2019 Annual Report • 3
Looking back on 2019 from this new place in 2020 makes me a bit nostalgic for a lot of things that I was not appreciative of in the moment. So let’s celebrate those things now. Conferences, work travel, community meetings, running into each other at the farmers market, things that create true community. Most of you who have been longtime supporters realize that our organization has grown a lot over the past 25 years, in size, in reach, and in successes. Over these years of dedicated service to and partnership with the community, we have created routine around the difficult work of affordable housing, protecting the environment, and creating access to healthy food. That routine has given us the ability to look more broadly at the work and the context in which we operate. It shouldn’t be scary to say to you that we recognize the inequities that exist which make this work needed. As we look back over the successes of 2019, my hope is that we will weigh them with these inequities in mind, and be galvanized to bring the change that it will take for this work to not be so desperately needed. Speaking of nostalgia, we should take a moment to acknowledge what happened in the final days of 2019, which saw the end of the operation of the West Broad Farmers Market and Garden at the West Broad School. After eight years on that site, we moved off and began again down the street. Much about this move was business as usual as we forged ahead to provide uninterrupted resources to market vendors and visitors alike. But there was so much tied into the school site that it is worth commemorating what it represented -- the efforts of low-income members of the community to build something that they believed would address their most pressing needs and preserve an important piece of the community's history. For many who were alumni of the school, it is hard to see that site continue to sit vacant and blighted in the middle of their neighborhood. For this reason and many others, we will continue to work hard to help the community members realize their vision as we look for other locations to build a neighborhood campus and commercial kitchen to grow small businesses, support youth development, celebrate heritage, and serve the community in a holistic, equitable way.
Gratefully,
Heather Benham, Executive Director

Athens Land Trust believes in preserving and stewarding
natural and productive lands in an equitable way for the
benefit of current and future generations.
Our Young Conservation Stewards completed a restoration project in Beech Haven -- an ecologically and culturally rich greenspace in Athens. With support from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Athens-Clarke County, we hired 19 stewards and crew leaders and led 157 volunteers to restore 28 acres through invasive species removal, including 10 acres of riparian restoration through the planting of 2,400 new understory trees to reduce erosion and enhance wildlife habitat at this future public preserve.
In 2019, we worked closely with landowners to protect more than 840 acres in Mitchell, Morgan, Washington and Wilkes Counties with Conservation Easements, bringing the total acreage of protected lands to 17,836 acres in 36 Georgia counties.
We also strengthened our commitment to farmland preservation by hosting farmer and activist Leah Penniman, author of Farming While Black, to highlight the importance of addressing farming inequities and supporting black farmland protection and access; growing GAFarmlink.org to support over 100 farmland seeker and owner profiles, matching two seekers with suitable land to launch farm operations; and working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Ag Land Easement (ALE) program to recruit landowners to submit 7 projects for farmland preservation.
The Land Trust Accreditation Program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever.

The Affordable Housing develops permanently affordable, energy efficient single-family homes in Athens-Clarke County through the construction of new EarthCraft certified homes and rehabilitation of existing vacant homes. ALT has built 63 homes since 2001 and currently holds 25 lots for future development. ALT also develops and maintains rental housing for extremely low-to-moderate income individuals and families, with 102 affordable units. More than 450 people are currently served through these properties.

In partnership with the Athens-Clarke County Department of Housing and Community Development, we developed and closed on four new EarthCraft certified permanently affordable homes in 2019, helping four new families realize the benefits and increased security afforded by home ownership. In the words of one new homeowner:
"When I started this journey, I wrote 'Day 1' on a calendar on the day that I decided to start really working to buy a house. I marked every single day with my goal in mind... until the day that I closed on my house. I appreciate that Athens Land Trust is committed to giving others the same great opportunities."

Our 2019 Affordable Housing achievements include the fully compliant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rehabilitation of a vacant home for a client. This former three-bedroom house was entirely renovated and converted into a more spacious two- bedroom home. The driveway, porch and all the rooms are wheelchair accessible, as are the appliances and fixtures.

Our Community Agriculture program creates opportunities for underserved community members to share experiences and gain hands-on learning in sustainable agriculture and nutrition. This includes teaching youth about where food comes from, what their local food system looks like, and how food helps build community. The fourth annual Rooting for Community Camp taught children aged 8-12 about community and sustainability through a variety of nature-based experiences, including harvesting produce at the West Broad Garden which was delivered to neighborhood residents and working with the Young Urban Builders to make a bench for a local community garden.
The Young Urban Farmers program continued to provide paid work experience for local high-school students as they learned about sustainable agriculture, cooking and nutrition, and entrepreneurship, including planning and creating agriculture-based products to sell at the West Broad Farmers Market. The YUF gained experience in leadership and service as students also supported the Athens Community Garden Network.

gricultureThe Community Garden Network increases fresh food access for underserved populations including low income families, children, seniors, and immigrant communities. With our CGN partners, we provide support including tools and materials, volunteers, and hands-on education to gardens throughout Athens. Through an Environmental Justice grant from the EPA, we led a local partnership to support the CGN through work days, training for garden stewards, and public education. Our Young Urban Farmers helped with air and water quality testing and rain barrel installation at network gardens including the West Broad Garden. Since 2012, this hub of the CGN has provided fresh food, learning, opportunties for service, and restful greenspace to the West Broad neighborhood.

ion Our work in the West Broad neighborhood
evolved in exciting ways as we responded to community-voiced needs and visions. The Young Urban Builders (YUB) program continued to employ and train youth in the construction trade as they worked with licensed contractors to complete repairs for very-low-income homeowners. The YUB addressed needs for 13 homeowners in 2019 thanks to support from Athens-Clarke County and generous donors from 100+ Women Who Care Athens.

These sustainability projects have been achieved in partnership with resident leaders who formed the West Broad Neighborhood Advisory Board and engaged with the local government to ensure that revitalization solutions align with community-identified needs. In 2019 we continued key partnerships with The Kresge Foundation and the Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation to support this work. The West Broad Rising movement, named and championed
In the first of a two-year grant from the Southeast Sustainability Directors Network Sustainable Communities Fund, we partnered with Athens-Clarke County's Office of Sustainability, Public Utilities Department, Community Forester, and others to help low-income homeowners reduce water and energy usage and decrease the risk of flood and hazardous tree damage. We provided energy audits to 40 homes and performed conservation retrofits on 20 homes with high utility usage by fixing leaks, updating fixtures, and adding insulation. YUB helped complete
plumbing projects and blower door tests to measure potential energy loss. Audits from the Community Forester and New Urban Forestry identified 20 homes where dangerous trees were removed, and the Young Conservation Stewards planted new trees to reduce flood damage risk and energy costs.
