Cougars to play five teams in Mary Nutter Classic this weekend

PROVO, Utah – Following a 4-1 finish at the DeMarini Classic, BYU softball is heading to Cathedral City, California, to face five teams, including two top-25 teams, in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II from Feb. 25-27.

Behind current West Coast Conference pitcher of the week McKenna Bull, the Cougars won four of five last weekend, including two shutouts against Grand Canyon and Boise State. The lone loss came against Colorado State in eight innings. Bull totaled 35 strikeouts in the four games she pitched, allowing just nine walks.

New Mexico State | Thursday, Feb. 25, 1 p.m. PST The Aggies (9-2) are fresh off of a 4-2 record at the Troy Cox Classic, shutting out both Creighton and Western Michigan. New Mexico State finished with a 47-16 record in the 2015 season, taking first place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 14-1 conference record on the way to a 1-2 record in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Cougars are 4-0 all-time against the Aggies, the last win coming in 2012.

Bethune-Cookman | Thursday, Feb. 25, 3:30 PST The Wildcats (3-8) are currently on a seven-game losing streak. They finished last season with a 22-29 overall record and second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division behind Savan-nah State. This is just the second game in the history of these two teams. BYU won the contest 5-4 back in 2005.

No. 11 UCLA | Friday, Feb. 26, 3 p.m. PST With a 7-3 record, the No. 11 UCLA Bruins are coming off of a 3-2 finish at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I. Two of the wins were in five innings. In 2015, UCLA finished with a 51-12 record and a trip to the NCAA Women’s College World Series. The Cougars have a 1-3 series record against the Bruins, with the last game favoring the Cougars 6-4 back in 2011.

Cal State Fullerton | Saturday, Feb. 27, 5 p.m. PST After finishing with a 5-1 record at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic last weekend, the Titans are currently 8-2 overall. The loss last weekend came in a 10-inning battle with Idaho State. Cal State Fullerton had a 34-22 record in 2015, good for fourth place in the Big West. The Cougars are 3-1 against the Titans overall, the last game resulting in a 11-0 loss for BYU in five innings in 2015.

No. 17 Missouri | Saturday, Feb. 27, 8 p.m. PST Undefeated Mizzou (6-0) came into the season fresh off of a 41-17 finish in 2015. Missouri advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, falling to UCLA. This season the Tigers have won by an average of 7.5 runs in the six games played. BYU has played just one game against Missouri, which was a 4-0 Cougar win back in 2008.

Live stats will be available for all games through the BYU softball schedule page.

2016 WCC PRESEASON POLL

PROVO, Utah – BYU softball was voted to finish first and four players were recognized in the West Coast Conference preseason poll released on Wednesday.

After winning two-consecutive WCC championships, the Cougars were picked in the pre-season to repeat for a third time. BYU received five first-place votes to put them at the top, while Pacific and Loyola Marymount were voted to finish in second and third, respectively.

In the 2016 All-WCC Preseason Softball Team, BYU had four players recognized: Gordy Bravo, Ashley Thompson, Coco Tauali’i Bond and McKenna Bull. These four players also received WCC postseason honors in the 2015 season.

Senior midfielder Bravo is the reigning WCC Player of the Year after hitting .444 with four home runs, two triples, nine doubles, 76 hits and 30 RBI, notching the second best sin-gle-season average in school history. She started all 54 games of the 2015 season.

Junior Bull was last season’s WCC Pitcher of the Year. She was also on the NFCA All-Pa-cific Region Third Team and named College Sports Madness’ Pitcher of the Year as well. In 2015, Bull set the BYU single-season record for wins (34), strikeouts (256), innings pitched (257.1) and complete games (29). She led the WCC in strikeouts (64), ERA (1.55) and wins with an 11-0 record in WCC play.

Junior first baseman Thompson was named to the 2015 All-WCC First Team and senior third baseman Bond was on the second team. Thompson ranked in the top five in WCC play in seven categories: OBP (.500), runs scored (15), runs batted in (19), home runs (4), total bases (31) and stolen bases (4). Bond was first in the WCC with six home runs, 15 runs batted in and a .763 slugging percentage in conference play.

BYU’s season starts a week from Thursday in Tempe, Ariz., against San Jose State in the Kajikawa Classic.

Eakin is entering his 14th season as the Cougars’ head coach and his 17th season at BYU overall.

Eakin was named head coach in July 2002 after working as an assistant coach since the softball program’s inception in 2000. Since that time he has led the Cougars to five Mountain West Conference championships, one Western Athletic Conference tournament championship, two West Coast Conference championship and 12 NCAA tournament appearances.

The 2015 WCC Coach of the Year (second-consecutive year) has coached 12 All-Americans, nine conference players of the year, four conference freshmen of the year, and three conference pitchers of the year during his tenure.

In 2010, Eakin guided the Cougars to 46 wins, the most in school history, as BYU advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time ever with wins over East Carolina and host Texas before ending its season at national runner-up Arizona. The Cougars finished second in the country in batting average, seventh in scoring and ninth in slugging percentage as a team.

Known as one of the best hitting coaches in the country, Eakin has helped BYU finish in the top-ten nationally six times in slugging percentage, six times in home runs per game, four times in batting average and four times in scoring.

In addition to his duties at BYU, Eakin was also an assistant coach and hitting coach for the USA National Team in 2009. In the summer of 2010, Eakin helped guide the National Team to a 17-2 record as USA won the World Championship in Venezuela, the World Cup in Oklahoma and the Japan Cup championship in Sendai, Japan.

Before entering the coaching ranks, Eakin was a successful baseball and softball player. After playing collegiate baseball at the University of Utah, Eakin signed with the Oakland Athletics organization where he played for three years.

Eakin went on to join the United States All-Star team, playing in three U.S. Olympic sports festivals in 1986, 1993 and 1994, winning bronze, silver and gold, respectively. While on the team, Eakin was honored on the ISC All-World First Team and was an ASA All-American. He would later go on to play shortstop on the internationally ranked Larry H. Miller Toyota Fast Pitch team, eventually earning induction into the Utah Fast Pitch Hall of Fame in 1998.

Eakin is a native of Holladay, Utah, and graduated from Granite High. He currently resides in Sandy, Utah, and is married to Barbi. They are the parents of three children (Alicia, Ryan & Parker) and have five grandsons.
