The Bulldogs are 7-9 during this portion of their schedule after crushing No. 25 Ga. Tech 13-5 in Athens Tuesday. After VU, Georgia plays host to No. 9 Ole Miss to complete the toughest stretch in school history. Georgia’s strength of schedule ranks among the best in the country. Overall, the Bulldogs are 8-11 against ranked teams this year and their RPI (currently No. 28 by the NCAA) continues to climb. The Bulldogs are eyeing a spot in the SEC Tournament and an overall mark above .500 to qualify for an NCAA Regional at-large bid. The Bulldogs were in a similar spot in 2011 and accomplished this feat. They finished the regular season 28-29 (16-14 SEC) and went 3-1 at the SEC Tournament. They earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Corvallis (Ore.) Regional and went 2-2 to cap the year with a 33-32 mark. Last year, Auburn earned an NCAA at-large bid after going 13-17 in the SEC (34-22 regular season) with an RPI in the 20s. Series Preview: The Bulldogs lead the Vanderbilt series 97-88, however the No. 6 Commodores have won eight straight over Georgia. The last time the Bulldogs captured a series over VU came in 2008 when it clinched the SEC title in Nashville. Georgia won the series two games to one. Vanderbilt dropped a road series to Tennes- see last weekend, winning the opener 6-0 behind ace Jordan Sheffield (6-2, 2.54 ERA) but then lost the next two contests 2-1 and 5-3. They beat Austin Peay 8-5 Tuesday. Georgia’s leading hitters are juniors Skyler Weber (.306-2-23, 10 SB) and Stephen Wrenn (.293-3-20, 10 SB) while the RBI leader is sophomore Keegan McGovern (.264-5-27) who also has a team-high 32 walks. In SEC action, Wrenn is batting .333-3-8 while King is next at .323-1-8. Junior Robert Tyler headlines the Bulldog pitching staff at 3-3 with a 2.53 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 57 in- nings. Senior Heath Holder (2-2, 2.64 ERA) leads the SEC in lowest opponent’s batting average at .152 while Tyler is second at .177. Tyler and junior LHP Connor Jones (5-3, 5.01 ERA) will start the first two games of the VU series while game three’s starter is TBA. VU will start Sheffield in game one, sophomore Kyle Wright (4-3, 1.88 ERA) in game two and game three is TBA. Georgia is batting .252 with an ERA of 4.39 and fielding .968. In SEC action, the Bulldogs are hitting .261 with a 5.11 ERA and fielding .960. Last Week In The SEC: Georgia went 1-2 at No. 2 Florida and handed the Gators their first series- opening loss of the season. Junior Robert Tyler was superb in a no decision last Thursday, pitching eight innings and allowing one run with nine strikeouts. Senior Heath Holder tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts for the victory as the Bulldogs won in 12 innings. Senior Nick King and junior Stephen Wrenn had three hits apiece in the win. Georgia’s bullpen tossed 11 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts in the UF series. Did You Know? One of the most bizarre Bulldog streaks of the season involves home runs as Georgia has smacked 21 consecutive solo shots. The Bulldogs have hit 30 home runs for the year (26 solo), and the last time a runner was on base for a homer came on March 8 in the 13th game of the season. Freshman catcher Michael Curry delivered a pinch-hit, three-run blast against Charlotte at BB&T Ballpark. GEORGIA HEAD COACH SCOTT STRICKLIN#10 SCOTT STRICKLIN, IKE COUSINS HEAD BASEBALL COACH

3RD YEAR AT UGA Scott Stricklin is in his third season as the Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach at the University of Georgia. Since arriving in Athens, Stricklin has created an atmosphere of excitement around the program, starting with the current student-athletes, extend-ing to former lettermen and to Georgia baseball fans around the state. He has organized numerous lettermen functions to help reunite the Bulldogs and steered the $12 million “Foley Field Revival” project that was completed for the 2015 season. Most recently, Georgia won a 2016 series over No. 2 South Carolina, the higest series win for the Bulldogs since 2001. In his first year with the Bulldogs, he led Georgia back to the SEC Tournament fo the first time since 2012. Georgia captured a series over No. 7 South Carolina, the first over a top 10 team since 2011. Three Bulldogs were drafted and signed contracts. In 2015, Georgia posted its first SEC road sweep since 2009 when it beat UT and then followed that up by claim-ing its first league series at No. 7 USC since 1994. The Bulldogs had seven players selected in the MLB draft, the most since 2011. Stricklin, 44, posted a 350-188 record during a nine-year stint at KSU, winning five Mid-American Conference regular season crowns and five MAC Tournament titles. Known for developing student-athletes on and off the field, 30 KSU players were selected in the MLB draft during his tenure. From 2010-12, KSU registered a perfect 1,000 score in the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) report. KSU was one of only 16 schools in the country to reach this academic accomplishment and the only public institution on the list. Also, the Golden Flashes were honored in Omaha in 2012 for having the highest team Grade Point Average (GPA) of all eight participants at the College World Series (CWS), owning a 3.09 GPA. For the spring semester of 2013, the KSU baseball team registered a 3.06 GPA. Stricklin earned his first head coaching job in July of 2004 when he returned to Kent State following three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Georgia Tech under former KSU head coach Dan-ny Hall. Stricklin directed Kent State to its finest season in school history in 2012 as the Golden Flashes posted a record 47 victories including a 21-game winning streak and their first trip to the CWS. KSU wound up with a final national ranking of No. 5, the highest ranking in team history. Stricklin, a two-time All-Mid-American Conference catcher at KSU, was a 23rd round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 1993. He played five sea-sons of professional baseball and reached the Triple-A level with the Twins. Stricklin graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in mar-keting from Kent State in 1995. He and his wife Cheri have three children: daughters Sydney (13) and Keaton (8), and a son, Cale (11).

The Bulldog relievers combined to toss 11 scoreless inning with 11 Ks. Georgia won the opening game of the series 2-1 in 12 innings. The current scoreless streak by Georgia’s relievers is at 14 innings entering the Tech game Tuesday.

*On April 12, junior LHP Andrew Gist carried a shutout to the 9th at #19 Ga. Tech before allowing a leadoff home run. Before that, Georgia had tossed 15 scoreless innings in the series against Tech. The Bulldogs won 3-1 behind Gist’s career performance.

*On April 1, junior RHP Robert Tyler carried a no-hitter for 8.2 innings against No. 21 Alabama before pinch-hitter Georgie Salem smacked a home run to spoil it. Tyler wound up with a CG, 1-hitter and a 7-1 victory. It was the first 1-hitter by a Bulldog since 1994, the same year of Georgia’s last no-hitter (Brian Powell vs. Eastern Kentucky). Tyler had a perfect game for the first 6.1 IP vs. Bama before issuing a couple of walks.

*Georgia set a school record with a game that took 5:12, falling to #21 Alabama 10-7 in 13 innings on March 31/April 1...that’s right, the game started in March and ended in April.Georgia has played SIX games that have lasted more than four hours this year including TWO that were 9-inning games. Georgia beat #10 Miss. State 11-8 in Starkville on March 26th, and it took 4:52 to play a 9-inning game! *Georgia played three extra inning games out of its first six in 2016, going 2-1. Overall, Georgia is 4-2 in extra innings this year. In all of 2015, Georgia went 2-2 in extra innings. In 2014, Georgia went 2-2-1 in extras. *Senior DH Daniel Nichols provided an RBI-single for a 7-6 walk-off win in 10 innings over Cincinnati on Feb. 27. It was his first career walk-off hit. He is one of four Bulldogs to have a walk-off RBI this year along with Nick King (March 4), Mitchell Webb (March 11) and Michael Curry (March 12).

*In the last two games of the UK series (March 19-20), senior Daniel Nichols hit a solo home run in his first at bat of the day coming in the 2nd inning to tie the game. In the March 20 game, UGA trailed 7-1 in the 4th and then registered five straight 2-out singles to score five runs for its biggest inning of the season. UK went on to win 14-6.

*On March 13 against Lipscomb, freshman OF Logan Moody, started in CF for junior preseason All-American Stephen Wrenn who was ill. He posted a career-day, going 4-for-5 with his first home run. Before that, Moody was 4-for-26 in his career (9 games).

*On Feb. 28, freshman C Michael Curry tied a school record by striking out five times, going 0-5 versus Western Kentucky. He was the first Bulldog to do that since 2009 (Matt Cerione vs. South Carolina). Curry bounced back in his next game, going a career-best 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a 5-3 win over Charleston Southern.

*For the first time in the modern era of Georgia Baseball, a Bulldog catcher batted leadoff in a game. Skyler Weber went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the top spot of the order in a 7-6 (10) road win over Mercer on Feb 24.

*Redshirt freshman RHP Sam Vaughn spent two seasons as a scout team QB for the Bulldog football team. He made the baseball team this year after trying out in February, and his debut came at Mercer on Feb. 24, inheriting a bases-loaded, one out situation with Georgia trailing 4-2 in the third. He threw one pitch and got a double play!

*Freshman RHP Blakely Brown has a save and a win in his first two appearances. He picked up the save in his debut, working 1.2 IP with 3 Ks against Ga. Southern in the season opener. His second outing came at Mercer on Feb. 24, inheriting a 9th inning bases-loaded, one out situation with the game tied. With the infield in, he induced a fielder’s choice force out at home and then a strikeout. In the 10th with a 7-6 lead, he retired the Bears in order including two strikeouts for his first career win.

*For the first time in the modern era of Georgia Baseball, the Bulldogs have elected not to have team captains. Instead, the entire 34-man roster will share the responsibility.

*A gift from UGA swimming letterman and Atlanta philanthropist Tom Cousins has perma-nently endowed the UGA head baseball coaching position. The position now bears the name of Cousins’ father, Ike, a three-sport athlete, including baseball, at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. It is the first endowed head coaching position at UGA and will be known as the Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach.

Current Bulldogs With A Career Walk-Off RBI 2016: Michael Curry (1)*Pinch-hit RBI-single for 1-0 win over Lipscomb on March 12 in Athens. 2016: Mitchell Webb (1)*A bases-loaded BB for a 9-8 win in 11 innings over Lipscomb on March 11 in Athens ends a four hour and 29 minute contest. 2016: Nick King (1)*RBI-single for 4-3 win over Wright State on March 4 in Athens. 2016: Daniel Nichols (1)*RBI-single for 7-6 win in 10 innings over Cincinnati on Feb. 27 in Athens. 2015: Mike Bell (1)*RBI-single for 8-7 win over Longwood on March 7, 2015 in Athens ends 3:58 mara-thon where Georgia left 20 on base and made four errors including 2 by Bell.

Now Leading Off...At Catcher... This season, junior C/OF Skyler Weber has batted in the leadoff spot 22 times, 10 of those as a catcher. He’s the 1st Bulldog catcher to do that in the modern era. In the Majors, there have been at least 18 catchers since 1965 who have bat-ted leadoff in a game: Jason Kendall, John Jaso, Russell Martin, Brad Ausmus, Michael Barrett, Don Slaught, Butch Wynegar, Craig Biggio, Paul Lo Duca, Scott Hemond, Kurt Suzuki, Ivan Rodriguez, Jason Varitek, Charlie Moore, Johnny Oates, John Roseboro, Tim McCarver and Brian Downing. If you’re Tim Kurkjian, here’s where you make reference to Hall of Fame catcher Roger Bresnahan who did it for the New York Giants in the early 1900s, and you have to give an assist to teammate Christy Mathewson who convinced Bresnahan to catch full time in 1905, according to Kurkjian. Furthermore, it was Bresnahan in 1907 who invented shin guards and added padding to the catcher’s mask. Weber is the only SEC catcher this year to bat leadoff. Meanwhile, Rutgers senior R.J. Devish does the same for the Scarlet Knights. Last year, Miss. State catcher Gavin Collins batted leadoff twice in the UT series in May.
