freehold Family Health Center, residents of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) Family Medicine Residency Program at CentraState complete their educational training under the guidance of RWJMS faculty and CentraState physicians while caring for patients there for the full three years of their residency. This innovative approach reinforces the importance of collaboration and prevention initiatives to improve the well-being of the community as a whole.

Exceeding Goals in Heart Health Initiative

Family Practice of CentraState was selected to participate in the Million Hearts® Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Model program, a five-year initiative of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to lower heart attack and stroke risk and help reduce costs to the healthcare system. Now in its third year of the program, Family Practice of CentraState has exceeded the CMS goal by achieving nearly a 10 percent risk reduction thus far in patients identified as being at risk for heart disease. This work was featured in a CMS video, and members of the Million Hearts team were invited to speak at a national webinar to share this success story, which involved collaboration with CentraState health coaches and Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center resources.

“ This program has allowed us to transform our practice and better integrate prevention efforts to help patients throughout our community,” says board-certified family medicine physician Robert Pedowitz, DO, medical director of Family Practice of CentraState. “We’re empowering our providers and our patients by giving them the tools for positive change.”

“After fighting obesity my way for 48 years, I realized I needed a better solution. I had minimally invasive gastric sleeve surgery in 2017 at CentraState and began attending the bariatric support group to boost my progress. It was the best decision I ever made. I’ve lost 110 pounds, I’m training for the New York City Marathon, and I feel amazing.”

Sustainable Weight Loss with Bariatric Surgery

To date, CentraState has helped more than 3,500 people with a sustainable solution to weight loss—along with the opportunity to pursue new goals and an improved quality of life—through minimally invasive bariatric surgery, including gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery. CentraState’s bariatric offerings go beyond surgery to encompass a holistic approach that includes before and after support provided by physicians, a bariatric surgery support group, the CentraState Fitness & Wellness Center, and health and wellness classes at the Star and Barry Tobias Health Awareness Center.

Robotic Surgery Benefits Extend to More Patients

CentraState recently completed its 2000th minimally invasive robotic surgery and has expanded the use of this technology across many service lines, including general surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, urological oncology, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and bariatrics. The hospital offers the da Vinci Xi® robotic surgery system, the latest in minimally invasive surgical treatment options, which enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with improved access, efficiency, and visualization. Benefits for patients include a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

New Surgical Practice Forms

Based in Freehold, Surgical Associates of CentraState recently formed to provide the latest laparoscopic, robotic, general surgery, and minimally invasive endovascular procedures in one practice. Its physicians include experienced board-certified surgeons on staff at CentraState: general surgeon and chief of surgery Amit Kharod, MD, colorectal surgeon Thomas Kayal, MD, general surgeon Michael Menack, MD, and vascular surgeon Tushar Tripathi, MD.

“Patients now have the convenience of one number to call for any type of surgery they need,” says Dr. Tripathi. “We’ve brought together access to broad expertise and the latest robotic solutions, all in one place.”

Minimally Invasive Aneurysm Repair

Patients with complex abdominal aor tic aneurysms and iliac aneurysms—which are bulges in blood vessels that can eventually rupture—have traditionally required open surgery to avoid blood flow complications. CentraState is one of only a few hospitals in the region to offer fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (FEVAR) and iliac branch endograft repair for these complex aneurysms. These minimally invasive procedures allow the arteries near the aneurysm to remain open throughout surgery, thus preserving continuous blood flow throughout the body while enabling a faster recovery than open surgery.

Dancing to Defy Parkinson’s Disease

Based on research showing that dance may have more benefits than traditional exercise for those with Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonism, CentraState developed a research study to examine the effects of dance in improving functional mobility and quality of life in those with these conditions. To date, participants have shown improvements in balance, posture, dance step memory recall, gait, and sleep quality. In addition to warm-up and cool-down components, participants are guided by physical therapists in choreographed dance styles ranging from the tango to line dancing. The study, comprised of two 12-week programs, was supported by a grant from the Brooklyn Foundation.

Empowering Those Newly Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease

With financial support from the Parkinson’s Foundation, CentraState developed a free Mastering Parkinson’s education and exercise program for individuals who have been newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonism. Designed to keep them active and informed earlier to slow the progression of the disease, the program includes functional screenings with a physical therapist trained in Parkinson’s disease treatment, along with a quarterly “New to PD” lecture series.

“Our goal is to offer the most advanced treatment options for our patients—from the latest artificial disc technology to extremely specialized brain surgery procedures—to help them recapture their quality of life in their own community.”

Mark McLaughlin, MD, board-certified neurosurgeon at CentraState

Neuroscience

From slowing the progression of neurological diseases to providing

pain relief through neurosurgical advances, CentraState is making a

difference for those with neurological conditions.

The Latest Cervical Disc Technology

Patients with cervical disc degeneration, a condition in which the cushioning discs in the vertebrae of the neck wear down, may be candidates for an innovative treatment option now available at CentraState. M6-C™ Artificial Cervical Disc technology is an alternative to spinal fusion that is designed to optimize mobility and function. CentraState neurosurgeons were the first in New Jersey to be trained and certified in the use of this procedure, which replicates a natural disc’s motion more closely than any other artificial disc available.

Life-Changing Pain Relief with Neurosurgery

CentraState is one of only a few hospitals in the region to offer microvascular decompression surgery for trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes debilitating facial pain. This surgery can eliminate pain and restore quality of life for patients suffering from this condition. Specialized neurosurgery also is available for occipital neuralgia, a condition causing distinct throbbing headaches, and chiari malformation, a condition in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, causing pain and problems with balance.

New Women’s Health Practice Opens

Women’s Health Specialists of CentraState opened in 2019 at the CentraState Health Pavilion at Marlboro. The practice provides comprehensive general obstetr ic and gynecologic care designed to empower women at every age and stage of life. This includes wellness and prevention services, contraception and preconception counseling, fertility workups, prenatal care, and various surgical procedures.

“Education and support are such important components of care, especially in an age in which we are often faced with information overload on social media,” says Margaret Dufreney, MD, a board-certified OBGYN at Women’s Health Specialists of CentraState, together with board-certified OBGYN Angela Markman, MD. “Every decade brings different physical and emotional changes, including those that are very personal. We are here to listen, provide holistic care, and play a supportive role for women from the teenage years through menopause and beyond.”

Women’s Health

CentraState

offers specialized

services and support

that help women move

through the various

stages of life with

confidence, vibrancy,

and optimal health.

Effective Solutions for Pelvic Health Issues

Many women suffer from pain, pressure, or urine leakage due to pelvic health conditions like urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse—which happens when the muscles, ligaments, and tissues holding the pelvic organs in place become weak and can’t properly hold them up. To provide the latest nonsurgical and surgical solutions for pelvic floor disorders, CentraState recently introduced a new Female Pelvic Medicine program. In cases where surgery is needed, it often can be performed through tiny incisions using the da Vinci Xi® robotic surgery system, with many patients returning home the same day.

In addition, CentraState’s OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center offers a Pelvic Floor Program in which a specially trained physical therapist teaches patients specific exercises that target and strengthen pelvic floor muscles to improve symptoms, often within a few visits. The program also helps women regain pelvic muscle strength after childbirth, before an issue like urinary incontinence happens.

Promoting Best Practices in Childbirth

To foster a quicker return to daily life and reduce the risk of potential compl ica t ions dur ing ch i ldb i r th , CentraState has joined the statewide effort to reduce both cesarean section (C-section) and episiotomy rates in New Jersey. As part of the New Jersey Per inata l Qua l i t y Col laborat ive , CentraState is among a group of New Jersey hospitals implementing evidence-based practices that have steadily reduced these rates. Through diligence in staff training, implementing new practices, and educating expectant mothers, CentraState’s C-section rates have fallen by almost a third to 29.3% since 2016, and episiotomies have decreased to 8.74%.

New Image-Guided Technologies

CentraState is one of a few hospitals in the region to offer the following new techniques in interventional oncology, which uses image-based guidance to pinpoint the precise location and access point of a tumor for targeted treatment while sparing normal tissue.

Radioembolization. Using real-time X-ray guidance, tiny resin beads filled with the radioactive isotope yttrium-90 (Y-90) are placed in an artery of the liver via a catheter to deliver a high dose of radiation to liver tumors.

Radiofrequency ablation. CT, ultrasound, or MRI is used to guide a needle-like probe into a tumor. Radiofrequency waves create heat around an electrode at the tip of the needle, which destroys the cancer cells.

Cryoablation. Cryoablation is similar to radiofrequency ablation, but instead of using heat, liquid nitrogen or argon gas is used to freeze and destroy the cancer cells.

Cancer Services

CentraState is expanding the range of treatment options

available to patients with cancer, while enhancing support

throughout the care journey and beyond.

Targeted Treatment Takes Many Forms

CentraState offers the latest targeted cancer therapies based on a patient’s individual genetic makeup and cancer type, which can mean better outcomes with fewer side effects. Treatment also can be customized based on tumor location. For example, CentraState offers protection of specific healthy tissue during radiation treatments. A technique called deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) is one of several methods used at CentraState to protect the heart from unnecessary radiation for patients receiving treatment for breast cancer.

“Interventional oncology can be viewed as the fourth pillar of multidisciplinary cancer treatment, joining the ranks of surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. These outpatient procedures are minimally invasive and nonsurgical, and they provide more ammunition in the fight against cancer.”

Michael D’Angelo, MD, board-certified interventional radiologist at CentraState

Survivor Program Extends Support

A new “Life After Cancer” Survivor Program at CentraState is now providing monthly focused suppor t to those who have completed cancer treatment. The program features input from experts on relevant topics to help participants stay informed and inspired, group discussion and peer support, and one-on-one guidance with cancer navigators each month.

Expanding Access to Cancer Research

Through an affiliation with Atlantic Health Cancer Consortium (AHCC), CentraState has been designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a National Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) site. As the first and only New Jersey-based NCORP, AHCC will help develop and implement NCI cancer prevention efforts, screenings, care delivery, and treatment studies with leading healthcare systems across the state. This program will allow CentraState to provide access to certain cutting-edge cancer research trials for adult patients in our region.

A Gift that Keeps on Giving

Support from the Community

The support of generous donors through the

CentraState Healthcare Foundation makes

many CentraState programs and services possible.

Alan Storm began physical and occupational therapy at the OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center following a stroke that left him right-side paralyzed. He had a way with patients and therapists, always sharing stories and asking about their lives. Despite the challenges he faced, his sessions over seven years at the Center were what he looked forward to most.

“He loved every minute, from having coffee in the waiting room to doing his best to try new things during therapy,” says Marilyn Tarr, Alan’s wife (pictured above center). “Beyond helping him physically, it was so beneficial mentally, emotionally, and socially.”

When Alan passed away in 2017, Marilyn wanted to honor him in a way that made a difference for the CentraState rehabilitation staff and the patients receiving therapy there. As a retired special education supervisor who values continuing education, she worked with the CentraState Healthcare Foundation to establish the Alan Storm Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Memorial Scholarship Fund. It now provides funding for educational and professional growth opportunities for OceanFirst Rehabilitation Center staff.

In its first year, the scholarship committee awarded $1,000 each to two physical therapists: Risheeta Joshi, PT, DPT (pictured above left) and Shannon Lenahan, PT, DPT (pictured above right). Coincidentally, both were among Alan’s physical therapists. Now in its second year, the fund awarded a total of $12,000 to 10 rehabilitation team members.

“Alan had a kind word for everyone and wanted others to thrive,” says Shannon, who became certified as a stroke rehabilitation specialist and board certified as a neurologic physical therapist through the fund. “In addition to helping us become better therapists, his legacy lives on in ensuring that our community receives the highest level of care for years to come.”
