Abrasive BladesBuehlers Abrasive Blades are designed to provide high quality sectioning results with no burning and minimal surfacedeformation. This can reduce the amount of grinding & polishing required later in the preparation process.
Efficient Cutting with Extended LifeAn abrasive blade wears down during cutting to expose newabrasive particles and maintain eff icient cutting. However, too fast ofa wear rate leads to shortened blade life. Buehlers blades have beendesigned to balance this wear rate to maintain eff icient cutting whileextending blade life.
Resin Bond vs Rubber BondBuehlers line of abrasive blades includes both rubber bonded andresin bonded blades. While both provide high quality cutting, thereare some differences between them. Rubber bonded blades may bethinner for some applications but emit a burnt rubber odor whilecutting. Resin bonded blades offer similar performance with areduced odor.

Castable Mounting
Increased Mounting Throughput: With cure times as low as 5 minutes,Buehler's acrylics are designed to increasethroughput in a mounting process whileproviding consistent results.
Quick and Easy Mixing: After a quick measure, only a short mixingtime is required to fully combine the twocomponents and begin pouring mounts.
Castable mounting systems require neither pressure nor external heat and are recommended for mountingspecimens that are sensitive to heat and/or pressure. Buehler carries a complete line of castable mounting acrylicsand epoxies as well as accessories and equipment. Epoxy mounting systems provide good physical adherence, low shrinkage and excellent inf iltration into pores and cracks when used with a vacuum system. Acrylic mountingsystems are typically selected for their short cure times.
Acrylic Systems
Optimized Chemistry for Excellent Results: Epoxy chemistry is a complex balanceof many factors including shrinkage, cure time, viscosity and adherence. Each lab application requires a slightlydifferent priority of these factors andour line of epoxies has been speciallydeveloped to provide the ideal productfor your application.
Excellent Infi ltration for High Quality Mounts: Some samples contain pores and voidsthat are diff icult to f ill during mountingbut must be f illed to achieve the correctresults. EpoKwick and EpoHeat are ideal forinf iltrating pores to create high qualitymounts.

Microscopes offered by Buehler generally fall into the categories of stereo microscopes, upright microscopes, or invertedmicroscopes. Inverted microscopes are commonly referred to as metallurgical microscopes. Microscopes may offer episcopic(reflected light) observation, diascopic (transmitted light) observation, or both possibilities. Illumination may be delivered in brightfield mode (BF) or dark f ield mode (DF), and several techniques such as differential interference contrast (DIC) and polarized lightmicroscopy make use of the nature of light to reveal specific pieces of information when studying materials.

Often a high level of Automation comes with a high level ofcomplexity, both in setup and in operation. DiaMet breakswith that convention and focuses on a fast and simpleoperation to satisfy the needs of low trained operators, whilemaintaining the flexibility and high level of features requiredby expert users.
DiaMet is optimized for evaluating MacroVickers, MicroVickers and Knoop indents according to ISO 6507, ISO 4545 andASTM E384 standards. A standard DiaMet feature is an automatic symmetry calculation for both Knoop and Vickers. This extravalidation, with clear visual indication, helps to ensure the results conform to standards.

Strong Partner, Reliable Solutions
IntroductionManythousandsof yearsago ferrousmaterialsweremainly found innaturally occurring forms, such asdebris from meteorites. The firstknown working of iron was in c.1500 BCEby the Hittites(centeredin what isnow Turkey). It took another 500 yearsbefore theprocessof early steel manufacture in simple furnaces was discovered, andthat quenching could improve hardness. This sparked the growthof steel and the end of the Bronze Age.
Aslate asthe1800s, processing of steel wasarduous. Bulk processing was possible, mainly using the cementation process heating bars of iron with charcoal for days on end, a process that wasboth inefficient and inconsistent. In 1856 Bessemer developed hisconverter, closely followed by the Siemens Open Hearth process, allowing the removal of carbon and other elements from the ironand the true control of the elements in steel began.
Today, there are several hundred varietiesof steel with asmany applications. To meet modern demands, the chemistry and propertiesof the steel need to be tightly controlled. Metallographic processesand analysis techniques have needed to develop in line with theseincreasingly demanding applications.
This paper discusses sample preparation and analysis on a varietyof todays often used ferrous materials using the latest equipmentand consumables.
BackgroundHeat Treatment of FerrousMaterialsSample preparation and analysiswasestablished for process control, failure analysis and R&D. Highly stressed materialsneed tohave the corresponding mechanical properties to ensure reliability, flexibility, elasticity or durability depending on the application.
Heat treatment is generally defined as the controlled heating andcooling of solid metal or alloysto obtain specificpropertiesbychanging themicrostructure. Therearemanydifferent componentsto heattreatment, including normalizing, annealing, quenching, temperingand stress relieving. These treatments can affect many propertiessimultaneously, but improving one can be detrimental to others.
In some cases components need to have varying properties in different areas and in these cases localized techniques can be used. For example, gear wheels need to be hard and wearresistant atthe surface, but maintain the ductility and toughness to endurehigh loadswithout breaking. Surface treatments to create thishardlayer involve using heat and exposure to chemical elementssuch ascarbon or nitrogen to modify the surface properties. These include
processessuch ascarburizing, nitriding and induction hardening.
Induction hardening uses a high frequency alternating current torapidly heat the surface of the work piece. Quenching results in amartensitic structure being maintained in that area, which is significantly harder than the corematerial. Thedepth of the hardenedlayer dependson the operating frequency used.
Carburizing and nitriding involve heating the sample in an environment rich in the desired element, changing the chemistry at thesurface, and as a result modifying the microstructure. In thesecases the hardening depth dependson time, temperature and theconcentration of the required elements.
Checking that surface treatments have been correctly performedis a vital quality control step. Both hardness testing and opticalexamination of the microstructure are used. Both of these requireproper metallographic preparation to ensure accurate results.
Sample PreparationSect ioningThe first step in the preparation of most samplesfor metallographicexamination isthe removal of a representative sample from a largercomponent. It isimportant to ensure that the sample isnot exposedto excessive heat or mechanical damage during sectioning. Sawsdesigned specifically for metallographic purposes should be used. The machine itself is usually selected on the basis of capacity andlevel of automation. Specialist abrasive wheels are normally used,as they provide excellent cutting speedswith minimal damage.
The selection of the correct abrasive wheel is critical to ensuring anundamaged specimen, as well as optimizing speed. The abrasivetype should be selected to suit the material being cut alumina ismost effective for ferrousmaterials. In addition, the strength of thebond holding theabrasive in thewheel isvery important. Hard materialsrequire asharp abrasive in order to cut effectively. If theabrasiveis held too strongly in the wheel, it will not wear and expose freshparticles. This can lead to glazing of the wheel, extended cuttingtimesand excessive heat or deformation in the part. Conversely, toosoft a bond can lead to excessive wheel wear. To simplify selection,Buehler providesa range of wheelsfrom which the user can readilyselect. If cutting components with a variable properties, such assurface treated steels, a wheel suited to the hardest material present should be selected. Table 1 shows recommended wheels fordifferent ferrous materials and corresponding parameters for theAbrasiMatic 300 using 12in [305mm] abrasive wheels.

REPLICATING MEDIA by Dr. E. MOGIRE
Replicating media is used for nondestructive investigation of engineering components and materials. Themedia is a twopart system that solidifies upon contactand reproduces the details of the surface on which itis applied with very high precision. The media findsapplication in metallurgical/materiolographic inspections, failure and forensic investigations and metrologyamong others.
Buehler replicating media has unique features, it issuited to different areas of applications where; High micron accuracy is a requirement such as inmicrostructural analysis of engineering componentslooking at damage assessments caused by creepdeformation, micro and macrocrack formation, fatigue failures in mating surfaces such as on gearsand bolts
Good dimensional stability of the replica is necessaryallowing easy inspection and measurement of internal and external surfaces of complex objects, such asgrooves, notches, fasteners and gear teeth. No shrinkage during polymerization guarantees novolume loss during application ensuring good dimensional stability
Tribology and surface roughness assessment arecarried out to determine the wear characteristics ofmating surfaces as well as general visual inspection oftooling surfaces as shown below
Good resistance to chemical, mechanical and heatexposure to a maximum of 120°C with the ability toretain shape after exposure
Details of tool marks, imprint evidence and tyremarks are required to be replicated for further macroscopical comparison with known tools used in criminalactivities
