2 Deer Management Permits (DMPs) and Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) tags were for antlerless deer. Bucks with shed antlers or antlers less than 3 inches long were not considered legally antlered deer and may be taken using a DMP or DMAP tag. 3 Season Totals include all deer taken on all tags eligible to be used during those seasons. DMPs and DMAP tags could be used during all seasons.

2017 Deer Harvest ‐ Recent Trend Comparison

2 DEC checks hunter‐killed deer each year to determine reporting rate by zone and tag type (DMP, Bow/Muzz, Regular Season tags, etc.) and to monitor biological metrics of deer taken (age, sex, antler characteristics). In 2017, DEC checked 14,372 deer throughout New York.

Buck Take Objectives

Notes: The Buck Take Objective (BTO) for a WMU represents the numberof antlered bucks expected to be harvested per square mile when the deer population is at the desired level. BTOs are based upon recommendations oflocal stakeholders in each WMU. BTOs are not the estimated take for a particular hunting season but rather help guide the direction of population management efforts in an area. In many Adirondack and highly suburban units, deer populations are strongly influenced by non-hunting factors (winter mortality, deer vehicle collisions, lack of hunter access), and no BTO has been established for these units. In WMUs with mandatory antler restrictions, buck takes are no longer a valid index of relative deer populations.

DEC is currently reassessing public preferences for deer abundance and will use thatinformation with data on deer impacts on forested habitat to set new deer population management objectives for each group of WMUs.

2017 Youth Big Game Hunt New York’s fifth Youth Big Game Hunt was held over Columbus Day weekend, October 7‐9, 2017. During the youth big game hunt, 14‐15 year old junior hunters could take 1 deer, antlered or antlerless, or a bear with a firearm when properly accompanied by a licensed and experienced adult mentor. See the Youth Hunt Photo Gallery for pictures of successful junior hunters.

Key Results:

935 deer taken (42% antlerless and 58% antlered deer) 9 black bears taken (3 female and 6 male bears) 7,035 junior hunters participated, approximately 65% of

eligible junior hunters Average harvest density was 2.1 deer per 100 square miles

Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP)

The Deer Management Assistance Program enables DEC to help landowners and resource managers implement site‐specific deer management on their lands. DMAP permits are valid for use only during the open deer hunting seasons and can only be used by licensed hunters. More information about DMAP can be found at www.dec.ny.gov/animals/33973.html.
