Message from our President… We are continuing to have good turnouts at all of our dances. July again gave us 2 great evenings of dancing and socializing. I continue to swim in the ocean and am now over 50 miles, heading towards my goal of 100. I have always seemed to live for the summer, swimming, surfing and Shag dancing. Sounds good to me! I enjoy seeing the level of participation of so many of our club members. We continue to have members staying after our dances to help and clean up so that it goes very quickly. We still need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at our upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. In the last few days, long time club members Frank and Mary Ann Darzano have contacted me and offered their Operation Uplink donation to the club for a party. So, because of their generosity on Sunday, November 6 th , there will be an oceanfront Shag Dance party at The Lazy Turtle Bar & Grill on Oak Island with DJ Terry McPhail. Of course all club members will be invited. As the date gets closer I will get more information out to our members. I have also received a letter from the Director of SOAR thanking our club for its generous donation and support. SOS Fall Migration and our Operation Uplink are just around the corner in September and October. I hope that you all are making plans to attend and enjoy these good times. Remember to ask your businesses to make donations for our raffles and auction. We will be bringing back the mailing out of the Operation Uplink tickets for our membership which will help with the fundraising total. Our next board meeting is August 11 th at the VFW at 6 PM. Let us know if there are club issues that we need to address. New nametags are still in the works and we hope to have them for all soon. The club will be having great dances this month. Message from our President…

We are continuing to have good turnouts at all of our dances. July again gave us 2 great

evenings of dancing and socializing. I continue to swim in the ocean and am now over 50

miles, heading towards my goal of 100. I have always seemed to live for the summer,

swimming, surfing and Shag dancing. Sounds good to me!

I enjoy seeing the level of participation of so many of our club members. We continue to

have members staying after our dances to help and clean up so that it goes very quickly. We

still need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do the 50/50 at our upcoming

dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. In the last few

days, long time club members Frank and Mary Ann Darzano have contacted me and offered

their Operation Uplink donation to the club for a party. So, because of their generosity on

Sunday, November 6th, there will be an oceanfront Shag Dance party at The Lazy Turtle Bar &

Grill on Oak Island with DJ Terry McPhail. Of course all club members will be invited. As the

date gets closer I will get more information out to our members. I have also received a letter

from the Director of SOAR thanking our club for its generous donation and support.

SOS Fall Migration and our Operation Uplink are just around the corner in September and

October. I hope that you all are making plans to attend and enjoy these good times.

Remember to ask your businesses to make donations for our raffles and auction. We will be

bringing back the mailing out of the Operation Uplink tickets for our membership which will

help with the fundraising total.

Our next board meeting is August 11th at the VFW at 6 PM. Let us know if there are club

issues that we need to address. New nametags are still in the works and we hope to have

them for all soon. The club will be having great dances this month.

ACSC Summer Workshop Meeting Minutes, July 8-9, 2016...

NOTE: No SOBS Executive Committee Meeting was held in July. Instead, Treasurer, Mary Ann Gregory attended the Associa-

tion of Carolina Shag Clubs, Inc. (ACSC) Summer workshop in Columbia, SC on July 8 – 9, 2016. This is a mandatory require-

ment of all clubs to have a committee representative. As reported...

Susan Martin from Columbia Shag Club opened the meeting welcoming all to the ACSC Summer workshop. She introduced

Libby Goldman Assistant to the Mayor of Columbia who welcomed everyone to Columbia home of 3 Shag Clubs. The ASCS

board was introduced. A new cover page for the ASCS shag book has been designed for each club and included in our infor-

mation. The cover page includes the name of our shag club so if attendees leave their book behind someone can make sure it

is returned. Financial report from Allen Henry as of June 30th was presented and approved.

Charlie Leonard and 2 additional members from the ACSC nominating committee presented the slate of officers running for

office. Ken Aiken, Chairman, Robin Morley, Vice Chairman, Lisa Caveny, Secretary, Allen Henry, Treasurer. All were voted in to

continue business as usual.

All clubs have withdrawn their bids for the ACSC Summer workshop for 2018 , so the bids are back open to all Shag Clubs.

Bids need to be submitted at this year’s Fall Migration. ICON Awards – nominations for 2017 ICONs are due on November 1st.

They are also seeking volunteers to be on the selection committee. Rock Hill Shag Club presented a check for $8,000 to ASCS

for the Hall of Fame Foundation. The money was raised from a “Casino Night” fundraiser they held earlier in the year. Look

for another one in June of 2017 which will be bigger and better, and hopefully raise even more money for a wonderful cause.

For additional information on the Hall of Fame Foundation and what they are all about, please go to

www.halloffamefoundation.org. They are a 501-C so donations are tax deductible. ACSC Executive committee recommended

going to all district workshops. A shag club can’t host workshops for 2 consecutive years. Hosting club gets 2 free advertise-

ments in the newsletters.

North Myrtle Beach Artist & OD Shag Club member Dick Gillespie has produced several prints for each shag club that can be

used as a fundraiser. Prints retail for $70.00 each and will go on sale to general public on January 14 th. For each print sold

the club gets $45.00 and $25.00 goes to The Company Store. Dick receives nothing, the prints are 22x16, they were package

in groups of 10. Dick will come to SOBS Operation Uplink and personalize each print. SOBS and all Shag clubs are under no

obligation to sell the prints and can return all or any not purchased at any time. Lisa provided contact information, where to

send money or prints. I picked up 10 for the club but we are under no obligation. I will bring one to our next board meeting.

Robin Morley praised all 30 clubs currently sponsoring Junior Shaggers and asked for increased support from all shag clubs. A

lot of emphasis on the Junior Shaggers and how The Ellen Taylor Foundation provides financial support of $200 for each Junior

Shagger to attend a workshop. You can donate money or old shag shoes. For additional information on Junior Shaggers go to

www.ellentaylorfoundation.org. The Ellen Taylor Foundation is also a tax deductible foundation. Club Photographers were

given plaques for their dedication and service. Vickie Harrison, with 9 years of service, will retire but continue to update Face-

book. Everyone was told to continue to push sales for Fun Sunday & Monday. Ticket sales pays for all events on Fun Sunday &

Monday and any remaining funds will go to charity.

Don and Wendy will be taking over as Parade Chairman the past chairman looks forward to watching from the sidelines! He

has heard it was a good parade!

ACSC 2017 Summer Workshop will be hosted by Lake Norman Shag Club “Hot summer Nights” July 14–16 at

Embassy Suites, Concord, NC.

Meet Some of Our Members...

Dean & Beth Jones... met when they were

both living in Delaware 25 years ago. They soon

married and moved to Wisconsin so Dean could pur-

sue a job there. Dean had introduced Beth to sailing

on the Chesapeake Bay, so they were delighted to be

living close enough to Lake Michigan to continue

boating while they lived in Wisconsin.

They eventually sold the sailboat in favor of a power

boat in anticipation of completing a journey known

as America’s Great Loop, in which one circumnavi-

gates the eastern United States and Canada. In 2011

they both retired and set off from Lake Michigan on

their “Loop”. This incredible trip took them a full

year as they cruised their boat through 18 states and 2 countries, along with their faithful companion, an African

Gray parrot named Ziggy.

After returning home and getting settled back into life on land, Beth and Dean decided it was time to move some-

place warmer. Beth’s brother lives in Leland and he suggested that they explore possibilities around here. When

they saw St. James they knew they had found their new home. They sold their snow blower and left the snow shov-

els behind for the buyer of their house, and moved to Southport in the Fall of 2014.

Beth is retired from her job managing a group of adjusters in an insurance claim department. Dean is an electrical

engineer who spent the majority of his career in the international marketing of high-voltage electrical products as

used by utility companies. They both love being here in coastal North Carolina where they can take advantage of

the warmer weather and the proximity to the ocean to get out on bike rides and do some beach combing.

Beth has learned mahjongg and plays in two different groups each week. Dean has been able to spend more time

working on and driving his 1933 Plymouth street rod. Reading and jewelry making keep Beth busy as well, while

Dean likes to work on projects around the house or in his garage shop.

Beth had never done much dancing so she was reluctant when friends Tanya and Ron Nickson suggested they take

shag dance lessons together last Fall. Luckily, however, the lessons were with Chuck and Sandy Boney, who made it

so much fun that both couples joined the SOBs even before the lessons were over! They graduated to the interme-

diate class in the Spring and are looking forward to the steps that the Boneys will be teaching in their class this Fall.

Dean & Beth feel that not only is shag dancing great exercise, being a member of the club is a nice way to make

some wonderful new friends. They have enjoyed the format of the SOBS, with two dances a month to keep up their

dancing skills, and the way the club gets involved in volunteer opportunities within the community as well.

WELCOME to our Re-Ups & Guests...

The July 8th “Patriotic #1” dance at the VFW was a nice fun-filled event with first time DJ Ken “Big Cat”

McGee. Summer vacations and I’m sure the oppressive heat kept some members home and away. But, we

had 39 SOBS and 1 member from Northern Virginia Shag Club. The finger-food and desserts brought by

our members were again delicious! Thanks to all who shared their goodies with us.

Our July 22nd “Patriotic #2” dance had a great showing at the Moose Lodge. Ever popular DJ Jerry Burrage

was great as he played his extensive collection of beach music, not to mention that he’s a great dancer

too! The Moose Lodge grill also offered a delicious fish & shrimp platter for our members. Attending were

58 SOBS, 4 members from the Cape Fear Shag Club & Coastal Shag Club and 8 guests.

Club and at the OD Beach Club as well as at the OD Golf Resort/Spanish Galleon

Terry McPhail will be playing for our Friday, August

26th dance at the Moose Lodge. Terry has been involved as a Beach Music DJ for

many years and has played for our club many times and has played our clubs’ Valen-

tine’s Day dance for more years than I can remember. He is retired from a career in

the US Army. Every year he has supported our Project Uplink with a DJ Party dona-

time between Ocean Drive (N. Myrtle Beach) and Elizabethtown, NC. Terry is one of

the DJs on the Annual Blues Cruise and is always at the OD Arcade playing the best

songs during SOS. Terry loves to take requests, so ask for your favorites.

Dance Quotes… (Reprint from NFA July-September 2016 Newsletter)

“Dancing is a very living art. It is essentially of the moment, although a very old art. A dancer’s art is

lived while he is dancing. Nothing is left of his art except the pictures and the memories—when his danc-

ing days are over.” ...Martha Graham

“We should consider each day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”... Friedrich Nietzsche

“There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.” ...Vicki Baum

“Dance is not an answer. Dance is a question. “YES” is the answer.” ...Unknown

“Losing a bet where dance lessons are required for the loser is a great way to start a new

life.” ...anonymous

1. Comfortable shoes and clothes are a must for dancing. Invest in them!

2. Technique is better than moves. But, new moves are still cool; if you’ve got the technique.

3. Positive attitudes are contagious. So are negative ones. Which do you like?

4. Why do bands and DJs always announce a Waltz as a slow dance like it’s suppose to be less tiring?

5. It’s the music that drives the dancing. Good music makes you want to dance. Listen to it!

6. Introduce yourself to a new dancer. You were there once.

7. You spend both money and time on lessons. Don’t waste both by not practicing.

8. Is the lady not getting those leads? Don’t lead harder. Lead smarter, earlier, or easier patterns.

Often the lady can tell you what to do to fix your lead or at least give you a clue as to what she was

expecting.

9. Better personal grooming makes for a better dance partner.

10. Some learn fast. Some learn slow. Have patience with yourself and others.

10 Tips for Better Dancing… (Reprint from NFA July-September 2016 Newsletter)

Steps To Better Leading-Shag Dancing (Read this guys!)… (Reprint from NFA July-September 2016 Newsletter)

Don’t Be Pushy– It’s good to remember that leading is the act of providing your follower with the opportunity to do a

move, or to get creative, or to pause a moment. It’s not the act of telling, forcing, or commanding. If the follower is-

n’t interested in what you’ve got planned… then be nice and change the plan.

Stay Relaxed– Sometimes when you are caught up in the moment and you’re inspired to do the absolutely best move

you know...you can be too intense. Moves always work best when you stay relaxed.

Listen To Your Follower– Your follower is doing you the favor of paying attention to your lead...so you should return

the respect by paying attention to how things are going for her. She might not have been completely comfortable with

the last move and may want to pause for a couple of beats or do a couple of basics to provide some relax time. Or

maybe she is really feeling the music and wants to take a few beats to do some footwork or the latest Underarm Pass

Variation she’s learned or invented. Give her the time.

Connection is Everything– Because so much Swing and other fast dance styles is done in an open position, with only

your hands touching, it’s super important that the connection with you partner be smooth and quiet, not rough or

jerky. The needs to be a flex in your arm, you need to wait for you partner to finish one pattern before starting the

next, and you must think of the point of contact of your hand with her hand as being a stable point, a dependable,

steady, seriously relaxed connection.

Simple First– Make sure that you can easily do simpler patterns first before doing the quadruple twisted dip to an un-

suspecting follower. Build up to the harder moves.

Dancing Is a Fun Conversation- What’s really nice about Swing and other fast dance styles is that it’s all set up to be

give and take process between the leader and follower. The more you allow that give and take to happen, the more

fun the conversation will be. You don’t compete against your partner. You have a good time together.

Pay Attention To The Music– If it’s your favorite song, this will be easy, but...well…,some were really never meant to

be swing songs. But you’re still out on the floor. You’ve still got a partner...so make lemonade out of that lemon of a

song. The best way is to search for an interesting detail in the music. If you’re lucky, even discover what it was that

possessed the DJ to play it in the first place.

Watch How Others Dance– It’s easy to dance all night and hardly give a thought to the other couples on the floor but it

can be a learning experience. As a leader you are not exposed to as many new moves as the follower. So take a look

around sometimes and see what the other leaders are doing. You might find some inspiration.

Take a Class Or a Lesson- Just like watching other leaders dancing, taking lessons can give you new ideas to try to

keep your dancing fresh. This can clue you in to the latest trends and you’ll have an easier time when your follower

does something you’ve never seen before.

It’s All About having A Good Time- Even if you’re a hardened competitor, it’s still about having a good time. There’s

really no other purpose to dancing. Besides, happiness is healthy.
