    Nagoya is not only famous for its liveliness, but also for its various, must-seehistorical sites and points of interest including Nagoya Castle, shrines and

    temples, and resource centers, which have invaluable cultural merit.

    Must-see Sights

    Nagoya Castle

    TokugawaenSakae Area

    The Tokugawa Art Museum

    In 1612, Nagoya Castle was builtas a residence of the Tokugawafamily. It was rebuilt in 1959.The pair of golden"shachi" on its soaringroof symbolize the castleand the city of Nagoya.

    Shirotori Garden

    Only a few minutes walk fromNagoya Congress Center, thereis a traditional Japanese gardenwhere you can enjoy thebeautiful scenery and Matcha-powdered green tea.

    This bustling, vibrant red temple isespecially crowded during holidaysand festivals. A great place fordiscounted goods, "Osu ShoppingMalls," is located beside thetemple.

    The second lord, Mitsumoto of theOwari Branch of Tokugawafamily, settled here to retire in1695. It is a stroll stylelandscaped garden centeredaround an inner pond reminiscentof the feudal lord grounds.

    Atsuta Shrine

    Surrounded by 1,000year-old camphor trees,Atsuta Shrine, with its 1,900

    year history, is one of threegrand shrines in Japan.Notable attractions hereinclude "Nobunaga Wall,"and Atsuta Jingu Museum.

    This museum contains historicartifacts from the Owari Branchof the Tokugawa family. TheIllustrated Tale of Genji, adesignated national treasure, isthe centerpiece of its collection.

    Sakae is one of the twomajor shopping areas inNagoya, along with theNagoya Station area.Department stores and luxurybrand stores areconcentrated here, and filledwith the latest fashion trends.Page 13-14

    Toyota Commemorative Museumof Industry and Technology

    Jointly established by the 13 companiesof the Toyota Group, textile machinery

    and automobiles are the focus of theexhibits. Manufacturing machine history,from its early beginnings to present daycomputer controlled machines, is ondisplay with the opportunity to operatesome of the machines yourself.

    Higashiyama Zoo andBotanical Gardens

    This is a comprehensive park consistingof a zoo, botanical garden andamusement park. A nocturnal animalhouse is also a very popular attraction.The botanical garden has a largegreenhouse, and the Manyo Passage

    and flower gardens are a nice place tovisit.

    Typical Japanese food like sushi and tempura are tasty, but trying uniquelocal cuisine is also a must for the palate. Nagoya has many unique dishessuch as misonikomi udon and temmusu,among others.

    Local Dishes of Nagoya

    The followings are products bearing their area names, and whose traditionsare carried on by highly skilled artisans. These items are great for souvenirs.

    Souvenirs of Nagoya

    Misokatsu

    A Nagoya favorite, these breadedpork cutlets are served with a thickmiso sauce and other side dishesto complete a lunch or dinner set.

    Temmusu

    A mouthful size rice ballcontaining fried shrimp.

    Kishimen

    Broad, flat wheat noodles in abroth with soy sauce andvarious toppings like tempuraor green onions. Try it atrestaurants or even on theplatforms of big train stations.

    Nagoya Cochin

    Nagoya Cochin, a variety ofchicken, is well known for itscrispiness and delicious taste.You can enjoy it cooked in anumber of ways.

    Tebasaki is deep-friedchicken wingtips. Oncetasted, it is never forgotten.The spicy flavor also goesvery well with beer or sake,

    Japanese rice wine.

    Hitsumabushi

    A famous Nagoyadish of grilled eelserved on rice withvarious condimentslike Japanesehorseradish.

    Nagoya Sensu (folding fans)

    Dating back to the mid-18th century,Nagoya Sensu traces its origins to a familyof Kyoto fan manufacturers. Made ofpaper and bamboo, these ceremonial fansoften bear fine calligraphy or designs ofgreat elegance.

    Nagoya Yuzen (hand-painted yuzendyeing & stenciled yuzen dyeing)

    These elegantly designed garments resultfrom an intricate process of freehanddrawing and dyeing. Stenciled Yuzendyeing calls for the dye to be brushed onthrough paper stencils. To make a colorful

    Yuzen fabric, numerous stencils-

    each for aspecific color-are employed.

    Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori (tie-dyeing)

    This is a tie-dyeing technique from the late 16thcentury used to create elegant and refineddesigns. Here are many kinds of tie-dyedgoods, such as clothing materials and smallarticles.

    Cloisonn

    Originating from Dutch cloisonn over acentury and a half ago, Owari-Shippo utilizesvarious enamels filled into cells on a metalframe. The product is heated to an extremelyhigh temperature and polished, resulting inbeautiful plates or vases.

    Misonikomi

    Nagoyans eat this version of udoncooked in a miso base soup withvarious vegetables and meats.

    Wetlands designated under the Ramsar

    Convention Fujimae Tidal FlatThe Fujimae Tidal Flat is an approximately

    300-hectare tidal flat at the mouths of the Shonai,Shinkawa and Nikko rivers as they flow into the

    Port of Nagoya. The Fujimae Tidal Flat wasdesignated under the Ramsar Convention on

    Wetlands on November 18, 2002. It isinternationally known as Japans largest stopover

    site for migratory birds, visited by roughly 60species of shorebirds.

    SUBWAY

    Fare:Priced according to destination; 200-320

    Tickets:Sold at vending machines. Prepaid cards also available.

    Fare Adjustment Machine:At the exit, an alarm will go off if

    your ticket is short of the appropriate fare. When you are not sure

    if you paid enough or have extended the journey, go to the fare

    adjustment machine (orange) before exiting. Insert the ticket into

    the machine and a light will display the remaining fare. Put in

    money and use the new ticket exit. Change available.

    One-Day Ticket

    A magnetic card that allows you to ride on subways and city

    buses for a full day.

    Fare:are: 850 (600 on weekends, holidays and 8th of month),740 for subway only, 600 for city bus only

    Weekend Eco Pass

    The Weekend Eco Pass is a one-day pass available only on

    Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays (and includes days of

    operation under the special train schedule for Saturday, Sunday,and national holidays) and the 8th day of each month,

    (Environment Conservation Day) for city bus and subway.

    The manaca IC Card

    The limited express has a first class car that requires a 350

    surcharge.
