44TH SEASON | SUMMER 2016 | 1

Page 4: 2016 Playbill

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 44th Season of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Nevada’s largest professional, non-profit theater and provider of educational outreach programming! Forty-four years of Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe is a remarkable achievement made possible by the visionary founders and leaders of this company, upon whose shoulders we all stand, and supported by the extraordinary generosity of this community, our board of directors, staff, volunteers, and the many artists who have created hundreds of evenings of magic under the stars.

Following the great success of last season’s return to producing two plays in revolving rep, this summer we once again offer a masterpiece from the Shakespearean canon, The Comedy of Errors, playing with a great American, off-Broadway musical, Forever Plaid. In 2010, when we made the decision to scale production down to a single play, we set a goal to restore the Festival to a healthy financial position and a stable operating model. With the support of our community of patrons, donors, and ticket buyers, and the development of a unique producing model with our strategic partners, Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Great Lakes Theater, we have stabilized our finances and are delighted to continue our two show season this summer. We hope you will find the combination of a single company of actors performing Shakespeare and a musical to be exciting and rewarding. After all, the two forms have so much in common: soliloquies and solos, the elevated language of Shakespeare’s poetry and the lyrical poetry of musical theater, the fluid movement from scene to scene and multiple locations, heightened emotions and grand spectacle! We sincerely encourage you to see both plays this season and let us know what you think of this continuing experiment.

Our work carries on year-round, beyond the setting of Sand Harbor, through our educational outreach programming. Our in-school residency program, InterACT, brings Shakespeare alive in the classroom for approximately 5,000 students each year with exciting interactive workshops. InterACT has become an essential part of arts education throughout our region’s schools. Along with InterACT, our D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program continues to bring free Shakespeare to over 3,500 children and their families each summer with performances throughout the region. For a full schedule of Young Shakespeare performance dates and locations, and to learn more about how you can support our educational programming, please visit our website.

Special recognition must be given to our partners at the Nevada State Parks who welcomed the company to Sand Harbor in 1976 and have worked with us ever since to develop one of the most beautiful settings for theater in the world, and to the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, who has provided our administrative offices within the Donald W. Reynolds Community Nonprofit Center since 2002.

There simply is not the time or space in this note to thank the thousands of people who have made this season a reality. As you look through our program and walk through the theater, you will see the names of many who have kept the lights on over the years; imagine that each name represents hundreds of others who have also given their time and passion to this company—to all, our deepest thanks and gratitude!

Above all, thank you for joining us this evening. We hope you will consider becoming a member of the Festival family by making a tax-deductible contribution to our annual fund. Memberships begin at $75 and support Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s productions at Sand Harbor and our educational outreach programming throughout northern Nevada.

We are delighted to share our work with you in this exceptional setting! – CHARL IE AND BOB

44TH SEASON | SUMMER 2016 | 7

Page 10: 2016 Playbill

Synopsis The play opens with the arrest of Egeon, a merchant from Syracuse. He has ventured into the town of Ephesus, where strict laws make it punishable by death for Syracusians to travel. Upon his arrest, Egeon tells the powerful Solinus, Duke of Ephesus, why he has journeyed into forbidden land. Many years ago, Egeon was shipwrecked while sailing with his wife, Emilia, and two pairs of identical twins––their twin sons, both named Antipholus, and their twin servants, both named Dromio. In the course of the storm, Egeon became separated from his wife, one of their sons, and one of their servants. He has not seen the trio since. Eighteen years later, Egeon allowed his remaining son and that son’s servant, Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse, to leave their town to search for their long-lost siblings. After many years of searching the globe, they had not returned, so Egeon went in search of them, subsequently arriving in Ephesus. The Duke, moved by the old man’s tale, postpones Egeon’s

sentence, giving him until nightfall to produce a thousand marks in ransom, or else be put to death. At this point in the action, Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse arrive in Ephesus, and the Shakespearean farce commences as everyone––including both sets of identical twins—confuse each others’ identities. Antipholus of Syracuse is invited to dinner at the home of Antipholus of Ephesus and unknowingly dines with his twin’s wife, Adriana. Angelo, a local merchant, mistakenly gives a gold chain commissioned by Antipholus of Ephesus to Antipholus of Syracuse, telling him he’ll return later for payment. When Antipholus of Ephesus refuses to pay for the chain unwittingly given to his brother, Angelo has him arrested. Meanwhile, given the men’s perplexing behavior, Adriana and her sister, Luciana, are convinced that Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus have gone mad, which leads them to forcibly restrain them and seek out a doctor. When Adriana later encounters Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse, she thinks they’ve

escaped, as the pair from Syracuse flee seeking refuge. Soon after, Antipholus and Dromio of Ephesus actually do escape from the doctor and arrive to petition the Duke, just as Egeon is being led to his death. In the midst of everyone attempting to tell their varying accounts of the mystifying day, Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse arrive with the abbess––who turns out to be Emilia, Egeon’s long-lost wife. The twins quickly sort out their identities in the presence of the Duke, and in the end, Egeon is released from his sentence and reunited with his wife and sons; Antipholus of Ephesus is reconciled with his wife and reunited with his twin; Antipholus of Syracuse is betrothed to Adriana’s sister Luciana; and the twin Dromios reunite, completing the happy ending.

Director’s Note A Conversation with the Director Producing Artistic Director Charles Fee sat down with colleague Daniel Hahn to discuss his thoughts on directing The Comedy of Errors.

Daniel Hahn: I understand your production design has been inspired by images of Rio de Janeiro and Carnival. Can you talk about how you and the design team developed these ideas?

Charles Fee: I often begin my work on the Shakespeare plays by listening to music, trying to capture the mood and rhythm that I’m feeling in the text – and, on a really practical note, thinking through the inevitable scene shifts we will need onstage. Shakespeare sets The Comedy of Errors in Ephesus, a large and dangerous city on a bay, a truly exotic port where Antipholus and Dromio come ashore looking for their twin brothers. The first thing that struck me about the setting for this play was how vivid Shakespeare’s description of the city is in the text. Antipholus of Syracuse describes it very early in the first act of the play: They say this town is full of cozenage (cheating),As nimble jugglers that deceive the eye,Dark-working sorcerers that change the mind,Soul-killing witches that deform the body,Disguised cheaters, prating mountebanks,And many such-like libertines of sin:If it prove so, I will be gone the sooner.…I greatly fear my money is not safe.

We’re in a town full of sorcerers, jugglers and witches—a city in which anything can happen—someone could steal your identity! At the same time there is a wildly romantic, sexy side to this play. All of this made me think of the first time I heard Bossa Nova—I was really young and my dad played the Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto recording of “The Girl From Ipanema” and it was so exotic and beautiful and . . . you get the point. So Bossa Nova led to Rio and Carnival and all of the pieces seemed to come together: the rhythm, the romance, the beach, the city.

DH: “The Girl From Ipanema” was released in the early 1960s, so is that the time frame for this production?

CF: Yes and no. I don’t like to be overly literal in our settings of the plays, so you’ll hear both contemporary Brazilian music and the ’60s stuff; and the clothes range from the late ’50s to today. In a sense, we’re using the same conventions that Shakespeare’s company would have, using anachronism to

deliberately connect a contemporary audience to the text.

DH: Did the geographical similarities between Rio and Ephesus also seem important?

CF: Absolutely. The characters refer to the bay several times and ships waiting to depart—you have to justify that in any setting of the play…and it’s important to remember, while I am imagining Ephesus to be like Rio, the play and the text still refer to Ephesus, we haven’t changed the text. The Comedy of Errors was probably written by 1591, perhaps slightly earlier, so there’s a certain artistic satisfaction in knowing that the setting for our production is a city that was actually developing at the same time Shakespeare was writing his play.

DH: Will Rio’s famous Carnival atmosphere factor into your production in any way?

CF: Definitely. This is the ultimate play about mistaken identity, and a city filled with costumed, partying revelers allows for a lot of fluidity of identity. If you show up at a masked ball wearing

the same costume as someone else, no one is likely to think you’re actually twins, right? Again, this helps solve technical problems in the play and it supports the confusions or “errors” central to the plot.

DH: The early comedies of Shakespeare oftentimes are not given credit for their depth of emotion or the questions they raise for an audience. What issues in this play have a resonance with you as an artist?

CF: I don’t share that opinion of the early comedies by the way . . . The Comedy of Errors sets the emotional stakes very high with a shipwreck in which an entire family, lost at sea, become separated from each other— it is the most fundamental fear for all human beings, the fear of separation. From here the play explores one of Shakespeare’s constant themes: identity: who we are, and the tension between our public mask and the authentic self. The device of twins in The Comedy of Errors only serves to

amplify these themes. Antipholus gives voice to his anxiety in his first scene in the play:“I to the world am like a drop of water That in the ocean seeks another drop, Who, falling there to find his fellow forth, (Unseen, inquisitive) confounds himself. So I, to find a mother and a brother, In quest of them, unhappy, lose myself.”

It’s a moving speech and we’ll hear these ideas again in other Shakespeare texts, spoken by Romeo, Hamlet, Viola…on and on. The structure of The Comedy of Errors—with its relentless pace of comedic action— is bracketed by a deeply dramatic situation: the impending death sentence of the twins’ father, Egeon. The “tragic” frames the “comedic.” Shakespeare creates a world out of balance, out of harmony, only to correct it in the end (as he does in almost all of the comedies) by re-uniting the family, and re-establishing harmony through marriage. Quite honestly, I think it’s a beautiful play.

Musical Director’s Note Stuart Ross, book writer and creator of Forever Plaid, was just a young boy of five years old in 1956 when his older brother went off to college and left him a collection of vinyl 45s. It included The Four Freshman, The Four Aces and the Four Lads. His parents also owned… wait for it… a diner! Who better to write a 1950s jukebox musical about a foursome of aspiring clean-cut, close-harmony singing, plaid-wearing young men?

Ross has written us the story of Frankie, Smudge, Sparky and Jinx, a quartet returning from the afterlife (they’ve been killed in a collision with a bus full of Catholic girls) to play their dream gig. With 28 songs including “Three Coins in a Fountain, Lady of Spain and Shangri-La,” we’re transported to a time where

4-part boy bands harmonized their way from gig to gig. The tightly arranged vocals are lush, romantic and swoon-worthy. It’s a style that personified romance and innocence, a style that both parents and kids listened to together in the 1950s.

It’s important to remember that Forever Plaid is not a spoof or parody. It is truly earnest and sincere: it just happens to be funny along the way. There’s innocence and charm in the notion that 4 high school chums might rehearse in the family basement, might talk of young love and squabble about dance moves and harmony parts. The true joy of a jukebox musical is that you could strip the set and lights, and enjoy a concert of 28 nostalgic tunes that transport you to a bygone era of music. Forever Plaid is no exception.– DAVE PEP IN , Musical Director

Page 26: 2016 Playbill

THE D.G. MENCHETTI YOUNG SHAKESPEARE PROGRAMSince 2002 the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program has entertained over 60,000 children and their families around the region.

Join us this summer as we present an hour-long adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors specifically designed for children and adults alike!

Join the cast of the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program as the cast of local professional actors team up with some of the area's middle and high school students to present Shakespeare's hilarious tale of mistaken identities and family reunited, The Comedy of Errors. This interactive hour-long adaptation of the Bard's riotous comedy is sure to entertain the whole family. Twenty-three years ago Syracusian, Antipholus, an identical twin and his companion Dromio, also an identical twin boy, were separated from their brothers in a storm at sea. At eighteen they set off in search of their lost brothers. Eventually they arrive in Ephesus, not knowing that their long lost twins live there. Hilarity abounds as mistaken identities and confusion lead to the unlikely reunion of a family.

All performances are FREE, but reservations are required due to capacity limits at each venue. Visit LakeTahoeShakespeare.com to reserve your tickets.
