What You Should KnowAdmissionProfessional Development and Training courses are designed for adults (17 years and over), unless otherwise stated for a specific course. Admission to younger students is by special arrangement. Please call our office.

Are You On A Wait List?Register early to secure your seat. If you see the “On Wait List” comment on your Registration Statement, this means that a course is full and you have been “Wait Listed”. No payment is required to go on the “Wait List”. If a seat becomes available in this current semester, you will be contacted to process your registration and payment.

Check Your Registration StatementPlease read your Registration Statement receipt carefully. It confirms your registration and contains details of class time, location and room number. Please note your 9-digit Student Number in the upper left-hand corner and quote this Student Number when registering for future courses. Your Student Number allows us to correctly identify you and to ensure that your Student Record is complete.

Course Cancellations and ChangesCourses may be cancelled due to low enrolment or changed for various reasons. Every effort is made to notify you. Please provide your day, evening, and cellphone telephone numbers as well as your email address when you register, in case we need to reach you. It is your responsibility to ensure that you keep your student record up to date. A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled.

RefundsFor most courses, fees are refundable if you withdraw at least seven days before the course starts. Extenuating circumstances may be considered for partial refunds. Please contact our office. Note that special refund deadlines are stated for some courses, and we are unable to issue refunds after those deadlines. Non-Refundable Fees: Some courses may have non-refundable Tuition, Application, and/or Material Fees. A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled.

A Walk in the Woods with a Medicine WomanWalk with First Nations Della Rice Sylvester from Cowichan Tribes as she shares her knowledge of plants as medicine. You will learn how different plants and herbs are used for food and healing. A booklet will be supplied.

Della Rice Sylvester, is Cowichan First Nation and has been studying plants as medicine all her life. Della studied Medical Anthropology at UVic. She has worked with the Pacific Networking Association and BC Wild’s Leadership Initiative For Environment for several years. For Della, healing and improving health can be found in the roots, the leaves, the feel and the smell of the plants. In Della’s words, “Each plant has its own way, its own personality like each of us, and each of our children.”

BUSINESS LEADERSHIPCross-cultural LeadershipWhat constitutes “effective” leadership across cultures? How can culturally diverse teams learn to work together? As the business world becomes more global and both the workforce and your customers become more diverse, you may require new and unique leadership tools. In this two day course, you will focus on developing your skills in cultural awareness and communication as well as learning how to recognize different perspectives and expectations. These skills can be applied both internally and externally and will allow you to leverage cultural diversity to create high performance work teams. Introduction to Strategic PlanningIn order to contribute to the big picture at an organization, managers must possess a solid understanding of the strategic planning process. A strategic plan provides direction and focus for an organization to achieve its goals, however this process is often misunderstood and under-utilized. Through group activity and case studies, this one day course will introduce participants to the full strategic planning process. By the end of this course, you will have gained a comprehensive overview of the strategic planning process as well as strategies for planning, implementing and evaluating results.

Enhancing Employee PerformanceHow do you create clear expectations for your team? What do you do when an employee wants to do a good job, but doesn’t meet your expectations? Performance problems are often caused by barriers that may not be obvious but have a significant impact on how well an employee carries out their duties. This course will focus on positive, non-disciplinary approaches for managers and supervisors to get their employees on track. You will explore some of the barriers that impede performance and how to remove them, and learn new ways to set clear expectations and coach your team to be successful in meeting them.

Marketing Your Art: How to sell your art without selling your soulThis workshop is an integrity-based look at how to authentically invite sales of various forms of art while maintaining a strong focus on the intrinsic value of the art itself and your experience of creating it. This training opportunity is for painters, sculptors, carvers, crafters, performing artists and anyone who loves creating beautiful art but doesn’t enjoy the idea or practice of marketing. The day covers the link between the artist and the art, what you are really offering to potential customers, how to price your work, and how to choose the best way to sell it. All the while ensuring that you can maintain integrity throughout the process called marketing. Each participant will have the opportunity to build a simple practical plan they can implement immediately after the workshop.

Supervisors and managers as leaders in today’s organizations are working in increasingly complex and competitive work environments and are expected to do “more with less”. Through practical skill development, you will learn how to enhance your ability to manage and motivate individuals and groups. There are no pre-requisites required and participants who successfully complete all three courses will receive a certificate from Vancouver Island University and credits toward a diploma or degree program at VIU.

Interpersonal Skills (2 credits)Good leadership begins with effective self-leadership. If we are not personally effective then how can we hope to lead others? This course focuses on interpersonal and communication skills. By the completion of these interactive seminars, participants will have acquired new knowledge, developed a practical understanding, and participated in skill building exercises related to interpersonal & organizational communication skills, active listening, how to use power effectively, coaching, conflict and anger management, assertiveness, and giving and receiving feedback.

Budgets and Forecasting: Understanding Your NumbersEffective management of finances is critical to the long-term success of any business however many managers and supervisors are responsible for budgets and forecasting without having had any formal accounting training. This course will give students the opportunity to successfully establish credible budgets for their business or department. Participants will learn about the different types of budgets, how to prepare and control a budget and how to deal with unexpected variances. Budget forecasting will also be explained along with the opportunity to review and prepare budgets and forecasts based on a sample case study. Students will leave with the confidence to review and build dependable budgets for their organization.

CONFLICT RESOLUTIONConflict ManagementThe productivity of work teams is highly dependent on how they handle conflict. Conflict Management is the process of limiting negative aspects and increasing the positive aspects of conflict. When handled appropriately, conflict provides an opportunity for improved communication, which can in turn improve effectiveness or performance within an organizational setting. In this two day course you will gain understanding of the dynamics of communication, identify different conflict styles, explore barriers to effective communication and learn how to find the interests that drive conflict. General Insurance Essentials (GIE) – Level 1 Salesperson/Adjuster Licensing CourseThe GIE Level 1 Licensing Program is recommended for any individual looking to pursue a career in the Insurance Industry. This course provides the training required by the Insurance Council of BC to obtain a Level 1 Salesperson/Adjuster License. It covers a number of topics including; an introduction to the insurance business, insurance intermediaries and insurance companies, basic documents, insurance practices and automobile insurance. Students will also learn about law and insurance, insurance contracts, insurance organizations, fire insurance, the Homeowner’s policy, liability insurance, commercial coverages, reinsurance, risk management and loss adjustment and prevention. Upon successful completion of this course, students have one year to gain employment with a licensed insurance agency or adjusting firm in order to obtain a Level 1 License. Successful graduates of this Program will be awarded a Certificate from the Insurance Institute of BC. Course fee includes IIBC membership, administration and exam costs.
