2016 SEASON PREVIEWThe Coast Guard women’s lacrosse

team enters their second season at the varsity level looking to improve on a year that saw them go 4-11 including a season ending win over archrival Merchant Marine, 14-5. The Bears return 11 players from last year’s team and bring in 11 new faces as the program will be searching for their fi rst New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win.

“We return a veteran group this year who understand the expectations for the season,” said second year head coach Ruth Ness. “Throughout the entire preseason and off season they have been hungry and wanting to improve themselves and get back out on the fi eld.”

Starting on the off ensive side of the ball the Bears return sophomore’s Daria McKenna, Cecelia Hosley and Mimi Coburn. The trio combined for 13 goals and two assists and will use the experience from last season to add more fi re power to the Coast Guard off ense. Joining them on attack will be freshman Carter Sanderson who will also be a scoring threat for the Bears.

“I am happy with how the off ensive unit has been able to work well together throughout the preseason,” added coach Ness on the Coast Guard attack as a whole.

Through the midfi eld junior Sierra Webb will be joined by freshman Kali Borden. Webb had three goals, one assist, fi ve ground balls and one caused turnover. Borden will look to make an immediate impact with her speed and athleticism through the middle of the fi eld.

Defensively, the entire back line was on the inaugural team last season led by senior co-captain Kaitlin Dickson. She will look to lead a unit featuring sophomore’s Niki Kirchner-Hope, Kira Dabrowski and AnFei Neal. The entire group played in a combined 57 games last season and will make it diffi cult for any team to get an uncontested shot on the Coast Guard net.

Returning in goal for the Bear’s this season will be sophomore Angel Fay who started every game for Coast Guard last season. Fay was fourth in the conference with 127 saves, a 40.6 save percentage and a 12.32 goals against average. Fay will be a reliable presence in goal for Coast Guard this season.

With strong leadership from co-captains Dickson and senior Isabelle Patnode, the Bears will look to build on their fi rst varsity season in program history and be competitive in the always tough NEWMAC.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFIFTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick is in his fi fth year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas.

In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, he oversaw a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization, the CGA Bear Club, as an annual giving entity to fund athletics “margin of excellence” projects and initiatives.

Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department now conducts an annual women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium), which features prominent national leaders in women’s athletics for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England.

He has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships, established a Faculty Affi liate program, began the annual Celebrate New London football game initiative and was the driving force in the men’s basketball teams appearance in the Armed Forces Classic on ESPNU last season.

Prior to the Academy Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball

programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation during the 1998-99 academic year.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.
