e angels’ song to the shepherds declaring peace among all people in the second chapter of St. Luke’s Gospel is one of the most beautiful songs in Scripture. It is also one of the most de ant.

Luke begins the chapter with a reminder of who’s in power: Caesar Augustus, one of Rome’s mightiest emperors, and Publius Quirinius, a Roman aristocrat who was the magistrate of both Syria and Judea. Israel was, for all intents and purposes, a defeated nation, oppressed and occupied by the legions of the Roman Empire.

birth of a baby possibly make in light of Roman power, violence, and oppression? But Luke’s narrative can also be seen as audacious, even de ant, springing from his deep faith in the God of Israel. For Luke proclaims that in this child, born in utter vulnerability to poor parents of no account, God is at work to save the world. e whole world. Bethlehem. Judea. Rome. Everything. Everyone. And so Jesus’ birth is heralded by a host of angels to counter the Roman host, and rather than enforce a rule of violence they sing of peace.

De ant hope. Promised peace in a world where peace seems scarce. No wonder this story has spoken to persons of faith through the centuries. For while our circumstances and situations may have changed, our basic human condition has not. We long for peace and we cannot live without hope. When we come together throughout the Christmas season to anticipate and celebrate the birth of Christ, we testify to our deep reliance on the good news of God rst heralded by the angelic host and still proclaimed in word and music today. We also testify to our faith that God’s word continues to create de ant hope and promise peace to a world that needs these things more than ever.

is Advent and Christmas season, we gather around the gospel promise of peace: peace in our world, peace in our communities, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts. Words and music will combine to help us recall that God comes to us in Jesus to celebrate our joys and share our burdens and in all ways and things to bring us peace. For this reason, my prayer for you during this time of year is that amid all fervor of the season you will make time to take advantage of the opportunities for worship, fellowship, and service at Mount Olivet. I don’t invite your participation to add one more thing to your calendar, but rather because I covet for you the blessings I believe you will experience as you take time to hear God’s promises of hope and peace once more. (See worship listings on page 2 and more info throughout this Messenger.)

Our celebrations reach their climax on Christmas Eve, with 10 services at the Minneapolis Campus and six at our West Campus (including the addition of a 7pm service to accommodate the growing numbers of folks who want to worship with us). At each service you can expect a traditional and reverent re-telling of the Christmas story through carols, lessons, exceptional music, and proclamation. Additionally, at the nal service at each campus we will accent the close of the evening with the congregation singing “Silent Night” by candlelight. On Christmas Day there is a re ective and joyful communion service at 10am at the Minneapolis Campus.

I am so grateful to be joined with you in the ministry and witness of Mount Olivet, and I am particularly grateful that we will have such splendid opportunities to come together and bear witness to the light of the world coming to enlighten our lives with the de ant hope and promised peace rst announced by the angels and still sung today. I look forward to seeing you at church.

Advent & Christmas Peace is a consistent theme during the Advent & Christmas seasons, yet can be frustratingly hard to nd amid all the opportunities and obligations of the season. Moreover, just now peace seems increasingly elusive in our communities and the larger world in which we live. Division and debate seem to dominate, driving the hope for peace to the sidelines. All the more reason that we gather around the promise of peace from Jesus, the one heralded as Emmanuel and the Prince of Peace. Across the advent season, we will look for God’s peace in the world, our communities, homes, and in our own hearts. Join us as we discover once again the peace of God that passes all understanding this Christmas season and beyond. See page 2 for Advent & Christmas worship opportunities.

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus“Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; From our sin and fears release us; let us nd our rest in ee.” ELW-#254

We stand on tip-toe once more peering into the darkened stage.

We long for Bethlehem, knowing that Bethlehem has to be more than a place.

To long for Bethlehem, is to long for peace, in so many areas of our world.

To long for Bethlehem is to long for home; home for the homeless, and for those who wander the world with a vacant look in their eyes.

To long for Bethlehem is to pray for the children, who have asked only for a safe place, a love to warm them, and food to nourish their withered bodies.

To long for Bethlehem is to pray that the deep divides that threaten to undo us as a nation might be healed and that we might be part of the healing. ( e rest of the world holds its breath and waits.)

To long for Bethlehem is to be given the courage to face our own incredible personal challenges, whatever they might be. ese challenges are much too great to face alone. It is not just about us.

We need each other, and the One who comes. And so, we pray:

“Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our sins and fears release us, let us nd our rest in ee. Amen.”

While prolonging life and easing su ering on one hand, modern medicine at the same time often has contributed to a lower quality of life. Sharing eye-opening research and deeply touching stories from his own family and patients, Gawande examines medicine’s ultimate limitations and failures – in his own practices as well as others’ – as life draws to a close. A practicing surgeon, Gawande is humble, honest, and humane as he argues convincingly that changes must be made if indeed the goal is not a good death, but a good life – all the way to the very end. Yet the wisdom and experience of spiritual leaders suggests that hardships cannot dampen our deep, abiding contentment. On the contrary, hardships create opportunities to nd joy in our God and in ourselves, and then spread that joy to others. We will explore this idea by reading e Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World about a week-long conversation between Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and studying Paul’s letter to the Philippians – the New Testament’s book of joy. Facilitated by LIZ OTTESON. $20 (includes book). Register by 2/1.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS When I was in seventh grade I joined Mount Olivet with my mother and brother. As a part of Cathedral Choir during my freshman year I experienced the annual Mount Olivet Christmas Concert for the rst time. What a thrill it was, not just being with friends, but being able to sing

the traditional songs of faith that so many in our congregation have come to hear for years. I always look forward to being a part of that concert and seeing which alumni come back for this tradition. Next year, that will be me. Christmas has always been about being around family not just my own, but my church family. Another tradition enjoy involves shopping for families in our greater Minneapolis community who can’t a ord presents for their families. With that tradition I get the chance to experience the “joy in giving.” Since I was young, one of my favorite traditions at home has been receiving a wooden ornament made by my grandfather. I was close with my grandfather and even though he passed away four years ago, the tradition has continued to honor his memory. Due to this tradition, church and my faith, I feel his spirit still with me, especially around Christmas time. at is why my favorite holiday is Christmas. – JULIA STATHOPOULOS

My favorite Christmas tradition at Mount Olivet is the Christmas Concert. I have been in choir since I was a little Cherub with the big red bow tie. e Christmas Concert is so special because it combines all of the choirs. When we all sing “Peace, Peace” at the end it brings the

choirs and congregation together as one. I love when the lights go o and everyone is in the Christmas spirit and we are not thinking about anything else. My favorite Christmas tradition outside of Mount Olivet is traveling to Fargo, North Dakota, to be with family. On Christmas Eve, we gather in the living room around my Grandpa Fercho, who is 92, as he reads the Book of Luke, Chapter 2, from a well-worn Bible that belonged to my Great Grandfather. I really enjoy this tradition because it encompasses my love for my family and my faith. is tradition in uences my faith because recently my grandpa asked if I would take his spot when he is no longer there to read from the Bible on Christmas Eve. Because of my faith, I love to do as much as I can that revolves around my church and family. One thing’s for sure, no Christmas is complete without Grandma June’s cranberry Yifta. – MAXWELL MORTON

My favorite Mount Olivet Christmas tradition is de nitely the annual Christmas Concert. I’m not used to singing with such a large group of people and at the Christmas Concert there are so many of us. I get the chills every time the lights go out at the end of the concert and

we sing “Peace, Peace” along with “Silent Night.” It is really humbling to see my peers and the whole community joining together to praise the Lord at the place we love most. Before joining Mount Olivet, I had never heard of such a large youth choir. It is unbelievable how many teenagers put in time every week to grow in their faith and give back to their church. e love that spreads around Mount Olivet is unlike any other place I’ve experienced and it’s astonishing. I see God through every single person at Mount Olivet and it strengthens my faith every time I go to church. I love singing at the Christmas Concert with all of the people that share a love for their faith and Mount Olivet. It lls me up and humbles me that I am able to be part of such an amazing community. – ANNA LUCAS

WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO MEChristmas time means you are enjoying the snow, looking at Christmas lights, and doing your best to stay warm. Christmas is the time of year when you also take time to slow down and enjoy the things around you. During the days before Christmas, I nd myself spending more time

with my family, just doing things like watching TV and playing board games. It is important to take a break every once in a while to let yourself recover from the crazy schedules we all have. Because Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth, I think it’s the perfect opportunity to spend time with yourself, God, and loved ones. Christmas is an important time of year because everyone is so cheerful and friendly. is is important because even the smallest amount of kindness can seriously a ect the people around you. Even having a small section of the year when everyone is happy and positive can make a big di erence. Being able to witness this kindness and generosity is why Christmas time is so special to me. For me, Christmas is a time when people slow down and enjoy their day. It makes people more cheerful, making it a wonderful time of year. – JACK GLIEDEN

From the excitement of the rst snowfall to the hours spent conversing by the replace, Christmas has always been a treasured time of year for my family and me. As I re ect back on my favorite Christmas memories, a number stick out. Whether it be being ve years old

and utterly convinced that I saw Santa’s sleigh or being overcome with euphoria while singing “Amazing Grace,” each memory weighs of deep value to me. However, beyond the sheer excitement that presents and cookies bring, lays a deeper meaning. My dad once told me a saying that has resonated with me ever since: “Christmas is about presence, not presents.” ough simple, I feel that this saying perfectly encapsulates the true meaning of Christmas. When we celebrate Christmas we are celebrating an incredible act of love; God sending his only son to save us from all our sins. We live in a world brimming with loss and anguish, but can rest assured that, through God, all our wounds will be healed. By serving others, we are being God’s hands and feet and living out our calling to love one another unconditionally. Although it is hard to not get caught up in the materialistic a airs of Christmas, this Christmas and every Christmas I challenge myself and others to be present; present with yourself, present with others, and present with God. – ELISABETH THOMPSON

“Afterward, the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.” – LUKE 2:20

e closing verse to St. Luke’s Christmas story is important. For once the shepherds heard the angelic song of peace and goodwill, they knew they would never be the same. And so after going to Bethlehem to see God’s promises embodied in the babe in a manger, they immediately returned to their elds praising God and sharing the good news they had just seen and heard.

In the same way, we also recognize that when God comes into our lives with the promise of peace and grace, we will never be the same and can only turn to share with others those tidings of goodwill with which we’ve been blessed.

e Christmas o ering is one very important way we share God’s blessings with others. A gift that goes beyond our usual o ering – thank you for ful lling your pledge and capital campaign commitment! – the Christmas o ering allows us to nish the year on strong nancial footing for all our ministries and reach out in love and mercy to those in our community who are most vulnerable.

At home, your generous Christmas gift enables us to • continue our exceptional music programs for all ages,• create an environment where our youth feel loved and accepted and learn

the faith,• take care of our beloved Cathedral of the Pines,• support our Conference & Retreat Center, and in all these ways• share the gospel in word and deed through worship, pastoral care,

education, and outreach.

Beyond the walls of our church, your Christmas o ering enables us to support worthy organizations such as• Community Emergency Service in Minneapolis,• Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP) in Bloomington,• Love INC (in the name of Christ) in Eastern Carver County,• Bountiful Basket food pantry in Victoria, • the Redeemer Lutheran Church youth program in Minneapolis, and more.

rough these partnerships, we extend God’s promises of peace and goodwill throughout our neighborhoods.

It has been nearly two thousand years since the angels rst heralded the good news of Christ’s birth. In all that time and amid the changes of the centuries, one thing has remained: those who hear the angelic announcement of God’s favor can never be the same and are called to share the good news of peace on earth and goodwill to all. Please respond generously this Christmas so that we can extend the love of the Christ child to all.
