NMA Featured Athlete
Name- Elizabeth Lanni-Manley
NMA Bikini Competitor
What motivates you to compete? A few years ago I made a decision to
completely change my lifestyle and started training. I have grown to love
training and am always looking for a new challenge. Bodybuilding is a very
demanding sport both physically and mentally.
What has been your proudest bodybuilding accomplishment? The fact that I
am able to step on stage with pretty amazing athletes is a huge accomplishment. I
have never considered myself to be an athlete and the idea that I am competing
with such incredible and inspiring individuals is such an honor.
What is your favorite cheat meal? CHEEZ-ITS!!!!! They are the best ☺!!!
What is your favorite workout? I LOVE HIIT and Crossfit workouts!!!
Anything that makes me feel like I am going to puke is the best!
What do you do for a living? I am a High School Counselor.
What gym do you go to? Absolute Performance & occasionally World Gym
When did you start competing? Last year-October 2016 Olympus was my first.
What type of music gets you pumped up at the gym? It depends on my mood.
Some days it could be hardcore rap, the next it could be Brittany Spears.
What is your diet like? During the off-season I still like to keep it clean. It
really makes a difference in how I feel and especially how intensely I am able to
train. One of the biggest lessons I have learned through competing and from Jen
Marsala, my nutrition coach, is that you need to EAT to fuel whatever your
training goal is.
What has been a key to your success in bodybuilding?
1. It starts in the kitchen
2. LIFT HEAVY!!!! Women especially need to lift heavy as it is much
more difficult to put on mass. I laugh when I hear a woman say that they
are afraid they will get bulky because for most women physiologically
that is extremely difficult to do.
How old are you? 27…I mean 37
What was your breakthrough moment in bodybuilding? My trainer, Erik
Baker is teaching me how to go beyond what my brain tells me I can do and
break the mental barrier that tells me to stop when it seems too hard. I am
developing discipline that I never thought I would ever reach and I am excited to see what the future brings.
Do you have any advice for new competitors? Although the Internet and social media can be an amazing resource I
would advise that when looking for both training and nutrition help that you employ those who have a solid background
and education in the field of bodybuilding. There are a lot of individuals out there who claim to be experts and it can be a
great detriment to you and your health if you are not working with the right person.
Also, everyone is different in his or her journey through the bodybuilding process and no two bodies are the same so focus
on your own improvements. It can be very easy, especially with social media, to constantly compare yourself to others-
it’s just the nature of the beast. Go in with the mindset that you are competing against yourself and the improvements you
have made ☺.
What is your favorite aspect of the NMA? Every time I compete I feel like it is a celebration of all the hard work that
each competitor has put in. As a new competitor I felt welcomed and almost like part of a family. It has been an amazing
experience so far and I look forward to competing in more shows in the future.
Do you have a saying or motto you go by? One of my favorite quotes by Neale Donald Walsch is “Life begins at the
end of your comfort zone.” Not only do I live by this motto everyday but also encourage my students to do this by
demonstrating to them that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to limitless opportunities.
Where do you draw inspiration from to keep pushing ahead? I couldn’t do this without all the support from my family
and friends. I am very lucky to have the support system that I have.
