Squam’s Land Trust“Whatever thoughts we have given to the preciousness of this place, we rarely appreciate just how lucky we are to have this moment, to have this opportunity here together. If we dedicate ourselves to each other, and to our common cause, we will achieve something substantial. We will do it with a sense of connection that goes

beyond individual accomplishments. This is our gift: to link arms, to share our work, to have our hearts singing with others.”

This anonymous poem perhaps was not written with our land conservation work in mind, but it immediately resonated with me as expressing the ethos of our Squam Lakes Conservation Society. So many of us, hopefully including you, feel how precious this place is that we call the Squam Lakes Region. We are lucky indeed to have the opportunity to experience what it has to offer, and to share it with our families, our friends and our neighbors. It is a resource -- some would say a sacred place -- that is worthy of our best efforts to secure its future.

Our work is a community effort -- no one individual or small group could possibly do all that is necessary to see that the lands are properly cared for and to help make sure that the next generations get to experience what we have. SLCS is quite intentionally a membership organization. You, the members, hold the ultimate authority over our work, and you set its course. In 2016, literally hundreds of you have dedicated your time, your fi nancial resources and your expertise to our various projects and responsibilities -- monitoring conservation easements, identifying and pulling invasive species, conducting public outreach and education programs on the value of conservation for all, and funding new conservation projects -- the list could go on. In short, you have been the lifeblood of our organization, and you have kept us vibrant as we launch into our work for 2017.

Make no mistake about it, though, we still need your help and your commitment to our common cause. We can celebrate what our organization and its partners have accomplished in 2016, but new opportunities and challenges abound. Thoughtful stewardship of conservation lands for perpetuity is a daunting responsibility. We need you to stay engaged, to stay committed, and, in these turbulent times, to stay hopeful. Your efforts and resources are making a difference to our community and beyond.

As the last line of the opening poem suggests, our task also is a gift -- an opportunity to link arms, to share our work, and to secure for future generations all that is special about Squam. So, let’s appreciate how lucky we are, and let’s dedicate ourselves to each other, and to our common cause. Again this year, we look forward to you joining us!

Land Value (fee-owned) $5,999,413SLCS owns 22 parcels totaling 1,177 acres in the Squam Watershed. This includes the 495-acre Whitten Woods parcel in Ashland temporarily held in 2015, which will be conveyed to the New England Forestry Foundation in 2017.

Active Projects $1,903,906Pooled funds held for ongoing land acquisition projects. The Squam Uplands Initiative is the largest of these projects.

Barnes Legal Defense Fund $231,585Funds reserved for legal defense of conservation easements. This fund pays the annual premium for $500,000 of legal defense expenses per property through the Land Trust Alliance’s Terrafi rma Insurance Program.

Kusumpe Fund $43,872A fund supporting the advancement of conservation in the Squam watershed, and the Kusumpe Pond area in particular.

Frank Webster Land Acquisitions $168,498Pooled gifts in memory of founder Frank Webster. Dedicated for the purchase of land and the related costs of land conservation, such as surveys, appraisals and recording costs.

Stability because this talented group helps keep the “je ne sais quoi” of Squam. You know what I’m talking about. It’s that feeling, that calm we experience when we return to this place. Progress because these intrepid monitors are getting better by the year. Refining skills, venturing out more often, and using technology to have fun and give back to a place they love. We owe these folks a huge debt of gratitude for helping us look after the growing portfolio of SLCS conserved lands. They know full well the promises and commitments we have made to you and the entire community that loves this place. Promises made to last…that’s what it’s all about. Thank you all!
