position descriptionThe UQ Women in Engineering (WE) Program selects 20 students annually to be WE Student Leaders. WE Student Leaders are professional, reliable and committed students with a passion to inspire, encourage and support prospective and current female engineering students.

Participation as a UQ Student Leader counts towards the UQ Advantage Award Program and also provides opportunities to develop your public speaking, networking and leadership skills through interactions with high school and undergraduate engineering students and industry.

WE Student Leaders are voluntary positions. WE Student Leaders are expected to participate in a minimum number of events (refer to the following application form) that suits their study timetable and other commitments.

key responsibilities• Attending and assisting with high school student

engagement activities including WE events, TSXPO, UQ Open Day and a west and north Queensland event.

• Where possible, attending high school career days and class presentations.

• Attending and assisting with current student engagement activities including first phone calls, first year welcome lunch and WE Are Industry Ready event.

• Attending key industry events such as the Celebrating Gender Diversity Cocktail Function.

• Contributing ideas and opportunities for engagement with stakeholders; social media and event promotion.

applications close.• Week commencing Monday 21 November 2016:

Small group interviews (daytime and evening interviews available to accommodate work commitments).

• Monday 28 November 2016: Student Leader positions will be offered to successful applicants. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified.

• Week commencing 20 February 2017: compulsory training and welcome dinner for 2017 WE Student Leadership team (date to be determined with successful Student Leaders).

As a UQ Women in Engineering Student Leader, we ask that your minimum participation is: - four major events, one minor event and attend one high school career fair or presentation OR - three major events, three minor events and attend one high school career fair or presentation To help you understand the level of commitment, the following pages outline the 2017 events. If you are graduating in mid-2017 and are able to assist with the minimum attendance requirements, you may still apply.

1. West and north Queensland engineering roadshow Monday 6 - Friday 10 February 2017 (this event will involve overnight stays and travelling between schools). 2. WE Explore Engineering Day Thursday 4 May 2017 (this is an all day event, we require your assistance as your timetable allows). 3. WE Explore Engineering Regional Schools and Engineering Futures Evening Thursday 20 - Friday 21 July (this is a two-day event, including staying overnight on campus. This event is during Semester 2 Orientation Week). 4. UQ Open Day Sunday 6 August 2017 (9:00am - 3:00pm) 5. WE Are Industry Ready Thursday 31 August 2017 (this is an evening event).

Scenario 2. You're asked by a years 10-12 high school student, "What is engineering?" How would you succinctly explain engineering?

Scenario 3. a) You're asked by a fellow engineering student why a program such as UQ Women in Engineering is needed. How would you answer?
