Chris Facca, age 39Hall of Fame inductee, Hilltops teams

Chris Facca was a golfer. He played baseball. His biggest impact in sports was making sure others stayed in the game, working as a trainer and athletic therapist.

Facca is enshrined in the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame with the 2001, ’02 and ’03 Saskatoon Hill-tops, who won the Canadian junior title for three consecutive years.

His reach included Kinsmen Minor Football, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team and the 2010 world junior hockey championship.

Other sports that Facca worked with included bowling, gymnas-tics, soccer and track and field.

Barry Mooney, 1942-2017, age 74Hall of Fame inductee, Hilltops team

Barry Mooney was the Senior Watch at Nutana Collegiate in 1959-60, the year the school celebrated its 50th year — the oldest high school in Saskatoon.

Mooney competed in football, basketball and track and field in Nutana. When he was in Grade 10, the football team coached by Clarence Garvie won the city title and was runner-up to the Notre Dame Hounds in the provincial final at Regina’s Taylor Field.

Mooney was the city high school champion in senior high jump in 1960 and second in provincials. He joined the Saskatoon Hilltops that fall and played on the team for four years, first as a line-backer then at tackle. He was an all-star in the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Junior Football League and captain of the Hilltops in 1963.

After the Hilltops, he played for the University of Saskatchewan Hus-kies for a year, then returned to the Hilltops to be an assistant coach for two years, in 1967 and ’68. The Hilltops won the Cana-dian title in 1967. Mooney was an assistant with the Huskies in 1969 and ’70.

As a teacher at Walter Murray Collegiate, he coached the Marauders for 15 years. A highlight basketball season for Murray was 1967-68 when the Marauders upset league champion Bedford

Road in the northern final and was runner-up to Regina Luther in the provincial championship.

Mooney enjoyed carving. His work featuring carved geese and miniature canoes was shown at James Art Studio in Saskatoon.

Don Hibbert, 1938-2017, age 79Hall of Fame inductee, Hilltops team

Don Hibbert played three seasons for the Saska-toon Hilltops as offensive end, also known as flanker. Hibbert joined the team in 1956 when a scoring rule for football changed, with a touchdown worth six points instead of five.

Hibbert scored a touchdown in 1957 when the Hilltops defeated the Weston Wildcats in the league semifinal. In 1958, his final season, the Hilltops went 13-0 and won the Canadian junior title, defeating the host Notre Dame de Grace Maple Leafs 18-14 in the final in Montreal.

When he was a student in Nutana Collegiate, Hibbert won the city high school championship in track and field in the junior boys 100 yards, 220 yards and discus. He was third in the senior boys 220 at provincials. Hibbert went on to be a teacher and administrator with the Saskatoon Public School Board and coached track and field.

“I knew Phil Taylor when I was in Ice Cycles/Capades. At that point he was stage manager. I saw Phil stilt skate in Vancou-ver at the Rotary Ice Carnival in the early to middle ’40s. He must have done some figure skating to be able to coach his daughter to become world champion. That was a magnificent achievement as a coach.”

— Ron Vincent, Victoria, B.C.historian, skating coach

“I looked at the speed skating results of the world and Eu-ropean championships, as published in a results book by the ISU in 1967, for the period from the ‘beginning’ to World War I (1889-1915). Phil Taylor is not found in any of them. He was basically a professional from an early age, so the likelihood of him skating in an ISU championship is remote.”

— Ben Wright, United Statesarchivist International Skating Union,

inductee World Figure Skating Hall of Fame

“I don’t have any records of Philip Taylor in our speed skating.“Figure skaters and speed skaters did skate in many small

town carnivals and he may have done a few races. However, we do not have any recorded championships as Saskatchewan championships until early 1930s.

“The only time he uses speed skates in any pictures is while jumping, needed for speed. Our first records for barrel jump-ers is Clarence Downey and Eddie Lotochinski in 1936.”

— Henrietta Goplen, Saskatoonspeed skating historian, inductee Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame
