UNLV CONTINUES RUN AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS... After suffering a hard loss at 18th-ranked Stanford on Saturday, the going does not get any easy for UNLV this week in the Duel In the Desert tournament, hosted by UNLV in the Cox Pa- vilion on Wednesday-Friday. The Lady Rebels will face a pair of teams ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 Poll in their two games in the event, starting with top-ve Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, who made national headlines after snapping Connecticut’s NCAA record 111-game win streak in the 2017 national seminals, come into Wednesday’s contest ranked No.5 by the AP and No. 3 by USA Today/ESPN. Friday sees another tough opponent for UNLV, as the Syracuse Orange come in ranked 22nd in the coaches’ poll. Both teams combined are a perfect 22-0, as each has won their rst 11 contests of the season. The contest against Mississippi State marks the second straight game for the Lady Rebels against a defending NCAA Final Four participant, a rst for UNLV for program history. It will also be the rst time UNLV has faced a NCAA championship nalist since it fell to Georgia 87- 41 on Dec. 28, 1996. Wednesday will be the third meeting all-time between the Lady Rebels and the Bulldogs, with UNLV winning both previous meetings in Las Vegas. The Duel In The Desert is back at UNLV for the rst since the 2013-14 season, and this marks the sixth time the Lady Rebels have hosted the event. This year’s eld is potentially the best-ever, as in addition to Mississippi State and Syracuse in the Rebel Division, the Scarlet Division features No. Oregon and No. 19 Texas A&M, along with Hawaii. HEAD COACHKATHY OLIVIER

When UNLV was searching for its next women’s basketball coach -- a person that could return the proud program to its place

among the nation’s best -- it didn’t have to look far. The school turned to one of its own by hiring former Lady Rebel All-American Kathy Olivier as the eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women’s basketball history on April 22, 2008. The Lady Rebels immediately showed their renewed enthusiasm for their new coach, and the team was the talk of the conference after an inspiring run to the Mountain West Conference Tournament semifi nals as the seven-seed. Olivier’s fi rst recruit to the program, Jamie Smith, would 10 months later became the fi rst-ever Lady Rebel to be named MWC Freshman of the Year. In 2009-10 the Lady Rebels continued their climb back to prominence under Olivier, and posted several impressive upsets, including road wins at Utah and New Mexico and a home victory over eventual Sweet 16 participant San Diego State. Olivier’s best season would come in 2011-12, as UNLV fi nished the campaign with a 22-10 record, an 11-win improvement over the previous year that ranked as the sixth-best in the nation, and the Lady Rebels returned to the postseason for the fi rst time since 2005-06 with a trip to the WNIT. Her most recent squad also recorded a 22-win season (22-11) while receiving an at-large bid to the WNIT. Highlights of the 2016-17 campaign included wins over the SEC (Ole Miss) and the Pac-12 (USC), as well as an 8-1 start to the year and a school-record 12 MW victories (12-6 record). Olivier came to UNLV after serving as head coach at UCLA for 15 years (from May 3, 1993, to March 11, 2008). While head coach of the Bruins she helped produce two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year, a Pac-10 team championship, a Pac-10 Tournament Championship and a trip to the 1999 Elite Eight. The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV, where she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the 1979-80 season. She still ranks on several all-time lists at UNLV, as her career 18.1 ppg average is the second-highest in team history.

UNLV has lost 10 straight games against ranked opponents, with the last win coming over No. 16 George Washington 62-61 on Nov. 30, 2007. All-time the Lady Rebels are 0-5 against the No. 5 team in the Top 25 AP Poll. Mississippi State is also the highest ranked team UNLV has faced in the Cox Pavilion since a 78-68 loss to No. 4 North Carolina on Nov. 22, 2009.

PLAYERS TO WATCH... The Lady Rebels bring back one of the most experienced lineups in the Mountain West, and it all begins with senior Brooke Johnson and junior Nikki Wheatley who will be the starting backcourt for the third straight season (Wheatley received a medical redshirt last season after a knee injury in the 10th game of the year). Johnson currently ranks sixth in the league in scoring with 14.7 points per game while also counting herself among the conference’s leaders in assists (tied 10th - 3.2 per game) and steals (eighth - 1.7 spg), and leads the MW in minutes per game at 35.4. Wheatley meanwhile is fourth in the conference in rebounding with 8.2 per contest, and adds 12.3 points per game (12th). Making a big jump in her second year with the Lady Rebels is junior center Katie Powell, as she is nearly averaging a double-double, with 13.7 points (eighth) and 9.4 rebounds (second) per contest. New to the starting lineup this year is junior forward Jordyn Bell, with 9.8 ppg (22nd) while she also ranks 10th in the league in fi eld goal percentage (45.2%). Through seven games, UNLV is pacing the Mountain West in rebounds (43.7 rpg) and is second in rebound margin (+5.3). LAST TIME OUT... UNLV fell behind 10-0 to start the game and could not fi nd a way to solve 18th-ranked Stan-ford’s (6-4) defensive effort, leading to a 74-33 road loss in Maples Pavilion Saturday afternoon. The 33 points for the Lady Rebels (5-4) were tied for the lowest in school history, as UNLV fi nished the game hitting just 14-of-62 for 22.6%. That included a 3-of-19 performance from three-point range (15.8%), with all three treys coming from Brooke Johnson. The senior guard paced the Lady Rebels with 19 points off 8-of-19 shooting. However, the next highest scorer for UNLV was junior point guard Nikki Wheatley (six points), who suffered a foot injury in the fi nal minute of the fi rst half, and would not return to the contest. After Stanford’s early 10-point lead, Wheatley scored back-to-back layups to bring UNLV within six, and the Lady Rebels would fi nish the fi rst quarter scoring 10 of the fi nal 17 points to make it a 17-10 contest. Stanford took control over the next two quarters by outscoring UNLV 40-10. UNLV was 1-of-20 (5%) from the fl oor in the second quarter, and fi nished with just three-points, a Johnson trey. Stanford meanwhile shot 7-of-12 for 58.3% in the second 10 minutes, and outscored

Johnson eraged 17.5 points per game over the weekend, while Wheatley posted a double-double average of 13 points and 12 rebounds. BROWN LOST FOR THE SEASON... Freshman Kavionnia Brown suffered an ACL injury prior to the Lady Rebel Round-Up, and will be out for the rest of the season. The Albuquerque, N.M. native appeared in three games with one start for UNLV, and dished out six assists while collecting two steals and two points. She played a key role in the Lady Rebels’ big fourth-quarter rally against Portland State (Nov. 10).

4TH-QUARTER COMEBACK ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOK... UNLV has made the NCAA record books in the past for owning two of the largest comebacks in women’s college basketball history, but the Lady Rebels outdid themselves in their season opener night. Down by 21 with just 5:27 left in the game, 72-51, UNLV rallied to claim an 88-80 overtime victory over Portland State on Nov. 10 at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV would use a 19-0 run to make it a one-possesion game, and Brooke Johnson nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to complete a 22-1 run to end the fourth quarter and force overtime. Including the extra period, the Lady Rebs outscored Portland State 37-8 over the fi nal 10 minutes. CHALLENGING THE BEST... One year after undertaking the toughest schedule ever under head coach Kathy Olivier, UNLV managed to top that with this year’s non-conference slate. For the fi rst time in school history, the Lady Rebels will face two defending Final Four teams from a year ago, and in fact, will play them in back-to-back contests. That’s all part of a fi ve-game stretch against teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament. It starts off with road contests at Gonzaga (NCAA 1st Round) and at Stanford (Final Four) on consecutive weekends. The Lady Rebels then return home for a pair of games in the Duel In The Desert, where they will face national championship runner-up Mississippi State and Syracuse (2nd round), who played in the 2016 NCAA title game. To top it off, UNLV’s fi rst conference game will be on the road at Boise State, who reached the NCAA Tournament as well after winning the MW Tournament.

LADY REBELS SIGN TWO IN EARLY PERIOD... UNLV signed Justice Ethridge and Kambrayia Elzy to national letters of intent to play for the Lady Rebels starting in the fall of 2018-19. Ethridge, a 5-9 shooting guard, is a Las Vegas native, having started for Centennial High for the past three seasons under celebrated head coach Karen Weitz. The No. 91 recruit in the nation this season according to ESPN, she is a three-time all-state selec-tion, three-time fi rst team all-division. She also earned USA Today All-Nevada honors her fi rst three seasons as well. She has also played under Coach Weitz for the Las Vegas Bulldogs club team. Elzy is a 5-7 point guard from Tulare, California. She has led Mission Oak High to two Cen-tral Section CIF D-3 Championships and state playoff appearances, and averaged 17.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game her junior season. In her three years with the Hawks, she was a three-time all-league, Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County All-Star and Fresno Bee All-Star fi rst team selection. She is also a member of the Fresno Lady Heat club team.
