President’s WelcomeOn behalf of the IAP Australasian Division executive committee, it is my great pleasure to invite you to join us in the spectacular new International Convention Centre, Sydney from 2 – 4 June, 2017 for the 41st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian Division of the IAP. As in previous years, the conference will provide an extensive program including international keynote speakers, national speakers and topical companion club sessions.

From an international perspective, we have been fortunate enough to secure three impressive speakers: Dr Jason Hornick from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Dr Marisa Nucci from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA and Dr Alexander Laxar from The University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, USA. Their combined knowledge spans Surgical and Soft Tissue Pathology, Gynaecological Pathology, Molecular Pathology and Dermatopathology and they will be joined by a range of local speakers who will share their knowledge and expertise on a diverse range of anatomical pathology related topics.

Sydney is one of the world's most vibrant and beautiful destinations and the ICC Sydney, which is opening in December, will be the Asia Pacific's premier integrated convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct. It is set amongst restaurants, retail and a vibrant public domain on Darling Harbour yet only a moment's walk to Australia's largest CBD and surrounding cultural quarters.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming you to our wonderful city in 2017 and sharing our exciting program with you. The event brochure will be mailed to all our members shortly. Online Registrations and Abstract Submissions are open from this month. Please check our website www.iap-aus-conference.com.au for deadline dates and all other information.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year.

She also serves as a Consultant Pathologist for the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center where she is an Associate Member of the Gynecologic Cancer and Sarcoma Programs. Dr. Nucci was born in Newark, NJ. She did her undergraduate training at Haverford College and medical training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, and completed an AP residency as well as the Women’s and Perinatal Pathology Fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s

Hospital. She has been on staff at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital since 1996. She is past president of the New England Society of Pathologists and serves on the editorial boards of The International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology, Human Pathology, and Advances in Anatomic Pathology. MOLECULAR PATHOLOGYDr Alexander Lazar, MD, PhDThe University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center, USADr. Lazar is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. His clinical work there focuses on the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors and solid tumor molecular testing, currently focused on next generation based sequencing for therapeutic selection and triage to clinical trials. As founding Director of the ACGME accredited Soft Tissue Pathology Fellowship Program, he is training the next generation of bone and soft tissue pathologists and translational researchers. His research has centered on the molecular characteristics of many sarcoma types for use in diagnosis, correlation with clinical outcome and searching for novel therapeutic interventions with colleagues such

as Dr. Keila Torres in the multidisciplinary Sarcoma Research Center. This work is published in more than 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, and books edited. As Senior Associate Editor of Laboratory Investigation and as a member of additional editorial boards, Dr. Lazar is deeply committed to the peer review and publication process. He has leadership positions within the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) for sarcoma staging and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) with oversight of the protocols for defined pathology reporting of sarcomas, including molecular diagnostics. He participated in producing the 2013 World Health Organization (WHO) classification system for bone and soft tissue tumors. As a result of this collaborative work with numerous colleagues, these three systems are now completely aligned, creating a uniform system for the diagnosis, reporting and staging of sarcomas used and adapted throughout the world.

Becoming a member of the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology

The International Academy of Pathology is the largest professional body of pathologists worldwide and has over 60 divisions throughout the world. Meetings are held in many countries throughout the year that maybe of interest to all members.

The Australasian division aims to foster education, research and advance knowledge in pathology and our Annual Scientific Meeting is a major focus. Membership funds are necessary to run the division and to both ensure a successful annual meeting and support other activities of the division.

Membership of the Australasian division entitles you to:

1. A discounted registration rate not only to our Annual Scientific Meetings but also to attend any of the meetings of other IAPdivisions.2. Access to educational materials in the members only section of the new IAP website (http://www.iapaus. org.au/index.php)3. Discounted subscriptions to the journals Modern Pathology and Laboratory Investigation4. Receive our Quarterly newsletters which will provide you with an overview of our current activities and keep you up to dateof upcoming educational activities.5. Support the education of pathologists and trainees in the Asia-Pacific Region including the provision of the AnnualPathology Symposium in Fiji and through a number of bursaries for pathologists from the Asia-Pacific region to attend ourAnnual Scientific Meeting.

Becoming an IAP Member is a simple process. If you are an Anatomical pathologist/registrar wishing to becomea member of the Australasian Division of the IAP, just complete the attached Application form (in the next page) with the payment details and email it to [email protected]. Once a member, annual renewal of your membership is necessary to maintain your membership status.

We also encourage you to invite your colleagues to become members of the IAP. Application forms are available in our website www.iap-aus.org.au.

If you have any questions regarding our membership, please email our Secretariat Staff at [email protected].
