Cutting Directions

We will be cutting the panels. This will happen during the mystery.

1. STARCH Your FabricPress ALL your fabric using STARCH. I used a medium amount of starch. A light starching may not be enough to stabilize the fabric.

Starch your liberated panels, accent fabric and background fabric. The most important for heavier starch is the background fabric.

2. TRIM your accent fabric and background fabricWOF = Width of Fabric. Usually 42” to 45”. Varies by fabric.

1. Your fabric measures 42” (including selvedges). Don't trim. Leave selvedges on the fabric.

OR

2. Your fabric measures larger than 42” Trim one side of the fabric so that it measures 42”.

3. CUT your Accent FabricBaby/Lap Quilt.Cut (8) 1.25” by 42” rectangles

Sewing Your Bundles One at a Time. This avoids confusing the similar looking but different sized pieces.

Double check the length of your liberated panel strips. Mine grew a bit from pressing. They should measure 42”.

Use 1/4” seams throughout.Make sure you pin the seams before you sew.

1. Sew an accent fabric strip to each of the background strips along the 42” edge. Press to the accent fabric.

2. Sew a liberated panel strip between two accent fabric edges from Step 1. Press to the accent fabric. See photo below.

For the smaller quilt you will have (4) units and for the larger quilt you will have (8) units.

Each unit measure 14” by 42”. If the 14” measurement is not exact DON'T TRIM.

I had to do a slight modification to one of my blocks because of a rotary mistake.I decided that it would be safer to use scissors.

Small Quilt -

This was my “test quilt”.

Instead of making my own liberated panels I used a striped fabric.

I didn't have enough gray fabric to dothe borders so I borrowed an idea from some liberated quilters, Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston.

They use a lot of directional fabric intheir borders and sashes.

Large Quilt -

I made this quilt using African fabrics in my liberated panels.

A friend is celebrating her 50th birthday soon and just returned from an extensive trip to Africa.

I think she will like it.
