LewisLarry Johnson “Lap” Lewis, 71 of Sturgis died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at his residence in rural Union County.He retired from Peabody Coal Company on December 27, 2007 after 37 years. FranklinJosh “Frank” Franklin, 28, of Paducah died Monday, Jan. 16, 2017 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.He was a graduate of Crittenden County High School. While there, he was given the nickname “Frank the Tank” for his bruising style of play from the fullback position. He was always competitive in the sports he played, and that competitiveness carried over to all aspects of his life. Franklin was adventurous by nature, enjoying riding four-wheelers, canoeing, white-water rafting, playing in Massac Creek with his son Brody or any activity that involved being outdoors. His main hobby was wheeling and dealing of both houses and cars where he was always in search of striking the best deal. Franklin was a lineman for Jackson Purchase Energy Corp., and he enjoyed every day that he was granted to be able to provide his service. He was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Paducah, and most importantly, he was a devoted son, husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, Christa Bakemeier Franklin; two children, Brody and Lindee Franklin; his parents, Curtis and Dee Ann Franklin of Paducah; a sister, Jenna Franklin of Paducah; his grandparents, Linda and Bill Phelps of Fredonia; and his father and mother-in-law, Doreen and Charlie Bakemeier of Surprise, Ariz.He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Carolyn Franklin; and grandfather Gary Blackburn.Funeral services were Saturday, Jan., 21 at Heartland Worship Center with Rev. Center in Nashville.He was a member of Life In Christ Church, Fraternal Order of Police, the regional representative for Citizens Foster Care Review Board, Board of Directors for Habitat For Humanity in Union County, innkeeper at Grace House Bed and Breakfast and an avid hunter.He was a deputy and K9 officer for the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department from December 1994 to July 1997. Spillman was a Marion Police Department officer from July 1997 to March 2003 and a campus policeman at Murray State University from March 2003 to May 2005. He served as a deputy at the Calloway County Sheriff’s Department from May 2005 to December 2008. While serving as a deputy at Calloway, he was injured on duty but continued to work light duty until September 14, 2009. He retired from Heil Beauty Supply, enjoyed playing golf and had a love for music that he expressed as an organist. He was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Paducah for over 60 years. OrdwayCharlotte “Candy” Ellen Ordway, 85, died Aug. 1, 2017 in Daytona Beach, Fla.She was born on June 15, 1932 in Dycusburg to Geneva Ellen (Cooksey) Dycus and Mark Dycus, both of whom preceeded her in death.She met Bruce Ordway at Frances High School in Crittenden County, where she was a cheerleader and he was a basketball player. They eloped at a young age and were married for 65 years. She was a an account executive for Illinois Bell until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the American Legion Post 430 Auxillary Club. ThomasDonald G. Thomas, 82, of Brownsburg, Ind., and formerly of Kokomo, Ind., died Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at Brownsburg Meadows Healthcare surrounded by family. He was born, the son of John Edward and Iris (Lofton) Thomas Sr., on Jan. 6, 1935, in a four-room house in the Hebron Community of Crittenden County. On July 4, 1953, he married Velma “Louise” King in the Marion United Methodist Church and she survives.Following graduation from Marion High School, Thomas graduated from Evansville College with a bachelor’s in business in 1956. While in college, he was a member of the ROTC and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1962 and then served in the Indiana Air National Guard. During his service in the Air Force, he went to flight school and flew a variety of planes, including the F86 Sabre, in which he exceeded the speed of sound and joined the Machbusters less than 10 years after he had walked a plow behind a mule. Later, he owned a private airplane, and his children fondly recall trips in their Navion, piloted by their dad. Thomas went on to become owner of the Howard County Equipment Company in Kokomo, a John Deere dealership from 1962 to 1982. He also sold commercial real estate for Dorothy Edwards Realtors from 1983 to 1989 and worked in public relations for Kirby Risk Supply until his retirement in 1999. Upon retirement, he and Louise spent a lot of time between their home in Sarasota, Fla., their cabin in Crittenden County and

their home in Indiana.He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, in Kokomo, for 48 years, where he served on numerous committees and as a lay speaker. He also attended the Church of the Palms in Sarasota, Fla., was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Brownsburg for six years and had re-joined his childhood home church, Marion United Methodist Church on July 2, 2017. Thomas was a charter member and first president of the Northwestern Lions Club, president of the Kokomo Chamber of Commerce, member of the Rotary and served on the boards of St. Joseph Hospital, First National Bank (for over 20 years) and the Grissom Community Council. He also served on the Ivy Tech Foundation Board from 1996 to 2013, which included a term as chairman, was awarded an honorary degree from Ivy Tech in 2001 and was recognized as the Ivy Tech Community College’s Benefactor of the Year in 2005.His passions included flying, golf, his cabin in Crittenden County, people, but most of all, family. Thomas’s biggest joy in life was his family. Everyone he met heard about his children and grandchildren. Don believed that strangers were friends in the making, and he loved getting to know people from all walks of life and had a gift of making everyone feel special. He especially had a passion for education and encouraged everyone he met to better themselves through education. SyersVeda M. Syers, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, following a long illness.She was born Aug. 23, 1928, in Hamburg, Iowa. Veda and her last husband William "Bill" Syers were married on Dec. 23, 1948, and he died Aug. 21, 2014. They had been married more than 68 years and resided in Tempe, Ariz., since 1970. Syers is survived by two sons, David and Cherine Syers of Syracuse, Ind., and Drew Syers of Tempe; two grandchildren, Candace and Joseph Good of Kokomo, Ind., and Anthony and Annie Syers of Greenwood, Ind.; and eight great-grandchildren.Syers grew up in Hopkinsville, and after graduation from high school, she started at David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn., where she received her associate degree. After marriage, she followed her husband’s career moves from Evansville, Ind., Cincinnati, Ohio; Terre Haute, Ind.; Mobile, Ala.; Chicago; to Tempe. She dreamed about completing her education, so she went back to college and finished her bachelor’s degree and then her master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., in 1968. After moving to Tempe, she decided to continue her education at Arizona State University and received her doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in 1977.She retired from Tempe Schools Corp. in 1994 and continued to substitute teach in surrounding high schools for several years. She enjoyed traveling and RVing, but her most enjoyable moments were with family and friends.A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. at Mapleview Cemetery in Marion. AllenAn elderly Sturgis man died earlier this month from injuries received in the demolition of a Marion church.Benjamin "B.F." Allen Sr., 80, died in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017, at Lucy Smith King Care Center in Henderson. His death was the result of head trauma received Oct. 18 during the razing of Free Will Baptist Church on South Main Street in Marion.Allen was born to Inez Logan and Cross Standford Allen Sr. He was a member of New Salem Baptist Church for more than 60 years and also attended Mt. Sterling Cumberland Presbyterian Church regularly for the past five years.Allen worked for Island Creek Hamilton No. 1 Coal Mines for 25 years, where he later retired. He was the founder of Allen Backhoe and Plumbing Service in 1967.Allen had an eighth-grade education and went to Dunbar School, but he studied on his own and on Dec. 2, 1968, he received his registered journeyman plumbers and master plumber's licenses from the Kentucky State Department of Health in Frankfort. He was the first black man in Union County to accomplish being a plumber, carpenter and electrician. Allen honorably served on active duty in the U.S. Army from Nov. 8, 1954, to Nov. 7, 1956. He returned to Sturgis where he later found the love of his life, Andronia Alderman, whom he married and cared for more than 58 years until her passing in May 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Myron Ray "Chick" Collins; daughter Martha Inez Allen; and six brothers.Survivors include son Benji and (Christina) Allen; daughters Sheila Allen and Debra Carter-Smith; brother Mac Arthur and Janice Allen Sr.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Funeral services were Nov. 11 at Mt. Dr. Blanton Osborne Croft, 84, of Hagerstown, Md., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017 at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.Born Oct. 27, 1933, in Salem, he was the son of the late Frederick Vernon Croft and the late Ruth Elizabeth (McDaniel) Croft.He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Murray State University, received his master’s degree from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. He was a college professor at West Georgia University, Purdue University, University of Maryland, Northern Virginia Community College and Hagerstown Community College. He retired after 42 years in 2000.He was a member of Disciples of Christ and First Christian Church. He also was a member of American Legion Post 0297, University of Michigan Alumni Association, Purdue Alumni Association, National Community Association, Southern States Community Association, Virginia Community Association, Meritus Medical Center Auxiliary, Playmakers Theatre, Washington County Senior Volunteers, Senior Center Standing Committee and COA Advisor Council.He served as an intelligence training officer with the U.S. Army at the Fort Knox Training Center.Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betty J. She was preceded in death by her son, David Barnes of Salem. Her hobbies included piano, gardening, cooking, sewing, and crocheting. She was the most loving and giving mother and grandmother in the world. Hill Robert E Hill, 78, of Marion died Monday, Dec. 25, 2017 at his home. He was a member and elder at Piney Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
