Monica Egert Smith2016 Chair, Leadership Dallas Alumni Association Board of Directors

Another year has come and gone, and another group of Leadership Dallas graduates has joined our growing and distinct fold. As an organization, we’ve covered a lot of ground this year and left many entities in Dallas better than we found them – the Leadership Dallas way.

This directory represents the hundreds of alumni who have walked before us, with us and after us, but all of whom carry the LD torch of creating the leaders, movers and shakers that keep our city, and our legacy, at the forefront.

Thank you for your continued commitment to not only Leadership Dallas, but to all it means to the Dallas Regional Chamber and all the businesses and organizations that call our city home. We do make a difference – every day and in every way.

It has been my privilege to serve as your chair of the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association Board, and I look forward to our paths continuing to cross.

ALUMNI INFORMATION

HistoryIn 1975, a group of young leaders realized that the future of the city is not a vast unknown over which we have no control, but rather the product of how community leaders manage choices and circumstances. With a desire to ensure future leadership in Dallas, they realized that potential leaders should develop a strong sense of community and awareness of alternatives. Leadership Dallas was created as a program of the Dallas Regional Chamber to provide well-balanced, experienced leaders representing a heterogeneous mix of races, sexes, income levels and occupations. The program was founded by George Dillman, Walter Humann, Charles Terrell, Rodger Meier, David Cooley and other recognized leaders.

For the first year, the Chamber’s Urban Affairs Department coordinated the program. With a finely tuned curriculum, it emerged as its own department in the Chamber directed in succession by Beverly Gandy, Scherry Johnson, Meg Read, Helen Giddings, Kay Hodges, Patti Clapp, Sharon Venable, Catherine Miller, Jennifer Barrow, Stephanie Miller, Lucinda Kisor Summerlin, Megan Inman, Kali Bailey, Lindsay Ayers, Cristina De Los Santos, Emily Morton, Sarah Pendleton and Kari Nelson. While making a continuous contribution to our city, Leadership Dallas has become a model for similar programs across the nation.

Leadership Dallas has served as a forum for overall training in civic responsibility for over 1,900 participants. Today, positions in its classes are eagerly sought. Participants are challenged to develop a vision for change and action, and they serve on civic, city and county boards and commissions. Those present and future leaders have developed a commitment to excellence that has historically been characteristic of Dallas leaders and is the continuing goal of Leadership Dallas.

Objectives1) Identify and motivate potential community leaders of diverse backgrounds2) Provide an outstanding educational experience emphasizing critical social and community issues3) Open a dialogue among emerging and current community leaders4) Challenge participants to apply their talents throughout the community

Leadership Dallas Alumni AssociationThe Leadership Dallas Alumni Association provides programs and networking opportunities to both strengthen Leadership Dallas alumni member connections and educate and inform members on pivotal issues so they can contribute their leadership to the greater Dallas region.

The Leadership Dallas Alumni Association Board (“LDAAB”) oversees and plans all alumni activities. The mission of the LDAAB is to educate the alumni of Leadership Dallas on significant issues facing the greater Dallas community and to encourage alumni to become active, engaged leaders in the community. The board achieves this mission through the support of four committees: Membership & Governance, Programs, Volunteer & Community Outreach and Communications.

LDAAB applications are available in September. If you are interested in applying for the board or would like more information on becoming an active participant of the alumni association, please contact LDAAB chair, Monica Egert Smith, or Kari Nelson with the Dallas Regional Chamber.

ScholarshipsBarry Barker Scholarship FundDuring the 1997-1998 program year, Leadership Dallas lost a longtime friend, Barry Barker. Barry was a graduate of the first Leadership Dallas class, served as president of the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association and chaired the curriculum committee. After his death, the Dallas Regional Chamber and the Leadership Dallas Alumni Association renamed its scholarship fund in Barry’s memory. The Barry Barker Scholarship Fund helps future leaders of Dallas with their Leadership Dallas tuition.

Patti Clapp Scholarship FundFor nearly 24 years, Patti Clapp served the Dallas Regional Chamber in a variety of critical roles, from Director of Leadership Development to Vice President of Education. In honor of one of our longest-serving and most-impactful, effective and influential leaders, the Patti Clapp Scholarship fund was created to help future leaders of the Dallas region with their Leadership Dallas Tuition.

Leadership Dallas Alumni in the Community Day

In 2012, the Volunteer & Outreach committee organized the first annual LDA in the Community Day which was held in January 2013 in West Dallas. Each year since, Community Day has drawn more than 100 Alumni to serve several non-profit agencies in one area of our community. The event offers an opportunity to give back while enjoying the fellowship with Alumni. In previous years, Alumni worked together in South Dallas, lent their talents to Old East Dallas, and worked tirelessly in Northwest Dallas. Planning is currently underway for the 5th Annual LDA in the Community Day supporting Dallas City Center in January 2017.

To join us in volunteering or to donate to this great cause, bookmark www.DallasChamber.org/events and check back often.

Michael AlostKDC Real Estate(214) [email protected]

I grew up in the small college town of Natchitoches, Louisiana. My home town is still a classic southern community, supported by agriculture, light industry and a state university. My family enjoyed the advantages a college town offers, including recreation in the surrounding pine hills and farm delta.

With a degree from my home town university, I started a career in education. After marrying my college sweetheart, we moved to College Station, Texas, where I enrolled in A&M and changed my career to architecture. After four years in Aggie Land, we returned to Shreveport, Louisiana where I became a partner in an architectural firm. I changed careers again as our practice evolved from architecture to real estate development in the early 2000’s. While in Shreveport, my wife Becky and I raised two children, John Michael, now 24 and Melissa, now 21.

In 2013, I got the opportunity to join KDC Real Estate Development in Dallas. We had fond memories of our Texas tenure. With our children off at college, and my younger brother already a Dallas resident, the opportunity for relocation was timely. Since joining KDC, I have been fortunate to work on the State Farm Regional Headquarters and CityLine development in Richardson. Currently, I’m working on the new Toyota North American Headquarters in Plano.

I am a dedicated runner (though very slow), cyclist (slower still) and fly fisherman. My interests include cooking and reading. I also enjoy collecting artwork, Native American pottery and good Tequilas.

My goal is to build new relationships through the Dallas Leadership program, so that I may engage and contribute back to my new home town of Dallas.
