This has been an incredible school year filled with countless
achievements by our students and staff members. We hope you enjoy
this edition intended to summarize some of those achievements and
keep you informed of action items accomplished this year as well as
upcoming plans. We invite you to view many more of this year’s highlights on the B*Braggin web page, where you can view student
and staff highlights captured each week of the 2015-2016 school year.
To ensure we have the best for our students, we made history this year with our staff
salary increases. Our staff has received the largest two year increase in the history of
Brazosport ISD. We also added and increased stipends for secondary math and
science, special education, bilingual, fine arts and athletics.
Not only do we want the best staff for our students, we want excellent learning
environments for them. We broke ground at Beutel Elementary School and
construction is in progress for our first of five new beautiful state of the art
elementary schools as part of Bond 2014. Beutel will open in August 2017. Long
and Fleming campuses will be merged as a new Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade
campus on the Long site in August 2018. Each year afterward, new campuses at
Ogg, Roberts and Brannen will be built on the sites of the current campuses.
Our Board of Trustees adopted a new Vision statement this year as BISD… Setting
the Standard for Educational Excellence. It is our desire to ensure our students are
receiving a quality education, have outstanding learning experiences and are
surrounded by caring and compassionate staff. We believe in our students, our staff
and our district. Thank you for trusting us with your child each and every day.
Enjoy your summer!

This marks the third consecutive year that
T.W. Ogg Elementary has been named a
"No Place for Hate" campus by the Anti-
Defamation League. Ogg Elementary is
the only school in Brazoria County to receive this prestigious title.
“Staff members and students at T.W. Ogg
are passionate about creating a campus
that is peaceful and tolerant of all students,” says Ogg teacher
Karen Gresham.
New Bell Schedule for 2016-2017
Ogg Named “No Place for Hate” 3rd Consecutive Year
Beginning August 22, 2016, all BISD elementary, middle and Clute
Intermediate schools will attend classes from 8:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.
Both high schools, the Lighthouse Learning Center, Freeport
Intermediate and Lake Jackson Intermediate schools will attend classes
from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It is necessary to stagger start times for our schools to be able to provide bus transportation for many of our
students.
In 2015, the State Legislature passed House Bill 2610 requiring students
to receive at least 75,600 minutes of instruction, including intermissions
and recess, each year. The minutes must be calculated from the tardy
bell in the morning to the dismissal bell in the afternoon. Teachers are
required to be employed under a 10-month contract, providing a
minimum of 187 days of service to their district. The bill also stipulated that districts include the equivalent of two bad weather makeup days in
their calendar and not end the school year before May 15.
There are many benefits to changing student attendance to minutes
instead of days:
Personalizes student schedules based on their needs
High school can offer up to 8 class periods
More time in the day to offer more electives
More flexibility for students who are taking dual credit, AP and Pre-
AP courses
Allows students taking dual credit classes at Brazosport College the
opportunity to take 6 classes at the high school instead of 5
Offers students the ability to follow their pathway/endorsements
while participating in athletics and/or fine arts courses
Offers more availability for extracurricular choices
Offers opportunities to include UIL academic prep classes, as well as
college prep classes such as ACT and SAT prep
Offers credit recovery (NTC) and/or trailer courses for students
needing more time to learn
Offers Accelerated Instruction (state mandate)
Allows the school year to end in May instead of June
No longer an overlap with college summer school semesters
There are also benefits for our educators. The new legislation
allows student attendance days to be shortened by nine, while
increasing their daily academic minutes. These nine required
contract days for our teachers will allow us to provide
opportunities for additional professional development. Campuses will have more time to focus on specific areas of
growth with the flexibility to train their staff accordingly.
