TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN. LED A WORKSHOP ON
DEVELOPING DRAWING STANDARDS. THROUGH INTENSIVE DRAWING
AND MODEL MAKING WORKSHOPS , MINIATURE EXHIBITS WERE
DEVELOPED FOR THE EXPLORATORIUM.
INITIALLY BROUGHT ON TO ASSIST IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF
A SCALED MODEL FOR A PROJECT TO BE EXHIBITED FOR THE
SOUPERGREEN SHOW AT THE A+D MUSEUM IN LOS ANGELES. I
WAS AGAIN BROUGHT ON FOR THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF
DRAWINGS FOR A SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENCE IN OAKLAND THAT
WAS LATER TO BE FEATURED AS A PART OF THE 2015 AIA EST BAY
HOME TOURS.

SOUTH PARK RESIDENCE (2010)
INSTRUCTION: RANDOLPH RUIZ/KRISTEN SIDELL
A COMBINED HOME AND GALLERY SPACE ASSERTS A DICHOTOMY OF PROGRAM BY ALLOWING THE
STREET TO CARVE THROUGH THE PROJECT’S MASSING. THROUGH A COMMON ENTRY AT THE REAR OF
THE PROJECT, TWO DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES ARE PRESENTED TO THE USER. THE EXPERIENCE OF THE
HOMEOWNER IS ORGANIZED PRAGMATICALLY AROUND TIME. THE DIURNAL FUNCTIONS OF A LIVING SPACE
ARE LOCATED TOWARDS THE STREET, AND ONE PROGRESSES BACK TO BED. THE VISITOR ENTERS AT THE
GALLERY’S CENTER, REJECTING ANY HIERARCHY OF PROGRAM. A CENTRAL PATH GUIDES ONE BACK TO
THE STREET, WITH EXHIBITIONS LOOSELY STEPPING OFF OF THIS. THE VALUE OF THE SECTION IS ALSO
INTERROGATED: IN THE HOME CEILING HEIGHT IS RELATIVE TO THE FUNCTION OF USE,. IN THE GALLERY,
ART IS DISPLAYED IN DIFFERENT SIZED ROOMS JUST AS BUYERS DO NOT HAVE IDENTICAL HOMES.
NEW SUTRO BATH HOUSE (2011)
INSTRUCTION: JASON ANDERSON/ERIK BLOOM
ADOLPH SUTRO’S ORIGINAL BATHHOUSE HAD STOOD IN RUINS FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY, WITH
THE POOL’S SLAB AND FOUNDATION FOR THE PUMP HOUSE BEING THE MOST PHYSICALLY LASTING
ELEMENTS OF THE ORIGINAL COMPLEX. THE REST OF THE SITE CONSISTS OF LOOSE SANDY-SOIL AND
HOSTS A GREAT VARIETY OF FLORA AND FAUNA, THUS THEREUSE OF THE EXISTING RUINS PRESENTED
AN OPPORTUNITY TO REDUCE THE IMPACT ON THE FRAGILE ECOLOGY, AND ALSO A STABLE FOUNDATION
UPON WHICH TO BUILD. THE SIZE OF THE PROGRAM DOESN’T ALLOW FOR THE PROJECT TO REST SOLELY
ON THE EXISTING RUINS ALONE SO FOOTING STRATEGIES HAD TO BE DETERMINED FOR MULTIPLE
GROUND CONDITIONS. FORMALLY, THE FACETED MONOLITHIC STRUCTURE EMERGES FROM THE LAND
TO OPEN UP TO VAST UNINHIBITED VIEWS OF THE OCEAN.
POINT LOBOS CONSERVANCY (2011)
INSTRUCTION: JASON ANDERSON/ERIK BLOOM
SITUATED AT THE UPPER SLOPE OF POINT LOBOS, THE CONSERVANCY FUNCTIONS AS A MUSEUM,
LIBRARY, AND RESEARCH LABORATORY FOR THE POINT LOBOS NATURAL RESERVE. THE PROJECT
SEEKS TO MINIMIZE ITS FOOTPRINT, AND DOES SO THROUGH A MASSING STRATEGY THAT LOADS
STRUCTURE TOWARDS THE BACK, ALLOWING FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE FACILITY TO CANTILEVER OVER
THE SLOPE. SECTIONALLY OBLIQUE FLOOR PLATES INCREASE FLOOR SPACE WITHIN A COMPACT AREA.
WHEN JUXTAPOSED AGAINST A FORM THAT SLOPES IN THE OPPOSITE WAY, UTILITY SPACES CAN BE
EMBEDDED WITHIN THE POCHE.
THE HUB, NY (2011)
INSTRUCTION: ANDREW KUDLESS
THE HUB HOTEL IS LOCATED IN THE CHELSEA DISTRICT, DIRECTLY OFF OF THE HIGH LINE. AN INITIAL
ANALYSIS OF THE BURROUGH REVEALED IT TO BE AN ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE PLACE. WHILST
REPRESENTATIVE OF A RICH SOCIAL FABRIC, THERE IS ALSO A SENSE OF ISOLATION ON A NEIGHBORHOOD
BY NEIGHBORHHOD BASIS ON THE ISLAND. THE HUB RESPONDS TO THIS BY OPENING UP TO THE
HIGHLINE ITSELF, USING THE PARK AS GRAND ENTRANCE. A PUBLIC PLAZA IS CREATED, SERVING AS AN
AMORPHEUS INTERSTITIAL SPACE BETWEEN THE PARK AND THE HOTEL. WITHIN THE HOTEL, SHARED
RESOURCES FOR GUESTS - KITCHENETTES, GYMS, AND LOUNGES - PUT INTERACTION AT THE FORE
OF THE HOTEL’S MISSION, CREATING AN EXPERIENCE OF THE CITY THAT SEEKS TO GO BEYOND THE
PHYICALITY OF ITS ARCHITECTURE.

INSTRUCTION: RANDOLPH RUIZ/CATHERINE VEIKOS
AFTER THE DESTRUCTION OF A FREEWAY OVERPASS IN HAYES VALLEY, THE NEIGHBORHOOD SAW A NEW
DEMAND FOR DENSE URBAN HOUSING AS MORE PEOPLE FLOCKED FOR A NEW QUIETER HOUSING. THIS
EXTRACTION CREATED A LARGE SCAR IN THE CITYSCAPE, AND ALSO OPPORTUNITIES TO ADDRESS THE CITY’S
HOUSING ISSUE. THROUGH THE DENSIFICATION OF SAN FRANCISCO, STACKHOUSE STRATEGIZES THE SHIFTING
OF UNITS TO OPEN UP GARDEN SPACES FOR RESIDENTS. PER REGULATION, THE LOWEST LEVEL ON THE LOT
FACING HAYES STREET IS DEDICATED FOR COMMERCIAL SPACES, THUS ALLOWING A FURTHER PRIVATIZATION
OF THESE BACK YARDS. BETWEEN THE HIGHLY PUBLIC COMMERCIAL SPACES AND THE MORE PRIVATE
GARDEN SPACES IS A FURTHER LAYER OF SHARED SPACES ON THE NORTHERN LOT WHERE COMMUNAL
SPACES OPEN UP INTO A THEATRE SPACE THAT ANTICIPATES EVENTS ORGANIZED FOR AND BY RESIDENTS.

SPURRED BY THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES OF RECENTLY FOUND ENERGY AND MINERAL DEPOSITS,
BRAZIL EXPECTS FOR POPULATION GROWTH TRENDS TO PUSH ITS PEOPLE DEEPER INTO THE LAND.
ESPECIALLY AT RISK IS THE PANTANAL - A WETLAND THAT SITS ATOP THE GUARANI AQUIFER, THE
LARGEST SOURCE OF FRESH WATER IN THE WORLD. A UNION OF SOUTH AMERICAN NATIONS - IIRSA -
PLANS TO DAM AND DRAIN PARTS OF THE PANTANAL TO FACILITATE ECONOMIC GROWTH. THE RIPARIAN
COLLECTIVE IS AN URBAN DEVELOPMENT THAT PROMOTES AWARENESS AND CONSERVATION WITHIN
THE PANTANAL BY CREATING COMMUNITIES THAT ARE TIED TO IT. AT ITS FOCUS STANDS A SATELLITE
RESEARCH CENTER TIED TO NUMEROUS ACADEMIC ESTABLISHMENTS THAT STUDIES THE LOCAL
ECOLOGY, AND PROVIDES AN ECOTOURISM DESTINATION THAT SERVES TO SUSTAIN THE DEVELOPMENT.

LOCATED AT OUTER MIRANDA, THE ANCHOR CAMPUS AT THE RIPARIAN COLLECTIVE SITUATES ITSELF
AT THE MOUTH OF THE PANTANAL. IT USES ITS RELATIVELY HIGH FLAT LAND TO ITS BENEFIT WHEN
UTILIZING NATURAL RESOURSES. RAINWATER AND WASTEWATER ARE COLLECETED RESPECTIVELY,
AND PASSED THROUGH A SERIES OF CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS TO FILTER OUT DIRT AND PATHOGENS,
WHILE OPENINGS IN THE CANOPY ALLOW FOR UV EXPOSURE TO FURTHER COMBAT BACTERIA.
CLASSROOMS AND LABS ARE CLUSTERED, AND ANCHORED TO TREES THROUGH AN AMORPHEUS
LAMELLA STRUCTURE SOURCED FROM LOCALLY SOURCED WOOD. STRUCTURALLY, THIS FORM TAKES
ITS POINT OF REFERNCE FROM EXISTING ELEVATED TOURIST TRAILS IN THE REGION.

INSTRUCTION: BRIAN PRICECOLLABORATION: ANTHONY BITUIN
SENSORY DISPARIUM IS A PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, SAN FRANCISCO.
PROGRAMMATICALLY, IT LIFTS AND DELAMINATES THE HIGHLY CONTROLLED ELEMENTS OF A THEATER
EXPERIENCE, AND THEN LOOSELY OVERLAYS THEM TO PROVIDE A HEIGHTENED EXPERIENCE THROUGH
JUXTAPOSITION. THE ELEMENTS OF SCENT, SOUND, AND LIGHT ARE AXIALLY ARRANGED TO PROVIDE
SPATIAL PROCESSIONS OF THESE EXPERIENCES. THEY ARE ALLOWED TO COLLIDE TO CREATE FURTHER
LAYERS OF COMPLEXITY TO THE EXPERIENCE. A CONTROLLED PATH OF SCENT WILL INTERJECTS AT
POINTS WITH THAT OF LIGHT AND SOUND. THESE POINTS OF COLLISION CREATE LANDMARKS WITHIN

FRESH GROUND PROSE IS A MOBILE PUPPET THEATER, WHICH THROUGH SIMPLE CONTROLLED
ACTIONS, A SERIES OF RANDOMIZED AND UNPREDICTABLE OUTCOMES RESULT. AN AMORPHOUS
FIGURE TRAVERSES BETWEEN TWO TRANSPARENCIES OF RECOGNIZABLE LANDMARKS. AS THESE
TRANSPARENCIES OVERLAP, SURREAL SCENES ARE CREATED THROUGH THIS AMALGAMATION. THROUGH
THE REALM OF SURREALISM, THE IMRPOVISATIONAL ABILITIES OF THE PUPPET MASTER COME TO THE
FORE - WHETHER TO BRING RATIONALE TO THE MADNESS, OR TO TAKE THE JUXTAPOSITION OF THE
CHARACTER AND HIS SCENERY AS A POINT OF DEPARTURE TO RUN WILD WITH. PLACING ITSELF WITHIN

INSTRUCTION: CHRIS HAAS/NEIL SCHWARTZCOLLABORATION: SCOTT LORD/NHAT VO
THE MYSTRERIOUS APPARATUS IS A POP-UP MAKER SPACE DESIGNED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NEEDS OF
THE CHILDREN’S CREATIVITY MUSEUM OF SAN FRANCISCO. PARTICIPANTS PULL LEVERS AND OPEN DOORS
IN RESPONSE TO A SERIES OF QUESTIONS, FROM WHICH THEY ARE GIVEN MATERIALS AND A DIRECTIVE.
TOOLS IN HAND, THE CHILDREN MAKE CREATURES OR PERSONAL AVATARS THAT SERVE TO PROVIDE A
TACTILE REPRESENTATION OF THEIR IMAGINATIONS. THESE AVATARS ARE THEN PLACED BACK ON TO THE
MYSTERIOUS APPARATUS, EVENTUALLY PROVIDING A SURFACE THAT CONCEALS THE EXPOSED STRUCTURE.
THE MYSTERIOUS APPARATUS FUNCTIONS A THREE LAYERED OBJECT OF PERFORMANCE UNTO ITSELF:
THAT OF THE PULLING AND TWISTING OF LEVERS AND OPENING DOORS; THAT OF THE PERFORMANCE OF
MAKING; AND THAT OF THE GRADUAL CONCEALING OF THE MACHINE WITH THE OBJECTS PRODUCED.

INSTRUCTION: JASON KELLY JOHNSONCOLLABORATION: MARLENE HURTADO/JEFFREY LONG
THE CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS CONTAINS A SERIES OF SPACES THAT ARE DEFINED BY HARD
SURFACES. FLORA IS A DEPLOYABLE OBJECT THAT UTILIZES DIGITAL PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES THAT
CAN BE REPLICATED AND MODIEFIED TO CREATE A FIELD OF STRUCTURES UPON WHICH PLANTS CAN
BE GROWN AS TO PROVIDE COLOR AND TEXTURE TO HE CAMPUS. FLORA USES A RECYCLABLE PETG
GRADE PLASTIC AND COMMON MECHANICAL JOINTS, OWING TO ITS PART TO HAVE A LIFE THAT EXTENDS
PAST THAT OF THE OBJECT. ITS COMPONANTS ARE ALSO THERMOFORMED FROM TWELVE COMPONANTS,
ALLOWING FOR A MAXIMIZATION IN FORM FROM MINIMAL PARTS.
LUCIFERIN REDUX (2012)
INSTRUCTION: MICHAEL BOGAN
LUCIFERIN REDUX DELVES INTO EXPLORING SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES - NAMELY IN BIOLOGY AND FLUID
DYNAMICS - AND APPLIED THEM TO DESIGN. INITIAL EXPERIMENTS DELVED INTO CREATING GRAPHIC
GAMES THAT SOUGHT TO CREATE GRAPHIC COMPLEXITY THROUGH SIMPLE, REPETITVE STEPS. FROM
HERE, DIAGRAMMING TECHNIQUES WERE DEVELOPED THAT COULD BE UTILIZED FOR DOCUMENTATION
RATHER THAN GENERATION. THIS LED TO A SERIES OF FLUID EXPERIMENTS AND THE DOCUMENTING
AND DIAGRAMMING OF THEM. EXPERMENTATION WAS EVENTUALLY CONDUCTED AT THE FACILITIES
OF THE BIO-X LABS OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY, UTILIZING THE RESOURCES OF MEASURING LEVELS
OF BIOLUMINESANCE, AS WELL AS HAVINF ACCESS TO OTHER PRECISION APPARATUS TO AID IN THE
DEVELOPING OF ANALYTICAL GRAPHICS.

THE UPPER ROCKRIDGE RESIDENCE PRESENTED AN OPPERTUNITY TO WORK ACCORDING TO THE
PRINCIPLES OF WHAT WES JONES CALLS BOSS ARCHITECTURE. THE BOSS IS AN INTERVENTION THAT
DECLARES ITSELF AS AN UPGRADE OF SITE, OFTEN THROUGH THE LENS OF MACHINED PRECISION.
THE UPPER ROCKRIDGE RESIDENCE PUSHES THE BOSS AGAINST THE PRAGMATISM OF CAPTURING
DRAMATIC VIEWS, AND THE COMPLEXITIES OF WORKING AT A SLOPED SITE. WORKING DIRECTLY UNDER
THE ARCHITECT RANDOLPH RUIZ, I WAS TASKED PREDOMINANTLY WITH DESIGNING FOR INTERNAL
FINISHES FROM SCHEMATIC INTERIOR ELEVATIONS TO COMPILING SPECIFICATIONS; CREATING
ORTHOGONAL DRAWINGS FOR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT, DETAILING
