GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION

THE SCHOOL DAYYour son should be at school by 08:25. Pupils can arrive from 07:45 and breakfast can be purchased by day pupils from 07:45 until 08:15 in the Chadwick Centre dining room.

Boys must register and be in their Houses by 08:30. Every morning from 08:30 - 09:00 the boys will have a programme of House time, assembly or a Chapel service. We also deliver a structured programme of PSHE during this time. Lessons start at 09:00 and finish at 16:20. Please note, that your son may be involved in early morning and/or after-school practices, or extra-curricular activities, but he will be notified of the timings for these in advance.

HOUSE ROOMThe House system is very important to the boys at Berkhamsted and the House room quickly becomes a central part of their school life. Lockers are provided and it is important that the boys use them for storage of

books, PE kit and any other valuables and equipment. On their first day boys will be provided with a PIN protected padlock (that comes with a spare key to be left with the Head of House for emergencies); the cost will be added to your school bill.

CHEF’S PANTRY AND SCHOOL BOUNDSThere are water dispensers around the school that boys can use to refill their water bottles. At morning break the boys can purchase snacks and drinks from the ‘Chef ’s Pantry’ in the Chadwick Centre dining room. Boys in Year 10 and below are not allowed off site at any time during the school day unless they are walking to the games field. If there is a need for them to go into town, a letter is needed from home.

THE END OF THE DAYThe school day finishes at 16:20, however, the time of collection can vary owing to the variety of after school activities hosted on site. Please make sure your son is clear over ‘pick-up’ times and inform his Head of House

if he is to remain on site for longer than usual. Boys are required to travel home in full school uniform unless they are going home directly from the Playing Fields. There is no organised prep at the School, but there is always a room where he can sit down and work, or he may choose to stay in the House room. In addition, the Library is available until 18:00 Monday to Thursday and until 17:00 on Friday. Parents are, for safety reasons, not allowed to drive their vehicles onto any part of the School when dropping/collecting their children. As the School is locked up at 18:30, if your son is on a fixture/trip which is due back after this time, could you please ensure that he has his bags with him. If you would like more details about day boarding or flexi-boarding, please contact Incents Boarding House on 01442 358017.

If for any reason, you are running late, please contact the School Office on 01442 358000 until 17:30, and 01442 358108 Library until 18:00.

BELONGINGSPlease ensure all belongings are clearly labelled, including all items of uniform. Boys are advised to leave any valuable items at home. All belongings must be kept in locked lockers.

GAMESBoys who are off games should report to the PE office between 08:15 and 08:45 and show their note to a member of the PE Department or have an e-mail sent through to [email protected] before 08:45 as well as a copy to their Head of House.

Boys are encouraged to take part in some kind of activity; the Department attempts to accommodate the medical needs of boys wherever possible. They are expected to bring their kit at all times as they may be used as referees, observers, and coaches in some other role.

Off games staff will check pupils have been added to the off games register on SOCS. If they are not on the register or a pupil is missing who is on the register, then an e-mail must be sent to their Head of House as well as [email protected].

The PE department should be made aware of any long term injuries via an e-mail from parents at the start of every half term. Off games staff will then be notified and a note need not be shown every time. Long term, where possible, should be accompanied by a medical note.

All boys who need to attend the off games room must have sufficient work to keep them busy for the full period of time.

Boys must remain in the off games room for the full duration. Under no circumstances should they be allowed to work somewhere else unsupervised. This includes the library, art block and computer rooms.

ABSENCES FROM SCHOOLIf for any reason your son is absent from school owing to illness, please notify his Head of House either by email or phone, on each day of his absence, ideally before 08:00 or at the latest by 08:30.

If your son is absent for more than three days, please contact his Head of House so that they can arrange for work to be sent home if he is well enough to complete it.

Absence for family holidays for pupils in KS3 and above is not permitted.

ILLNESS DURING THE SCHOOL DAYIn the event that your son feels unwell during the school day he must go to the Medical Centre where the staff will assess his condition and take appropriate action.

REWARDS AND PUNISHMENTPupils are rewarded for good work by our ‘merit’ and ‘commendation’ system. These are awarded by subject teachers and Heads of House either for excellent work, or for notable progress.

When work is unacceptable, students will be asked to repeat it and indeed ‘extra work’ will be given as deemed appropriate. For consistently poor work, our system of ‘order marks’

may well be applied by the subject teacher. This will be passed to the Head of House. Repeated failure to reach the required standard will result in a Friday detention (16:30 to 17:30).

Transgressions of a more serious nature may be punished with a Deputy Head detention or a Saturday detention as sanctioned by the Deputy Head or Head.We very much believe in the reward system rather than the punishment one, but have found the need for both.

HOMEWORK PLANNERAt the start of the year, all boys will be issued with a homework planner. In it, he must record the homework tasks and due date. After each reporting cycle, he will also use the diary to record the targets he has agreed with his tutor. We ask that you sign the diary on a weekly basis. This will be countersigned by your son’s tutor. The diary may also be used as a further means of communication between home and school.

PUPIL REPORTSGrade and Learning reports, based on BLP are shared with Parents throughout the academic year via Parent Portal. Dates of publication are provided within the termly calendars.

PERSONAL INFORMATIONThere are times when a change in circumstances at home or at school will have an effect on your son. We are better placed to support your son if we are aware of such changes. We hope that you will feel comfortable communicating with your son’s Head of House in the interests of your son and trust that we will deal with this information sensitively.

Please also keep us informed of any changes of address, telephone numbers or e-mail addresses. Additionally, if you are away from home for any length of time, please keep us informed as to whom we should contact in the case of an emergency.

UNIFORM AND PE/GAMES KITYou will be issued with a full uniform list. Good quality second-hand items may be bought/sold at the School Second-hand Shop located at 26 Castle Street, Berkhamsted, HP4 2DW.

Our expectation is that boys take pride in their appearance, wearing full school uniform at all times.

MOBILE PHONESMobile phones may be brought into School. However, there are restrictions on their use and the boys must follow the school rules which will be explained to them.

BAD WEATHERThe school rarely closes for bad weather, but in the event of this being necessary, a message will be placed on the school website, parent portal and via our Twitter feeds.

HOUSE SYSTEM2017 - 2018 HEADS OF HOUSEBerkhamsted Boys offers a House System where every individual receives pastoral support and academic guidance. The Houses, which are made up of pupils from different year groups, are the centre of the boys’ lives, giving a sense of belonging and encouraging self-confidence.

The Head of House, with help from House Tutors, takes responsibility for each boy’s social and academic development and is the main

channel of communication between home and school.

Senior boys have the opportunity to take leadership roles in their houses.

Houses are also an arena for competition and co-operation. Sport, Drama and Music naturally provide many opportunities for boys to work together within their houses in addition to fundraising for charities.

BERKHAMSTED SCHOOLS VALUES

MISSIONOur purpose is to help all members of our community be the best they can be by encouraging our pupils to aim high, all grounded by a determination to make positive contributions to society.

Community and heritage lie at the heart of everything we do. Our schools have long been synonymous with their respective communities: we seek to play a leading role in their continued economic, social, cultural and spiritual wellbeing, by being mindful of our responsibility to leave our communities in a better place than we found them. We must all aim to be good ancestors.

VALUESThe importance of the values of aspiration, integrity, courage and service are embodied in our values statements which are applied throughout the school as we encourage pupils to:

AIM HIGH WITH INTEGRITY

BE ADVENTUROUS

SERVE OTHERS

BUILDING LEARNING POWER - BLP

Building Learning Power is a whole-school approach to teaching and learning based on the work of Guy Claxton and the book ‘The Learning Powered School’, which in turn builds on and flows from the ‘growth mind-set’ concept as articulated by Carol Dweck and John Hattie (among others). BLP’s starting point is that the brain is like a muscle in as much as its capacity grows with exercise: in short, learning is learnable. Furthermore, the language we use when talking about learning is significant, and BLP offers a rich but common vocabulary for talking about what learners do, thus allowing pupils to make links between different things they learn, within and beyond the classroom.

WHY ARE WE ADOPTING BUILDING LEARNING POWER AS OUR APPROACH TO TEACHING AND LEARNING?In a world where estimates suggest two-thirds of current pupils will end up working in roles that don’t yet exist, and most of today’s teenagers

may have had between 10-15 different jobs by the time they are 40, BLP encourages teachers to emphasise dispositions (or learning habits) alongside content. In addition, establishing the concept of learnable intelligence will stimulate both an independent and interdependent approach from pupils, who in return will become more resilient and flexible when confronted with difficulty, something that will serve them well as they move through the school and beyond, to Higher Education and the workplace.

WHAT DOES BLP LOOK LIKE?Our 10 chosen dispositions between them represent four areas of development (cognitive, emotional, social and strategic) and are:

PersevereNotice

CollaborateListen

Each disposition is further subdivided to provide opportunities for teachers to provide targeted interventions that help pupils become reflective, independent and interdependent learners.

PUPIL WELLBEING

Berkhamsted Schools Group believes that each of us has the power to fulfil our own potential.

The Counselling and Coaching Team provide a safe, confidential environment for the pupils to explore their experiences thereby enabling them to begin to understand themselves better and allow them to express and manage difficult feelings without criticism or judgement, and cope with concerns in a positive way.

WHAT THE PUPILS MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW….If you come to speak to someone we will:

• Listen to you, value you and accept you for who you are and be honest with you.

• View the time as ‘your space’ and allow you to choose what you would like to talk about.

• Keep the contents of what we talk about confidential. The contents of the session will not be disclosed to or discussed with parents or staff, unless

you are happy for us to do so. If we believe you or someone else are at risk of harm then we are required to discuss this issue with someone else though we will always endeavour to speak to you first.

• Offer you sessions at a time to suit you, making sure that wherever possible you can come at a time when you will not miss lessons.

WHAT PARENTS MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW….• The counselling and

coaching service exists to provide short-term support for pupils that are happy to come. The School does not, at present, have capacity for long-term support. Pupils are entitled to a maximum of 12 sessions.

• The service is charged for if the pupil is referred by a parent. Full details of the charges are contained in the Counselling Policy which can be found on the School website.

• It is understandable that you might feel worried

about what your child might talk about in the sessions. However, the strict code of professional ethics that we follow includes clauses about confidentiality. The counsellor is there to help your child manage their issues, not judge you or anyone else in your family.

• If further support is needed for your child after 12 sessions, we can provide details of other, external organisations who can offer help.

CHAPLAINCY

Since the school’s formation in 1541 it has had a Christian foundation, and this is as much a part of school tradition and life now as it was 476 years ago. With the presence of two school chapels and two full time chaplaincy staff, the Christian identity of the school underpins much of what goes on.

All students attend one chapel service a week, which look at a variety of issues and, while Christian in their focus, are accessible to those of other faiths and none. Christmas, Easter and Remembrance Day are marked with special services and there is a half termly after school communion service, which is open to anyone in the school community.

Social action and spiritual development are vital for healthy individuals and strong communities, we aim to raise questions, stimulate debate and give opportunities for students to contribute and reflect. The chaplaincy staff are available as an extra

layer of pastoral care to students, running lunchtime drop in clubs, extra-curricular Christian Unions and the opportunity for Confirmation classes, if that is something students wish to pursue.

MEDICATION IN SCHOOL

Should your child require medication during the school day, please be aware of the following procedure:

• In order for the medication to be given the Parent/Guardian should complete a consent to medicines to be given in school form. These are available on the parent portal and also via the school medical centres.

• All medication should be delivered to the medical centre, clearly labelled and in the original packaging with the student’s name clearly visible and must be accompanied by the completed consent form.

• No medications should be kept on the pupils themselves the exception being inhalers for asthma and adrenaline auto-injectors for anaphylaxis, which are expected to be carried by the pupil at all times. Individual health care plans are sent out by the Nursing department for completion by parents/guardians for these conditions annually.

If the medication is to be taken home after school please remind your child to collect it from the Medical Centre before 16:30 when the department closes.

IMMUNISATIONSPlease ensure the school is up-to-date with your child’s immunisation history and notify us if there are any changes from the form completed when joining Berkhamsted.

If you have any queries regarding medication or any other health issues please telephone one of the Sisters in the appropriate Medical Centre.

CURRICULUM FOR NEW YEAR 7 PUPILSOur curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils experience a broad and balanced education and to provide secure foundations for the future. In the earlier years we try to give pupils experience in as many subjects as possible. As they progress through the school, choices have to be made so that they can reach the depth necessary to achieve their potential at GCSE. At the same time it is important to retain the breadth and balance across the range of curricular areas.

For Years 7 to 9, pupils take the following subjects:In addition two languages are taken. For Year 7 there is an element of choice available and we guarantee you will receive your first choice, regardless of column. One subject will be studied from each of the following two boxes*:

SCHOOL LIBRARY

All students joining us at Berkhamsted in Years 7 and 9 will have a library induction in their first week. During this session, they will be introduced to the print and electronic collections available to them in the library. They will become familiar with the library code of conduct and all the services we provide. The session will also include an orientation activity so that they can find their way around the collections confidently. The library is staffed by qualified librarians who are here to support students through every stage of their learning journey.

LIBRARY CODE OF CONDUCTThe school libraries are places for quiet study and research and it is expected that pupils will…• use other designated areas

for group and discussion work

• not consume food or drink, although a small bottle of water will be permitted

• use computers for work purposes only

• switch off their mobile phones

• tidy their study areas before leaving the library

READINGReading for pleasure is key to academic success. We have a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books in the library. In Year 7, students

begin their reading journey with the Go 4 Gold Reading Award. This is a fun and interactive reading scheme, based on a medal system. Pupils read for their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, and if they persevere throughout the year, they may even achieve a Platinum Award.

The next stop on their reading journey is at the end of the Michaelmas term, since, as part of the Bookbuzz scheme every Year 7 student receives a book from the library as a Christmas present. Throughout the academic year, the library collaborates with academic departments to organise reading activities and to celebrate events such as European Day of Languages, National Poetry Day and World Book Day. For our younger students, we arrange storyteller and author visits to support the curriculum. For all students there is a chance to join Book Group on the co-curricular programme which is run in collaboration with the English department.

RESEARCH SKILLS / PROJECT WORKThe library team works with academic departments to develop students’ research skills through various projects, starting in Year 7 and building on their skills through Years 8 and 9. The libraries provide access to a variety of electronic databases containing reliable and scholarly content on a range of topics to support students with project and course work.

LOANSStudents may borrow 3 items at a time. Loans are for 3 weeks and books can be taken out for longer over the school holidays and renewed as long as the book is not required by another reader.

Library fines We do not charge fines for overdue library books but at the end of each term we do bill for any lost or unreturned items. The charge, which includes an administration cost, is £25 per item.

If the library is contacted within a week of receipt of

the final reminder letter, we will accept a new or second hand copy (in excellent condition) of the book/s lost and the charge will be waived.

Overdue loansBerkhamsted School Library process for overdue loans is as follows:• 3 emails are sent to the

Gmail account of the pupils reminding them of their overdue book/s;

• The 4th reminder in the form of a letter is sent to pupil via their Head of House;

• The Final reminder is a letter sent home to the parents.

Only when the letter has been sent home and books are still outstanding, will the administration charge be added to the end of term bill.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Our core aim is to inspire and engage students across the school to enjoy language learning and to develop their language skills for life. We aim to broaden students’ linguistic and cultural horizons through meaningful, fun and creative learning experiences.

Modern Foreign Languages are really all about learning how to communicate with people. We will teach you language learning skills as you take part in role plays and short conversations, listen to native speakers in recordings, read a variety of different texts, understand instructions, messages, notes or menus and write emails to friends abroad.

Work in Language lessons involves whole class work, pairs, group and individual work. We subscribe to a number of engaging websites to help make our learning more interactive, independent and collaborative. We will often set a wide range of homework tasks and regular vocabulary tests will form part of the students’ learning. At the end of each unit we do a short assessment to

check that students are on track with their learning.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELPA foreign language is a subject that can be a lot of fun, but also requires discipline, consistency and regular exposure. You can help by encouraging your child to spend ten minutes frequently revising new vocabulary and phrases. This is essential if they are to make progress. 'Little and often' is the best rule and honing memorisation skills really makes a difference.

Ensure that your child comes to language lessons properly equipped. Keeping a dictionary at home will greatly assist your child. We recommend that every pupil purchase a Collins or Oxford dictionary in their language(s). Encourage them and help them to enjoy their language learning. Get them to teach you some phrases and practise their dialogues with you. Of course, the best way to practise a language is to spend time in the country!

TOPICS TYPICALLY COVERED IN YEARS 7 TO 9:• The basics of meeting

and greeting in the target language.

• Leisure activities and free time.

• Family and friends.• Holidays at home and

abroad.• Talking about the area

where you live.• Describing your house,

your room, your clothes and music.

• Verb forms and endings in the past, present and future tense.

• Giving lots of opinions!

WHY LEARN LATIN?Book I of the Cambridge Latin Course takes pupils back to AD 79 and the glorious days of ancient Rome. Pompeii was a wealthy resort town and thriving seaport on the Bay of Naples in one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. There was no reason why Pompeii should not have continued to prosper through the next four centuries of the Roman Empire – apart, that is, for one: Pompeii was built in the shadow of one of the world’s largest and most deadly active volcanoes, Mount Vesuvius. Pupils are introduced to both the language and the culture of the Romans in their study of Latin. They meet Caecilius, his wife Metella and the rest

of their household as they live their lives unaware of the danger looming. We see their family visiting the baths, enjoying visits to the theatre and watching the cruel contests in the amphitheatre.

As the course progresses pupils build up a strong grasp of Latin and after even a short time they amaze themselves at just how much of the Latin language they can translate.

Did you know that 40% of the English language derives from Latin and that 90% of our more sophisticated vocabulary derives from Latin and Greek? Latin is a key to unlocking our more sophisticated language. Thus, Latin words, like servus (slave), iuvenis (young man), senex (old man) and puer (boy), give us English words like servile, juvenile, senile and puerile.

Latin …..• strengthens basic English

skills in vocabulary and reading, which leads to improved writing in many

subjects. • improves confidence

in communication and comprehension skills.

• increases cultural awareness and enables an understanding of our cultural heritage.

• encourages critical and logical thinking.

• introduces students to a rich source of mythology, literature and history.

The Cambridge Latin Course is supported by an innovative and interactive E-Learning program, which can be accessed from home and at school. This enhances the whole learning experience and even makes homework fun to do.

Year 7 Latin pupils will have the opportunity to go on the school’s successful annual trip to Rome, Pompeii and Herculaneum. This trip really brings the course alive and pupils come home with a real understanding of life in Pompeii.

School motto: virtus laudata crescit (virtue increases with praise)

CAREERS

CAREERS PROVISION AT BERKHAMSTED SENIOR SCHOOLS

At Berkhamsted, we think it is very important to give students time and space to explore the path they might want to take in the future. As such, we provide them with a variety of activities that allows them to consider both the world of work and their own potential.

FAST TOMATO & KUDOS (Year 8 & 9)In both years 8 & 9, students complete career profiles in PSHE. They work through responsive, online questionnaires to give them some ideas about career paths that they may be interested in and to prompt discussion and further research.

JUNIOR APPRENTICE (Year 9)In Year 9 all students take part in a Junior Apprentice day. Based at school, students are put into Apprentice style teams and have to launch a new product or

service of their choice. They spend the morning taking part in workshops to give them an insight into the concerns of a new business – from marketing to technology to business ethics. In the afternoon each team completes a ‘pitch’ to a panel of judges and prizes are awarded for the most innovative new company.

CAREERS CONFERENCE (Year 10)In Year 10 all students attend a conference where over 40 speakers come in to introduce them to specific industries. Students attend several talks on careers as wide as Finance, Medicine and Politics as well as taking part in workshops on interview skills and networking. All students then attend a talk from a University Admissions Team, who give them information about what they should be doing to prepare for university entry.

UNIVERSITY VISIT (Year 10)A group of Year 10s every year, are taken for a day at a Russell Group university

where they will meet students, go on tours and have a lecture from the university admissions people. For many this will be the first time they have got a sense of what university is like.

MORRISBY (Year 11)All students in Year 11 undergo Morrisby Profiling. This is a complex and detailed look at the strengths and inclinations of each individual student. At the end of this a thorough profile is created for each student with information about what careers might interest them.

EXTERNAL CAREERS INTERVIEWS (Year 11)After completing their Morrisby profiles, Year 11 meet for 45 minutes with an external and specialist careers advisor one on one. They help with ideas about Sixth Form as well as options that students might want to pursue after they leave school.

OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

A LEVEL OPTIONS MEETINGS Meetings with the internal careers team about which A Level options may suit them.

MAILING LISTS Students can sign up for a number of mailing lists where they are sent information about subjects, open days, and external courses that may help them make decisions about their career.

OXBRIDGE MEETINGS Students with an interest in going to Oxbridge are encouraged to meet with the careers team at some point during their GCSE courses to discuss this option and how to pursue it.

EXTRA MUSIC TUITION

At Berkhamsted the opportunities we provide for your son to start or continue individual instrumental, music theory or singing lessons are varied.

Individual music lessons are available to all students in the Senior School and Sixth Form in a range of subjects including strings, woodwind and brass instruments as well as singing, harp, piano, organ, guitar and drum kit. Lessons are 40 minutes in length and are taught on a rotational basis throughout the school day by a team of experienced

and high quality peripatetic teachers. Lessons for pupils in the Sixth Form are taught at times of mutual convenience (usually in study periods or at lunchtimes). Small group Theory of Music lessons are also available and these usually take place after school or during lunchtime.

Students will have the opportunity to work towards a range of examinations including those validated by ABRSM, Trinity College London, RGT and RockSchool. From Grade 6 upwards, grades from all

exam boards are accredited by UCAS to support pupils’ applications to university.

The music department is also keen to support all our new pupils who are learning privately or who play/sing outside and involve them in our school ensembles and activities. These are offered in partnership with Berkhamsted Girls.

Fees for all music lessons can be found on the fees sheet on the school website.

If you have any queries please contact Mrs Nathalie Seymour (Performing Arts Co-ordinator) on 01442 358175 or [email protected].

EXTRA SPEECH AND DRAMA TUITION

Berkhamsted Boys offers opportunities for your son to start or continue Speech and Drama lessons at Berkhamsted School.

Speech and Drama lessons are available to all students in the Senior School and Sixth Form. This specialist teaching appeals not only to those students who are interested in drama, but also aims to develop confidence and communication skills.

Classes are taught either individually or in small groups (40 minutes with 2 to 4 pupils). Lessons for pupils in:

• Years 7 to 9 are taught during the school day on a rotational basis through each term, so that students do not miss the same period/subject every week.

• Years 10 to 13 are usually taught at a fixed weekly time of mutual convenience; in study periods, during lunchtime or before/after school.

Students will have the choice of working towards a range of examinations including acting, devised performance, mime, musical theatre, public speaking and the speaking of verse and prose. Please note that the higher grades of most solo and pair exams are nationally accredited, providing pupils with a means to earn additional UCAS points for their applications to university. Examinations are scheduled across a weekend at school three times a year (November, March and June). Additional fees are chargeable for these examinations.

Fees for all drama lessons can be found on the fees sheet on the school website.

If you have any queries please contact Mrs Nathalie Seymour (Performing Arts Co-ordinator) on 01442 358175 or [email protected].

CO-CURRICULAR AND ACTIVITIESACADEMIC ENRICHMENTAn education at Berkhamsted is more than just exam results. We aim to equip young people with the wider skills required for a successful and fulfilled life.

Attributes such as leadership, independence, team-working, self-confidence and a spirit of enquiry are developed both through the classroom and our extensive co-curricular programme, operated in conjunction with Berkhamsted Girls.

During their time at school, we expect every pupil will have been given the opportunity to sing, dance, act and compete, while also debating, learning and developing a commitment to service.

Expeditions through either the Combined Cadet Force or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award are designed to increase each pupil’s personal resilience, while lunchtime activities aim to kindle enthusiasm for pursuits beyond the taught curriculum. The cumulative result of this programme is confident,

interesting young people who expect themselves to play a leading role in whichever group, institution or business they join.

We have an active programme of School Trips and Outings, some to support academic studies such as a Latin visit to Rome; or a Biology trip to South Africa; whilst others enhance our co-curricular programme such as a trip to the Alps as part of the Climbing Club.

Clubs and societies are available for pupils to participate in each week. There is always something going on to interest every pupil. Clubs and Societies are advertised at the start of the academic year with over 70 choices available; and are attended throughout term during scheduled times on a Monday afternoon.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

We believe that getting outside and experiencing alternative methods of learning is a vital part of education. This begins at Year 7 in the first week at school, when all boys take part in a Bushcraft experience. In House groups, boys learn how to light a fire from just a spark, linking science theory to practical reality, and then cook lunch using the hot embers. This is a great way to start at a new school and to develop friendships early.

Throughout their senior years and into the Sixth Form, boys may take part in a variety of outdoor activities. This could be by choice as an alternative games option or as part of a House teambuilding event. All our activities are delivered by our own ‘in-house’ Outdoor Education Department, which is also supported on expeditions by other members of staff drawn from within the School’s Group. This means we can offer alternatives to the traditional PE games options, such as orienteering, mountain biking, climbing, high ropes climbing tower and adventure

course. In addition to games, the Outdoor Education Department run a weekly climbing club and expeditions to different parts of the UK and overseas.

A highlight is the annual Year 8 trip to Snowdonia, which includes mountain walking, gorge scrambling and abseiling. The key theme throughout all these activities is about developing independent learning, self-confidence, leadership and teamwork, whilst having fun on the way! We believe it is important that pupils are

able to recognise that taking ‘calculated risk’ is acceptable and sometimes you just have to ‘go for it’.

HIGH ROPESThroughout their time in the school the boys will get the opportunity to test their physical and mental strength through various activities run on the School High Ropes Course. During after school house social events, boys might find themselves scaling a 10m wall or taking on the Gladiator Challenge. During Games in Years 9 to 11 boys have the option to

choose Outdoor Pursuits for a term where they may find themselves journeying through the trees on the Adventure Park, abseil off a platform 10m above the floor, test their nerve on the leap of faith or zip through the air on a cable 7m above the floor. All activities are run on the school site by the Outdoor Education Department.

CLIMBING CLUBThe climbing club runs after school at a local indoor climbing wall and on our own climbing tower during the

summer months. Members of the club climb every Monday after School until 19:00 and during the year enter teams in national competitions. In order to broaden their climbing experience and to get outdoors on real rock, the climbing club run annual trips to the Peak District, Dorset sea cliffs, Croatia and Spain.

SKI TRIPEvery other February Half Term the Senior Schools take a joint Ski trip to the slopes of the Italian Alps. The boys have two ski lessons a day; grouped by ability everyone has the

chance to develop their skills over the week, whether they are complete snowsport novices or have been skiing their whole life! Boys also have the opportunity to ski outside of their lessons supervised by one of the school’s qualified ski leaders. The fun doesn’t stop once the slopes close, with an action packed programme of evening activities including ice skating, night skiing and the ever popular quiz night. The ski trip always proves to be a popular and enjoyable experience.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award scheme is the world’s leading achievement award for young people and is highly regarded amongst employers. Boys at Berkhamsted can enter the scheme from Year 9. Registration at the Bronze level is the start and we aim for pupils to have completed the award before the end of Year 10.

During Year 11 we offer the Silver award. However, we recognise how busy life is at this time and we do allow pupils to focus on academics and instead to register for Gold as a direct entrant at age sixteen. This allows pupils more time to complete the sections, residential activity and expeditions required to achieve the Gold Award, creating the conditions for them to be able to finish Gold.

All pupils who complete the Gold Award before the end of Year 13 are to be placed on the School’s honours board and invited to the Black Tie Dinner, in celebration of their achievement.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD COMBINED CADET FORCE

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) endeavours to help young people develop and reach their full potential by fostering youth leadership and taking part in challenging, adventurous and fun activities. The Armed Forces do provide support to some of our training and funding, however the CCF is not a recruiting organisation. Having close links to the Armed Forces allows cadets to access some unique environments and gain an excellent insight into parts of military life.

Cadets learn various skills, such as first aid, map/compass work and camouflage and concealment. The cadets also develop an understanding of the importance of equipment care. The skill of washing clothes by hand and the use of an iron is an important skill for looking smart on parade!

Overall, the CCF is about fun and doing exciting things whilst also recognising the importance of self-discipline and service.

Boys can choose to join the CCF from Year 9 and membership is on a voluntary basis. The CCF parade every Wednesday after school and run a number of camps throughout the year. In addition to the School run camps, cadets may also apply to attend a wide variety of courses run by the military services; the variety of courses on offer is too long to list but offers everything from becoming a powerboat instructor to a glider pilot!

DEPOSITSAcceptance DepositThe acceptance deposit payable on acceptance of a place is £1500.00. Unless otherwise stated in the Terms & Conditions, this amount is refunded to you in two parts:• £1000.00 will be deducted

from the first term’s invoice when your child joins the school.

• £500.00 will be deducted from a final invoice which will be raised after your child has left the school.

Please note, this is not the final termly invoice you receive, but an additional invoice taking into account any final costs not previously billed.

Overseas DepositThe overseas deposit is payable for overseas students who are accepting a place at one of the school’s boarding houses. When added to the £1500.00 acceptance deposit, the deposits make up the cost of a full term’s tuition and boarding fees. Unless otherwise stated in the Terms & Conditions, this amount is

refunded to you in two parts:

• 50% will be deducted from the first term’s invoice when your child joins the school.

• 50% will be deducted from the final invoice mentioned above.

FEE PAYMENTWhen joining the school, the first term’s invoice is due 1 month before the start of term, on the 1st working day of August. The invoice will be sent to you 2-3 weeks in advance of this date. This invoice will include the appropriate deduction of deposits paid, as above.

After the first term, payment of each invoice is due on the first day of the term it relates to. Tuition fees are invoiced termly, alongside any additional charges for clubs, activities, trips and other items. You will receive a copy of the invoice 2-3 weeks before the due date.

Please Note – The school does not accept payment by cash for any deposits or tuition fee invoices.

Direct DebitPaying by direct debit is the School’s preferred payment method for the termly invoices. To ensure that we comply with the direct debit scheme rules, the invoice for each term will be sent out a minimum of 10 days before the start of term. To confirm you are set up for payment by direct debit, a short message will be displayed at the bottom of the invoice. The full balance will then be collected on the due date of the invoice. If you wish to pay by direct debit, please return the completed form to the school at least 1 month before the first payment will be taken. This ensures enough processing time through both the school and the banks’ systems. Please leave the Parent Reference field blank, as this will be filled in by the Finance Department.

Pay Now - Sage PayIf you have not set up a direct debit instruction with the school, you will notice a “Pay Now” button on your invoice. This button provides a secure link to an online payment

FINANCIAL MATTERS

portal which will allow you to make a debit or credit card payment for the total amount payable. Once the link has opened, please always check that the website is secure. This is usually signified by a green padlock in the search bar of your internet browser.

Debit or Credit Card PaymentThe school also accepts payment by debit or credit card over the phone. To do this, please call the Finance Department on 01442 358009 and your payment can be processed over the phone. Please note that, when paying over the phone with a credit card a charge equivalent to 1.5% of the total amount will be added to the payment. In order to keep transaction fees to a minimum the school does not accept payment by American Express.

Bank TransferIf you wish to make payment by bank transfer, the school’s bank account details are as follows:

Bank: Nat West Account Number: 06607578 Sort Code: 60-02-21 SWIFT Code: NWBKGB2L IBAN Number: GB64 NWBK 6002 2106 6075 78

Please ensure that your payment reference includes the Account Reference found on the invoice, as this allows us to quickly and easily identify your payment.

FEES IN ADVANCE SCHEMEThe school operates a Fees in Advance scheme, which allows tuition fees for a pupil to be paid for between 1 and 5 years up front. The school then holds these funds and deducts an equal amount from each termly invoice across the period paid for. A small termly discount is also offered as part of the scheme. For more information on the scheme, please contact Sharon Mead at [email protected]. Please note that there is limited availability to the scheme and it is not always open for new applications.

OTHER FINANCIAL MATTERS

SCHOOL FEE REMISSION SCHEMEIf a pupil is absent through illness or injury for at least 5 consecutive days, a claim can be made to recover the cost of the tuition fees for this period. The claim form can be found on the parent portal in the Documents & Files section. The form is called ‘Aon School Fees Remission Claim Form’ and is in the Terms and Conditions and Fees folder. Once completed, please forward this form to the School’s finance department where an authorised member of staff will sign off the claim before sending it on to the insurers. Depending on the details provided, claims are normally settled directly to parents from the insurers.

CHILDCARE VOUCHERSAs per guidelines from HMRC, childcare vouchers can be used for payment of tuition fees until the term that a child turns 5. After this term a child’s education

becomes compulsory and can no longer be described as childcare.

Once a child is 5, childcare vouchers can then only be accepted for payment towards Wrap Around Care (this includes day boarding at the senior schools) or Basecamp sessions. They can be accepted until the end of the academic year that the child turns 15 (in most cases Year 10) or, if the child is registered as disabled, the end of the academic year they turn 16.

FEES IN LIEU OF NOTICEIf a pupil is withdrawn from the school or acceptance of a place is cancelled with less than one full term’s notice, the fees for the upcoming term are still due for payment. The details of this policy can be found within the Terms and Conditions in clause 9.

EXAMINATION FEESThe fees for entering public examinations will be recharged to parents on the termly bills, as will the costs of any resitting of exams.

TRIPS AND EXPEDITIONSFor curricular trips, the organising staff member will contact parents with information relating to the trip; including whether there will be any charge for the trip.Similarly, for any co-curricular trips, the organising staff member will give information to parents in the same way. However, all costs relating to co-curricular trips will be charged back to parents. The cost of any trips will usually be included on the termly invoices, unless otherwise requested by the organising staff member.

UNRETURNED ITEMS CHARGEWhere returnable items of school property (such as library books or textbooks) are not given back to the school, parents will be charged to cover the replacement of the item. Any replacement charges will be included on the termly invoices.

THE BERKHAMSTED-SOUTH AFRICA LINK

In August 2004, Link Community Development brought together Sandi Senior Secondary School and Berkhamsted School. At the same time, Ntsundwane Junior Secondary School linked with Berkhamsted Prep. The aims of the link are:• To develop a friendship• To broaden our horizons• To learn from each other

THE SCHOOLSBoth schools are co-educational, rural schools in the Ngqeleni District of the Eastern Cape, formerly the Transkei. The nearest town is Mthatha. Sandi SSS was established in 1995 and has about 870 pupils (‘learners’), studying grades 10-12. Their ages vary due to some coming later to education and the necessity to pass a grade before moving to the next. The native language of the pupils is Xhosa and all pupils learn English. Ntsundwane JSS was established in 1929 and has pupils from Reception to Grade 9.

THE LINKThe friendship between the schools has grown from strength to strength. There are three aspects to the friendship:• Communication by letters,

cards, and e-mail• Visits to and from England

and South Africa• Special projects such as

the Sandi Bursary

THE BURSARYThanks to support from the Berkhamsted School community, we have successfully raised funds for five Sandi pupils thus far to attend Walter Sisulu University in Mthatata and undertake studies to become teachers. Our first two graduates, Phelisa Khalazani and Asabonga Godlo are both employed - Asabonga at Sandi and Phelisa at a nearby school. Two further students Sivuyile Fodo and Luvuyo Juliwe have just completed their studies at the time of writing. Our latest bursary student Aphelele Nomandela is in the final year of her studies. We plan to continue this sustainable initiative and

are always looking for other ways of supporting the two schools.

THE SANDI 24 CLUBWhat it means:• The Sandi 24 Club was set

up in 2011 • The club has a maximum

of 300 members and, when fully subscribed, generates approximately £6,300 per annum (over a quarter of our annual fundraising target)

• As a member, you sign up to donate £24 per year (only £2 per month), or multiples of that. In exchange, you will be kept up to date with news of our link and be included in a monthly prize draw where you can win anywhere between £25 and £500 (please see the rules for details)

For further information on how to join and the terms and conditions about the South Africa Link please click here.
