2017 COLLEGE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome college hoops fans to our resurgent destination. Since the last time Buffalo hosted

this tournament in 2014, the city has undergone a once-in-a-lifetime transformation, featuring a revitalized waterfront, restored architecture, renewed neighborhoods and an influx of new attractions, hotels, restaurants, breweries and distilleries. We hope you have the time in between games to take a look around and experience all these wonderful changes in our city.

If you’re looking for information on where to stay, play, shop and

Visit the home of the Original Chicken Wing — THE ANCHOR BAR (1047 Main St. • anchorbar.com) — where you can eat wings and see an eclectic array of motorcycles and memorabilia.

The Elmwood Village is home to two iconic Buffalo taverns — COLE’S (1104 Elmwood Ave. • colesbuffalo.com) where wings are standard, Sicilian (Italian and Ceasar dressings with Parmesan cheese) and barbecue. Beer selections are outstanding.

MACKY’S ESSEX STREET PUB (530 Rhode Island St. • essexstreetpub.com) dry rubs, smokes and fries the wings before serving with a smoked bourbon barbecue.

In the Black Rock neighborhood the classic SPORTSMENS TAVERN (326 Amherst St. • sportsmenstavern.com) is known for its live music and Kyle Style wings “extreme but tasty barbecue” and Greg Wings, char-grilled “hot, but not too spicy.”

DUFF’S FAMOUS WINGS has five locations (duffswings.com). Listed on the menus sauce chart, “medium is hot,” “medium hot is very hot” and “hot is very, very hot.”

South Buffalo’s NINE-ELEVEN TAVERN (9 Bloomfield St. • 825-9939 • Facebook) wings defy description. For years, customers have asked for the 30-year old secret sauce recipe with no luck.

For those who like their suds or something a little stronger, here are some places to enjoy Buffalo’s craft beers and spirits:

• BIG DITCH BREWING (55 E. Huron St. • bigditchbrewing.com) was named Best Craft Brewery in New York by TAP NY.

• You cannot miss the nearby BUFFALO RIVERWORKS complex (359 Ganson St. • buffaloriverworks.com) right next to the giant blue Labatt beer cans.

• To enjoy COMMUNITY BEER WORKS beers, head to the Hydraulic Hearth (716 Swan St., hydraulichearth.com). Saturday mornings features a Bagels & Brooze Brunch.

• RESURGENCE BREWING (1250 Niagara St. • resurgencebrewing.com) is a great place to hang out. They’ll even let you order pizza and wings from Buffalo’s famous LANOVA PIZZERIA (371 W. Ferry • lanova-pizzeria.com).

• THIN MAN BREWERY (492 Elmwood Ave. • thinmanbrewery.com) has superb beer as well as food by chef Bruce Wieszala.

For those who like their cocktails, here are some places to enjoy Buffalo’s booze:

Celebrating 140 years, the Buffalo Zoo features a wide variety of animal exhibits.

Founded in 1862, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (1285 Elmwood Ave. • albrightknox.org) is one of the oldest public art institutions in the country.

The gem of Buffalo’s Olmsted Parks (bfloparks.org) is the Buffalo Botanical Gardens (2655 South Park Ave. • buffalogardens.com). The conservatory opened in 1900 and was the third largest public greenhouse in the United States.

Last but not least, celebrating its 100th year, the Buffalo’s Colored Musicians Club (145 Broadaway • cmctheclub.com) is the oldest continuously run African American musicians club in the United States.

A Few Fun Diversions

Buffalo has a rich Irish immigrant history, including the old First Ward, located a few blocks away from the KeyBank Center and into South Buffalo.

Today the area along Ohio Street in the old First Ward is being rejuvenated.

Just about every bar and restaurant in the area will host St. Patty’s parties.
