Silver Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

Piers Reilly, Omar Essalfie-Quaye, Rohit Gurung, Alex Pastalides and Zain Chaughley are the first in a hopefully long line of successful silver participants after completing their qualifying expedition in the Peak District. The boys had the best weather to complete their 3 day walking expedition, taking in Monsal Head, Mam Tor and the Hope Val-ley. The boys learnt valuable skills such as being self sufficient, leadership, resilience and teamwork in planning and executing their independent trek. Deputy Head Boy Piers Reilly commented that ‘ it was a really rewarding experi-ence and something that employers and universities hold in high regard...I fully recommend that people take the opportunity and do it...’ Well done for all your hard efforts - Mr Fleming

School Prefects - written by Oliver Gold 10U

Fear. Opportunity. Excitement. Hope. A few of the words used by several of the forty two, year 10 students who applied for the new position of prefect. Last month, the word was put out to the year that the opportunity to become a prefect was up for grabs for ten hardworking, resourceful and disciplined pupils. Each student looking to earn a position had to write Mr Ali (Deputy Head Teacher) an application letter informing him why they deserve the role and what they will do with the new found power. Once Mr Ali had read all the applications (through the good and the bad), he reduced the list down to twenty two. These 22 applicants were then invited to an interview with Mr Ali, Ms Wickins (current Head of year 10) and Mr Laird (future Head of year 10). The interviews lasted a week, and almost all students came out saying it was perhaps the most gruelling experience they have ever been through. Talk about a taste of reality! After the interviews, Mr Ali, along with the advice of teachers, carefully narrowed down the list to twelve applicants. He claimed he could not reduce the list to ten any further, as all were equally as good, but we suspect he just wanted more of us on his prefect team! Prefects are a new phenomena in Christ’s College and will hopefully benefit both the students and school in terms of improve-ment. Usually, the word ‘prefect’ is synonymous with discipline, which typically makes the role disliked by younger students. But in fact, the intention is to also support the community, provide a better image for the school and help students. Later this week, we will be meeting with Mr Ali to discuss our specific roles within the school and what we would like to do to make Christ’s College a better environment to work in. This innovation created by Mr Ali should hopefully result in a positive step forward for the school.

Year 9 Geographers visit the Olympic Park

30 year 9 students went to the Olympic Park on Monday to look at sustainable development, tourism and urban regeneration. On the journey they were entertained by some tricky riddles and activities about the tube network. All were brilliantly behaved with specific commendation to the prize winners: Marvin, Sam Hamerton, Dylan P, Amir, Ali Z and Keanu. Great fun was had by all!

Year 10 History Trip/Hill Walk - Southern Snowdonia

Six year 10 boys travelled with Mr. Futter and Mr. Nalewajko to the Welsh coast on Cardigan Bay for a fantastic mixture of mountains and seaside, with a bit of history thrown in for good measure. En route we stopped off at the Edgehill battle site and memorial, the Beaudesert motte and bailey at Henley in Arden and the eye opening Ironbridge Gorge. On arrival at Borth YHA there was time for a bit of sea swimming, with the beach literally across the road from the hostel!

Next day was definitely not swimming weather, with a rapidly increasing cloud cover turning to rain. Nonetheless our brave band shouldered rucksacks and headed onto Plynlimon (2,468 feet high) from the scenic Nant y Moch reservoir. Despite the upper slopes being shrouded in mist we successfully reached the trig point on the summit. On the descent we managed a quick detour to locate the source of the river Wye and then it was back to the hostel for hot showers and a sumptuous evening meal.

Next day by contrast was sunny and clear as we headed off to tackle the daunting Cadair Idris – 2,927 feet and one of the iconic mountains of Snowdonia. A pleasant breeze helped as we ascended the beautiful Minffordd path, with the more energetic deciding to drop down and investigate lovely Llyn (lake) Cau. A high ridge traverse above the lake brought us to the summit trig point, where we were rewarded with fantastic views out to sea and also across the Welsh mountains including Snowdon itself. After a leisurely descent to the minibus it was back to the hostel and a welcome dip in the sea before showers and supper.

The trip was rounded off a wonderful return journey crossing the Devil’s Bridge mountain road via the scenic Elan Valley reservoirs followed by visits to impressive Goodrich Castle and the peaceful seclusion of the Hailes Abbey ruins.

It is worth mentioning that hostel staff and other hostel users were most im-pressed by the behaviour of our boys, which certainly contributed to a suc-cessful and superbly enjoyable history hill walk.

English Department reminder for Year 9

A reminder to all Year 9s that they need to buy a copy of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (Penguin Classics edition) in time for the start of the new academic year in September. The book is available from Amazon for around £5.50, but cheaper, used versions are also available.

Economics Conference

The Key note speaker at the Rethinking Economics Conference 2014 held this year at University College London (UCL) was Lord Adair Turner. He was the chairman of the Financial Services Authority during the financial crisis from 2008 up to its abolition in March 2013. More than anyone else he has been in at the deep end trying to balance the theory versus the practice of economics.

There were over two hundred students and lecturers at the

weekend conference all eager to rethink ways of teaching

and learning economics. All were concerned that another

“ Great Recession, “ should not happen again. At least not

just yet! Other speakers included : Will Hutton (Oxford)

author of “ Them and Us : Changing Britain –Why We Need a

Fair Society”, Paul Ormerod (UCL)author of “The Death of

Economics”, Tony Lawson (Cambridge) author of “Economics

and Reality” and Ha-Joon Chang (Cambridge) author of

“Economics –The User’s Guide”. This was a great opportunity

to network with university students from around the country

and also discuss with economics lecturers our plans for stud-

ying in university next year.

Sports Week 2014

Sports Week 2014 took place last week, with all pupils from years 7-10 participating in a week of Inter Form Sports Competitions. The timetable included competitions in Football, Table Tennis, Athletics, Basketball and Cricket. Pu-pils once again displayed excellent organisation and leadership skills in organising their teams for the Sports Week tournaments, and displayed usual CCF high levels of competitiveness and sportsmanship. The winners of the week were as follows:

Year 7: Year 8 Year 9 Year 10: 1st - 7A 1st - 8A 1st - 9D 1st - 10U 2nd - 7N 2nd - 8U 2nd - 9A 2nd - 10A 3rd - 7U 3rd - 8D 3rd - 9F 3rd - 10D

Well done to all pupils who took part and made it such a memorable Sports Week 2014!

Have a great summer break and we will see you back on Tuesday 9th September.

Cricket - Barnet Cup Final

Christ's College v Fortismere

Both sides were unbeaten and deserving finalists. Fortismere won the toss and decided to field first. CCF got off to a flying start with Billy Blyghton (41 ret out) hitting 4 boundaries within the first 2 overs. CCF lost wickets at regular intervals; however managed to keep the scoreboard ticking throughout the 20 overs and thanks to William Herbert (24) and Cameron MacLeod. CCF finished on 128/7.

William Herbert clean bowled their opening batsman in his first over, and from then it was a cautious effort from their middle order. Having wickets in hand was always going to be useful for Fortismere, however Dylan Humphyres ripped through the batting line up picking up 3 vital wickets and 2 run outs in his fine spell of bowling. Fortismere struggled to score against our fine bowling attack. They ended up on 89/9 off 20 overs.

CCF won by 39 runs.

Well Done!!
