FBI Uncovers Bribery, Corruption

Federal authorities have arrested ten people for fraud and corruption after a two-year covert investigation. Four of those individuals are DI assistant basketball coaches. U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim alleges that four assistant coaches—Emanuel Richardson (Arizona), Chuck Person (Auburn),

Lamont Evans (Oklahoma State) and Tony Bland (USC)—took cash bribes in order to steer elite basketball players, who were NBA bound, toward certain sports agents, financial advisors, and apparel companies. Each coach has been charged with bribery conspiracy, solicitation of bribes, honest services fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and Travel Act conspiracy. They all are facing a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison. Schools have already taken action. Arizona suspended Richardson and relieved him of all duties. Auburn suspended

Person without pay. Oklahoma State suspended Richardson and relieved him of all duties. USC placed Bland on administrative leave and hired a former FBI director to conduct an internal investigation. Authorities also allege that James Gatto, the director of global marketing for Adidas Basketball; Merl Code, a former player for Clemson who is now affiliated with Adidas; and Munish Snood, the founder of Princeton Capital—an investment service firm that manages professional athletes’ money, paid $100,000 at the request of a Louisville assistant coach to freshman Brian Bowen to get him to commit to Louisville. The money also ensured that Bowen would have Snood manage his money and sign with Adidas upon entering the NBA. Bowen has been suspended indefinitely. Louisville coach Rick Pitino was fired following the FBI’s report. The investigation is ongoing and the allegations brought forth by the federal authorities constitute violations of NCAA bylaws.

Question: The GW’s volleyball program has scheduled an alumni game for later this month. If a student-athlete competes in this alumni game and does NOT compete at all for the remainder of the season, does she utilize a season of competition? Remember you must cite the Bylaw to get points.

A. Yes.

B. No, provided the event is counted as one of the institution’s maximum number of contests or dates of competition as permitted in the particular sport per Bylaw 17.

C. No, because student-athletes are allowed to compete in alumni games without them counting towards their season of competition.
