Improvisation Workshop Recap In January SEMSA students had the opportunity to

work on improvisation in a fun weekend workshop

with guest clinician Drew Robertson from Rochester,

NY. It was great to see all the students thinking

outside the box and allowing themselves to try new

things on their instruments. Students were given

basic guidelines for each improvisation game. It was

exciting to see the energy and enthusiasm of the

students as they tried something new and stepped

outside their comfort zone.

- Kathleen Lamb, Improvisation

Workshop Coordinator

It was a

pleasure to lead the improvisation workshop in

Rochester, MN with the teachers of SEMSA. Not only

was the entire event impeccably organized, but the

church location was ideal for both classes and the

final concert. I cannot be more grateful to SEMSA,

the teachers and parents for their planning,

hospitality, and encouragement throughout the

event.

The class sizes were perfect for facilitating good

improvisation and variety, while being small enough

to allow each student to have frequent opportunities

to create. By the end of the first class, each of the

groups was motivated and enthusiastic to try

improvisation again. The beginner groups

progressed nicely from a basic rhythm machine to

more advanced games involving melody fragments

and ostinati. The intermediate groups had great

success with an orchestration game and the

challenging passacaglia, while advanced groups

ventured into complex time signatures and

modulation. I was incredibly impressed by rapid

progress of the advanced group, and encouraged the

students to form autonomous chamber ensembles

for the final jam session.

On the final concert, each of the groups performed

an improvisation game of their choice. The last three

performances of the evening, two string quartets

and the cadenza game, were incredibly impressive

and demonstrated just how much each student had

come into their own. I am astounded by the

enthusiasm and ability of the students of SEMSA to

rapidly acquire the skill of improvisation and

perform with fluency and musicality in the span of a

few short classes. The workshop was an

unforgettable opportunity, and it was a genuine

pleasure to work with all of the wonderful parents,

teachers, and students!

Thank you for inviting me to lead the improvisation

workshop!

Suzuki Summer Camps (Dave Hubka)

Various members of our family have gone in different years to Suzuki Summer Camps at Stevens Point, WI, Beaver

Creek, CO, and Ann Arbor, MI. They have all been outstanding, and are well recommended. The one is Stevens

Point, WI is by far the closest and most convenient to go to from Rochester.

The definitive listing of these camps is at https://suzukiassociation.org/events/institutes/

The one in Stevens Point is described at https://suzukiassociation.org/events/loc/american-suzuki-institute/

To encourage SEMSA member families to attend a Suzuki Summer Camp, there is a $100 scholarship available for

each member family when they have attended their first camp. Read on …

Georgia Daniels' Scholarship Information -- Applications are due each year by June 1st.

Suzuki Institutes are like a week-long Gasshuku! Those who have attended SEMSA’s Gasshuku workshop in the

past can tell you how much fun they are. The institutes are patterned after Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s summer school in

Japan. Teachers, students and parents participate in music instruction, parent talks, motivation and enjoyment.

SEMSA offers the Georgia Daniels' scholarship for families who are first time Suzuki Institute attendees.

The Georgia Daniels' Suzuki Scholarship is offered by SEMSA to help introduce families to Institute. As such, the

scholarship is not tied to financial need, is restricted to a one-time award per family, and is only available the first

time any family member attends Institute.

The process is simple and documented here, but feel free to talk to your SEMSA teacher or Jan Glowacki

([email protected]) about it as well:

Step 1 - Complete the Scholarship application form and submit it to the contact on the form by June 1st.

Step 2 - Register and attend a Suzuki Summer Institute

Step 3 - After attending a Summer Institute, provide the following to SEMSA:

(1) Proof of registration, payment, and attendance

(2) Submit a short article to be published in the SEMSA Newsletter

Step 4 - The SEMSA Treasurer will mail a $100 check to the scholarship applicants who have met the requirements

Gasshuku at Eagle Bluff 2016 Friday, November 11 – Saturday, November 12

Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center

Lanesboro, MN

The Southeastern Minnesota Suzuki Association will be presenting an

all instrument music workshop for our Suzuki students and parents this fall.

Past SEMSA Gasshuku music workshops have had attendance of over 150

bass, cello, flute, harp, piano, viola, and violin students. Participating students

have included; SEMSA students, Suzuki students from the Twin Cities, and

students from throughout the upper mid-western states. Planning for the 2016

Gasshuku at Eagle Bluff has been underway since this past August. The

Japanese word "gasshuku" means learning together as a community, in a

setting related to nature, and suggests a gathering devoted to intensive practice and enjoyment as a learning

community. This special workshop weekend in November promises to be an exciting two days of music making,

learning, and friendship.

In addition to the Suzuki based repertoire classes, students will participate in music enrichment classes.

The workshop will close with a concert that promises to highlight the variety of musical experiences of the

weekend. All this effort is done in order to provide SEMSA students with an informative and memorable music

learning experience.

Middle and high school students, ages 12 and older, will be invited to attend the Friday and Saturday

program, staying overnight in the Eagle Bluff facilities on Friday night. The Rochester Public School students do

not have class on Friday, November 11. The middle and high school students will check-in early Friday afternoon,

then attend a nature class under the direction of Eagle Bluff staff. The students will spend the remainder of the day

attending music classes with nationally know Suzuki clinicians, eating dinner, and participating in evening social

activities under the direction of Eagle Bluff staff. These students will attend a full day of music classes on Saturday

and participate in the final concert at 4:00PM.

Elementary grade students will attend the Saturday program with classes beginning at 9:00AM. All

students will have six hours of classes on Saturday. Parents are expected to attend Saturday with their student.

Saturday’s classes will consist of sessions on the student’s primary instrument and a variety of music enrichment

classes, plus a nature class taught be Eagle Bluff staff. All students and parents will enjoy lunch at the Eagle Bluff

dining facility Saturday afternoon. The workshop weekend will conclude with a 4:00PM final concert in which all

students will participate. Everyone will be packed up and on their way home from Eagle Bluff by 5:30PM on

Saturday.

The Southeastern Minnesota Suzuki Association invites nationally recognized Suzuki clinicians to

southeastern Minnesota to work with our Suzuki music students. Special presentations for parents, on topics

relevant to Suzuki parents, will be held the afternoon of Saturday, November 12. The SEMSA teachers have been

hard at work assembling a first rate ensemble of music clinicians. Many of the clinicians’ names you will

recognize from Suzuki Summer Institutes. The Gasshuku clinicians will be announced soon.

Registration materials for Gasshuku will be available in May. The Gasshuku brochure and registration

forms will be available from your child's lesson teacher or at the SEMSA group lessons in May.

Learning to play a musical instrument well is a rewarding, but demanding task. It requires daily practice,

weekly lessons, and year round dedication. A music workshop adds excitement to the learning routine for both the

student and parent.
