The 26th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards
May 2016 Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce 2
Congratulations to all the recipients of the 26th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards! The awards gala was held April 21 with a sold-out crowd of more than 300 people in attendance. Congratulations to all the nominees and business awards finalists as well! As we see every year at these awards, the local economy is strong and we can thank both our small businesses and larger corporations for their hard work and dedication to business excellence.
Photos from the 26th Annual Samuel McLeod Business Awards can be found beginning on Page 4. More event photos can also be found on our website. A special thank you to our awards sponsors, whose continued support is very much appreciated.
The Chamber was proud to partner with WorkSafe Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board to host a signing of the safety charter on May 4. This event brought together more than 20 local businesses to sign the safety charter and show their commitment to safety in the workplace. It’s important to stay vigilant about safety in the workplace and we were happy to see so many of our Chamber members show their support for this initiative.
On May 5, the Chamber partnered with the City of Prince Albert to host an economic development forum looking at ideas to drive the local economy. This was a well-attended event that brought a variety of ideas to the table to help keep our local economy strong and growing.
The Chamber was disappointed with a recent decision to bring in a new Destination Marketing Levy on hotels in the city. This levy was passed unanimously by the Prince Albert City Council at a meeting April 25 and adds an additional tax on the city’s 10 hotels. The Chamber feels the Destination Marketing Levy puts an unfair burden on local hotels, especially since businesses in Prince Albert are already dealing with the highest commercial tax gap of all cities in Saskatchewan. To read more about the Chamber’s take on the Destination Marketing Levy, visit our website.
As always, details about all Chamber events, and those of our Chamber members, can be found on our website at www.princealbertchamber.com. We have a number of events still to come, including a luncheon with Paper Excellence regarding an update on the mill, a mining week luncheon and our golf tournament June 24. In November, we are excited to present CFL football star Mike ‘Pinball’ Clemons as our guest speaker for our Chairman’s Night event. More details about that event are still to come ...
