Message from our President…
We continue to have great turnouts at all of our dances. June gave us two great evenings of
dancing and socializing. I continue to swim in the ocean and am close to 50 miles. I have
always seemed to live for the Summer time and with it Shag dancing.
I am continuing to see the fantastic levels of enthusiasm in so many of our club members. It
felt good to support SOAR with a contribution of over $400 to help the animals in need in our
area. At the recent VFW dance so many stayed to help and clean up that it seemed to be
done very quickly. We still need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and the 50/50
Raffle at our upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club
members. I was overwhelmed when Dennis and Elaine Faver chose to celebrate Elaine’s 29th
birthday with everyone at the dance with the shag dance themed cake. It was an excellent
cake and an excellent way to celebrate-with SOBS friends. What wonderful people the Faver’s
are!
Beach day will be over by the time you get this and I hope it went well. Congratulations to
the Winners. With Katy still working at South Brunswick, our only time for long vacations is in
the Summer so we will be gone until the first of August visiting friends, children and grand-
children.
Our next board meeting is July 7th at the VFW at 6 PM. Let us know if there are any club
issues that we need to address. New nametags should be coming soon. The club will be
having great DJ’s this month.

Meet Some of Our Members...
Scott & Cindy Hettinger... met while they were
in high school. Both of their mothers were roommates
in the hospital. They went on their first date and
things blossomed from there. Both attended Penn
State and were married at the Penn State chapel on
April 12, 1980. They have 2 children, Stacey and
Scott. Stacey is a teacher in New Hanover county and
is married to a great son-in-law Collin and they
have a son Carson age 2. Scott is a Detective with
the Carolina Beach Police Department and is married
to our favorite daughter in law Megan. They have 3
children, Noah age 9, Scotty age 4 and Ava Grace 1
½. They feel so fortunate to have their kids and
grandkids so close to them.
Scott & Cindy are both from Reading, PA. They started
searching for retirement places right after their kids went to college and settled on St. James after looking in Florida,
Georgia , North and South Carolina and Virginia.
Cindy is a retired elementary teacher and reading specialist. She continues to work in the New Hanover County school
system. Scott proudly served in the United States Navy and upon separating from the service worked in the pharma-
ceutical industry before starting his own insurance business in 1991. Scott is still working and travels back and forth to
Pennsylvania.
Scott enjoys golfing, handyman stuff around the house and also a regular at the member’s gym. He spends a lot of
time with their kids and grandkids. Cindy loves to swim, ride bikes, spend time with their grandchildren and really any
other outdoor activity.
They have been shag dancing for about four years. They had to repeat the beginner lessons several times until they got
the hang of it.
They took their first lesson with Randy & Sue at Brunswick Community College and then were fortunate enough to meet
Chuck and Sandy Boney who have really taught them everything they know. They can’t begin to tell what great dance
instructors and just wonderful people they are. They hope everyone gets the chance to learn from them.
They feel shag dancing is great exercise and keeps you mentally sharp. Becoming members of the SOBS has given
them the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people. They have been SOBS one year!
They have helped out at dances selling 50/50 tickets and try to help clean up after every dance. They’re sure they will
get more involved as time goes by.
Scott & Cindy are very happy with the direction of the club. They enjoy the dances every two weeks. They have gone to
Columbia, SC for the Capital City “Shag Extravaganza Weekend” and have been to North Myrtle to take in the Pavilion
and dance clubs.

WELCOME to our Re-Ups & Guests...
The June10th “Hawaiian Luau” dance at the VFW was a success! We had 59 SOBS, 8 guests, 2 members
from OD Pavilion Shag Club and 4 from the Coastal Shag Club. The Hawaiian style foods and desserts
brought by our members were delicious as usual. Thanks to all who shared their goodies with us. DJ
Butch Adeimy kept the dance floor full and gave us bits of Shag Trivia of the music during his sets.
Our June 24th “Here’s Summer” dance had a great showing at the Moose Lodge even though the rainy
weather kept some home. DJ Kitty Earles first appearance at our dance was great as she played her bluesy
beach songs. Attending were 46 SOBS, 8 members from the OD Shag Club, OD Pavilion Shag Club, VA
Beach Shag Club, Coastal Shag Club and 1 guest.

July DJ Information... Fellow SOBS… We are having lots of great opportunities to dance this year. Butch
Adeimy and Kitty Earles did a great job in June. Summer is here and the ocean and
beach are nice again. Spinning the discs for our July dances are
Ken “Big Cat” McGee at the VFW Friday, July 8th
and
Jerry Burrage at the Moose Lodge, Friday July 22nd
Ken and his wife Pam are from Harrisburg, NC and now live in Ocean Drive, SC. As a ca-
reer, Ken was involved in the salvage business. For a number of years he had his own
beach club and bar at his work facility that was the home of the Piedmont Shag Associa-
tion. This will be his first time playing for the SOBS. Ken plays regularly at Saville’s, and
Pirates Cove in North Myrtle Beach and has played all the Ocean Drive clubs and many Shag
clubs up and down the East Coast. Ken has been involved with music for over 40 years.
Come out and enjoy a dance evening with Ken McGee.
Jerry Burrage has played for our club a number of times over the years and has played our
Christmas Party for as long as I can remember. He and his wife Marilyn are Hall of Fame
dancers and have competed in Shag competition for many years. Jerry has been spinning
and collecting tunes for over 20+ years. During the summer months, he is one of the
house DJs at the landmark Ocean Drive Pavilion. Jerry has also been one of the DJ’s on the
Annual Blues Cruise. Jerry has been Vice-President of the Association of Beach and Shag
Club DJs. Come out and enjoy an evening with Jerry Burrage. We will be thinking of you
dancing at these July events without us, as there is no Shag dancing in Hawaii (that we
know of - only Hula!).

A Line Dance “Marathon”...
As reported by Joan Slowik… My sister, Judy Kelley from Florida, and I
spent June 2-5, 2016 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Raleigh/Durham,
NC, attending the 23rd Annual Line Dance Marathon licensed
by ASCAP, BMI and SESAC thru their NFA affiliation. There were easily
1,500 dancers in attendance. We had classes during the day and open
dance each evening with a grand show on Saturday night put on by the
dance instructors and choreographers. We had a great time and learned
many new dances which I look forward to teaching in the future. It was
a fun trip!
Thanks to your generosity at our May 27th we pre-
sented a check for $423 to the good folks at
S.O.A.R. The Southport/Oak Island Animal Rescue
