Margaret A. McKenna, president of Suffolk University in Boston, is an educator and lawyer who has spent

her career advocating for social justice. She was appointed Suffolk’s 10th president in 2015, the first woman

to lead the University.

Since arriving at Suffolk, McKenna has reaffirmed the University’s commitment to its founding mission of

improving lives through access to educational opportunity. Suffolk is a model urban university that takes

an applied approach to the liberal arts and integrates broad-based learning with professional education.

The University, with inextricable ties to the city of Boston, is uniquely situated to provide experiential

learning opportunities and cutting-edge interdisciplinary programs centered on public policy, urban issues,

entrepreneurship, and innovation. Suffolk imparts the knowledge and skills needed to change policies that

improve our community and the world.

McKenna began her career as a civil rights attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. Later in her career

she served as the deputy counsel in the White House and as undersecretary of the U.S. Department of

Education, and she led the education transition team for President Clinton.

McKenna’s experience in higher education includes serving as vice president of Radcliffe College, as

president of Lesley University for 22 years, and as a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University.

While leading the Walmart Foundation from 2007 to 2011, McKenna created a strategy that emphasized

hunger relief, education, and the economic empowerment of women. During her term, the foundation

provided more than $900 million in grants annually.

McKenna is an author, speaker, and expert on issues of educational access, women’s economic

empowerment, hunger, and social change leadership.

McKenna is the recipient of numerous national and local awards and 10 honorary degrees. She has served

on five corporate boards and dozens of nonprofit boards and serves as the vice chair of the Beth Israel

Deaconess Medical Center Board and sits on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary

Education.

A CHAMPIONSHIP CITY

For the past decade, no city can comkpete with Boston’s

success and Suffolk is located right in the heart of it all. In

fact, when the city’s teams win a title, their championship

parades roll right past our campus buildings.

The Boston Bruins and Celtics compete at TD Garden, just

a five-minute walk from campus. Many Suffolk students

have even completed internships there. Legendary

Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, is a short

subway ride from our front door. And the four-time

champion New England Patriots play at Gillette Stadium,

which is easily accessible by the commuter rail.

Some of the most memorable moments in sports history

have happened in Boston and Suffolk’s athletic programs

share in that great tradition.

Suffolk University announced the appointment of Cary McConnell as Director of

Athletics in October 2014. McConnell has served as interim director since August of

2013 following the retirement of James Nelson earlier that year.

McConnell becomes Suffolk’s third athletics director in the program’s sixty eight

year history. McConnell joins Charles Law (1946-1975) and Nelson (1975-2013) as

the only other people to hold that title in the institution.

During his time under interim status, McConnell participated in an internal review

of the department that resulted in a number of important recommendations for

strengthening the athletics program and he has initiated the first steps toward

achieving these goals.

In his new role as director, McConnell will continue the development of the

intercollegiate program and the strengthening of intramural opportunities for all

students. He will join with the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement in

expanding leadership development opportunities for student athletes and in the

creation of club sports. His leadership and implementation of new programs will

be essential to achieving the University’s goals for enhancing the quality of the

student athlete experience.

McConnell joined the University in 1996 as associate director of athletics and head

baseball coach. He had been head baseball coach position at the University of

Rochester.

In his time at Suffolk, McConnell has won 479 contests (.635 winning percentage),

recording at least 20-wins in a year for 17 consecutive seasons. He has guided

Suffolk to four NCAA Championship Tournament appearances, along with four

Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles. Suffolk has appeared in the

GNAC’s Conference Championship game for eight consecutive years. He has been

named the GNAC Coach of the Year on five occasions and has taken Suffolk to ten

Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournaments, including championships

in 2000 and most recently in 2014.

In 2013, McConnell received the Jack Butterfield Award by the New England

Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA). The award is given to an active New

England coach who demonstrates integrity and dedication to the game of college

baseball.

In 22 seasons as a collegiate head coach McConnell has amassed 534 career

victories.

In May 2013, McConnell was inducted into the Suffolk University Athletics Hall

of Fame alongside his 2000 Baseball team. That team set a school record with

38 wins in a season, while his pitching staff led all NCAA Division-III baseball

programs in earned run average (2.69) and strikeouts (401). They made their first

NCAA appearance while winning both the GNAC and ECAC Tournaments. They

were also inducted into the GNAC’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class of 2010.

McConnell is also an enshrined member of the Medina County Hall of Fame (2007)

and Brunswick High School Hall of Fame (1994) in his native Ohio.

A graduate of the College of Wooster, McConnell was a four-year starter in

the infield for the Scots and was selected to the All-Decade Team for the North

Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) for the 80’s. At Wooster, McConnell played

in four straight NCAA Tournaments and one World Series finishing fifth. He

earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and earned certification to teach

at the Secondary level. In addition, he holds a Master’s Degree in Educational

Administration from the University of Rochester (Rochester, New York).

McConnell resides in Reading along with his wife Kathy, son Charlie and daughter

Annie.

east boston memorial parkFor the first time in Suffolk University Athletics history its outdoor varsity sports teams will call a place home thanks to a unique public-private partnership between the Rams and the City of Boston.

Under a 10-year agreement with Boston, Suffolk will invest to transform the city-owned East Boston Memorial Park to establish a permanent athletics facility. This comprehensive restoration will result in updated facilities that will benefit Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department, East Boston High School, as well as serve as the new home field location for Suffolk Athletics teams.

“We could not be more excited – the future home of the Rams’ baseball, men’s and women’s soccer and softball teams will be a first-class facility that will enhance the experience of our student-athletes and fans alike,” Director of Athletics Cary McConnell said. “I cannot begin to measure the significance of this partnership with the City of Boston that not only provides a home-field facility for our programs, but continues Suffolk’s long tradition of giving service to the wider community. We hope that this will provide opportunities for our student-athletes, as well as the Boston community, including our neighbors and the residents of East Boston.”

The renovation will include new electronic scoreboards, batting cages, storage lockers, fencing and more seating in a stadium at the park. Suffolk will purchase new training equipment for East Boston High School and award two scholarships each year to seniors. Additionally, scheduling of university events would not displace the high school and youth teams that currently use Memorial Park as Suffolk will play during set times in the fall and spring seasons.

Memorial Park is an urban recreational area and is part of the city’s 2,100-acre chain of parks and waterways that provides residents and visitors with clean, green, safe and accessible open space.

Since the inception of Suffolk Athletics its outdoors teams – baseball, soccer and softball – have packed their gear into vans and traveled across the city to a variety of fields where time and space became available. No longer will this timely tradition be a part of the student-athlete experience at Suffolk, instead it is hoped that Memorial Park not only have a significant impact on their development as athletes, but on their experience as Suffolk University students as a whole.

The Suffolk community looks forward to this partnership with the city and its enhancement to the university’s experience. The Rams will begin competition at Memorial Park this fall.

2016 OUTLOOKWith a wealth of new faces and an influx of pitching arms, the Suffolk baseball

team looks to continue its upward swing in 2016 and repeat as GNAC Champions.

Anthony Del Prete enters his second season as head coach of his alma mater.

The team captured its fifth GNAC crown in his debut, going 18-26 overall and 9-5

against GNAC competition. After a tough 4-6, nine-day Florida trip to start the

season, Suffolk returned to a snow covered New England and dropped contests

to eventual NCAA participants Salem State and Western New England. The Rams

turned things around in GNAC play, where they went 9-5, and captured the title

en route to the Big Dance.

Now Del Prete is tasked with integrating all the incoming talent into his team’s

lineup and pitching staff. He is once again focusing on the team’s fundamentals in

order to build upon last season’s success.

Suffolk graduated six seniors from last year’s squad. The most notable departure

was second team All-GNAC Josh Desai. The southpaw hurler, who was named the

2015 GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player follow his complete game five-hitter,

put together a 3.05 ERA, logging a team-high 65 innings on the season. Desai led

all hurlers in the league with 64 strikeouts on the season, while ranking among

the top 20 pitchers in NCAA DIII Baseball with seven complete games.

The 2016 roster is currently comprised of 34 players - 11 freshman (12 true

newcomers), eight sophomores, six juniors and six seniors. The starting lineup in

the field brings six regular starters back into the fold. Suffolk hit for a .237 team

batting average last season, scored 4.25 runs per game and posted a .947 fielding

percentage. Offensively, the Rams will have more than 73 percent of its at-bats,

runs, hits, homeruns, RBI and extra-base hits back for 2016.

Last year’s leading bat, Jon Lapolla, returns to the line-up, but so do the dynmaic

duo of sophomore Brady Chant and senior Drew Carter. Lapolla led the Rams

last season in batting average (.291), slugging percentage (.455), and on-base

percentage (.429), which all ranked sixth among GNAC players. The senior

catcher also produced team-best numbers in runs (27) and doubles (10). Lapolla’s

classmates Rob Marks and Julien Plana will also return for their final year in blue-

and-gold in the hopes of adding more firepower to the Rams offense.

On the mound, Suffolk has a wealth of arms to choose from. A total of 15 pitchers

populate the roster - 10 righties, four lefties; 14 exclusive and one who is also a

position player. The pitching staff returns more than 47 percent of its starts,

innings pitched and strikeouts.

Chuck Gibson returns to the hill for the Rams, looking to lead the deep Suffolk

staff. Gibson hurled 48.2 innings last season, owning a 3.14 ERA and 2-4 record

in seven starts. The junior struck out 21 batters last year on the bump as well.

Cal Carroll will step on the mound for the last time in his career in 2016. The

senior right hander saved four games last year, the most by a pitcher in a Suffolk

uniform in the program’s 69-year history.

RAMS PICKED THIRD IN GNAC PRESEASON POLL

Only two votes spearted the first through third place schools in the 2016 GNAC

Preseason Coaches’ Poll with Suffolk landing in third, two points behind Saint

Joseph’s College.

St. Joseph’s was selected as the favorite. The Monks earned 55 points and three

first-place votes, while Suffolk garnered 53 points and two first-place nods.

Johnson & Wales was sandiched in between the two with 54 points and two

first-place elects.

Behind the Rams were Lasell (41), Rivier (32), Albertus Magnus (22), Norwich

(20) and Anna Maria (11).

anthonyDEL PRETEhead coach · second year

Anthony Del Prete was named Head Baseball Coach at Suffolk University for the 2015 season and enters his second season at the helm in 2016. Del Prete will also serve as the department’s Associate Director of Athletics.

Del Prete will replace Cary McConnell, who relinquished the roles he was named the University’s Director of Athletics. He becomes just the sixth baseball coach in the program’s 68 year history.

In his first season in 2015, Del Prete guided Suffolk to its fifth GNAC Championship and fifth trip to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. Along the way three Rams were recognized by conference for their performances throughout the season. Josh Desai was named GNAC Tournament MVP following his complete game effort in a 3-2 victory over St. Joseph’s College in the semifinals and picked up second-team accolades. Brady Chant received a Gold Glove by the conference as the centerfielder who did not record an error on the year and was chosen to the All-GNAC tourney team, while Jon Lapolla, who led the Rams in batting average (.291), slugging percentage (.455) and on-base percentage (.429), was awarded a spot on the conference’s thrid-team.

Del Prete has served as an assistant coach at Suffolk for the past 10 seasons. In 2014 he was promoted to Associate Head Coach as Suffolk won their program’s second Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship. Del Prete also served as an assistant in 2005 and 2009, seasons in which Suffolk advanced to two of the program’s four NCAA Tournament appearances with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships.

He takes over the program of his alma mater in which he graduated in 2004. In four seasons on the mound at Suffolk he recorded a 21-11 overall record helping guide the Rams to a 2002 NCAA Tournament appearance in which he was named GNAC Tournament MVP, the conference Pitcher of the Year and an New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association(NEIBA) All-Region selection.

He pitched for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 2002 and served as closer for the Columbus All-Americans of the Great Lakes Summer League during their championship season in 2003. After his time at Suffolk, Del Prete had a brief stint with the North Shore Spirit of the independent CanAm League. In 2005, he signed with theEvansville Otters of the Frontier League. Del Prete spent 3 seasons playing professionally in Evansville, Indiana, helping the Otters win their franchise’s first and only league championship in 2006. He is ninth all-time in appearances (74) for the franchise. Del Prete has also traveled overseas to play as he spent the winter of 2005 in Perth, Western Australia, pitching for the Melville Braves of the Western Australia State League with stops in Antwerp, Belgium (2002) and Cuba (2011) in between.

Following his playing career, Del Prete completed his Master’s Degree in Administration of Higher Education at Suffolk where he served as the department’s graduate assistant.

From 2008 to 2015, Del Prete served as the institution’s Sports Information Director, overseeing all media relations and publicity of the athletics programs, while maintaining the department’s website. He also served as an advisory member for the institution’s athletic review committee in 2014.

Alongside his baseball responsibilities, Del Prete will also serve as the department’s Associate Director of Athletics. He will oversee the marketing and promotion of the athletics programs, serve as the department’s compliance and recruiting coordinator and also handle scheduling for the varsity intercollegiate men’s sports teams.

Del Prete is a native of East Boston in which he still currently resides.
